Had a dream last night that Crown Jewel went absolutely off the rails. Dreamed I came home from work and it was all over the news sites that a bunch of wrestlers no-showed, a bunch walked out at the show, and then Lesnar/Lashley somehow became the main event for the title and Lesnar decided to go full-on shoot fight with Lashley and won.

I once had a dream I was told by Vince McMahon that I'd be wrestling Yokozuna. I was absolutely terrified. Not so much fighting Yokozuna, but going out in front of people Felt so life like.

Remember how good Lashley v. Goldberg was at Crown Jewel? I just remembered that might be the best Goldberg match I'd seen since Starrcade 1998.

We all know Braun vs. Goldberg was the best Goldberg match of all time.

I was shouting at the TV at the time, "Fuck him up Braun!" waving my hands int he air. Those type of things.

I'm a big fan of these specialty ppv shows like Crown Jewel, Super Showdown in Australia. 30 years ago these would be like those Coliseum Home Videos with a bunch of matches thrown together, maybe 1 or 2 were storyline related.

The Saudi shows started off pretty mediocre but the past couple have been really good.

There is a movie in production about the Von Erich family. Jeremy Allen White plays Kerry and Zac Efron plays Kevin. Bruiser Brody is also being portrayed, so maybe they'll dive into how he supposedly hid the drugs that David Von Erich OD'd on in Japan? And I just learned that Kerry only had one foot. Never knew that.

It's crazy how the Von Erichs had so much tragedy in their family. Three sons committing suicide and five total dying? Terrible.

I only really knew Kerry, but as the Texas Torndao. He was one of my favorites during 1990-1991. Loved his theme too. Wild that he wrestled with a prosthetic foot.

I doubt you'll get that level of detail in this movie with Brody. No way they can cram the Von Erich's lives in a 2 hour movie. I'm not going to hold this over the casting director too much but these dudes were big men, Lip and Zack Efron not so much. Harris Dickinson, he's 6'2" and he's playing David who was 6'7" So again, it's a little detail that you probably won't notice on screen.

Kind of the reverse Wolverine. Some fans were hot that Hugh Jackman wasn't 5'3" like Wolverine is but did it matter? Naw. This should be a good movie I'm just very very curious how it will be received by not just the mainstream but the fans. Again, trying to cram this family's life story in a 2 hour movie seems like a tall task BUT maybe they're only focusing on a certain era like the early 80's when most of them were huge stars and alive.

And the fact he did it for like 10 years.

This is a good point that I didn't really think of. Lip is like maybe 5'7" if he's lucky. He can get ripped up, that's for sure, but you can't add height.

My hope is that everyone else will be smaller than the real height of these guys so it'll balance. Like I said about Harris, he'll look about 6'7 next to these 2 shrimps lol.

I know this clip is a few years old but only just got made aware of it. Didn’t know RVD was so good at impressions and just saw his one of HBK. It’s so spot-on!

Not generally but coupled with the HBK voice it’s still a pretty good impression.

I mean judging from the video, HBK didn’t have much love for RVD either.

If you listen to any podcasts, check this one out. Hilarious and Jason Sensation is on quite a bit. He does so many that are uncanny.

Where does Rick Boogs fit in with the current landscape? He's probably a month or two away from coming back. I really liked his pairing with Shinsuke.

came across this video series on youtube that highlights the entire triple h/batista story

i watched it all up to the famous THUMBS DOWN when batista finally powerbombs triple h through the table, and man it's so good. just one of the best long-term storylines in wrestling history, perfectly executed and they really choose the right guy in batista.

Would you lot be ok with Gunther holding the IC title for another 211 days, to break the HTM's record? I know we were all hoping that Santino was going to break the record a few years ago, with his Honk-a-meter stuff, but Gunther is a lot more credible than Santino.

I'm surprised no one has broken that records, after 35 years! Let's do it Gunther!

I would be fine with it. Gunther is very good and is giving the IC title a boost right now.

Yes. I think they could've pulled it off with Orton 20 years ago. We've had a couple long reigns since, I think Shelton is a former 8-9 month champ but that was really where we started to see the WWE not really do much with the IC title. I think because of that Gunther would have an easier time holding it another 4-5 months. Make the US title the 1-2 month reign title they pass around the midcard and when Summerslam hits, have someone on the come up that's done well take it off Gunther. Imagine if Bronn Breakker catches fire on the main roster, he would be a great person to give the rub to.

I mean, they had HTM hold the title for a year and then lose it in 20 seconds to Warrior.

I love Honky Tonk Man. Until he's dethroned, I will always consider him in the discussion of the greatest InterContinental Champion of all time. I was never quite clear how long Pat Patterson held the title that he won in some vague tournament in parts unknown, and god only knows when.

But I wouldn't have a problem with GUNTHER being the one to dethrone him, as long as he keeps defeating all comers. If he does, I would hope they'd give Honky a payday, and invite him to congratulate GUNTHER.

Andrade was suspended and also had surgery of some sort so was going to be out a while either way. No idea what his status is at this point.

I think Miro is just waiting on creative to come up with something.

Booker of the Year can't even come up with something for Miro. I thought these guys and gals had creative freedom and could whatever they wanted? There's something weird going on with Miro. Another victim of Tony hiring every Tom, Dick, Jane, and Harry that came from the WWE during the mass releases. And has done zero of worth. All that video game and Jesus bullshit. But it's also Miro....Dude isn't anything special.

I think Adrade could be a good, propoer main event heel if he could find his way back to WWE. I'd even be down for an Andrade/Charlotte power couple. Andrade/Charlotte vs. Cody/Brandi feud, yes I'd like that.

Rusev is a bit boring for me. Don't mind if he returns to WWE but would be ok too if he didn't.

If all the talent and people hate Vince McMahon walking around doing shit, they should all band together and just not show up to work. What's he gonna do, fire everyone? That's a lot of "you're fired" being said and quite frankly I don't think his voice is up to that many at this point.

I suppose he'd just sue everyone, and Vince doesn't lose in court.

Yeah some of them could be granted their release but I imagine most wouldn't due to the contracts. Way back in 1997 when Montreal happened two people walked out: Rick Rude, who was on a pay per appearance deal, and Mick Foley. One of them went to WCW Nitro, the other went back to Raw lol.

Rick Rude. What a man. In another thread they were discussing the best moustache in wrestling and I can't believe Rick Rude wasn't mentioned. Easily above Big Bully Busick and that dork in AEW.

Rick was the man. Remember when he left for WCW after Montreal? He was the only guy with the stones to do so. . . though he wasnt locked into a contract.

There's a lot of disrespect for big Bully Busick in this thread.

    Likely due to jealousy.

    Mick Foley.

That had nothing to do with stones when you're able to come and go as you please and are retired, expendable, whereas you had wrestlers who were not making the kind of money you do today who would no doubt lose in court.

Rude was the fucking man though. It did take stones to do that but I wonder just how different his reaction would've been if he were obligated to 2-3 years. WWE would've granted his release he was a non-factor in the majors unfortunately at this time. The way he was used at least.

I'd chop off my hair for the chance to have rick rude abs. Rick rude abs in 1990, not today.

Rude probably still has better abs 25 years later.

It's said that if the night before Summerslam falls on a full moon, you can see the ghost of Rick Rude's abs flying over the arena. The visual portion of this spectral phenomenon is accompanied by the shrieks of those who died.....while lusting after Rick Rude's abs.

Warrior vs. Rude cage match from SummerSlam 1990 was the first ever wrestling main event match I watched. I mean unless you count the 1990 Rumble as a main event match. Still, it's the first one on one main event match. Loved it.

I remember there was this crazy stretch of ppvs my mom let us get. It started with Survivor Series 1989 and ended with Mania 7 (1991) I think that's why those shows are so meaningful to me as a wrestling fan. Summerslam 1990 was such a great card. Rude/Warrior, Hogan/Earthquake, Hart Foundation/Demolition 2-3 Falls, Mr Perfect v. Texas Tornado, Jake the Snake v. Bad News with the snakes v. sewer rats gimmick behind it.

If you get a chance go check out the match times. Most of the matches were under 6 minutes. Warrior v. Rude was only 10 minutes lol. I imagine there were probably some die hard wrasslin fans that were pissed they only got to see about 45 minutes of wrestling lol.

Vince and Piper on commentary. Woof. This is right after Ventura left.

    Piper and Monsoon were good.

Monsoon: "He hit him with a tombstone!"

    Piper "What's it called?"

    Monsoon "I think it's called a tombstone!"

Like he would know, the Undertaker was a mystery partner!

I could have handled Monsoon and Piper. Or even Vince and Jesse. But neither on that PPV hurt it. Also the opener killed the momentum too. That was the one where Shawn was legit hurt. He limps out to the ring and Power and Glory jump him in the isle and beat him down. He never enters the match so its just like 8 min of Marty selling and then one of the greatest finishers of all time. It was an interesting decision to go that route. I know it was an advertised match and all but I thought maybe they could have fed someone else to Power and Glory or done the whole Marty has to find a sub thing for the night.

That time period though. 90 - 92, maybe even 93, just had so much memorable material for me. I can go back and watch any PPV from that era and enjoy it. Can't say much for 94- present lol.

    Pre 90 I didn't watch.

That's fair. This is right in my wheelhouse too but I just remember how disappointing the commentary is on this one. Piper talks non stop.

The opener killed the momentum? That's a first. I actually liked that match more when I got older as I understood the psychology behind it. At the time it made me hate Power and Glory but I think the match was good for the 3-4 minutes it lasted lol.

Piper was tough at the booth. He worked better on the home videos or when it was him, Heenan, and Vince/Gorilla. Two babyface commentators, hard to get over in any era when you think about how even JR and King seemed to get a little stale after King turned face.

One thing I hated in 1990 was the Survivor Series man event. I would have liked to see either Hogan or Warrior getting eliminated. Like Tito you knew was going out. But why not have like Tito take out Warlord, only to be pinned by DiBiase, and then have Rick Martel get counted out like he did, and then have DiBiase and Hogan get counted out, and then have Warrior beat Power and Glory.

I know people complain that they have only done the grand finale match once but it really puts a strain on booking. I think it was fun to see Hogan and Warrior together there but the reality is Hogan wasnt going to get eliminated due to his ego and Warrior was the Champion they didnt want him to go out.

They really should have evened it out in that grand finale. I would've had Jake be the sole survivor of his team, had Earthquake and maybe Dino Bravo be their survors.

So it would have been Jake, Tito, and Warrior vs. DiBiase, Earthquake and Dino Bravo. Have it come down to Warrior vs. Earthquake, Quake dominates and then Warrior Warrior's up and slams Earthquake and the splash.

Oh so Warrior didn't have an ego? Hogan wasn't the most popular wrestler in the world in 1990?

But yes, it was Hogan's ego.....That's the reality because when you were there? At like 5 years old witnessing this egotistical Hulk Hogan do this thing. It's not like Hogan didn't draw or wasn't the most popular wrestler by a country mile on Earth, it was that damn ego!!

I also disagree the booking put a strain on anything. This was a time where we didn't have a bunch smark fans that based everything off never was talent and Dave Meltzer talking about Hulk Hogan. It was great, I wish they did it more often to be honest as they're always trying to bring something different to Survivor Series. It's always been the bastard of the big 4 to the point they almost cancelled it after the one they built around Hornswoggle joining DX.

It was a time where fans actually enjoyed real babyfaces doing babyface things. You had to stack the deck. You had the top 3 babyfaces imo with Hogan/Warrior as the top main event guys and Tito as the #1 midcard babyface. I agree Jake should've been on the team but even then I was happy with who we had.

The thing is, by this time the writing was on the wall with Warrior. He was CLEARLY the #2 babyface. Fans weren't ready to let go of Hulk. Warrior wasn't doing the business they wanted and we all know why-dude was 99% look. Plus he was a pain in the ass to deal with, worse than Hogan. Hogan wasn't going to do the job when they were going to put the belt back on him 4 months later.

Also a very different time in terms of how they booked tv and ppv. They were still booking major storyline progression, title changes, on house shows. Diesel won it on a house show in 6 seconds. Imagine that happening today. Fans would lose their fucking minds despite the match probably winding up on Youtube that night lol.

    1. Its not that Warrior did not have an ego. He was the world champion so they were not going to job him.

Or how about the fact that he wore tights that something like "The Only Warrior" because he was teamed up with LOD (Road Warriors) and Kerry Von Erich (Modern Day Warrior). But Hogan had the ego.

And they weren't going to have Hogan, who was going to reclaim the title at Mania 7, lose that match either. Tito was expendable. Hogan wasn't.

Exactly. So booking either of them to lose in their own matches or in the Grand Finale wasn't an option.

Ok, so what's the problem? That Hogan won a match and you can't ride that "Hogan's ego" narrative?

You're watching 1990 WWF with the wrong lens. They weren't the babyface chasing the heel promotion until Montreal and even then one could argue they didn't go back to dominant babyface until Cena in 2005.

So yeah, a team full of heels weren't going to beat 3 of the most over babyfaces including the top babyface. Honestly I would've let this shit go if you didn't have that "Hogan's ego" comment. What does that even mean? You think Hogan held up Vince and said if you have me lose I'm not going to save this company at Mania?

Jesus Christ you are annoying. I never said I wanted it rebooked. Donald did and I explained reasons why it would be difficult. All I have done is agree with you and you still try to argue.

Ive tried but I just can't do it anymore. I am going to block so if you reply to my stuff in the future I just don't have to deal with it.

    @Donald

Rick Martel had to be in the match because Jake gets the payoff at Mania 7 in the blindfold match. I just wouldn't have made it a sweep as it made the Visionaries look like jabronis. What a team though, Model, Warlord, and Power & Glory. Oof.

Considering the caliber of the people involved, Martel/Jake was awful, awful, awful, awful and….oh yeah did I mention it was awful.

The gimmick certainly handicapped them though. A regular match would have been so much better.

I quite enjoyed it, and it was memorable, as we are talking about it 32/33 years later. There's a lot of shit since then we aren't talking about!

The audience joining in trying to tell Jake where Martel was I guess was fun but the match quality itself IMO was awful. I don’t think that was down to them, like I say they were limited.

For a feud that went on so long, would’ve been better if they could’ve worked a proper match.

That match was great. The psychology was off the charts.

Match quality took a backseat in the WWF in favor of storytelling. You also have to remember this was during the days of 4 ppvs a year and just as much progression at house shows-if not more-than you saw on Prime Time or whatever show they had which was basically like SNL. The feud wasn't even that long. It basically ran from Survivor Series to Mania. At that time, that was a pretty short feud. But a lot of house shows were Rick v. Jake because again, that was the era. They weren't putting Jake v. Rick Martel with a Mania match in mind on free tv for Monsoon and Piper to joke about.

I dug the concept and it worked for the time. It probably wouldn't work as well today because too many are focused on moves and high spots. But as Knee said, the psychology was off the charts and you had 2 of the best in the business in an incredible feud. I loved it. But on the flipside I can see why others didn't.

I didn't watch a ton of ECW and every time I went back to do so I never really got into it. Sat tonight to go through a couple recs and I have come to the conclusion that it is because Joey Styles is the shittiest announcer of all time. His stupid voice inflection, the random insecure shots at other promotions, the total disinterest in trying to sell the psychology or a story of a match - he's not an announcer, he's reading a goddamn move log while being a prick and a dweeb in between. Fuck that guy.

Of course, I'm sure Joey Styles is the sort of dork who would be proud to be mocked by someone whose username is a reference to Hacksaw Jim Duggan, but that's because he's a mark who doesn't understand the point of wrestling.

There have certainly been worse announcers and don’t think he was horrible but certainly overrated. He beat up JBL though lol.

His “Oh my gawwwwd” felt was forced, fake and definitely didn’t feel natural like JR.

Do you recall when the Shield debuted, that everyone though Dean Ambrose was going to be the star? Seth Rollins was just going to be a work horse, and Roman Reigns wouldn't succeed as a top level talent? Boy I'm glad we were wrong.

Correct on Seth being then workhorse. However I personally always thought Ambrose was too restricted and that Reigns was going to be the star. When he eliminated nearly an entire Survivor Series team by himself that was the moment fans were getting behind him as a face. Problem was they rushed and made it too obvious he was going to be the golden boy so drew negative reactions. They’ve corrected since by capitalising on it but I believe Reigns could’ve gotten more over as a super popular face too if they slowed it down.

Though also crowds are smarter these days too so would’ve been difficult. Feel very few unless you’re the likes of a Hogan, Austin or Rock it is much harder to get over as a successful top dog babyface without fans getting tired.

Does anyone still have DVDs/Blu rays?

With wrestling, I do. Reason being, I don't have the Network all year round etc, and also, you never know what content the Network may remove at any point.

Recently came across a great seller, selling bootleg sets and, more so to condense my collection, have been selling off my Tagged Classic DVD series and replacing them with blu-ray box sets that have 24ish shows in each volume. The quality is awesome. Taken from the Network before things started getting edited, so shows are pretty much as they should be. Some musical edits etc of course.

Handy that the TC DVDs are still sought after and go for decent prices.

Plus some of the Tagged Classic releases were incomplete. A lot of the Network shows have longer run times and only a few of the TCs are longer, SummerSlam '92 being one.

Having physical media does seem to be quite popular still these days.

I did throw out most of my musical CDs and films though, so I'm not too bad.

There are thousands of records and books at my Mum's house that belonged to my Dad.

To be fair, apart from the wrestling collection, I collect nothing else and have a lovely home.

My view on digital v. physical media sometimes makes me feel old lol. I'm not someone who thinks digital is the end all be all. Convenience is nice but what happens when you don't have access to the internet? What happens if you can't pull up the file you downloaded on your computer/phone?

I went out and bought my son a blu ray/DVD player 2 weeks ago because he didn't have internet and his PS5 is non-disc.

I still buy cd's, I still buy DVDs/Blu rays depending on the movie. I'm on Amazon and other sites buying old shit from my childhood they just put on DVD/Blu Ray. But I imagine if I was a little younger and came up in a strictly digital age where kids were like 5 and carrying an ipod with 200 songs on it they illegally downloaded while mom was asleep lol. But with digital, that shit can be taken away tomorrow. No more Spider Man 2, no more season 1-11 of the Walking Dead.

Imagine if it was made illegal for Spotify and other streaming sites to allow people to stream albums without actually paying for them. It's criminal what we get away with and people still bitch lol.

I still have a ton of dvds and cds. I am not allowed to buy more though. lol

Wait until kids move out and I get one of the rooms....

Anyway it has been a while but I still like watching some of the various wrestling dvd sets that WWE has put out over the years with collections of matches and stuff about certain people or events or whatever.

This is true, I still keep certain sets. 24, old Simpsons, small selection of films.

Also, my favourite comedy TV shows, due to modern censorship.

You know, this is where digital media is a positive. For one, and I think we could even do a thread in a different part of the forum about "modern censorship" and censorship in media and how it's changed over the years for the better/worse (depending on the subject/show/etc) And two, what I like is that for example, South Park is completely uncensored on HBO Max. That saves me a shit ton of money because I love South Park but I don't love it enough to own all 20+ seasons just to be able to hear "fuck" freely.

But again, one day that could all be gone. This is a big part of the writer's strike, streaming and how they're not really getting paid like they feel they should. Listen to wrestlers talk about the Network. But even that discussion is subjective. If someone builds me a deck, do I still pay them a % for every time we use it? If I buy a painting, do we still give the artist a cut if we have people look at it? But on the flip--did we pay them for what it was worth?

Yeah man, we could run really deeply into this one. All valid points, really. A whole thread could easily be done covering it.

I have to draw the line somewhere with my own stuff, especially now we don't have a spare bedroom anymore with the new baby. And Mrs M doesn't like clutter.

Still got a ton of wrestling/sports and movie DVDs. I will admit to doing things more digitally but a bit of a clutterer as well so will keep them if I need them if/when technologically goes to shit.

Going back further…had a bunch of wrestling videotapes where sold about 15 of them for £60. Dirty bargain prices just to clear space but if I knew better then like I do now, would’ve eBayed/Amazoned them for any VHS collectors lol.

For example, had one of Gorilla Monsoon and Stan Lane hosting Wrestling Classics from various Superstars/others for Coliseum Video. Seller’s rather than buyer’s remorse there.

I skipped my whole WWF VHS collection about 14 years ago.

At the time, thought they were rubbish.

    Mistake.

That said, about half of them were ex-rental, so not in perfect condition, the rest were though.

I wonder if the VHS/DVD copies of WrestleMania VI will go up in value as the Piper/Brown match is removed from the event on Peacock. Is it still on the WWE Network for international people?

I don't believe in removing inappropriate stuff from things. Perhaps a message before the event, or even before the match explaining what's wrong with it would be a good educational tool.

Don't hide history, learn from it!

I got £1000 for my Tagged Classic collection via e-Bay.

Picked up the excellent bootlegs I mentioned before, the first 7 volumes of the WWE PPV Collection, so The Wrestling Classic all the way through to Survivor Series 2004.

They are ripped from the WWE Network, but Piper/Brown is on there. Figured it was because the seller got into the Network before the Network edits, but you've reminded me that it was Peacock edits, so may still be on the WWE Network. I re-subscribed to the Network recently, so will check.

I'm also building my WCW PPV collection from this seller too, as well as TNA and plan to add some other bits and bobs as well. TNA I'm only interested in 2002 up until about 2012, or thereabouts. 2002-03 because I never saw any of this and 2004 onwards because I loved TNA from 2004-2006/7 and had somewhat of an interest in it until about 2012.

Takes up FAR less room this way, which is needed, and they're now all in glorious HD.

I don't know if this TKO thing is going to change WWE at all, at least on screen. They'll probably have MMA fighters that I've never heard of make cameos or some dorky shit.

Man I wish Vince sold to Stephanie, Triple H, and/or Shane.
