What do you think of this potential Ian Kinsler for Prince Fielder trade?

I was hoping the Jays would be in on Kinsler.

Guess it is official, pending Fielder and Selig's approval. Panic move by the Tigers in order to re-sign Scherzer.

I hope not, only because I was looking forward to the Tigers being bogged down with two first basemen on $200 million dollar contracts.

Just heard about the Fielder trade on my way home. It's absolutely brilliant on both sides. Texas is a MUCH better fit for his left handed power and has a young 2B ready. Detroit had no 2B (Infante's a free agent) and had been forcing Austin Jackson to lead off. Kinsler is a great lead off hitter, solidifies the middle infield and makes for a MASSIVE improvement to the overall defense. This moves Miggy back to first and Nick Castellanos (the Tigers top prospect who they had been forcing to play left solely because Miggy blocked him on the depth chart) goes back to his primary position at 3B. Very rapidly they've gone from a dire defense to a very strong one.

TimeSplitter is full of shit calling it a panic move done to resign Max. They just filled two holes with Kinsler (lead off and second base) and it allows them to move the best hitter in the game off a position he shouldn't have been playing to begin with and back into a situation that's better for his long term health. With the over-inflated number of hits Verlander has allowed to the left side over the past two years, this is a massive improvement.

It also avoids the inevitable sell off when Illich, who basically has a bottomless wallet, dies. I mentioned before hoping they could trade Prince but expecting them to move V-Mart—this is much more favorable to them than any deal I could have envisioned.

I think it is a great move by the Tigers. Dump off Fielder's contract and fill the two holes you have mentioned. I just think that the Tigers as a whole act too quickly because of Illich.

    Very true.

Fielder was only there because of Illich, really. At the time there was a lot leaking out that Dombrowski had no interest in Fielder and Illich told him to sign him. This gets something out of that signing and really frees the team up. Getting Miggy off third not only frees up that for Castellanos, but opens up left field (where they had been forcing Nick to play) for them to play around with. That could be someone from within or using some of that money to bring in another veteran for a year or two.

I used to love Fielder. Played ball with him as a kid (lived about a couple miles from Cecil and Lil Chubby came over to the little league park to show off his hitting one day) but I was really ready for him to go during the playoffs. The moment he stopped coming home, his time was up with the team. I think he's going to go back to absolutely raking in Texas. Comerica is very tough on left handed power hitters and I expect both teams to improve from this.

Final game with Boston. Tigers were ahead and he rounded third. If he kept going, he scores without a play as Pedroia was trying for a double play with V-Mart running between first and second. Prince came to a complete stop between third and home, Dustin tagged Victor and then threw fatty out.

I remember that play, but I just took it to mean that he is a terrible runner. I agree that he will do quite well in Texas. I do think this will have a bad result for Cabrera, though. Who's going to hit behind him? With Fielder hitting behind him, he won 2 MVPs. Hard to see them go after another solid #4 hitter.

I think the days of needing 2 mega sluggers are over. Cabrera will hit regardless, and him winning MVPs isn't their goal. V-Mart, or another solid power-ish hitter they bring in, will be fine as protection. Fielder wasn't that great this year anyway.

V-Mart is all the protection Miggy needs. Especially if they look to free agency to fill left (guys like Nelly Cruz and Beltran are out there). A-Jax hitting down in the lineup also really helps with protection and Austin's development and production.

I thought the Fielder trade was a good one but trading away Doug Fister in a weak starting pitching market for peanuts only to then go and (probably, the money hasn't been revealed yet but it's not like Nathan would have come cheaply) replace that gap in the payroll with an ageing "proven closer" makes absolutely zero sense to me whatsover.

yeah, Detroit is doing some questionable business. It's better then what Seattle's doing, which is bringing back crappy old Mariners.

Love getting Hanigan for the Rays, a really nice deal on the extension too, even if it means Heath Bell is here, although with the Molina signing already looks like Lobaton is going somewhere too

The Mariners are always the threat. Ask Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Nick Swisher or Prince Fielder. The Mariners put some money out there, other teams get nervous and pay a bit more for the player, and the Mariners go back to obscurity. I really expect them to make a big splash this year with a new club president and jack Z working for his job this season, but Im not expecting a huge name like Cano

Saltalamacchia is reportedly signing a 3-year deal with the Marlins for $21 million. Assuming Loria doesn't send him packing a year from now, I think it's a good move.

I agree the Yanks will still sign Cano. They can talk about lowering their payroll but they know the East is tough top to bottom and the risk of missing the playoffs twice in a row is too much to bear.

Not really mad at Ellsbury for taking the Yankees deal. It was well known the Red Sox wouldn't match market value and I'm glad the Sox stayed away from 7 years/153 mil. It's a lot like the Johnny Damon signing, but much less surprising.

On the Fister deal, the return was very light but it filled holes. They wanted Smyly in the rotation, now they have that. The trade got a replacement lefty specialist and utility infielder, filling the holes from Smyly moving to the rotation and Ramon Santiago leaving. Smyly's under team control for four years (to Fister's two years), so if he pans out in the rotation as a lefty starter, it'll help keep salary from getting nuttier. They did turn right around and bring in Nathan which should be a very good fit—especially at a cheaper contract than Scott Kazmir got.

They've cut a lot of salary this offseason while filling holes. I'd imagine Max will see a big contract sooner than later but I really expect them to sign Choo to a 100 million type deal. I thought they were a great fit for him (potential hole in left and in need of an OBP machine who can lead off) before they started shaking things up. Now with talk of them going after him, it just seems the perfect fit for both sides.

They could easily be looking at having a team set in the next few days of:

    SP: Justin Verlander
    SP: Max Scherzer
    SP: Anibal Sanchez
    SP: Drew Smyly
    SP: Rick Porcello
    CP: Joe Nathan

    LF: Shin Shoo Choo
    RF: Torii Hunter
    1B: Miguel Cabrera
    DH: Victor Martinez
    2B: Ian Kinsler
    CF: Austin Jackson
    3B: Nick Castellanos
    C: Alex Avila
    SS: Jose Iglesias

To me, that looks much more balanced than what they had last season. Particularly when you look at defense and having a proper leadoff man. Yeah, I think they could have gotten a lot more for Fister, but it's hardly a disaster. I am going to miss him though. Such a great guy and he's one of those players who you want out there in a big game even if he doesn't have his good stuff. Either he or Porcello were going to be traded this offseason and Porcello, while he's never fully clicked on, is just 24 with five MLB seasons under his belt. His stats were improved all around last season (particularly his K/9 rate) and his 4.32 ERA looks a lot better when you consider that he gave up nine runs in one game. Like all their starters, he stands to improve greatly from the massively improved infield defense. He and Justin in particular gave up a frightening number of grounders past Miggy/Peralta on the left side the past two years.

Ok, I'm rambling now, so I'll shut the fuck up.

The club president is retiring, The GM is on a 1 year deal and the Mariners are gettting a huge influx of money from buying Root Sports. I expected them to try to spend, didnt expect them to succeed.

Knee, Seattle had to overspend to get him here

Seattle have the prospects to make Friedman pull the trigger on a Price deal. As much as it makes sense for him to be traded, and he will be traded, Friedman has leverage with the current payroll situation that a deal doesn't need to happen immediately so he can wait until the massive haul he'll be asking for lands on his doorstep. If that deal arises in the next week then it'll happen then. I can't see how Walker won't be the centerpiece of any deal with Seattle, Franklin has a high chance of being included with the Cano signing too. I'd be delighted to get Walker.

Pleased to see Cano leave the AL East also obviously. With the money available from not signing Cano I can't see the Yankees being overly happy with Kelly Johnson as their every day 2B, he was barely getting playing time down the stretch for the Rays last year, so I wonder if they try and trade for Brandon Phillips or make a move elsewhere, because if they don't that could be a terrible infield.

I am just thinking when we are talking about 240 million or 220 million whats the difference? I'd much rather play on a team that is relevant.

I'd love for the Reds to trade Phillips to the yanks and then sign Infante.

Where are you getting 220 million from? Reports were that the Yanks wouldn't go past 175.

I just made it up but what you are saying is the Mariners just arbitrarily out bid everyone by 70 Million?

As Mills said, they needed to offer more to get him to play in Seattle. You just said it yourself - if they only outbid the Yanks by 20 million he probably would have stayed in NY.

Plus Jay-Z is a hustler baby, he'll sell water to a well.

Napoli re-signs with Boston for two years, $32 million. Love it.

I'm not sure if this story got out of New England but after they won it Napoli went wild celebrating in Boston. He belongs here.

The best part is he turned down better offers to stay here.

Also, Beltran signs with the Yanks for 3 years/45 mil. Solid add I suppose, he will mash on the short right field porch if he can stay healthy.

They can give him a portion of games at DH, so that'll help. Sorianos gotta be primary DH now.

Mariners desperately need to get some more help. I wouldn't mind Cruz there, though I dont know if they'd let him go across the AL West

But is he a hall of famer? He's only got 3 more wins than Tim Wakefield.

He played for the Jays during the dominant AL East era and put up ridiculous numbers and innings.

But as much as I love him, he's not a sure-thing for the hall. I would love to see him in though. But yes his low win total may be the thing that keeps him out.

One of the classiest professional athletes I've ever watched. I’m really happy to see him “retire as a Jay” as it were. When they retire his number, I will be there.

Probably not a hall of famer though.

"By mid-day Friday, Seattle had heard that some team bid nine years and $225 million for Robinson Cano, so the Mariners upped their bid to $240 million and 10 years before apparently realizing the initial bid had come from themselves, too. "

    Please be true.

It's not really surprising though. All rap lyric jokes aside, he's an incredible businessman. Look at what he did with the Nets. Bought in, oversaw/hyped up the move to Brooklyn, made them the team everyone was talking about, cashed out his shares and now they suck again. He also got himself a deal similar to what MLB stars get when he inked his partnership with Live Nation for $150 million a while back. The Cano contract is definitely a boon for his new agency and I think you'll see more big name stars sign there now, but I never doubted that it would be successful.

How could he not be? He put together one of the most impressive consecutive string of dominant seasons since Koufax.

He may not have a ton of wins, but his win percentage is better than a TON of guys currently in the hall. There really isn't an argument to be made against him being in the hall.

This is one of the things that drives me nuts when people argue sports. Everything must be a definitive or a superlative.

Do I think he is in? Sure. But there clearly is an argument against him as well. Take a look at his comparables.

You know what, I read an really good article on Bleacher Report and changed my mind. Doc belongs in the Hall of Fame, it's just going to come down to whether the Hall voters value advanced metrics by that time or not.

His ERA+ is WAY better than any of those guys and last I checked, none of them had two Cy Young awards. He also has at least two no-hitters that I can think of, plus the one in the play-offs that was absolutely epic.

I love Jimmy Key by the way. No one gives that guy enough credit. Great finesse pitcher.

Only thirteen pitchers in the entire hall of fame have less innings pitched than Halladay, including relievers. That counts for something a lot more than his low win total.

Can you compare a guy that came up when starters finished games to someone from Halliday's era though? Even with relievers, many of them were starters first in the era of "start and finish". He had a somewhat small window, just less than a decade really, I get that. But the way you've said that, without context, makes it seem worse than it is.

Nice to see Maddux, Glavine and Big Hurt get in the HOF, all 3 worthy of their selection. Sucks for Biggio, only 2 votes shy of getting in. He might sneak in next year, but not sure with Pedro, Big Unit and Smoltz on the next ballot

so it looks like A-Rod is done for the entire season. It is hard to defend him but here I go -
    1) Why did he deserve 3 times the penalty as everyone else? They all lied and they all cheated - they should all get the same penalty.
    2) And if you are going to ban someone 211 games (or 162 games now), why negotiate the 50 and 100 games bans at all? Pls don't tell me he obstructed justice and hindered the investigation, they all did that too. Remember Braun claimed the tester contaminated his sample. Melky set up a fake website. Many wives/GF were involved.
    3) The completely heavy handed way MLB did their investigation. Threatening reluctant witnesses, not presenting physical evidence of claims, relying on questionable witnesses motive
    4) The uneven focus. Was Ryan Braun scrutinized the same way? This seemed very personal as Selig, who did not like Rodriguez, wanted to seem tough right before retiring after letting the PED era go unchecked for 20 years.
    5) The talking heads like to talk about how A-Rod is the only BioGenesis guy to fight his suspension, but he was also the only one not offered 50 games or even the 65 that Braun was.

I can't believe Selig and MLB have made me feel bad for A-Rod. He is so unsympathetic but it happened. I feel like he got screwed big time.
