NCAA won't renew EA Sports contract
[UPDATE] Athletics organization decides not to renew licensing contract, EA confirms it will continue to make college football games; first title now in development for next-gen.

[UPDATE 2] EA Sports executive vice president Andrew Wilson has released a statement on the matter, saying the company will continue to develop college football games, but without NCAA names and marks. In addition, Wilson confirmed an all-new college football title is in development for next-generation consoles. His full statement is below.

"By now, most fans will have heard that EA's licensing agreement with the NCAA is set to expire and that we have agreed to part ways. I'm sure gamers are wondering what this means."

"This is simple: EA Sports will continue to develop and publish college football games, but we will no longer include the NCAA names and marks. Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues, and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports."

"We took big creative strides with this year's college game and you’ll see much more in the future. We love college football and look forward to making more games for our fans."

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, ESPN college football insider Brett McMurphy claimed on Twitter that EA Sports will continue to have a college football game after 2014, but it won't be associated with the NCAA.

"EA Sports will still have college football video game beyond 2014, just won't be affiliated w/NCAA," he wrote.

    The original story is below.

The NCAA today announced that it will not renew its contract with EA Sports, making the recently released NCAA Football 14 the final game in the series to feature the NCAA's name and logo.

The previous contract was set to expire June 2014.

"We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games. But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA," the group said in a statement.

The "costs of litigation" line is likely referring to a lawsuit from former UCLA player Ed O'Bannon, who--along with other former players--is suing the NCAA, EA Sports, and the Collegiate Licensing Company over the use of their likenesses.

The NCAA's statement points out that EA Sports could negotiate deals with individual schools, conferences, and bowl committees to keep school names in future games, though the status of NCAA titles is now in question.

An EA representative was not immediately available to comment.

Microsoft reverses Xbox One indie publishing requirements
[UPDATE] Microsoft confirms self-publishing for independent developers will be available on Xbox One; all systems can be used to make games; more details will be shared at Gamescom.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Microsoft confirmed that independent developers will be able to self-publish titles on Xbox One and that every system can be used to make games. More details about the program will be shared at Gamescom next month.

"Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development," Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten said in a statement. "That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox Live. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox Live. We'll have more details on the program and the timeline at Gamescom in August."

Whitten told Kotaku in a new interview that devkit functionality will not be available when the Xbox One launches in November.

    The original story is below.

Sources have told Game Informer that Microsoft is preparing to announce a new policy that will allow independent developers to self-publish titles through Xbox Live.

This would be a reversal of policy for Microsoft, as the company said in May that indie developers would need to obtain a publishing deal from Microsoft or a third-party to release their games through the service.

According to the report, a "cacophony of naysayers" pushed Microsoft to reconsider its position on the matter. The new terms reportedly will allow developers to choose release dates and pricing.

The move would put Microsoft in line with Sony and Nintendo, which have said that they will allow developers to publish their own titles on the PlayStation Network and Nintendo Network, respectively.

If true, the reversal would be the second major policy switch Microsoft has made in recent months. In June, the company reversed some of its most controversial connectivity and secondhand policies.

In addition, Game Informer has learned that Microsoft is "drastically overhauling" its certification process, switching to a model more closely resembling that of iTunes. A 14-day turnaround is targeted for approvals, the site reports, with Microsoft examining games for terms of service violations and bugs instead of "extensive code checking."

On top of this, the publication has been informed that every Xbox One unit can be converted to a debug console, allowing Microsoft to authorize a console ID to play pre-release code.

Microsoft was not immediately available to comment.

Nintendo not accepting Japanese indie developers on Wii U
Japanese indie developers are not able to submit development applications for Wii U.

Independent game developers based in Japan cannot submit applications to develop for the Wii U console, according to a Nintendo form hosted on the 2013 Game Developers Conference (GDC) website.

The form invites potential Wii U developers to complete a questionnaire for an opportunity to be contacted by Nintendo.

However, it states in both Japanese and English, "We are not accepting applications from developers located in Japan at this time."

In a statement issued to CVG, Nintendo clarified its stance on the matter, stating, "The policy in question is the decision of Nintendo's department responsible for licensing activities in each region, and the licensing department of Nintendo is currently not accepting subject applications from individuals in Japan."

Developers located outside of Japan are able to submit applications. No further details regarding Nintendo's future approach to Japanese independent game developers have been made available.

Xbox One designed to be switched on for 10-year period - Report
Microsoft's next-gen console was devised with the intention to be turned on for the entirety of its 10-year lifespan.

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox One console was designed for a 10-year lifespan that would see it switched on for the entire period, Eurogamer has reported.

Citing "inside sources at Microsoft", the article states that the design of the Xbox One was based on a brief that bore the 10-year lifecycle in mind, in which the console would remain switched on.

As a result of the desire for the console to operate continuously for ten years, it would be required to function with adequate heat dissipation. The machine's cooling needs has produced a unit that measures 34x26x8cm and functions "almost silently".

Fan noise would only be noticeable during gaming, when the AMD processor is under duress.

Reducing game load times in the Xbox One are also listed as a key feature which Microsoft is addressing. By retaining "game states in RAM while the unit is inactive", users would allegedly be able to resume playing a game with minimal waiting time upon waking up the console.

Microsoft confirmed earlier this year that the Xbox One will support 3D and 4K, the latter being touted as the next version of high definition. 4K is officially named Ultra HD and aims to replace 1080i/p as the highest-resolution signal available for video content....

Ubisoft will reveal new next-gen IP at Gamescom
Assassin's Creed publisher plans to give first details on an all-new next-generation game at German event this month.

Ubisoft will reveal an all-new next-generation franchise at Gamescom later this month, the French publisher announced today. No further information about this new game was divulged.

It is possible that this tease is referencing Child of Light, the all-new game from Ubisoft creative director Patrick Plourde set to be discussed at GDC Europe in the days before Gamescom.

Gamescom takes place August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany. In addition to the all-new game, Ubisoft's lineup for the show includes Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Rayman Legends, and Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Ubisoft is not the only major publisher making announcements for Gamescom. Blizzard Entertainment will make a "special announcement" during the show, while 2K Games plans to show off all-new XCOM content at the event.

Take-Two hints at Red Dead Redemption 2
CEO Strauss Zelnick says Western has potential to be "permanent" franchise, like James Bond.

During a recent earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick teased a sequel to 2010's critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption, saying he believes the game has the potential to be a "permanent" franchise, similar to the James Bond series.

"It's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example," Zelnick said.

The executive also claimed that Take-Two has a unique approach to building franchises compared to its competitors. In his view, it is smarter to make "permanent" franchises that consumers will continually spend time and money on over the years instead of "making hay while the sun shines."

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises, that's the unique goal in the industry. Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines," Zelnick said. "Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises. Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example."

Red Dead Redemption was released in May 2010 to nearly universal praise. The game was developed primarily by Rockstar San Diego and is a spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, which Rockstar Games purchased from Capcom in 2002 after its cancellation.

If the Red Dead Redemption franchise is to return, it could be one of the multiple next-generation games Take-Two currently has in development. In May, CEO Strauss Zelnick said, "We also have a extraordinary pipeline of titles in development for next-generation platforms, including groundbreaking new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises."

    Cheers for the updates Rick.

I barely played the first hour of Red Dead Redemption. I'm sure it's a good game, but I rarely play meaty single-player campaigns these days. The Last Of Us being around 17 hours long is about my limit.

Perfect example of Take Two is the GTA games - I've only ever finished GTA3. I'm sure 5 will be good, and I'll probably get it way too early, but I'll not finish it.

As for the Xbox One article, maybe I'm getting old, but I always turn my consoles off at the socket at the end of the night.

Left 4 Dead 3 listing spotted during Valve office tour
Members of the Dota 2 subreddit stumble upon a Valve project tracker referencing Left 4 Dead 3 and Source 2.

Left 4 Dead 3 and Source 2 have both been spotted on Valve's internal project tracker, after members of the Dota 2 subreddit were given a tour of the company's Seattle offices.

The picture taken primarily shows updates to Dota 2, but nestled between are references to the Source 2 engine and a L4D3, and Reddit member Cyborgmatt uploaded a zoomed-in graphic to show the applicable entry up close.

The current Source engine made its public debut in 2004 with the launch of Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source, and has subsequently gone on to power Portal, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, and Dota 2.

Valve confirmed in November 2012 that it had been working on a new game engine for "quite a while" but suggested it was waiting on the right game before showing it off.

Left 4 Dead 3 was also reportedly spotted on a Valve project tracker in June.

Left 4 Dead 2 was originally released for PC and Xbox 360 in 2009, and has since been ported to Mac and Linux.

Sony releasing PlayStation 4/Vita bundle for $500 - Report
Well-placed, anonymous source alleges Sony may be preparing to bundle its struggling handheld with its upcoming home console.

Sony may be readying a hardware bundle that includes a PlayStation Vita handheld with its upcoming PS4, according to a report by Machinima (via VideoGamer.com).

According to "a well-placed, anonymous source," the package will reportedly go on sale before the end of 2013, and will retail for around $500. No additional details were made available. With the Vita currently retailing for $250 as a standalone device, and the standard edition of the PlayStation 4 priced at $399, a $500 pack would represent a significant saving for consumers.

Sony previously announced that all PlayStation 4 games will be playable on the company's handheld via Remote Play, though only games that have been "specifically programmed to allow such use of PS Vita" will be able to use the handheld as a controller for the home console.

GameSpot contacted Sony Computer Entertainment seeking confirmation of the rumour, but a spokesperson was unavailable at the time of publication.

I really don't want to see consoles start to hop on the 4K bandwagon. HD is nice, but it's ludicrously expensive to produce high quality graphics already. Upping the resolution by such a huge factor seems like it will just make games cost stupid amounts to make and take even more resources away from the actual gameplay.

It's a gimmick, Mike. It's just about being able to say that they can do it. PS3 games hardly ever output at 1080 I don't think there's any danger that people will be developing 4k any time soon.

Increasing the output resolution itself doesn't make much of a difference. It's more an inherent quality of the graphics hardware that you're using, and the 360/PS3 stuff just wasn't up to dealing with a lot at 1080. You could run the same games through better hardware and make them look a hell of a lot better without any extra work. If you look at the screenshots for the Dolphin Wii/Gamecube PC emulator, people are able to increase the resolution of Gamecube stuff and make it look ten times better just through the built in capabilities of the GPU.

I don't think they'll go for natural output at 4K this generation as it'll still be far too edge case and they'll just do a hardware upscale like they currently do to get some games to manage even 720p.

All PS Vitas $199 at Target August 18-24 - Report
Leaked advertisement from retailer Target states both versions of Sony's portable getting price cut later this month.

All PlayStation Vita systems will be marked down to $199 at Target beginning August 18 and running through August 24, according to a leaked Target advertisement obtained by Blu-ray Forums.

The ad specifies that "all PS Vita game systems" will be marked down. The handhelds currently retail for $250 for the Wi-Fi version and $300 for the 3G model.

Neither Sony nor Target were immediately available to comment.

The PS Vita received a price cut in Japan in February, but Sony said in February that no such price drop would be extended to North America due to exchange rates and other factors.

Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said at the time.

    Xbox One unboxed
Microsoft unwraps Day One Edition featuring 853mhz GPU; chat headset, 4K HDMI cable included with all units.

Microsoft today posted an unboxing video for the Xbox One, three months before the next-generation console arrives on store shelves this November.

The console shown in the video is one of the first production units, Microsoft said, adding that fewer than 20 exist in the world. The system features the new 853mhz GPU announced last week.

The unboxing video, available below, is for a Day One Edition of the system, including a special Day One package, a uniquely branded controller with chrome D-pad, and a Day One digital achievement.

As was previously announced, the Xbox One itself sports a 500GB hard drive, slot load Blu-ray drive, IR blaster port, HDMI input and output connectors, a S/PDIF interface, three USB 3.0 ports, wired and wireless network support, and a Kensington Security Slot.

Microsoft also discussed the Xbox One's new chat headset. Previously, it was announced that it would not be included with the standard system. However, this has now changed and every unit will include a headset.

The chat headset offers "3x the sampling rate of the Xbox 360," Microsoft said. It is also described as "super lightweight"--weighing in at 44 grams. The headset also features a padded earpiece that can be worn on the left or right year, as well as a rotating mic.

Xbox One director of product planning Albert Penello added that the HDMI cable included with the system is a Category 2 HDMI cable and is rated for 1080p, 3D, and 4K. As for the system's built-in wireless, it is A/B/G/N and supports dual-band 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequencies, compared to the Xbox 360's single-band A/B/G/N at 2.4ghz.

Xbox Live Gold Family Pack is Changing on August 27
Everyone affected gets three months of Gold for free.

Today Microsoft revealed that it will dissolve its existing Xbox Live Gold Family Pack on August 27, 2013. Accounts linked to a Family Pack will convert into individual accounts "to prepare for new upcoming features on Xbox Live Gold."

Here's what that means for you.

Microsoft confirmed to IGN that each member of the Family Pack will keep the full membership term -- so if you had 10 months left, everyone in the Family Pack gets 10 months on their individual profiles.

In addition, anyone affected by the change here will receive three extra months of Xbox Live Gold. Activity monitoring reports and Microsoft Points allowances are going away, but those are the only Family Pack features you won't have access to as of August 27.

"Before your memberships convert, you can still add family members to your Xbox Live Gold Family Pack, for a total of up to four accounts," a Microsoft email notification says. "However, any unassigned secondary accounts will no longer be accessible after your conversion. Please be sure to update your secondary accounts here."

Unfortunately, this means families with numerous Xbox 360 consoles in their home will need to pay for separate Gold memberships starting later this month, as opposed to the cheaper bundled price of the Family Pack. The alternative is to take advantage of Xbox One's new Home Gold features.

In addition to reversing its used game DRM policies for Xbox One, Microsoft has revealed that the console will no longer require Kinect to function. In our latest Ask Microsoft Anything, Xbox Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten revealed that Xbox One owners will be able to use all of the console's core functions regardless of whether the new Kinect sensor is connected. Naturally, many of the tentpole features of the new Kinect, such as player identification, voice commands, etc., will be disabled as a result, but players will still be able to play games and access entertainment content.

The news represents yet another significant revision to the company's next-gen strategy. Shortly after E3 in June, Microsoft announced that it had revised its plans to restrict used games and require a constant online connection in order for the Xbox One to function following backlash from the fan community. What remained unclear, however, was whether owners would still be obligated to have the Kinect sensor connected and, perhaps more importantly, what would happen if the peripheral became damaged or ceased to function.

Most importantly, Microsoft's decision to abandon mandatory Kinect connectivity opens the doors for a cheaper, Kinect-free version of the system.
So the XBONE has reversed everything people hated and now can even come in potentially at the same price point as the PS4. I don't know if I've ever seen a major company change their mind to fit the public as much as Microsoft has. Personally I think it's a good thing. It is now completely a feasible option for next-gen. Damn them for making me have to choose again

Well Kinect is still going to be bundled with every console and I don't see that changing for the foreseeable future. By forcing it to be sold with every new Xbox they're guaranteeing an install base so that developers can make games with Kinect features in mind. To me this news doesn't change much since the price will stay the same and the Kinect sensor itself doesn't bother me since I'm not paranoid as half the gaming community seem to be. Why would Microsoft care about what I was talking about in my living room?

Microsoft promises "exciting news" at Gamescom next week
Microsoft will be giving away an Xbox One every hour during the German trade show.

Microsoft has publicly detailed its plans for Gamescom next week, with the Xbox One maker promising "exciting news" from the company.

As confirmed yesterday, Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer will open the German gaming trade show on August 21 with a keynote talk on next-generation gaming. He'll be joined by Cologne mayor Jürgen Roters and German federal minister for economy and technology Philipp Rösler.

Ahead of the event's formal opening, Microsoft adds that it will run its own showcase event on Tuesday 20. "We’re placing our focus on the games," said Microsoft in a statement. GameSpot will be in attendance.

"More people than ever before will have the opportunity to play Xbox One games and the team will be welcoming them with open arms," added Microsoft.

Games confirmed to be at Microsoft's booth include Forza Motorsport 5, Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome, Project Spark, Killer Instinct, and Zoo Tycoon.

Additionally, Microsoft adds that it will be running a competition at its public Xbox booth, giving away an Xbox One console every hour.

Microsoft is returning to Gamescom this year after skipping the trade show in 2012.

Microsoft outlines Xbox One indie dev program
Applications now open for Independent Developers @ Xbox program; priority given to established developers; no fees whatsoever.

Today at Gamescom 2013 Microsoft announced the Independent Developers @ Xbox program, the company's all-new policy that will allow any developer to self-publish on Xbox One.

The announcement comes after Microsoft reversed its stance on independent publishing policies last month, confirming that all studios can self-publish on Xbox One.

Today's announcement details the program at length and provides a vision for where it will head in the future.

On Xbox One, all games will be housed together. Gone is the "Indie" section from Xbox 360. Microsoft claims, though, that games won't get lost in a sea of content thanks to greater discoverability through "rich search programs." Editor's Picks and Trending sections will highlight certain games.

"All games are treated equally [on Xbox One]," Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten told GameSpot. "It's not like 'Oh, I have to go to the Indie section.'"

Every developer accepted into the program will receive two development kits at no cost. Whitten said additional kits can be purchased, but he declined to discuss pricing information.

All independent developers will have access to the same benefits developers have today, including the "full power" of the console, as well as cloud services, Kinect, and features like SmartGlass, multiplayer, achievements, and Gamerscore.

Leading the Independent Developers @ Xbox program as director will be Chris Charla, who previously held the title of XBLA portfolio director at Microsoft. He will oversee the program and work with developers as well as a staff of community managers.

"He loves games; the people and the space," Whitten said.

Applications for the Independent Developers @ Xbox program are being accepted beginning today at www.xbox.com/id. Acceptance into the program will be granted with priority to "qualified" developers with a "proven track record" of shipping games for console, PC, or mobile.

According to Whitten, a "qualified" developer is defined as an outfit that has "established themselves in the indie community" and have "made great games" and have "exciting ideas."

No application or membership fees will be charged and there will be no extra costs for game certification or title updates. Microsoft stopped charging fees for patches and updates on the Xbox 360 earlier this year.

The initial phase of the program will launch this fall.

Looking ahead, Microsoft reiterated its long-term goal is to enable every Xbox One console to be used as a development kit, though Whitten declined to say when this might happen. "Our focus right now is more on the people that have experience because we're learning at the same time," he said.

Regarding the revenue share Microsoft will have in place for independent Xbox One developers, Whitten said "it's the industry standard. It's not different for this set of creators than other creators on the platform."

Overall, Microsoft's new Xbox One independent policy will be shaped by the developers it serves, Whitten said. "I think that's critical," Whitten said about changing and evolving the program over time based on feedback.

"I don't think there's any other thing we can do."

Sony reveals PS3 to PS4 upgrade program
Gamers who buy PS3 titles will be able to purchase digital copy of PS4 version for a "significantly discounted" price.

Sony announced a new PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 upgrade program during its Gamescom media briefing today.

As part of the promotion, gamers who buy Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts, or Watch Dogs on PS3 can purchase a digital version for PS4 at a "significantly discounted price" when it launches.

Electronic Arts, Activision, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros. are all participating in the program. The promotion will be available for a limited time, Sony said, and it is not clear if the program will be offered worldwide.

Retailers Amazon and GameStop have launched similar promotions where gamers can trade up to the next-generation version for $10.

The PS4 launches November 15 in North America and November 29 in Europe. The next-generation console will be available in 32 countries in all by the end of the year.

The Xbox One releases in November for $500. A specific launch date has not been announced.

Sony confirms North American launch date for next-generation console; will come to Europe November 29 and be available in 32 countries this year; more than 1 million consoles preordered.

During its Gamescom 2013 briefing today, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 will launch in North America on November 15. A European launch will follow on November 29. In total, the console will be available in 32 countries this year.

The next-generation platform will be available for $399 in North America, €399 in Europe, and Ł349 in the United Kingdom. More than 1 million consoles have been preordered worldwide, Sony added.

Sony also announced today that a 14-day PlayStation Plus subscription will be included with all PS4 systems.

Amazon launches Xbox One upgrade offer
Online retailer reveals "Up Your Game" promotion allowing players to upgrade select Xbox 360 games to Xbox One version for $10.

Online retailer Amazon has launched an Xbox 360 to Xbox One upgrade promotion called "Up Your Game," allowing gamers to pick up the next-generation version of select games for $10.

Until December 31, 2013, gamers can trade in a select Xbox 360 game and receive a $25 bonus credit toward the same title on Xbox One, in addition to the trade-in value of $25.

Participating titles include Madden NFL 25, Call of Duty: Ghosts, and Battlefield 4. Check out the special landing page for more games eligible for the promotion.

The program only applies to Xbox 360 titles traded in for the Xbox One version, not PlayStation 3 to Xbox One or Xbox 360 to PlayStation 4.

GameStop announced a similar offer last week.

    PlayStation Vita gets price cut
Sony's portable will be $199/€199 beginning tomorrow; "significant" price cuts also coming for memory cards; Fez, Borderlands 2 confirmed for system.

The PlayStation Vita is getting a price cut.

Today during Sony's Gamescom 2013 media briefing, the company announced that the portable will be available for $199/€199 beginning tomorrow.

In addition, Sony's European CEO Jim Ryan said memory cards will see "significant" price reductions, though he did not reveal specific pricing information.

The price cut is in place for both the Wi-Fi and 3G PS Vita systems. The price drop was first implemented in Japan in February.

Also during Sony's presentation, the company confirmed that Polytron's Fez and Gearbox Software's Borderlands 2 will release on the PS Vita. In addition, Starbound, Velocity 2X, Murasaki Baby, and music simulator BigFest are coming to the platform.

Microsoft boosting Xbox One CPU, console now in full production
Microsoft to raise Xbox One CPU 150MHz to 1.75GHz; system represents company's largest ever launch.

Microsoft has revealed a hardware revision to its Xbox One CPU; the system is now in full production ahead of its November launch.

Announced by Xbox chief marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi at the Citi Global Technology Conference currently being held in New York, and reported by GeekWire, Mehdi confirmed that the Xbox One's CPU has been boosted a further 150MHz, raising it from 1.6GHz to 1.75GHz.

Last month, Microsoft corporate vice president Marc Whitten announced that the company would be raising the system's GPU clock speed from 800MHz to 853MHz following earlier conservative estimates of the system's capabilities.

Though Medhi declined to narrow down the vague November shipping window for the Xbox One, the executive did say that the machine represents the company's largest projected launch to date. "This will be the biggest launch we've ever done by a wide margin in terms of units shipped at launch," he said.

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb recently defended claims that the Xbox One was rushed to match Sony's PlayStation 4. The Xbox One will launch this November for $499/€499/Ł429/A$599.

Mario Kart 8 surpasses 2 million units sold worldwide

Sales of Mario Kart 8, the latest entry in Nintendo's kart racing franchise, hit about 2 million copies worldwide since its release a month ago, Nintendo of America confirmed with Polygon today.

The number, which Nintendo officials said it sold through to consumers, was revealed during the company's 74th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders in Japan early today.

The title became the fastest selling Wii U game in the console's history when it sold more than 1.2 million copies worldwide since its release May 29 in Japan and May 30 in North America and Europe, Nintendo revealed in early June.

Mario Kart 8 also garnered the "strongest review scores in franchise history," according to the company. While Mario Kart 8's performance is strong, it still may be one of the worst-selling titles in the franchise's history, which you can read more about in our analysis piece on the Mario Kart series.

GameStop's Preorder Plans Sound Like Bad News

Of all the things wrong with big, blockbuster video games, few are as shitty as the obsession with preordering. So you'll be just thrilled to know that GameStop's plans for the future of the practice are, should they ever come to fruition, pretty much a nightmare scenario.

According to a report on GamesBeat, the retail giant recently met with investment company R.W. Baird to talk about the company's future, and one of Baird's analysts has revealed some of the things that they spoke about.

"[GamesStop] indicated that software publishers are more enthusiastic about partnering with it," Baird's Colin Sebastian wrote. "For example, by offering exclusive content on each major game release, and longer term, future models may include GameStop offering exclusive gameplay."

GamesBeat asked him to clarify what exactly that "future model" meant, and Sebastian added the retailer is thinking about "getting involved at the time of game development where there could be some content exclusive to [the retailer] included in the game."

So if you thought it was stupid that peripheral content like skins and maps was split up between retailers, just wait until GameStop can offer actual parts of a game you can't get anywhere else. Then wait for Walmart and Best Buy and Amazon to catch on. It'll be great.

We've contacted GameStop for comment, and will update if we hear back.

Resident Evil 1 (Remake) Remastered for PC, blah blah, etc in 2015

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...0-and-xbox-one

I look at it this way, even though on paper, this is an obvious hope of cashgrab for Capcom. I'll look to the positive.

Ever since Resident Evil 5, really RE4 in a way. The fans (me included) have bitched and moaned about the change in style of gameplay to accommodate a more casual, COD crowd.

With this, I get the sense that Capcom is testing the waters to see if the fans really do want more of the oldschool style. If the game doesn't return a good profit, they will say no to the much more wanted remakes of RE2, RE3, Outbreak, etc. If the game sells well...say good bye to the COD style Resident Evil games for at least 3-5 years since it will take a while to redo the other games from the ground up.

Given how RE6 didn't do as well as RE5 or RE4. I see this as a test to see where the fans really want things to go.

Hopefully this goes somewhere, for fans of the series anyway who want it to go that way.

I mean, they're just releasing a remake that they did in 2003(?) And I got the impression that was made in the first place just to fulfil their obligation to make 5 Gamecube games. Capcom isn't in a position to make anything creatively at the moment. They seem to be rudderless.

I will probably pick this one up. Loved the original back in 1996. First game that scared the shit out of me. Maybe Doom did at times too.

I play the shit out of Mercernaries mode in RE5 but I have to agree that the evolution of the game has been a bit weak. RE6 isn't a terrible game but I'm not a fan of the controls and the graphics seem compressed, like you need a 100 inch t.v. to play the game without losing imagery. The Call of Duty style game, Operation Raccoon City, that's fun when you're playing people online but it gets a little old. I really didn't get into the game until RE3, which is when it started turning more into a shooter than a mix bag of puzzle, shooter, horror.

Why remake Resident Evil again!? The Game Cube version is fucking flawless and 2,3, Code Veronica haven't been updated yet. Stupid people.

I wasn't a huge fan of RE6, the series just got a bit goofy at that point and I'm not a fan of the co-op.

It's nice for those of us that don't own the GC though.

Can't say I really liked RE5 or RE6, me and my gaming buddy will try any co-op games though, not too many good ones around. I have only played about halfway through Veronica X but I remember really enjoying it, maybe I should hook up my old PS2 and play it again..

GC's are cheap. My point was more that I would really like a remake of 2,3, Nemesis and Code Veronica (with the difficulty turned down. Seriously 6 bullets, 8 zombies is bullshit)

    True.

They could release it for the Virtual Consoles though and that would give them money.

I had some serious trouble with that dude in Veronica X that had tentacles or long arms or whatever the fuck it was. You could only hurt him when his heart was exposed I believe, and you only had a couple of bullets in the rifle (with the scope) to get it done. Never made it past him.. I'll get him some day though.

But that's what they're doing? They're not remaking it, they're just polishing the GC remake, no creative work. Doing anything else would take effort and they sound like they're not committed to anything.

What annoys me is how these companies never just implement backwards compatibility with emulation that's capable of outputting at 1080p.

Here's a video of Resident Evil running in full HD on a PC. Bare in mind that you were able to do this years ago on older PCs.

And here's a pic of Link from Smash Bros Brawl on Wii. Wii console on the left at its native resolution, then 1080p on the right which is on par with the upcoming Wii U release. Of course with something like Smash Bros you kind of lose some of the appeal for the next game, but something like Resident Evil or maybe some older RPGs could really do with the refresh via emulation rather than having to wait for the developers to "remaster" them.

Here we are talking about a remaster of a remake, when really we should've been able to just stick our Gamecube copy of the game into the Wii U to play this.

Well, who is to blame there? Nintendo would have to continue supporting a system that was over a decade old. You got full gamecube support with the Wii as it was, and probably only a tiny percentage of the Wii userbase actually used that. Another 6 years on, it's going to be miniscule numbers using GC functionality in the Wii U. If you're supporting people putting their Gamecube games in, there's no way for Nintendo to make money off that any more, and you have to charge hundreds of people extra for the one person that's actually going to use that feature.

Capcom is bringing the game to PS3, 4, Xbox 360 and One. They're in a load of trouble and have never been shy of a cashgrab. Boasting about making it HD is really a misdirection. They're not 'making it HD', they are just literally porting it to those consoles so it's WOW HIGH DEFINITION just like every single piece of native software on those systems.

You're missing the point. I'm talking about backwards compatibility that we already have but could be bumped up to full HD. For example, you could already play PSX games on the PS3. I just dont get why you couldn't in HD when the console could probably do it. Especially when they could remaster a PS2 game (Final Fantasy X) on the PS3.
Same with the the Smash Bros example above. You can already play Wii games on the Wii U, but they wont be played in 1080p that the Wii U is capable of.

I'm not asking for a console to play a game it can't already. Playing the Gamecube Resident Evil on Wii U would be nice, but I was only saying that for the sake of the topic at hand.

but the rogerererererererererererer's point still stands. they won't do that because it allows for situations ("cash grabs") like this.

The PS1 emulation was done by using actual PS1 hardware, and the same was the case for PS2 stuff on the PS3, but even struggled when it had hardware devoted to it. The Wii was built on Gamecube hardware. The reason you get backwards compatibility is because it's a minimal effort thing where they're able to put in something as it was.

I believe the Wii U has the same thing of a Wii GPU chip in there. It's a known quantity that they can bung in and forget about. To get Wii stuff working in 1080p on the Wii U, they'd have to re-engineer the Wii and then integrate that new thing into the Wii U, as well as guaranteeing support for this new system, testing all the games and having to patch it in. All this would be done at a cost that's hard for them to recapture because people will be using their old collection or getting second hand discs. As I said, it could make money, but it would increase the cost of the console for everybody and most people wouldn't use it.

The Dolphin has the freedom to be done as a long term project that you can throw big hardware at, and brute force through a lot of stuff. I appreciate the thought of backwards compatibility, but it's just not feasible. These systems are mass produced and have to be as efficient as possible to meet the margins, and they often use proprietary software or particular tricks to get around their limitations that are difficult to reproduce. I think the problem with Xbox 1(the first one) emulation on 360 was the nVidia libraries, IIRC.

I am not trying to pull an "It's all about the profit, son" move as I understand it would be cool, but I see that backwards compatibility has too many obstacles, and PC emulators have a freedom that the companies don't.

A bunch of MS-DOS games (including Oregon Trail) are now available online:

i finished episode 1 and went through episode 2 yesterday.

    episode 1:

for some reason the 'my choices' section and the other player stats thing isn't showing up on my game, and i think some of my choices weren't reflected into episode 2.

    episode 2:

the performance of the tell tale games i think has always been a bit buggy and laggy, but it became a complete hinderance multiple times during the first two episodes, where the game would momentarily freeze and lag during a scene where i have to follow button and stick prompts, therefore making me miss the timing and suddenly jumping back to current time and seeing me being killed in some way.

Haven't run into any glitches or lag playing on the PS4. There's some pixelation / cloudiness in some parts of the animation but I noticed that in TWD series as well.

I'm playing on the 360, and this shit is almost unbearably broken. For something that essentially has no gameplay, and is more or less a "choose your own adventure" movie, this shit is unforgivable. I like these type of games, and I love GoT, but it's embarrassingly bad. It freezes, skips shit, plays some shit multiple times, fucks up timing. They've been making these games for years, you'd think they could figure out how to fucking code this shit already.

im playing on the xbox one. maybe its just the microsoft systems having these issues? i totally forgot about the stuttuering/repeating dialogue at times. it sucks, cause i had no issues whatsoever with the first season of TWD on my 360. i bought season 2 of TWD for the one when it was on sale around christmas but havent started it yet, so im hoping these things arent prevalent there, too.

I'm playing GoT on Steam and the only issue I've had is one time it cut off the audio of a line half-way through a sentence. I wonder if it really is an issue with the Microsoft consoles.

EA Shuts Down SimCity Developer Maxis
    Kotaku article link: http://kotaku.com/ea-shuts-down-simc...xis-1689454903
    By: Jason Schreier 3-4-15 3:03pm

EA Shuts Down SimCity Developer Maxis

EA has shut down Maxis Emeryville, the main Maxis studio and longrunning developer behind SimCity and Spore, among other games. Though the Maxis brand will carry on, the studio that most people knew as "Maxis" is no more.

"Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location," an EA representative said in a statement.5

The news comes smack in the middle of the Game Developers Conference, where developers from across the world are congregating in San Francisco for various meetups, lectures, and sessions. It's poor timing, to say the least.

I've been hearing rumblings about a shake-up at Maxis for a few days now, but official word first came this afternoon from former Maxis designer Guillaume Pierre, who wrote on Twitter this afternoon that the studio would be shutting down:

Well it was a fun 12 years, but it's time to turn off the lights and put the key under the door. #RIPMaxisEmeryville
Later in the afternoon, EA confirmed plans to shut down Maxis Emeryville, sending over the following statement

Today we are consolidating Maxis IP development to our studios in Redwood Shores, Salt Lake City, Helsinki and Melbourne locations as we close our Emeryville location. Maxis continues to support and develop new experiences for current Sims and SimCity players, while expanding our franchises to new platforms and developing new cross-platform IP.

These changes do not impact our plans for The Sims. Players will continue to see rich new experiences in The Sims 4, with our first expansion pack coming soon along with a full slate of additional updates and content in the pipeline.

All employees impacted by the changes today will be given opportunities to explore other positions within the Maxis studios and throughout EA. For those that are leaving the company, we are working to ensure the best possible transition with separation packages and career assistance.
Originally founded in 1987, Maxis was best known for the Sim franchise, which began with Will Wright's SimCity and expanded to include a number of other games, including the popular The Sims series, which is handled by a separate developer called The Sims Studio.

In 2013, Maxis released an online reboot of SimCity that was plagued with all sorts of problems, which may have been what led to this final closure. Neither SimCity nor the recent release of The Sims 4 performed very well, according to a person familiar with goings-on at the studio.

Valve reveals Source 2, free to all developers
    GamesIndustry article link: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...all-developers
By: Dan Pearson WED 04 MAR 2015 8:03AM GMT

Valve reveals Source 2, free to all developers
Also shows off Steam Link, VR, Steam Machines and controller

Thirteen years after the release of the original Source, which gave rise to Half-Life 2, Portal, Garry's Mod, DOTA 2 and Titanfall, Valve has finally announced Source 2 - as well as the fact that it will be completely free.

"The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity," said Valve's Jay Stelly. "Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favourite games. We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers. This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PCs dominance as the premiere content authoring platform."

As well as being free, Source 2 will also support the Vulkan graphical API.

Given that Half-Life 2 was a launch title for the original Source, speculation is naturally rife that the long-awaited Half-Life 3 will be announced soon, but don't hold your breath on that one - Valve is also busy with a few more announcements. First up was Steam Link - a streaming device which connects to TVs via HDMI and streams PC content at 1080p, 60fps. Operating via ethernet cable from the local network, Link should deliver a low-latency streaming experience which will be the natural evolution of Steam's existing big screen mode. Link will cost $49.99. Compatible with Link will be the company's forthcoming Steam controllers, which were also priced at $49.99 for the US.

On the VR front, Valve spoke briefly about its partnership with HTC, working on the Vive headset, but also announced an accompanying technologies: a tracking system called Lighthouse which will be integrated into Valve's headset.

"In order to have a high quality VR experience, you need high resolution, high speed tracking," said Valve's Alan Yates. "Lighthouse gives us the ability to do this for an arbitrary number of targets at a low enough BOM cost that it can be incorporated into TVs, monitors, headsets, input devices, or mobile devices."

the Lighthouse technology, which may have been the small sensors which were embedded in the front of the Vive mock-ups shown earlier this week, will be freely shared with any hardware manufacturer which wishes to use it.

Lastly, there was more news on Steam Machines. New units from Alienware and Falcon Northwest are on display, with half a dozen more expected soon.

"We continue to see very strong growth in PC Gaming, with Steam growing 50% in the last 12 months," said Gabe Newell. "With these announcements we hope that we are helping build on that momentum."

That's a shame to see Maxis go, they created some monumental games in their various guises. Sim City 4 and The Sims 2 are still fantastic fun today. I guess this is what EA does though.

Aren't you just a bluetooth keyboard?

I believe that it is actually a speccy but one which gets the game files through bluetooth from the paired tablet as opposed to cassette. I don't think its an emulator.

Nintendo NX Specs and Release Date Update: New Console Likely To Launch This July

Rumors are claiming that the Nintendo NX, the next generation console of Ninntendo, is set for a July 2016 release and that its specifications would allow it to be at par with its competition in the video game industry, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One.

In a report, DigiTimes stated that Nintendo has requested supply chain partners to begin pilot production of the Nintendo NX by October. The publication added that Nintendo is looking to sell 20 million units within the first year of the console.

Reports by Forbes however, say that the rumors are unlikely to be true. With Nintendo previously stating that no information regarding the Nintendo NX will be revealed till next year, it seems that the timeframe between a January 2016 reveal and July 2016 release is too short. Also, new consoles are normally released in the fall before the shopping-heavy holiday season.

The successor of the very successful Wii; the Wii U is currently struggling in the market but it is unlikely that Nintendo will pull the plug on the console in just a four-year run from 2012 to 2016. In addition, the 20 million units predicted by Nintendo for the console’s first year is too high considering the sales for the Wii U has not reached 10 million units over its lifespan.

According to Forbes, the Nintendo NX is more likely to be released in 2017. Nintendo fans are hoping that the specs of the upcoming console could make it on par or, even be better that that of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. However, it is unlikely for Nintendo to create a powerful device as it aims to be on equal footing with its competitors to give it a better chance in the market, but that is of course until both Sony and Microsoft release their new next generation consoles.

Another issue that the Nintendo NX is facing is the deterioration of the relationship between Nintendo and its third-party game publishers. Many game publishers have cut ties with Nintendo after the sales of the Wii U. This could result in limited games for Nintendo’s next console.

Yea, but they gotta do something. The WiiU is just dying a slow death. When your looking fondly at GameCube sales, it's rough.

The news regarding Street Fighter 5's business model is, frankly, outstanding.

Rarely can I recall a company listening to the concerns of its customers and coming up with a fair proposal which still gives them the opportunity to make shed loads of cash.

There's no way the NX is coming next July. It will be formally announced then, but that's it. Why write a headline that is actively contradicted by the article itself?

I wouldn't be surprised though if it's like LoL or SMITE where earning the currency for the characters is possible, it's just going to take you a helluva long time to do so.

GOG.com is running a big sale right now, including a cute 'pinata' gimmick where you pay $3 and get a random indie game of random value. I took a punt and got Gods Will Be Watching: Special Edition. I'll give that a whirl later.

Hideo Kojima and Sony Partner For New PlayStation-Exclusive Game

Hideo Kojima and Sony Partner For New PlayStation-Exclusive Game

Following rumors that Kojima was forming a new studio, a video was posted to the PlayStation YouTube account that confirmed the Metal Gear Solid creator's next move. The video features President of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House announcing "a new partnership with one of the most celebrated game developers in history."

Hideo Kojima will be working alongside Sony in the creation of his new game and says that he's "thrilled to embark on creating a new franchise." Kojima revealed in a tweet today that his contract with Konami has ended. He said he's "committed to be involved in creative activities for as long as [he lives]."

Kojima's new studio is called Kojima Productions, which was the name of his studio while he worked for Konami. No news has been revealed about his future game, other than a tweet from Geoff Keighley, which announced it will be a console exclusive to PlayStation.

This follows months of news about Kojima's status with his ex-employer Konami. Keighley revealed at The Game Awards that lawyers were keeping Kojima from attending the show, at which his game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain won Best Score/Soundtrack and Best Action/Adventure game. And when it was reported that he had left the company back in November, Konami denied the claims, saying he was on vacation.

Pretty big news! I am hoping that the new project can be Silent Hills with a different name to avoid the copyright issues. The P.T. demo was so unique and interesting, it would be great to see Kojima's vision fully realised.

Wasn't sure where to throw this, so here it is.

    I know its Alpha.

But im fucking hyped. Can't wait to see how this plays out. A potential proper Friday the 13th game. A long time in the making. With what looks like actual soul since they have the license for the series and got a lot of alumni to work on it. From Kane Hodder to Tom Savini to original composer Harry Manfredini to Sean Cunningham, whom I don't like but still. With the potential for singleplayer, maps from all the films, etc. This could be a real gem.

The hype is real, for me anyway.

This seems a lot like those games like Outlast, in the sense that (besides the obvious gameplay comparison) there's a cool video game concept but just feels like it could do with a larger game developer producing it, just to make the visual presentation a whole lot better.
Personally I think it looks too "indie".

You can play as Jason or the counselors. The counselors all have their strengths and weaknesses. Its multiplayer so far, but singleplayer is a possibility.

Some gameplay concept videos, not actual gameplay, but the 'rules'. Everything from different escapes to traps to 80s horror cliches as a gameplay mechanic, etc.

Nintendo's new console code named NX is coming out March 2017.

Info on the new Call of Duty supposedly leaked and its going to be called Call of Duty: Infinite War. Also mentioned was Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered which has me pumped if true.

It kinda makes sense. Memory sticks are able to hold more and more data every day. They load faster, and are generally more reliable. Plus, Nintendo wouldn't have to shell out licensing costs for optical drives like they do now. Instead, they could be the one with the proprietary tech that companies want/need to use.

I've seen 128gb SD cards going for under Ł30 these days, so now's a good time to go back to cartridges with flash memory. Plus the great thing is that like you said, reading data off of it is a whole lot faster than off optical discs, which means you'd no longer need a console where you'd have to install games like you do today. And, we could maybe go back to SRAM save files on the cartridges.

Even if the games are just little memory sticks, Nintendo could repurpose the old NES and SNES cartridges as cases for the games. It would look so sweet on the shelf/entertainment center/where ever the fuck you put it.

Not that I really want something as big and bulky as a NES/SNES cartridge, a Genesis one would probably be ideal, but as long as they understand why N64 cartridges suck and we'll all be cool.

No no no no no sir. I cut my teeth on Colecovision and at that time I was a gamer. I played Atari 2600, and was still a gamer. The family got the NES Worldclass track meet pack. I was still a gamer. After I get my Super Nintendo, SEGA puts out this commercial.

SEGA does what Nintendon't. I went to school, and gamers had be split. SEGA started a fanboy war. Too many an argument over which system was better. Too many an argument of what was the better console manufacturer. Well much like the South loosing the war, SEGA lost the console war. Sega fans get to continually wave their flags, and act like their company didn't fucking brutally lose the war. SEGA did what Ninten-hasn't, they lost.

The Genesis/SNES war. Now there was a console war. Neck and neck for pretty much the entire generation. Sega had the more powerful console but Nintendo had its first party line up of games. Sega had its classic 16 bit sports titles and Nintendo had rpgs out the ass. A good time to be a gamer.

I've decided to get the NX when it comes out. I've never, ever owned a Nintendo and hopefully they have some form of the virtual console so that I can go back and play some classics that I've missed out on.

They didn't lose the console war between mega drive and snes though did they? They went under in a console sense because the follow up Saturn and Dreamcast were garbage save a few decent games.

Why have you decided so early when so little is known? Especially as someone who has never owned a Nintendo console before you may want to wait a while after launch to make sure it won't be another Wii U like disaster. The only thing known about it so far is that the new Zelda will be out for it along with a bunch of rumour and speculation. The fact Nintendo aren't talking about the NX until after E3 doesn't bode too well either.

Isn't Nintendo always weird when it comes to (not) showing stuff at E3?

Or is that someone else? It's definitely somebody.

Anyway I haven't been a Nintendo guy since the N64 because I'm not 11 years old anymore.

Because I've never owned a Nintendo and I thought it might be interesting to try one. Their price point for entry is usually pretty low and you'd assume that they've learned a few things from the failure of the Wii U. I know that they don't usually have a great launch lineup but that tends to be the case for most systems nowadays.

Prices for electronics are so stupidly cheap now that buying a new system isn't necessarily a huge investment. The PS4 cost less than the Commodore 64 did.

Yeah the Saturn was a piece of shit. Sega was all over the place for a while with a bunch of half assed and half thought out ideas. The Sega CD and then the 32x add ons. Then the Saturn. The Dreamcast was a badass little system but after three straight failures people didn't want to give it a chance. Sega had lost their anti Nintendo position to Sony and Sony was kicking ass with a massive software lineup for its PSOne. So the Dreamcast was fucked from jump street really. Although it was a massively powerful system for its day and even had online functionality years before it was the norm.
