Just based on the initial feedback and quick responses, it’s fair to assume we probably could do away with kickers next season and everyone would be happier.

As for replacing the spot, if we have to, if love to see a 2nd flex or a 3rd WR. Since we moved to half PPR, a 3rd WR could be fun and make them a little more even in value with RB’s. In a 3 WR league guys like Hopkins, Thomas, Evans, etc. tend to knock some of the RB’s out of the first round. It’s fun.

I’m happy for kickers to be taken out.

Removing kickers and adding another flex spot are completely unrelated issues. No need to conjoin them as if we need to "replace" the kicker.

I'm okay with adding another flex spot if the majority wants it. The downside, in my opinion, is that extra spot weakens the waiver/free agent pool by 12 players. Waiver pickups will get scarcer because 12 more flex players will be on rosters. And we wouldn't want to remove a bench spot to counteract it, I don't think, or else it becomes tricky to fill your roster when bye weeks are in full flex. (Although that's something to consider).

But the upside is we often have good players sitting on our bench and we can get them in action. It rewards teams with a depth of good players.

I'm all for an extra flex player in a 10 team league where there is a wealth of players to go around (VIP league take note). In a 12 team league, I'm on the fence about it.

It would definitely make things trickier from a wire perspective.

I'd rank my preference for the extra spot to be:
    - extra bench spot
    - superflex (anyone in the flex - including QBs. There's enough and then strategy really comes into play.)
    - get rid of the spot all together
    - extra flex

To counter the flex taking players out of the pool why not add the additional flex and remove a bench spot?

But you are right, removing the kicker and what to do after are separate issues.

Wouldn't that be a major issue in an already shallow pool if byes kill you?

Yea that's the concern with adding a 2nd flex and removing a bench spot. With only 5 bench spots instead of 6, bye weeks are trickier. This year for instance I had a week where my entire 6-player bench was on bye during the same week. That wouldn't have worked for me with a 5-player bench and I would have had to make a roster change to fill my starting roster. That's probably rare, but it happens.

Food for thought. It wouldn't be the end of the world to have to account for your bye weeks a little more, and it wouldn't be the end of the world to have a shallower free agent pool. These are just things to consider.

With it being 12, that does make it trickier.

I would lightly push for a superflex, haha. I've never done it but it sounds like it could be fun.

Barring a miraculous 23 point showing tonight from the Bills' rookie tight end Dawson Knox, it's looking like me vs BGMaverick in the championship.

I had Njoku in my starting lineup with no injury designation. And then eight minutes before kickoff I saw he was ruled out (coach's decision) and all my morning options were out the window. >.<

Not that it would have made a difference with the point differential, but I'll use it as an excuse all the same lol

Ideally you would have started Andrews on Thursday once he was made active, although you'd be dead and buried right now if you did so, so I guess it was for the best and at least you've still got a prayer with the Bills kid.

Andrews had a solid night with a TD but not enough to make up the gap.

Andrews was playing hobbled and ARI has been among the worst D's against TEs so I was going for the home run over what was likely a safer floor. C'est la vie..

The fill-in had 3 for 29 with two touchdowns.

This will be the first time we've had 3 prize winners in a season. Bandit has been awarded $100 for his regular season championship. And now BGM and I determine who gets $100 and who gets $400. May the best team win.

I'm in the central time zone. With enough notice, days of the week really won't matter to me. If it could be after 7 CST, that would be best. If it's 6, I'll have to try to hustle. If it's 5, as was listed, I'm pretty much out.

We’ll try to figure it out. The tough part is not making it a 1AM start time for the euro division

In regard to draft time, as always, while I would like to have it on the Sunday before opening kick off, the US Labor Day holiday complicates that. A lot of Americans are gone that weekend since monday is a holiday. So the last couple years we have done a 6PM eastern / 11PM UK start on Labor Day itself or one of the following work days. However, BGM has said that's too early for him. By the way BGM - did you realize that Monday I scheduled it for is Labor day? Do you work that day?

Feel free to propose other solutions that work for people.

I will collect payments in August. I'm not trying to collect too early this year in case of Covid stuff happening.

I apologize. I didn't pay attention to the actual date. I just saw it was during the week. If it's during a holiday, it won't be an issue for me.

ok great. so we will proceed for now with a planned draft date of Monday Sept 7 (Labor Day) at 6PM NYC time / 11PM London time. Opening kick off is Thursday Sept 10.

    2020 Rule Changes
    -Kickers removed.
    -2nd flex spot added.

I am happy with these changes, my only thought is with the 2nd flex it might make our bench (6 bench spots + 1 IR spot) a little too deep. I plan to leave it alone but cutting the bench spots to 5 is something I will consider. I still like the IR spot.

The depth in terms of bench or IR might be a legit necessity this season.

Anyway the discussion on the 2nd Flex last season stalled out as we weren't lumping it together with kicker

    I don't think we need a 2nd Flex

I see the point about covid making us need our bench more this year but in general I don't think we have too few. I personally don't like having such a big bench which makes the free agent pool super weak. 6+IR is plenty.

I'm open to opinions on this. The majority wanted kickers gone, so that's a done deal. You're right we didn't discuss the 2nd flex so much and it's a separate issue. I personally feel like I almost always have a startable flex player on my bench and I like those players to be in the lineup. It rewards roster depth. I prefer adding a 2nd flex spot to a 7th bench spot because what are we just hoarding players for the chance we'll use them later? I'd rather us have to start another one of those guys.

I know your play style though Torn. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever but I know you like to keep handcuffs and guys who have no value currently but could emerge later in the season. I respect it as a strategy but I'm not sure it's best for the league to emphasize the bench reserves. It's more fun to have more of our rosters starting, in my opinion.

I think the pool is already pretty thin just based off the fact it's a 12-team league. That's not necessarily an argument to suggest keeping the bench number the same, though. This year is going to potentially be really wild. I think we're going to need to talk it out over the next few weeks as more information is shared. Just optics alone, 1 IR spot doesn't seem like it's going to cut it. Let's say someone just gets legit hurt because it's a physical sport and they're out a few weeks. That's your IR spot there. Then say someone else gets Covid and is out 2-3 weeks and the NFL decides to create short-term IR spots for Covid. So if we only have 1 IR spot, we're just eating a spot. There certainly needs to be more IR spots this season.

We're also going to need an agreed contingency plan in place for establish who "wins" the season if it's cut short.

As for the flex, if we had a second flex, I'd want it to be superflex but I doubt anyone else actually wants that.

I'm open to a 2nd IR spot this year (and this year alone) due to Covid. I don't see an issue with that.

Superflex (which includes QB) is not something I'd consider, unless there's a big push from you guys and explanation of how it makes sense. The problem with that in a 12-team league is there aren't enough QBs in the league for everyone to have 2 plus a backup so unfortunate teams will potentially get caught with a goose egg at the QB spot for certain weeks. I don't see how it's not a potential clusterfuck in that way.

The third QB definitely doesn't make sense in a 12-team league but that's where the trade-off comes with your flex. I actually retract my comment at the end of the previous post: The second flex and SF doesn't really work but only having one flex and option to make it the option for SF is intriguing. That makes it to where you don't necessarily need 24 QBs in play but allows for those to opt for that strategy if they want to pursue it. That's actually the angle I would campaign for.

FWIW: Daniel Jones was 24th in scoring last season. A rookie, who essentially played just 12 games last season. That also means the likes of injury-riddled guys like Stafford/Big Ben didn't crack that top-24 and you've got rookies like Burrow and Tua who are likely to make noise.

    Just food for though.

I am still a firm no on superfex but like I said, if you gain the support of the league I will always reconsider. I am the people's commissioner.

If it comes down to a 2nd (normal) flex or not, what would be your vote?

If SF is out of the equation and it's just focused on the second flex, I'd remove it and add a bench spot.

I'm not interested in adding a 7th bench spot. We can add more IR spots if we need to account for covid.

But it sounds like people arent into the 2nd flex spot and thats fine, I can remove it.

Well you said if there's enough momentum, you're on board for a change lol. Sounds like Torn is interested. Might as well check the rest of the group to see.

I removed the 2nd flex, added 2 new IR spots (3 total). As a reminder, the ESPN IR spot isn't only used for when a player is on real-life IR. They are eligible for fantasy IR if they are ruled out of a game for injury (even a single game) so it should work for covid purposes. I think it'll make sense to re-assess the # of IR spots as we see what happens with baseball/basketball players over the next month, but I set it at 3 for now.

If there is strong support to replace one of those with a 7th bench spot, I would consider it for this year. I prefer to use IR spots.

We still need to figure out contingency plans for if the season gets cancelled or cut short or whatever. I'll post my thoughts on that when I have a chance but feel free to say what you guys think about that to start the discussion.

Let's see how things go in text next 2-3 weeks with the covid but at the moment given the baseball happenings I'm wondering if we should even do cash wagering this year. I mean as long as the season happens then I'm fine with the cash element... even if half the league goes on sick leave at some point, it could make for a fun chaotic fantasy season. The reasoning for not doing cash would be the threat of league cancellation. (And if we did no-cash we could still play the league as a free season).

But if things progress towards a season and we do proceed with buy-ins here are my thoughts:

-I'm fine with people paying as late as possible for us to decide on a go/no-go situation for the league, but I don't want to push it so far that people haven't paid by draft time and I don't want to hound people. So I'd like to decide if we're moving forward with cash by 2 weeks prior to draft, and give people 2 weeks to pay.
-If the season goes to shit, I can refund people their money although I know with conversion rates/fees you international folk will take a small hit. With Americans I don't think anything would be lost in the transactions.
-I'll throw it out there as a suggestion: we could treat it like a baseball game, that the season has to go a certain number of weeks to be official. Like if the league goes for 8 weeks then we consider it an official fantasy season and there are no refunds. If it then gets cancelled prior to the conclusion of our fantasy playoffs, then our backup award system could be something like: 1st place ($300), 2nd place ($200), 3rd place ($100) and it could be based on the final standings.
-We could also shorten the league length although I feel like if we get to 10 weeks then the chances of getting to 16 weeks is probably pretty good.

Makes sense to me, I don't think it's going to be an issue though really.

I think this is a pretty trustworthy bunch in terms of people paying so I don't envision any issues there.

There is no way the season won't happen. Too much money involved in it. The main question will be if it will take place in front of crowds or not and I guess if the dates remain the same.

If it then gets cancelled prior to the conclusion of our fantasy playoffs, then our backup award system could be something like: 1st place ($300), 2nd place ($200), 3rd place ($100) and it could be based on the final standings.
This sounds good if it gets to this. But I think they’ll be a full season. So yes everyone just pays normal with the deadline in place.

A couple ideas I've heard that I can add to the suggestion pool in terms of working/navigating through the season with Covid:

    - Continue to negotiate on the amount of IR spots.
    - Based on our starting lineup construction, changing it to 1QB, 1RB, 1WR, 1TE, and 3 flexes (not QB).
    - Daily waivers rather that first come, first serve after the initial waiver period.
    - Consider the idea of weekly prizes if it does feel like this is going to be an abbreviated season.
    - Establish prior to the season when the checkpoint of the season comes to validate a "full" season to validate the funds being available as winnings for those in contentions.

I'm all about building contingencies and planning for the worst to have them ready.

    Appreciate the input.

    - Continue to negotiate on the amount of IR spots.
Yes I'm open to adding however many we want. And while I'm against a 7th bench spot as a permanent change, I don't rule it out as a temporary add this year.

    - Based on our starting lineup construction, changing it to 1QB, 1RB, 1WR, 1TE, and 3 flexes (not QB).
I don't see this as necessary so I would vote no but I'm open to it. It changes roster construction too much IMO.

    - Daily waivers rather that first come, first serve after the initial waiver period.
I'm not opposed. I played around with the ESPN settings and I'm not entirely sure how it would work. I'll look at it again and report back.

    - Consider the idea of weekly prizes if it does feel like this is going to be an abbreviated season.
Not opposed but it would seem complicated to figure out when weekly prizes start, how much they are for, etc.

    - Establish prior to the season when the checkpoint of the season comes to validate a "full" season to validate the funds being available as winnings for those in contentions.
Agreed, I had suggested this previously and threw out 8 weeks as a potential "full season" threshold.

Yeah, certainly not a case where I'm married to any of the things I mentioned. Just figured it would be good food for thought as we start ramping up.

I think the IR spot/bench number, waiver setup, and checkpoint are the bigger ones. I think the 7th bench spot is a worthwhile option for this season. I think it's going to be wild, and early-morning inactives are going to be a must watch. The daily waiver thing helps protect those who aren't glued to the net every minute of every day.

Once those are figured out/hashed out, and figure out the checkpoint...we should be good.

Although I don’t think the season will get cancelled once it’s started, the checkpoint should be half way through the number of games we play...no?

    Daily waivers make sense

Extra bench spot for this year is gonna be key, cos the extra IR spot isn't gonna solve all the problems - easiest example is if we have postponements like MLB has had, but it's gonna be A LOT less shit if we are able to build depth and not constantly have to rely on getting the next man up from waivers.

Seems like it's fair to suggest we come to a vote on daily waivers, week 8 finishing as the cutoff for qualifying as a "full" season. Then hashing out the bench/IR situation.

I don’t really understand how daily waivers work. If you need to add someone right before kickoff, can you? Or are they on waivers? Someone explain this to me.

Let's say (because I don't remember) Wednesday morning is when waivers clear. Everyone makes their claim before Wednesday and the results are shown and the people who weren't claimed then go from waivers to free agents, able to be picked up immediately. Instead of those people now listed as free agents being able to be picked up again, they immediately stay in a pool of waivers, but the waivers clear each day until Sunday when the games lock.

This is mainly done to level the playing field and protect those who aren't glued to their phone and see ESPN tweet something about player X having Covid and the first person reading it plucking a free agent.

I still don't quite get it but for reference here is what ESPN lets you do. The default is that Tuesday is the only day of the week not checked off. Based on this, let me know what you guys think the settings should be set to in your proposal.

I guess let me know what you're not sure about and I can try to help.
