Keeping handing AJ shit storylines. Therefore, whenever he does turn heel, he'll be convincing enough to be sick and tired of the cards dealt to him.

AJ heel turn could work but with him out of the title picture bang goes any series against Hardy.

First thing I thought of when I heard it'd be in the Alamodome.

Comes off so much better in a packed smaller venue.

Haha TNA are genuinely mental. I think there's a smaller building inside the building (like the Madison Square Garden Theater), but why bother when they can find another place that hosts <5000 people that doesn't have a name as A BIG FUCKING STADIUM to the normal man. So, so bush league.

Its a ballsy move, I'll give them that. If they wanted to try and do something like that, it would work overseas. We have seen them pack a lot of buildings in England and France, but in America, I don't know. I am not sure what they could bust out that would get that many people into that building. Unless, they think Aces and Eights is as over as the NWO which it is not.

At their hottest point, on the biggest show they ever ran, in their first excursion out of the Impact Zone, in one of their hottest territories, they drew 8,000 in Detroit. This is going to be a fucking disaster.

That's what I was thinking (perhaps there's a smaller venue within/attached to the AlamoDome).

I even notice it at WrestleMania (in the big stadiums that are filled), audiences don't come across that great in those venues. I can't imagine in a building 1/10 filled (at best)

I went to to BFG last month and what made it come across as great on TV after I rewatched was it was a smaller venue that was jam packed.

I got to think there's a smaller venue attached/within Alamadome as mentioned above.

The '97 rumble was super papered though, probably 40,000+ peeps got in for free. The WWF was still down the shitter at the time.

And I'm truly hoping Lockdown is at the Illusions Theatre venue and not the actual Dome, that would be mental by TNA.

The idea of the Aces & 8s listening to their own theme song while drinking beer and hanging with chicks made me laugh inside.

This upcoming Kurt/Doc match should be interesting to see if and how Wes and Garett get involved.

I wouldn't say it was that papered. I think the only seats they didn't sell that night were the ones on the Hard Camera side.

Watching it doesn't really mean anything as "papering" refers to giving away free tickets to get people to come to your show.

The number of people actually there wouldn't indicate anything but the number of people willing to watch the show for free.

    Huh?

Papered means that they give away tickets for free (as in 'comps'), not that there are empty seats.

According to Jim Cornette 47,000 was paid for while 12,500 were comps. Tickets were ludicrously cheap too just to get people in the building. Ringside was $175 while rest of the tickets cost $18, $14, $10. The gate was pretty much the same as the Rumble in '98 despite that show drawing around 18,000 fans.

I remember reading in Powerslam that roughly 40,000 tickets were comps, not sure what is true.Huh?

i think when people talk about the separate venue in the alamodome, they didn't realize this is what they meant. i would not doubt in the slightest that the arena has some sort of partition system to cut the area in to 2 or 3 'separate' venues.

How many think 1.3.13 will be Sting?

I assume they pay for the amount of the stadium they are using here with it being set-up as a smaller venue. They arent going to be paying the full rental for a 70,000 seater stadium. They might be looking at smaller events to fill in the gaps in their calendar

Name value of hiring the arena. To someone not paying attention it sounds pretty good. It's probably an upwardly mobile move as well. If they do a lot better than they think they might be able to open up more seating for an appropriate cost.

It doesn't feel too dissimilar to the shows they've put on at baseball grounds to me

Fair point, whats the actual capacity for the smaller part of the alodome though? because i can still see it as being a major disaster.

Realistically, this won't be some kind of giant disaster or anything. It's just a marketing tool to say that they ran the Alamodome, while expecting a similar crowd to the ones that they've been drawing. It's not all that different from WWE jacking up the attendance to make themselves look good, aside from the fact that this one will obviously be more visually clear.

For TNA's sake though, I really home they sell out the part of the venue that they're using, because to shorten the playing field, and then still fail to fill the seats would be a PR disaster.

I was disappointed by AJ Styles' promo. It came off really generic, talking about "no longer being the janitor cleaning up TNA's messes." Specifics would've enhanced the promo tenfold. Give an instance where TNA made a mistake and then trotted AJ out to wow the crowd and win them back over. Would that have been so hard?

Also if I wanted to nitpick, Styles should've been saying "company man" and not "corporate man." While it's semantics, the words conjure up different imagery. A company man portrays loyalty while a corporate man connects to a man in a suit and AJ Styles does not pull off a suit very well.

Agree 100% with both points you bring up here.

Not a fan of the delivery, but glad they're trying something new with him.

The guy is still in the prime of his career but he's directionless right now in that company.

I reckon the lack of direction is mainly his fault though and this wont make me popular but the same can be said of Joe. They show real interest in doing stuff with Joe then he normally gets himself into bother.

Changing companies would give Styles a plethora of new matches he can work but if he's not able to evolve as a performer he doesn't have long before he's too old to be the 'phenomenal one'.

Pretty important year for him all things considered

The trouble with both Joe and Styles, (but more so for Joe,) is that you'd imagine that's its hard to get enthusiastic about your job too much when you know that your one really big chance came and was squandered through no fault of yours. I get the feeling that ever since TNA buried him, Joe has just been cashing a check. Which is crap, but considering the fact that they basically wasted 5 years of momentum and hard work for no reason, I doubt I'd do any different in his place.

With AJ, it has to be frustrating, even though he's said to be one of the nicest people on the planet. He's been used by TNA to plug the holes in their product for 10 years now, and he really doesn't have much to show for it. They keep him highlighted on their shows, but they don't actually USE him in any way that he could actually be helpful. That's been true for years now. Putting the guy in promo heavy blood feuds is an absurd waste of him.

Helpful to whom? Him? They've tried just about every angle with AJ they can. Made him the new nature boy, put a stable behind him, had him chasing a stable, had him be the highflying ass kicking machine who wins the title. The fact is apart from his matches he doesn't engage people and with a more static roster it's hard to keep matches fresh. They've had him beat Sting at bound for glory and so I think they've used him in lots of ways that's helpful for him. I actually think he has a much bigger reputation with wrestling fans than he fully deserves.

Also there hasnt been a coherent direction with the booking in a long time which leads to most of the jumping around TNA does. They seem to have a direction and I would be stunned if they arent attempting a proper succesful long term build of Styles that will end with him winning the World Heavyweight Championship. If they don't shake him up and bring him out of himself he's going to be the next RVD and by that I mean stale and wrestling the same bloody match he's been having for the past 14 years

But the thing about all of those things that they've done for him have been either fundamentally flawed in vision or execution beyond his individual role in them, or have been forcing him to play wildly against type. Realistically, AJ probably should have always been TNA's Tommy Dreamer once they became a mainstream promotion. He's seen as the homegrown star of TNA who has been there since the first show, and he's tremendously well liked by their fanbase. What he is capable of contributing is very entertaining matches and the occasional good angry promo. But he doesn't have the ability to project a ton of depth in his promos, and he's never going to get any better at it, so having him in highlighted promo heavy feuds like this is a tremendous mistake, and a misuse of what worth he does have.

Now, I certainly don't think that AJ has any real place in the title scene aside from maybe being an occasional title challenger during transitional times. He's basically TNA's Rey Mysterio. Beloved, exciting to watch, miserable in prolonged angle heavy feuds. WWE found ways to work around that and get the most out of him, and TNA never has.

Also there hasnt been a coherent direction with the booking in a long time which leads to most of the jumping around TNA does. Part of the reason I'm so frustrated with TNA right now is because from January to July last year, they did have a really cohesive vision for the product and built something that was stable and interesting, and ever since then they've just been knocking the foundation down piece by piece. I don't have much faith of them recovering from this in the near future, and they absolutely picked the wrong talent to work this "TNA is holding me back" storyline.

I think the vision is still there but the gearing is wrong. I'm really convinced that Storm will get a retribution arc that started what a year ago? The dvon thing again I think showed some realistic characters. My main concern is their speed of execution is often lacking but genuinely I think DVON in particular has been involved in relatable emotive storytelling. His feud with Bubba made sense, his feud with Pope was actually surprisingly intelligent and as close to an accurate piece of social commentary as we might see from wrestling for a while.

There are good things about but I feel like a lot of people give up before they arrive. I'm not claiming the high ground here I'm down on A&8s at the minute. Even though I'm expecting a very poised take on Fight Club with Joseph Park/Abyss being the lead.

I fully agree on Devon at the very least. It amazes me how little the Bully Ray and Dinero feuds were talked about, because they were something special.

Yeah, they were on a great role last year and have blew it out with some silly booking.

They effectively pushed Storm and Aries back when they were really getting over with their characters to appease Jeff Hardy, who whilst maybes be a good merch seller and a good wrestler, is one of the most boring guys in the business. he doesn't even attempt to draw people into the story and because of that no one gives a shit. They should have had Storm take the title of Roode in what would have been a great blow off and cement him as a top talent but instead he's back in the mid-card with no direction.

Aries should have less of a problem getting back near the top as he is good at drawing the audience into what he does but his title reign seems pretty pointless just to use him to put Jeff Hardy over a month later, if they were going to do that they should have pulled the trigger on him becoming champ earlier and build up more momentum or have him keep it a bit longer.

A&E had me drawn in for a bit but they seem to really want to drag it out and its become boring. They should imo at least be unveiling them once a month in lead up to the main guy in the group. They seem a bit directionless with this angle as well and it shows when they just have them randomly attack people with no other motive than to continue to paint them as bad intruders. At least start planting seeds for them to get unveiled or have insiders etc.

What I don't get about the masked Aces & Eights guys, is why no one pulls their masks off during a match. During the tag match with DOC & a masked member, I counted 6 different times, when the man's mask could be removed. I get it, the big reveals are OMFG and what-not, but it's not like you're going to have another one of those big moments like the Devon reveal, considering some o the guys we know they're planning to put in aces & eights.

This whole thing is dragging way too long. We need some reveals and soon or the whole angle will continue to suffer.

Another thing that I find interesting: having a conversation with a friend of mine who watches TNA maybe twice a year, he asked me if Aries was still champ. I told him that Jeff was champ and his question was: "Why? Jeff's been around forever and he's fucked up more time than anyone can count. Aries was something new and fresh and really worked hard to make you care. Why would they give the belt back to Jeff after everything they did with Aries?"

I think im taking a break from TNA after Impact this week. Just watching it right now is painful. They are not doing anything with James Storm, they've buried AJ Styles to the point where if he turns Heel is anyone going to care,Bully Ray has become a footnote to Brooke Hogan,Aces/Eights I have not cared since the start and they are jobbers to the stars. There's no X-Division or Tag Division for that matter either. The next two weeks are OFN and Championship week where nothing is accomplished at all.

TNA was at least decent back in the Summer,Sacrfice & Destination X were the main highlights.

Lets put this into perspective. Aries is fresh and interesting and works hard to make people care but yet this guy only watches twice a year a still.... Know what I mean? If Aries isn't drawing this guy into getting engaged with the product on what planet does him complaining about Aries not being the champion make sense? Put simply none.

TNA as a whole just isn't an interesting product. Hell, I didn't start watching again until Aries was on his road to the championship. Watching impact this week was the first time i've seen the show since Aries lost the title. The point is, wrestling fans of both the casual and hardcore markets get interested in things that are new and fresh and might stick around to watch a product that's different. When RVD is x-division champ and Hardy is World champ, it makes it harder to care, since we've already been watching those guys do the same thing for well over 10 years now.

I only brought up this discussion with my buddy because he's a religious WWE watcher, but he shows interest in TNA whenever something new and cool is happening. Hardy as champ is not new. Hardy on a "road to redemption" is not new. Aries was different, Aries was a gamble, and Aries was interesting, but now he's just another "cocky heel" and it's not intriguing.

To clarify what I meant about my small break from watching TNA. I may skip the next two weeks but might check out the next 2 Live Impacts of 2013.

How many think 1.3.13 will be Sting?

    Seems highly likely, good call.

But Aries being interesting wasnt enough to interest your friend to watch TNA. Infact he was unaware he had lost the belt so it seems like maybe Aries didn't interest new viewers very much? Maybe as awful as it is to say Jeff Hardy makes them more money? Maybe he can get 10 fans who will love and follow TNA for a whole spending money as opposed to turning off a few hundred who dont even watch regularly. Know what I mean?

from a personal point I of course preferred Aries being champ. Him losing hasn't stopped me watching though. Roode back in the picture appeased me.

I gotta say I was creased this week when Dixie asked AJ "Who are you" like he had turned into some sort of monster, all he did was say he was going to look after himself from now on and considering he has been banned from wrestling for the title for a year, ultimately lost a 16 year running feud with Daniels and was put through that deplorable affair storyline who could blame him.

A bit far with the dramatics I think, at least have him kick a faces head of or something before you start asking questions of his humanity.

Turning Roode would be a mistake, there's no real need for it now and he's rolling fine as he is, plus with the A&8 story still going there's the option of keeping him 'heel' but on the side of the faces if they want to play that way for a while, he still has alot to offer in his current role and position so why waste the effort they put into building him up?

From the main page, interesting little quote from Hogan.

3 Knee surgery I've had eight back surgeries, I've had knee replacements, I've had both hip replacements. I only need one more surgery – to fix my right knee – then I'm going to go for the TNA world title. I want to be 59 years old and be the champion.

I think this will be awesome

In the past 3 months, TNA destroyed the credibility of everyone who had any business holding the title before. Might as well put it on Hogan now. Might pop a rating.

I would accept a Hogan title win if, and only if, 2 major things happened because of it.... a decent rating jump followed by Aries or Roode getting the clean pin over him to take it back.

Well nothing short of the company disappearing for 6 months and coming back with a fake mustache and glasses over their logo to disguise what company it is is going to result in a serious ratings bump.

Maybe they should do a WCW 2000 reboot. Not that they haven't hit the reset button multiple times already.

You want TNA to pull a Bobby Valentine?

At this point, considering the health issues that are way too publicized along side his personal life, for better or worse, logically (how often is that used in pro wrestling) Hogan would make whoever is champ look ridiculously inferior, thereby making the TNA roster look inferior. It's one thing when crazy ass Mick Foley wins your World Title. It's one thing when Vince McMahon wins a title. And hell, it's 1 thing when David Arquette wins your world title. A crazy ass man wins a match against other seasoned veterans. The owner of the company bends his own power for his personal gain. And your most popular guy pushes an actor of (what they hope would be) a box office hit. But a man who can barely walk & can't even take a proper fall winning the world title. Not even the dumbest marks are stupid enough to believe that.

Again, this is all logical. So I fully expect AJ Styles to win the BFG series and face off against Hogan, who should be holding a title from as soon as Lockdown, IMO.

Maybes they could draft Piper, Orndorff and Mr T in and do the long awaited Mania 1 rematch - 30 years in the making.

Kaz's AJ Styles impression was indeed dead on, very entertaining! And Mr. Anderson is the smart muscle D-Von reached out to. I don't think anyone on commentary discussed that which I found odd.
