Is this anything more than Twitter rumours yet? All the Telegraph article seems to be based on is that he dodged a question and they've not been able to get any comment from anyone.

I'd assumed that, plus the timing fits well, even the announcement today that he is going gives them time to out negotiate Chelsea, can't see Jose turning it down either.

Can you imagine the uproar if it did go to Moyes though? He's done a good enough job with Everton, but he's surely nowhere near ready to take on Man U.

This is huge news and I think good news for a more competitive Premier League.

Fergie was the best manager ever and whoever takes over just cannot match his achivements.

Would Jose take over from such a legacy, surely it can only be downhill from here?

Yeah I do feel a bit sick already. It's going to be a tense few weeks.

Respect to Ferguson. Wondered if this would ever happen. Will be absolutely bizarre to see anyone other than him managing United. He's been the only constant face in the Premier League for my entire life.

On one hand I can see why United wouldn't be interested in a big controversial figure like Mourinho - on the other, it's hard to think of anyone else who might have an actual chance of escaping Ferguson's shadow.

Jurgan Klopp at 25-1 is great odds.

I cant see it being Moyes. If Ferguson has his say then he probably stands a chance but would Man Utd really take a manager who hasnt beat one of the (traditional) big four away in his career?

Id be happy for him to go though, Mourinho can then manage us instead...

I do find it hard to believe that they wouldn't be pretty certain who is taking over - but do United have to announce the new manager as soon as it's a done deal if they're on the stock exchange? I don't know.

Can't see it being Mourinho, he's a massive fucking crybaby. As soon as things ain't going his way, he'll fuck off. Seeing as they've had a manager for the best part of 30 years, I'm sure one of the key things they're looking for is stability.

They'll want stability and a vision so I think Moyes is the boy. Mourinho would only stay for a few years and then do one. Moyes has everton playing lovely football with limited resources. He has an eye for a transfer too. He'd be grand.

Everyone keeps saying this, but I don't think it necessarily holds water for two reasons:

    1) All the jobs he's had previously have been short-term for a reason. He outgrew Porto having done everything he could (league title, Europa League, Champions League), then moved to Chelsea where short-termism is the order of the day and he was forced, then went to Inter where it was a bit of both - he won everything and it's a club (well, the entire country) where managers never stay long. Then he went to Madrid, where again the setup is always about short-term success and managers never last long. He's never been at a club where longevity is the norm.

    2) Having made his way around the big European leagues winning everything in as short a time as possible, as he said he would, I think his next goal could be to create a legacy at a club. It's no secret that he holds Ferguson and United above any other manager and club, and I reckon the idea of taking over from Ferguson would be something he would love.

It might not work out that way in any case, and it seems like Moyes is nailed on to get it now, but I don't see Mourinho's history of instability () as necessarily meaning he would do the same at United. Personally I think it's a great fit, he's the only manager in world football who wouldn't be cowed by the idea of replacing Fergie, with the possible exception of Guardiola who, presumably, was never in the running for the job, seeing as this must have been in the pipeline since before the Bayern job became available (although this assumes he would have preferred United to Bayern, which isn't automatically true).

Mourinho wasn't a short-term appointment for Chelsea and that's been shown by the fact that the team that he put together is still largely there seven years later. He happened to end up falling out with the owner but had he not have done he may well have still been there.

All correct. The only question is about his winning mentality. He has basically shit himself every time we have looked at pushing on. Done a great job to get us into that position though obviously.

Is there anyone at the club now who has maybe been groomed behind the scenes a la Queiroz a few years back? It's not outside the realms of possibility that Rene Meulensteen or, at a pinch, Brian McClair might be given the reins as a transition between the Fergie era and whatever happens in the future.

EDIT: Reserve team manager Warren Joyce is third favourite. 40/1 odds though.

David Gill has talked about loyalty there, which makes Moyes a likely candidate, but then talks about league and European experience. Moyes has basically zero European experience. Tactically there are questions over Moyes too. His record against Liverpool feels like a poor indicator for how he manages pressure games. It has to be Mourinho really and Mourinho's chat after the CL games earlier this year, and before, suggest he desperately wants the job.

Ferguson has been United's manager literally my entire life. Now sure I wasn't watching for all of that time but it is going to be very strange seeing someone else on the bench. With his hip I suppose now was the right time.

This is huge news. Very exciting for the premier league.

I have no idea who they'll go for but i love how certain people are on both Moyes and Mourinho.

I thinkwe could still be surprised.

I dont think it quite works like that. Shall we give them out ground for their reserves to play on too?

They are both tied to long term contracts so as long as we were to get compensated well for them I wouldnt be too bothered really. Would be more bothered about Baines though.

Luke Garbutt will be the next Paolo Maldini.

Bryan Oviedo will be gutted like.

Im getting annoyed at the thought of Moyes managing us for the final two games now. Assuming he is announced as their manager tomorrow he shouldnt be anywhere near us. Not in a funny way either, hes done a great job and ill wish him well but Everton will look like his fat ex begging for a pity shag before hes fucks off to his slutty new stunner. We are better than that, move on straight away.

I would love Laudrup but cant see him leaving, Maybe we could lure Frank De Boer. Uwe Rosler as a random one.

I want someone exciting and a bit leftfield. Dont fancy Martinez at all. He plays that tiki taka nonsense.

    Fuck it, Slaven Bilic.

I really dont know. Im oddly excited by it all though. Moyes was steady for us but I fancy a bit of summer madness now.

Whoever takes over would want to win at least the league and the FA Cup, plus a CL semi final berth if they want to avoid the "this was a huge mistake" press.

What I don't understand MMH is how you have said over a thousand times that Moves is clueless and has no Plan B and should be sacked yadayada. Why now is this not a laughable appointment from your perspective.

I havnt said he is clueless, I have said he is flawed which he is.

Not quite sure what you mean though as I have questioned the appointment in this very thread saying he doesnt have a winning mentality?

I simply would have thought that what you have said on here, for a number of years, would have led to a much more shocked reaction given what you know, and given the ridiculous but understandable gravitas of the role. I know it has been rumoured in the past, but still.

Thats just my opinion though really. Everyone else seems to love him. Maybe ill be proved wrong. Im not really sure how hes going to deal with big name players either. I would sell RVP now if I was United and get lots of money for him whilst they can. He destroys strikers.

He is great and pointing and issuing rallying cries.

He will probably end up on Moyes backroom staff though.

I suppose he has infinitely more experience than Pep Guardiola had when Barca appointed him and it's more about a certain approach than past success as such. He does seem to have an eye for an interesting signing too.

Mourinho would have been golden though. I suppose there was the chance Mourinho would have publically turned them down just to be a bastard.

Going to be weird seeing someone else managing Utd, I have literally never known anyone but Fergie in charge, greatest manager of the modern age and a natural born winner, the game wont be the same,im sure he will still be involved for years to come mind. Usually a manager leaving means a overhaul of the backroom staff, but a lot of the staff at Man Utd are as much a part of the club as Fergie himself, wonder if Moyes will be taking Steve Round with him, or whether Round might get a crack at the top job at Goodison.

Yeah, thats a massive massive gamble to go anywhere near Lennon. Maybe outside of the goldfish bowl that is Glasgow he will calm down a bit, but really he's not a great manager. He's a good motivator and good at creating a 'them vs. us' mentality, but tactically he's far from polished. The real driving force behind our success has been our coaching staff and work in the transfer market over the past three or four years, and I think with that, we will maintain our standard. Got a sneaking suspicion Lennon will go and we will end up with MON again.

Think Everton would be better off with McCall or Butcher if they are looking for someone from the SPL. I completely agreed with SLARE Lennon needs a bit longer before he's tactically ready for the EPL. He can't really change a game if things are going to shit.

Considering he is still learning as a manager he should probably stick around until he becomes more tactically astute as he can still learn a ton in Europe and the SPL and create an even more impressive cv than he already is has.

Nah, we wont be offering anything until the season has ended I would assume. It would be wrong to announce someone elses manager as our next manager whilst the season is still ongoing...
