Could be that they're holding fire because the title would give away something in Infinity War or it could be that the gauntlet arc is wrapped up. Reference is absolutely required as this is the end of the Skywalker arc. There is only so much you can do in a film which is the first of a trilogy. IMO TFA established the new characters and gave us an ending to one of the characters from the original films. Yeah it did the death star thing but apart from that it did what it needed to.

The new trilogy will not be skywalker related according to reports so that might pull you back in.

I loved The Force Awakens even with the retread. I was totally fine as it was a fun movie that got the series back on track and set up a whole bunch of new and interesting characters.

So the new trailer is out and it’s incredible. Looks like the heroes are getting their asses royally kicked. Bearded Cap going toe-to-toe with Thanos. Spider-Man is basically the entire audience watching that meeting between Starlord and Stark. Glad to see Gamora having what looks like a significant role in this film and getting to see her early days. The directors have said Hawkeye is on his own journey in this film. I wonder if that means he’s completely absent until Avengers 4?

avengers 4 wrapped filming. the deal with fox hasnt even gone through. they'd have to rewrite and reshoot massive parts of the script and film to get any fox characters in there, and that's even once the acquisition is final and they're allowed, which will take awhile. they'd have to recast a ton of roles in a short amount of time, and there's no way that casting doesn't get it. they aren't going to completely frankenstein one of the biggest films they've produced on a very small window, just to shove characters in that they cpuld just hold off on and use to kick off the next phase of films once they fully have the rights and can properly produce them. you're off on some wild fantasy shit.

I don’t see them killing any of the big names until it’s absolutely their final film. But it’s possible some will be killed or seemingly erased by Thanos as a cliffhanger and then it’s undone in Avengers 4 - with maybe a big sacrifice needed to do so. I wonder if they stepped back from calling the next one Part 2 because everything isn’t tied up as nicely as usual - the likes of Hawkeye, Ant-Man, the still-to-be-established Captain Marvel and others may need to save the day in the next movie if Thanos ultimately wins.

I can see Loki being at risk and maybe his death sets the tone for the higher stakes throughout, He had his arc nicely wrapped up in Ragnarok and what better way for Thanos to announce himself than to kill Marvel’s previous Big Bad? But even if characters are killed in this one, I think there’s a good chance they can appear again in Avengers 4 in some form or other. The Eye of Agamotto allows for time shenanigans as we’ve already seen in Dr Strange and even the Quantum Realm could come into play somehow.

So Marvel are notorious for their misdirection and CGI’ing things out of trailers. Spidey for Civil War, Thor’s eye/thunder for Ragnarok. In the shot of Thanos/Cap, he only has two infinity stones. What’s the likelihood that at that point he has more, and they’ve CG’d them out? Also I hope that that’s Hulk in the Hulkbuster armour.

so, i really liked it. lots of great action and humor, and i really enjoyed seeing these characters cross paths with others that they never have before or be reunited with ones they hadn't seen in a long time. thanos is a tremendous villain. to say he's the best mcu villain isnt saying much given how easy the bar is to surpass, but it still should be said. josh brolin is absolutely perfect. he's the most powerful being in the entire universe, and he knows it, and brolin nails it in the performance. a cool, understated confidence and always seems in control. i dont think, outside of grunts and yelling during battle cries, brolin raises his voice once. he's a brilliant mind, not above using trickery or emotional manipulation, who has a twisted sense of morality and believes what he's doing is the right thing. they took traits from the two best marvel villains before him, loki and killmonger, and meshed them with ultimate power to create thanos.

i liked how they wrapped up thanos getting the stones. i thought it might come off rushed or convenient given how much he needed to accomplish if they didn't stretch it out to the second film, but they did a great job of incorporating thanos' intelligence and tactical mind into his final sweep. him getting the space stone from the asgardians and then sending his minions to earth for the two there while he goes to collect the reality and soul stones, having already decimated xandar and taken the power stone from the nova corps before the film began. he collects the reality stone and uses it to manipulate and trap gamora, who he already knows is aware of the location of the soul stone thanks to his torturing of nebula when she came to try and kill him. the time stone is brought to him by strange upon convincing from stark, which just leaves the mind stone to either he collected by his people or at least found and fought for until he can get it himself, which he does. not overly convoluted, makes sense within the plot beats for characters and doesn't drag the process out. trying to shoehorn showing him getting the power stone from nova corps into the film would've been useless and too much. given he had nobody actively going after him, it makes all the sense in the world that the first stone he gets would be the easiest and a pushover.

since they're not going to attempt to incorporate thanos' love for lady death as motivation for all this, which is for the best, i think, i dig the messiah complex and bitter, sad past of warped morality and virtue, which allows a lot more to work with. he's maybe mad and deranged for suggesting that half the population of titan be exterminated in order to allow the planet to survive in the face of calamity, but when he watches all of the planet die instead when his fears come true, it ignites a moral ambiguity in his proposed solution. his back and forth when he first meets dr. strange is more a conversation of philosophical differences than it is the good guy telling the evil-personified bad guy all the ways that he's wrong. along the journey he has to sacrifice his daughter, who he truly loves and cares for, and he doesn't make the decision lightly, it clearly weighs on him and his sense of destiny and fate informs the outcome. he loses everybody close to him, and upon snapping his fingers and exterminating half of all life, he knows the price that has been paid, and it upsets him despite, in his mind, knowing it had to be done. all of this makes the final shots of the film, with a battered and beaten thanos, having taken an ax of the gods to the chest, stumbling to take a seat on some planet to watch the sunset and finally rest, much more powerful. that vulnerability is amazing.

the red skull camero on vormir was fantastic.

so they went through and have thanos actually collect all the stones and gain the power of the full gauntlet. i was wondering what they would do once it happened, and i loved how it was handled. i'd completely forgotten about thor, so him leaping in at the end there and driving the ax into thanos' chest, and pushing it in, was a great 'oh shit' moment. a very typical marvel end with a hero making that triumphant last second move that helps to spare from the fate of the total end game of the villain. but in another shocking twist, thanos being the genius that he is, mocks thor for going for his chest and gloating and reveling in his revenge for loki's death instead of just killing him outright, telling him he should have gone for the head before lifting the gauntlet up and snapping his fingers once followed by a quick cut to a vision of thanos alone is some shallow pool. very cool moment.

as for the hero deaths, you obviously have to take a lot of them with a grain of salt. i like that they got rid of a slew of top people, but the fact all but three of them were from thanos snapping his fingers, doesnt give it any kind of emotional impact. i felt a lot worse about gamora's death than i do about spiderman and black panther evaporating into thin air, cause i don't trust for a second that any of that is going to be permanent. but from a story perspective, it's nice that this 'kill half of everything in the universe' thing didn't happen to spare all of the good guys starring in the movie, though it is convenient that all the original avengers got spared. but that probably makes sense, as the second film is truly going to be the finale of those guys who helped build this whole thing up, so it's fitting.

i imagine that loki, gamora and vision are all candidates for staying dead since they were killed before the thanos snap. everyone who vanished after that i feel like will be brought back. i figure it'll either be through some time manipulation or alternate world shit, in which case the three perma-dead people could easily make a come back or it'll end up being an act of 'trading lives.' cap makes a point of nixing destroying vision because they arent into trading lives, and vision echoes the sentiment back when he saves cap during the fight on wakanda after cap told him to flee. so i could see there being a scenario where stark and cap end up trading their lives for the lives of those who were taken.

i'm very excited to see where they go with all this.

Stark is surely going to die in the next film, no? Felt to me like Strange was aplogising, not for the defeat, but for what was going to happen to Stark to reverse it.

As for the film in general, with the Russo's at the helm I was expecting great things, and they delivered. Outstanding in every respect.

Personally I think Tony will live but retire into the ‘Fury’ role, I suspect Cap is going to be the big sacrifice to win the day.

My only complaint really was the start, the whole destruction of Thor’s allies without even a mention disappoint me as there were some great characters created in Ragnarock that I was interested in seeing more of, oh and the lack of any sign of Hawkeye/Antman at all grated even with the shitty excuse.

Loved it though, especially the backstory and character of Thanos, the Gamora arc was well done and they made him relatable and ‘human’ while still a credible monster.

The humour was on point too, for what was potentially such a dark film there were a good number of real laughs and the interplay between the characters was excellent, they really do feel like a close group of friends, the little in jokes and comments really do feel just right, Wong and Doc at the start bickering about sandwich’s and ice cream flavours had me creased.

Thanos had killed "half" of his people which means maybe some of those characters did survive.

Did anybody find it out of character for Thanos to kill everybody but Peter Dinklage's character aboard the weapon making star thingymabob?

They're at pains the entire film to highlight that he's not some kind of megalomaniacal monster, that he does have a moral code and that balance is what he is seeking. So that decision, as tactically sounds as it might be, rubbed against the grain for me.

The characters that disappeared. Most of the "newer" heroes that they're making movies about now (Spider-Man, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, basically all of the Guardians, etc) disappeared whereas the originals (Stark, Cap, Thor, etc) are still there. With sequels in the works for these disappeared characters, I'd have swapped those spots to tease that it could stick and the old guys could have been wiped out, with the new crew having to avenge them.

It's a minor thing but, sitting in the theater, I knew that Black Panther, Spidey, Guardians couldn't stay gone because of sequels. If you tease Cap, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk being wiped out, with no movies in development for them, I'd be more likely to believe that they're actually gone. Especially with the Captain Marvel tease and the Fox deal, I could have totally bought them wiping out the original Avengers.

That said, I obviously don't know what they have planned and have no reason to doubt them, but it's something that I couldn't help but think of.

Just got back from seeing it wow! It was incredible. I can’t wait for Avengers 4. Never have I seen a film with a breakneck pace and that manages to fit in an ensemble of characters so seamlessly that each feel like they contribute something to the narrative. The thing just starts hard and heavy with Thanos ransacking the ship the Asgardians were all on at the end of Ragnarok. I expected to see at least a scene of Thanos entering the ship, but no - first thing you see are Asgardian bodies lying on the floor, Loki held captive, being questioned on the whereabouts of the Tesseract with Thor being unaware that Loki took it before Asgard was destroyed. I liked the fact that they showed Thanos taking hits from the start by Hulk before he got defeated... Thanos wasn't all invincible...usually, in movies, at the start the villain is shown so powerful that they can dispatch the good guy without really taking any hits...that's why I had a lot of problems with Ragnorok...it was inconsistent. With Hela she was shown so powerful at the start, but, at the end of the movie she seemed slightly weaker than what she was hyped up to be. The Russos have a better understanding of tonal balance than most of the other people working at Marvel so they don't ruin key moments with jokes.

This movie was dope. I don't have a bad thing to say about it. My jaw literally dropped no less than 5 times. My favorite Marvel movie by a mile. Thanos was everything I wanted. Can't wait to see it again.

The main problem with this is...

There's several major running plot arcs going on in this two parter

- Captain America & Tony Stark having to reconcile after Civil War
- Thor's quest for vengeance after having everything taken from him in front of his eye
- Thor's friend the rabbit now losing everything like Thor
- Bruce Banner's Hulk Impotence

I'm also now wondering if M'Baku becomes king of Wakanda while Black Panther is dead, and what problems that may cause.



Avengers 4 is likely going to be the last film for a lot of the originals, so I'm of the opinion they should get the most out of them, which it looks like they're doing...

Also, I think we're all missing the most important character death...
