I forgot about that. That was awesome, although, that was the early days, and before quick topic boards, so some people figured out some tricks that were unethical, but not necessarily against the rules to figure out scum. Not sure if he was one of these or not. It was still cool to watch though!

It wasn't PM hacking that someone told me they were doing, and it was one of the games I ran, and they told me how they were able to figure out who was mafia, although it didn't work for them entirely that game, but their logic was pretty good. Now granted, they didn't tell me until after the game, so I couldn't really do anything about it.
They basically just monitored where people were on the forums. They assumed that mafia would be spending a lot of time on Private Messages communicating, so they just pegged everyone who was on PM a lot as Mafia. However, now using Quicktopics or even the fact that there are multiple games going on at the same time, it's almost impossible to pull that off now.

My next game will officially be The Ultimate Showdown. I've started fleshing things out with, including character list and ideas for roles. It's going to be real wacky. Wouldn't mind getting it taken care of before I go back to school, because after that I'll begin my busy season of school and haunted house.

We need to solve the pointless 'personal' lynch issue although I struggle to see how. what really pisses me off is that people don't learn, we have some clever people that play like 10 year olds at times.

While I think it may not be best to discuss this given current events it's important to remember that under normal circumstances a personal grudge or two can't lynch someone it takes a majority of players so if you want it to stop it's as simple as telling people lynching town to get rid of someone who annoys you just ain't worth it.
I think I'll get mine going within a few weeks here.

Also I'm in Portugal at the minute but when I'm back I may run GoT 0.2... I think it's 11 or 12 players. Need to have a proper fresh look when I'm back.

I think plenty of us can disguise our play style and typing habits if we actually try. Besides your average Mafia game doesn't really go on long enough for people to pick out all your odd ticks so I wouldn't worry much about that.
I think the little rivalries for the most part don't get too much in the way of common sense.
And much of the time it's done more for the reactions of other players than any spite towards the player getting the vote.
Let's use Doc as an example here. In a series of games before he beautifully used it to gut the mafia, scum would try to keep him alive. Pushing on him, you'd see scum come in to defend him and try to turn it on the lyncher. This would then let you see groups of players form that are pushing the same thing. You see the same pattern for on some other issue and then you get to see me get myself lynched while going nuts screaming that someone is scum.
I think it would be interesting to play a 'blind' mafia by all playing under different names, impossible to do though.
Unless I were to mod it and let each of you register a sock for the game...

While I disagree with Atty and Miotch on the idea that the information gleaned from voting patterns on D1 is reliable or something people can actually read consistently it's true, scum generally refuse to kill me, even when I'm apparently the cop. But they tend to swoop down for the lynch cus I'm basically a free kill. I don't take that personally, that said it's still one or two players (Cewsh and Miotch both have a hard time seeing D3 I've noticed.) I still don't find it to be a terrible issue.
As for socks is it really that hard to open an account here? It's been a while since signed up but doesn't everybody have at least two emails one that's there for all the sites that are gonna spam you to death and you never want to deal with them?

So, had a bit of discussion with (primarily) Timesplitter (as the next game mod), Mr N (as the OG mod) and Miotch as our resident forum mod and as you can see, Mafia Sock accounts are a go.
TS isn't going to use them for JL2 due to some expected teething problems so in a few weeks time, I will run a mid-sized game with anonymous accounts and we will see how it changes the game dynamics. Hopefully no more game reactions just because of how someone did something in the past.

We've made 30 of them with an extra 10 email addresses in case we need more than that.
When you get your role PM, it will include a sock account and password.

That's yet to be determined. Ideally, we should be able to run a 25-30 player game and use the remaining accounts to run a mini... though we might re-purpose dead players from bigger games after they expire.
There obviously have to be some ground rules when using the accounts, but some initial ones...
1) No posting on sock accounts OUTSIDE mafia game thread.
2) No claiming to be yourself (i.e. MafiaSock1: "I am Grimario")
3) ???

Like visitors cannot see the Asylum without signing up, is there no way to "mod" an account so they can only see the Board Games forum? Or at the least only able to post in the BG forum.
A couple other rules, and some clarity on what happens if you break them.
- No one is going to be allowed to change anything about the accounts either. Don't fuck with the status, avatar, signature, etc. We may use some of these as identifiers, or we may not. This is subject to change, but for now as we are getting this started please adhere.
- Even more important than the above is DO NOT CHANGE THE PASSWORD OR THE EMAIL ADDRESS THE ACCOUNT IS LINKED TO. If you do that it can easily ruin this whole experiment for everyone. We lose control of the accounts, and it becomes an administrative nightmare for the admins.
- If you break the rules, especially by using the sock outside of the game you're playing in, I (or another mod) will do an IP search and you will be looking at a LENGTHY ban. I'm thinking minimum of a month, and it may effect whether or not you're allowed to play in any mafia games in the future.

You wouldn't even need to do that... each person modding a game should have a list of WHO the sock was given to so it should be as simple as going "Miotch was playing as MafiaSock11, thought he would be a douche and go spam the W-forums, please ban his actual account"
Correct, though the IP check is super easy and probably quicker than waiting for the game mod to confirm.
That would require changing the passwords each time. Otherwise we're all gonna know the password to an account once we've had it. I don't think we need to worry about that but so much but still.

I think the sock idea is cool and I'm definitely down to give it a shot but I'll probably still be more interested in the normal games going forward. It'll be a hassle to log in and out and people are bound to post outside the BG forum accidentally.
Accidental postings are one thing, but I'm just planning on using separate browsers. Chrome for anon games, Firefox for my normal postings.
This is all just a test though. We'll see how it works.
I don't spend a lot of time on Rajah outside the game sso it'll be less of an issue for me. I'll have to take great care that Mafia Sock 19 never signs up for another mafia game though.

For anyone wondering, I took a list of Crayola colours, got rid of all the ones longer than 8 characters then stuck took 30 of them
And one thing I will need to learn when posting as a sock is to spell color incorrectly.

Side note: I've had 2 strange mafia gimmick ideas. One involves the game ending at an exact date and another based on stats/rolls.. essentially DandD Mafia.
No idea how second one would work in practice.
Consider it a D40 die. One player, whether he knows it or not, is the die. Each page has 40 posts (if you're doing it right) so the last post he posts on the page before night or whatever is the roll for that night.
That is actually a very similar concept to a branch oh my "time limited" one that I dismissed. I wont say more, in case I want to use it in the future
