    2013 NFL Thread

The Ravens are Super Bowl champions. That just means the start ot the 2013 offseason. The Chiefs have the 1st round draft pick, and the Ravens the last. There looks to be a lot of potential movement in the offseason.

Discuss the 2013 offseason, preseason, regular season, and 2013-2014 postseason here.

Very, very early 2013 regular season division picks.

    NFC East

1.NY Giants - They need to show up for Coughlin to keep his job this time around IMO
    2. Washington - Injuries take a toll on RG3
    3. Dallas - Jerry Jones finally sees the light, and Romo is gone after this season
    4. Philadelphia - Harsh, rebuild mode commences

    NFC West

    1. Seattle - Pete Carol grooms Wilson into one of the Top 10, arguably 5 QB's in the NFL
    2. San Francisco - The Harbaugh honeymoon starts to grow tiresome, luckily Kap keeps them in contention
    3. St. Louis - Shows improvement under Fisher
    4. Arizona - From the Superbowl only a few years ago, to again laughing stock of the league

    NFC North

    1. Green Bay - Need Charles Woodson/Clay Matthews to stay healthy
    2. Minnesota - Ponder improves even more
    3. Chicago - Cutler stays healthy, and moves into elite QB status
    4. Detroit - Whispers start happening about Megatron wanting out of Detroit

    NFC South

    1. New Orleans - With Payton back at the helm, the Saints take over
    2. Atlanta - Misses the playoffs, questions start to emerge about Matty Ice and his future in Atlanta
    3. Tampa Bay
    4. Carolina - Rumblings start to occur about Newton being released in the following offseason

    AFC East

    1. New England - Start to trust in Ridley more but lose trust in Gronk
    2. Buffalo - Finally start to show signs of the early 90s Bills
    3. Dolphins - Showing signs of changing direction
    4. NY Jets - Rex is fired midseason

    AFC West

    1. Denver
    2. Oakland
    3. Kansas City
    4. San Diego - Rivers is cut in the offseason

    AFC North

    1. Pittsburgh - Healthy Big Ben means the Ravens go back to Wildcard hunting
    2. Baltimore - Contract distractions along with a healthy Steelers team means a topsy/turvy season
    3. Cincinnati - Falls back a bit
    4. Cleveland

    AFC South

    1. Indianapolis - Luck proves why he is better than RG3
    2. Houston - Falls back a bit
    3. Tennessee
    4. Jacksonville

There's a lot of local chatter about Ed Reed signing with the Patriots this offseason. He and Belichick have a man crush thing going on with each other much like Belichick and Ochocinco had before he came to New England. But I'm sure Baltimore is hearing this chatter too and would definitely not want to see Reed bolster a young and rising New England defense, so chances are they'll re-sign him. If it happens though, I'd be stoked.

Here are the early 2014 Super Bowl favorites:

    New England 6 to 1
    San Fran 7 to 1
    Denver 8 to 1
    Green Bay 10 to 1
    Houston 10 to 1
    Seattle 12 to 1
    Baltimore 14 to 1
    Pittsburgh 14 to 1
    Atlanta 16 to 1
    New Orleans 16 to 1

I would love to see Anquan Boldin in Seahawks blue but hes claimjng to retire if the ravens cut him.

I could not think of a more perfect player for Belichick or New England at this stage for that team. Do you really think the Patriots would pony up for him?

I do, because Belichick has praised him so much over the years to the point of calling him the best safety ever. He's an unrestricted free agent and I'd be shocked if the Patriots don't make him a substantial offer (substantial for a guy who will be 35 years old when the season starts, mind you - it's not like he's going to break the bank). The question will be does Baltimore have the ability to match it. My understanding is that Baltimore has a lot of guys becoming free agents this year on defense (in addition to Ray Lewis retiring) so they have to make a lot of signings. If they do match I think he stays with Baltimore. After all they just won the Super Bowl. If not I think he makes the move. Granted some other teams will also be courting him.

I think Reed will go to Green Bay and it will be farewell to Charles Woodson.

I can't see us ponying up the cash to pay him, we have so many soon to be free agents not least of all is Rodgers, and boy oh boy is he going to get paid. That still leaves Matthews and Raji, so as much as I would want Reed in Green Bay I would be shocked to see it happen. I honestly can't see Baltimore letting him go, they've just lost there talisman in Lewis and they probably don't like the PR angle of another veteran icon leaving.

Tom Brady just agreed to a 3yr/27million $ extension with the Pats. talk about a selfless act. granted he doesn't need the money anymore, but damn, what a gesture. my opinion on him just went up a bit.

Jesus, they're getting him at a bargain price now for that position. Isn't Brees making like 17 million now?

Smart of him to do that as his career winds down. He's made boatloads of money, and now he wants to secure the legacy with some more Super Bowls. Smart.

gives them so much more cap room. i hate it, but yet it was a great move for them.
christopherson, cullen jenkins got released today, and he has said he's interested in coming back to the packers.

A second round pick for Smith? That's pretty steep. I thought it'd be a 4th at best...

After the combine his price went way up. He's the only halfway decent quarterback on the market, and the Chiefs don't have any real leverage to get a better deal.

True. I hope the 49ers use some of their stockpile of picks to trade for Revis.

It's so funny that the 49ers have a stockpile of picks and are already 3 deep at virtually every position but CB and QB now. It's almost annoying to have so many when half wont even make the team.

Exactly the same pick that the Chiefs gave up for Matt Cassel (#34 overall). Weird.

So if Steven Jackson does indeed walk away from his $7M player option in St. Louis, will there be a market for him? Will he be offered anywhere near the money he would have made as a Ram?

He won't get big money at his age, but Detroit, Atlanta and Green Bay would all be after him in a second I'd imagine.

Fuck that noise. I want Jackson in Denver. He is the most underrated back of the last 5 or so years. With no one else as a viable offensive option in St. Louis, he still put up 1000+ rushing stats year in and year out. That guy was a beast of a workhorse, and I feel he still has some quality miles left. Especially if he is surrounded by talent.

The 2nd round pick and conditional next year for Smith is just fine. There is no one else near Smith's talent level availible in free agency. There is also no one as a prospected talent for this years draft. The Chiefs picked a bad year to suck. They should have done this last year, to land Luck or RG3.

As someone who will be rooting against the Ravens going forward I'm happy they're using up so much of their cap space on him. Which is not to say that he doesn't deserve a big pay day. He's like Eli Manning after his first championship. He might not be able to carry you to a title but you know he's good enough to win it.

Ahahahaha!! Somewhere Aaron Rodgers, twice the QB Flacco is, is grinning like the cat that ate the canary.

Joe deserved a raise, but that raise was a little ridiculous.

i really hope aaron doesn't feel he needs to be the highest paid qb in the league. i mean he deserves it and all, but if he does that will decimate green bays cap.

On one hand, Flacco getting that much money seems ridiculous, but looking at his numbers here:

    PASSING STATS
SEASON TEAM GP CMP ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD LNG INT FUM QBR RAT
    2008 16 257 428 60.0 2,971 6.94 14 70 12 6 43.2 80.3
    2009 16 315 499 63.1 3,613 7.24 21 72 12 6 55.0 88.9
    2010 16 306 489 62.6 3,622 7.41 25 67 10 7 60.4 93.6
    2011 16 312 542 57.6 3,610 6.66 20 74 12 9 59.7 80.9
    2012 16 317 531 59.7 3,817 7.19 22 61 10 6 46.8 87.7
    Career 80 1,507 2,489 60.5 17,633 7.08 102 74 56 34 - 86.3

It's pretty stunning how consistent he's been. And by consistent I mean EXACTLY THE SAME NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES. New coordinators, new running backs, new receivers, and the man starts every game and turns in a mirror copy of the same season again and again. While I don't think that makes him elite or anything, there's something to be said for turning in nothing less than "good" from your first snap all the way to the present.

Teams can negotiate with players this weekend. Dunta Robinson is already a Cheif. Any predictions for the weekend? I'm guessing Wallace will be a Dolphin, Welker goes back to NE, and Sean Smith will go to Philly.

Boldin for a 6TH ROUNDER? What a steal by the 49ers. I'd take that over the Harvin deal all day every day. But damn the NFC West (and NFC in general) is so strong now.

Harbaugh hooking up Harbaugh with that deal, hmmm

Free agency has officially started and thing are getting interesting.

To catalog the big moves, thus far Nnamdi Asomugha (PHI) and Leon Washington (SEA) have been released. And rumors are going nuts saying Ryan Fitzpatrick (BUF) is getting released today as well.

We may as well say that the Dolphins have signed WR Mike Wallace (PIT) too, because that is pretty much a guarantee.

They didn't really have any choice. Wallace is the only guy even remotely available that fits their needs, and if they didn't get him, Tannehill would spend another year throwing to CFL backups.

30 year old injury prone wide receivers aren't exactly something that makes me go weak in the knees. Especially since his contract would be even bigger than Wallace's.

Besides, they need a vertical threat. And Jennings was never really that even at his best.

Probably, though if Wallace hadn't hit the market, I bet he could have named his price.

Also, Indianapolis has signed RT Gordon Cherilus (DET).

Oh shit, the Miami Dolphins have also signed LB Dannell Ellerbe (BAL). Baltimore thought they were going to get him back too. They've now lost 3 starting linebackers in the same offseason.

So it looks like thus far the Ravens have lost 3 linebackers and both of their safeties. But at least they gave $20 million to Joe Flacco!

Lol at the Patriots front office.

Can't wait to hear the spin on this one.

Having Gronk and Hernandez BOTH stay healthy to produce even close to the same amount of consistency that Welker provided during his duration with the Patriots would be like pretending David Ortiz is going to carry the Red Sox on his back all year without at least hitting the DL a handful of times, and bitching about his contract at some point or another.

    Buncha pink hats around here.

Sorry, letting a guy go to one of your highest tier opponents for a lousy 2 mill is bad business, and lets not pretend all these guys become scrubs when they leave the Pats, because they all don't. Ty Law was still good for a couple years post Pats, and Samuel has been quite good.

Did you just call the Patriots front office pink hats?

This is the gift and the curse of the Patriots. The curse being they never flinch at getting rid of a star player, a fan favorite. You can't help but think if they only held onto a few of these guys, whether it's Willie McGinest, Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Adam Vinatieri, Deion Branch, Asante Samuel or Wes Welker... that they'd have that 4th ring by now. And that's extremely frustrating at times. On the other hand, their financial discipline and unattachment to these fan favorites is a big part of what makes them the only perennial 12 game winner in the NFL. It's that 'fuck you the system is bigger than the player unless your name is Brady' attitude that makes them who they are.

So they singed Danny Amendola to replace Welker. Now I don't know the exact details of the Welker deal, but I believe it's 2 year/12 mil and I'm guessing that's mostly all guaranteed? I dunno someone can correct me if I'm wrong there. But the Amendola deal is 5 years/31 mil/10 mil guaranteed. So let's say they're both 10 mil guaranteed. Welker 2 years. Amendola 5 years. I'm not going to be a Belichick fanboy here... I'd take Welker for 2 years over Amendola for 5 years any fucking day of the week. Brady's window is short and those next two years are huge. Welker is a lock for 100 catches a year and takes hit after hit and gets up like it aint no thang. 32 years old vs 26 years old, I don't care, Welker is the man. But... I can see why the Amendola signing is a very acceptable replacement. So while this clearly seems like it was somewhat personal and they soured on Welker despite his immense output, the Patriots will march on and probably be in the AFC title game again this year.

The thought of that game being against Denver and Welker torching them for the win is very very scary though.

As a side note, I think the fact that the NFL's leading receiver over the last 6 years (#1 in yards and receptions) got a 2 year-$12 million deal is a reflection of just how much the owners completely dominate the players in this league from a CBA perspective.

Whilst I'm disappointed with missing out on Jackson I can't say I'm surprised. Thompson just doesn't do FA it's practically his whole ethos. You can't really argue with the man but I can't help but feel we need a fair bit of help this year. Our secondary has potential with Heyward, Shields and Williams but still need's a lot of work. I would argue both our OL and DL needs help (Raji definitely needs some help) and we still need to pay Rodgers. Like Hitty said I think Packer fans are definitely in wait and see mode.

Yeah $15 million a year is not worth it for him and the role he would play on the Packers.

Tweet from Greg Jennings: That Adrian Peterson guy is their QB right @gregjennings

47.5 Million over 5 years. 18 mill is guaranteed.

It's actually $45 mil over 5 years with an annual pro-bowl bonus of $500k.

Adding onto this, a guy who recorded 63 sacks in his first 6 years including 11 last year just gets cut like he's not a top 3 DE in the league.

But hey if the Patriots end up signing him there will be no complaints from me. He just became the top free agent available.

Not really. They can just cut him if he isn't performing up to his contract. Yeah they will owe him the 18 million regardless but its not like he has to be on their team for 5 years.

Well it looks like Matt Flynn is headed to the Raiders and Carson Palmer is headed to the Cardinals. While neither guy is lighting the world on fire, this is a pretty great move for everyone involved. The Seahawks get some picks, the Raiders save 8 million off the cap for a quarterback who, if he's any good, will be around much longer than Palmer would have been, and the Cardinals get someone physically capable of getting Fitzgerald the ball.

The Raiders and Cardinals will still suck, but the Raiders get to continue their rebuilding process, and since the Cards have no running game, Palmer throwing the ball to Fitz 200 times should be great television.

Looks like I'm the only Jags fan on this board....

I'm used to it, we don't have many fans for this team, especially with the way they have been playing for the past several seasons. New ownership, new front office, new head coach, and basically a new team coming up for this season.

That being said, I'm loving the direction the Jags are finally heading. I'm in love with the new coach Gus Bradley. Dude just seems to have a fire under him that is contagious as hell and inspires all around him. New GM Caldwell is a proven successful commodity, and I think he will build this team the right way. It's nice not to have that stale feeling in the air in Jacksonville anymore. Blaine Gabbert is obviously not the guy everyone wants to lead their team, but hopefully the kid pulls it together and makes everything work out. With the right cast around him, he could turn out to be a nice late bloomer. (hopefully)

I'm a season ticket holder, and have been since the start of the franchise in '95. I personally don't care much about the record and all that, because it's a blast to watch pro football live and be a part of the tailgating community and all that. I will go out on a limb and predict a 7-9 record this season, which isn't great, but would be a huge turnaround from 2-14 last season. Seeing the new leadership in place, I just feel the Jags will be the next version of the Seahawks. Up and coming explosive team full of youth and fun to watch. A couple of drafts with these guys in charge and it will be a different ballgame.

I'd love to see the Jags do well for a change. They've really had some tough luck post-Mark Brunell.

The rams are bleeding, i'm praying this draft goes well

Sam bradford's huge contract has to have something to do with losing some of these guys.

Is anyone else feeling like this is San Francisco's year? They made it within one play of winning the Super Bowl last year and I don't see any reason why they won't be just as good or better this year.

-They added Anquan Boldin, Glenn Dorsey (look out for him as a situational rusher) and Nnamdi Asomogha.
-Their only losses were Randy Moss, Delanie Walker, Isaac Sopoaga, and Dashon Goldson.
-They have the best defense in the league.
-Colin Kaepernick and Aldon Smith are only going to keep getting better.

I think their biggest competition is probably Seattle, who is pretty similarly stacked. They're very similar teams: young stud QBs, great running games, and big, athletic defenses. From my perspective, Jim Harbaugh is a better coach than Pete Carroll and that gives San Fran the edge.

Yeah, I feel like San Francisco, Seattle and Denver are on a completely different level from everyone else.

I feel like both Seatle and San Francisco are going to have drop offs in QB play.

Defensive coordinators have had a whole off season now to look at these guys.

Honestly, if San Francisco does have a drop off, I'm not sure how much it will matter.

San Fran looks great but the NFC is so stacked right now that it could go any number of ways. Plus let's not forget the Super Bowl loser curse. And like Knee said I wouldn't be surprised if Kaepernick takes a step back. Denver does look like the best in the AFC followed by the usual powerhouses.

Its a quaterback driven league. If your QB playes worse its gonna effect you.

So Darrelle Revis going to the Bucs in exchange for their first round pick (#13 overall) and a fourth or third rounder next year.

Love the trade for the Bucs. Basically, they were a team with solid talent everywhere other than the secondary last year. So this off-season they've signed Dashon Goldson, a Pro Bowl Safety, and now they add the best corner in football. I know Revis is coming off a torn ACL, but there's not much reason to doubt that he's still an elite corner if not still the best in football. Revis will be 28 in July, which puts him right in the prime of his career. Cornerback is a position well-suited to long careers (Champ Bailey, Rod Woodson, Ronde Barber, Green) so it's not unreasonable that they could get a solid seven or eight years out of Revis.

On the downside, they have to pay him big money. His new contract is for six years and $96 million, or $16 million per season. That's big money, but the Bucs can afford it: they have very few big contracts and all of their top guys are signed for several more years. Even after adding Revis they are still $8 million under the cap, giving them plenty of money to sign their draft picks.

I like Tampa next year. Really, it all comes down to Josh Freeman. He looked great at times last year and terrible at other times. If he makes the leap they are a Super Bowl contender. On offense they have Doug Martin, the NFL's best young running back. They have Vincent Jackson, one of the better receivers in the NFL. They have a studly offensive line anchored by Carl Nicks. Their defense is full of young talent: Gerald McCoy, Adrian Clayborne, Lavonte David. Unfortunately, it's tough sledding in the NFC South: they have to beat New Orleans, Carolina, and Atlanta to get out of the division.

For the Jets, I'm not sure where they're going. It's nice that they now have the #13 pick, but it's unlikely they'll find a player of Revis' caliber with that pick. They still have no quarterback and are really hurting for talent on both defense and offense. Hard to see any scenario for the team other than sucking again, Rex Ryan getting fired, and starting over.
