So another twist this week. I was surprised by how much time we were spending in the Mirror Universe, but it seems like it was all leading up to this,

My immediate reaction is that the potential nuances of the character have gone out the window in favour of making him evil along. It seemed that way with Tyler - they could have continued the PTSD angle and made him an unwilling brainwashed agent. But it turned out he was Voq all this time, as many fans had predicted months in advance. And while I initially liked the idea of L'Rell's plan being affected by their unexpected trip to the MU, I don't really get what the plan was had everything worked out.

Now we find that Lorca isn't a hard-edged Captain struggling to hold onto his Starfleet values. He's been a bad dude from the start. Another twist that has been circulating online ever since we got to the MU. We're led to believe that Lorca deliberately sought out Burnham in the Prime Universe - but he was pretty lucky that she mutinied and got herself thrown n prison and available for being recruited.

I liked the scene between Stamets and Culber. I can understand the feeling that it plays even deeper into the "Bury your gays" criticism, considering Culber returns for the sole purpose of clarifying that he's definitely dead.

There's only a few episodes left so I'm wondering what the end game for this season is. Lorca becoming Emperor in the MU? The Mirror Discovery doing something crazy in the Prime Universe while our heroes have been gone? Is the off-screen Klingon War still going to be raging in season 2? Is the Spore drive going to be rendered kaput as hinted by the dying plants this week?

My guess would be, next episode Lorcas defeats Georgiou, then want's to keep the Discovery in the Mirror Universe. Then the last few episodes will be Michael and the crew of the Discovery escaping Lorcas whilst trying to find a way out of the MU.

Can't see Jason Issacs coming back for season two.

The big corridor shoot-out this week was neat, in terms of the various tactics deployed.

Such a ho-hum conclusion to Lorca's arc. No sense of what it was like for him in the Prime universe. Just twirling his evil moustache throughout. I enjoyed Michelle Yeoh deflecting a knife throw with a kick.

Discovery has some cringeworthy dialogue at times, but I think the way they hit you over the head with things is even worse. I liked seeing Saru in command and rousing the troops, but my eyes were rolling when Tilly and Stamets repeated his "no win situation" speech during their private conversation. It just strikes me as completely over-earnest and obvious that so many characters stand around pontificating about events which we've already seen recounted. I wish the show would trust that the audience remembers a sentiment from a scene 5 - 10 minutes ago.

And the talk of the Federation's idealism still rings completely hollow when they spent so much time being anti-Starfleet during the hostilities with the Klingons - the Mirror Universe is undoubtedly worse, but we're basically meant to believe in these characters' values without actually seeing them act upon them on-screen very often. The twists are way too transparent now. Did the war map reveal come as a surprise to anyone as soon as they mentioned that they'd be travelling through time as well as space?

As soon as Lorca' true intentions were revealed his character literally went out the window and he was just playing a straight-up bad guy this week. I still enjoyed it, but when he died I didn't really feel anything.

I'm still enjoying this. Those last 3 episodes in the MU were good and I'm glad they aren't stuck there. I don't know how I feel about coming back to face the Klingon's, I'm guessing Ash is gonna be the secret weapon?

So the Botnik studio has had a go at predicting an episode of TNG, as it did with Harry Potter a while ago. I love how Worf's father is disgraced at the drop of a hat and Data renames himself Jack Membrane. Spoilered for size:

I think it was a fairly stand-out 'throwaway' comment from Admiral FaceWrinkle that her Gabriel couldn't have possibly survived in the MU on his own, didn't you? Surely the 'real' Lorca will show up eventually, grizzled and war torn from the MU, with something up his sleeve to help save the day as well?

But yeah I was getting the feeling that Tyler will in some way be the secret weapon - they'll have him done up like fucking Khaless speaking Klingon and saying "OCH EVERYBODY JUST RELAX AND STOP BEING MENTAL" or something.

That last episode there was by far my favourite of the whole series. Saru is just a fucking brilliant captain, Michael manages to still not be annoying as I thought she would quickly get when I started watching...everyone, every single main cast member is just so terrific, and the Emperor in the captain's seat going to rip the Klingons' a new pooper is so great. Love, love love this series.

I was a bit disappointed that MU Stamets got offed - he could've been a BRILLIANT recurring character if not latterly in this season then in (hopefully) future seasons.

Actually, I was saying to my ex I'm not entirely convinced that MU Lorca is dead - when he was dispatched into the Mycelium reactor, I didn't take it as a given that he was straight up being eviscerated. I mean clearly it looked like he was basically atomised, but at the same time I thought it maybe looked like he was being transported/absorbed INTO the Mycelium network?

nice little nod to Archer's Enterprise on this week's episode, I liked the subtlety of that.

I really like Saru as the Captain - he's come into his own after being more of a peripheral character during the first half of the season.

Tilly going to sit with Tyler was a nice parallel to how she treated Burnham at the beginning. I'm surprised that they've seemingly got rid of Voq and framed Tyler as an innocent victim. I was expecting the ambiguity over who or what he is to last longer. Seems a bit of a stretch that he's free to walk around the ship so soon. I liked the way Stamets reacted to him in the corridor - it would have been so easy to do the clichéd shove-him-up-against-the-wall routine.

Killer ending with Georgiou taking the chair. I'm guessing the season will be book-ended by mutinies, assuming she intends to go mental on the Klingons and not restrict herself to military targets. Intrigued by the conversation with Sarek seeming "final". The Prime Lorca has to show up (if not next week, then in the second season) after the way he was quickly written off as having no chance of surviving in the MU. The Discovery hung around for days without anyone raising an eyebrow.

Finally caught up to this outlandish-as-fuck show ... and I kinda love it now.

Though I've grown tired of the lead security officer crying like a sniveling bitch every other episode. Clearly he's a very torn individual (though that's probably not at all the right term), and I couldn't possibly begin to understand how emotionally and mentally taxed he is in such situations, but for fuck sake his continuous sour weepy face has just done me in for the character.

Everything else though is quite enjoyable, and I hope Georgiou goes hard as fuck on everything klingon in the finale.

Also the effects have been surprisingly good. Must be very difficult to balance the current ability of tv production with doing a super technological space prequel, but it's all landed very well for my liking.

I found Tyler infuriating during that scene with Burnham where he boiled down his murder and attempted murder as things becoming "complicated" and that she was somehow being unreasonable. It was so jarring that it felt like bad writing rather than something he would actually claim.

Season 2 will be intriguing for the simple fact that it could be radically different. There's been a war, an officer conditioned by the enemy, a captain from another universe, an entire arc inside said universe, the return of a dead mentor, two crew members have been killed suddenly and we've now had a time jump of several months. What will a normal season look like, especially when they seem very devoted to long cons and recurring themes over time. I bet even the traditional shuttle crash or transporter accident motifs would be mental on this show.

I really like this show a lot. I get why some people aren't into it but I think the cast is excellent and have taken the material given to them and done wonders with it.

Yeah, that felt a bit off. He literally tried to murder her, and then the next time he sees her, he has a go at her for wanting to end the relationship because things got complicated. Haha.

yeah he went a bit Dawson's Creek on her there when really it was more along the lines of that episode of Boy Meets World where Cory's bone marrow gets possessed by Klingon biological memories and consciousness and he tries to break Topanga's neck

Just finished the season. Resubbed and binged the second half through the finale. Solid finish. Not especially great, but it did a great job of wrapping up the story and setting up a much more interesting season two.

Very glad that the final shot looked more TOS than STD, but they need to improve their space effects. The ships look worse with their cgi to me than in any of the past shows. I'm not sure what budgets are like, but Enterprise looked a lot better over a decade ago using cgi.

Also, their science is bad. Like when they said a station was 300 AUs from Earth and it's orbiting a blue planet, I that would be within the solar system. Seems like something that should have been noticed by an editor.

Saru referring to himself as unpalatable and Tilly posing as an arms dealer were the best things in the episode. Sonequa Martin-Green's acting varies wildly for me, but she's as good as the material which is given to her. I thought her account of what happened with her parents was decent, but we probably should have heard it earlier in the season to make her dealings with the Klingons and Tyler/Voq more poignant. In contrast, I thought the monologue at the end was completely over-the-top and clichéd - her delivery was cringeworthy at times.

Overall, the finale was surprisingly uneventful and mostly just a reset of everything that came before it. They didn't have time to mine anything memorable from Georgiou's captaincy, making it seem like her reveal at the end of last week's episode was a twist for the sake of it. Burnham looks painfully stupid when she reacts with surprise at finding out that the MU Georgiou is different from the Prime one. The war which we've barely seen on-screen is over, with the unintentionally hilarious idea of one Klingon holding the entire planet hostage with a bomb as their get-out. The spore drive is kaput until they can get a non-human host - it remains to be seen if that will be picked up in the future or if that's their way of getting around the lack of a spore drive in shows set after Discovery. Seeing the Enterprise was cool, but again they go overboard with fan service by immediately using the original theme in the credits. Based on how things have gone so far, I'm guessing it's just another "shock" moment rather than the Enterprise and Pike becoming integrated parts of the show.

I have no idea what to expect from season 2. This show has never been not interesting, but it's been a real mess at times in terms of juggling characters and story threads. Basing so much of it around Burnham was a mistake, I think. Saru for me is a more likable character simply because we haven't been hit over the head with multiple family and personal traumas. He has quietly become more assertive and earned respect from the crew and the viewer over time. Same with Tilly - I found her annoying at first, but her comic relief has become essential in a show that has gotten progressively darker and more desperate over time.

We're about to get a third actor playing Spock, aren't we? And two at the same time, which is weird.

The Enterprise being so close to TOS was a huge relief and the biggest piece of fan service thus far. The two extra episodes they filmed for the season were just to repeatedly punch the reset button. The end of the mirror stuff, with them getting back late and having lost the war, seems pretty clearly their original cliffhanger/idea for season two before reacting to the fans' reactions. Saying how much of their fleet was destroyed was just another reset button, as I expect the replacement ships to look more and more like TOS. On both sides (Klingon/Fed.)

They have a solid core crew to build around now (Saru, Tilley, Michael, what's her face with the metal thing in her head, Stannis and metalhead) and should just focus on developing the characters while exploring for a year. One long story can work for a season, but it works better if you already know the characters, rather than it being your introduction to them. I think they'd fare better looking at season four of Enterprise, where they did two, three and four parters rather than a single story thread. Mirror fell into that mold but went probably one episode too long. I hope the new captain isn't another short term Lorca/Gorgeiu situation, where they're only around for a season.

I will binge the series, but I feel like they are mining TOS in the same way Voyager mined TNG to oblivion with Borg and the Q.

Amazing news. They've made it clear it's not a reboot of TNG, but the next chapter of Picard's life. A return to the Prime universe and his role in it is fascinating to me. Is he still commanding the Enterprise? Has he finally taken an Admiral position? Could it be a more dramatic and political show with him in an ambassadorial position, helping to pick up the pieces of the Dominion War? Will they resist (ahem) bringing him face-to-face with the Borg once again?

Picard facing off against the Borg has to happen again. I expect its him dealing with the Romulan mess Spock made on his way. I am shocked there are no scripts for this. Shit, I have rough draft for a new Trek crew with Picard as an Ambassador and Kirk as a holo character. Christ, they make it out to be rocket science.

So is anyone watching Season 2 of Discovery?

First two episodes were decent enough. Pike is a good change from Lorca and I already feel like I know more about his character just from watching low-key conversations between him and the crew. The circumstances of his arrival are so vaguely spelt out that it feels like the ending to season 1 was just a twist for the sake of it. I like how they’re trying to bring the other characters on the Bridge to the fore. Episode 2 was probably the most Trek-like episode of Discovery so far. A bog standard prime directive show. Nothing ground breaking but a nice change of pace from the relentless pace and darkness of season 1.

Episode 3 typified everything I dislike about this show. Far too many stories being juggled in one episode and all of them advancing so quickly that the impact of what has transpired is lost. An avalanche of exposition. The obsession with Burnham being the answer to everything and having her be the conduit through which other characters understand or realise something. A distracting directorial style (felt like every scene transition started with the camera in an upside down position). Gorey imagery which just feels designed to shock rather than being necessary or in keeping with the style of the show.

I’m very worried about what they have planned for Spock. An enormous amount is being added to his backstory, from his childhood to a time period not too far out from his days with Kirk. They’ve gone hard in inserting Burnham into every facet of his family. I wonder if the writers of this show are capable of backing up what they’ve laid out so far. Will we get a reasonable explanation as to why he has behaved in the way he has (assuming what we’ve been told so far is true)? Or will we get into plot devices like time travel or mind wiping as a way of resetting what’s happened before he reaches his TOS days?

I want to watch this season, because I always feel Pike just short changed in Star Trek lore, because Shatner's Kirk is like everything awesome about awesome. Pike was the first Captain we saw on TV and never got his due. Even in the original series, they write him off in a flashback episode. So, I am happy to see him get some love. However, Burnham is the worst character in Star Trek history. She is shoehorned into a dynamic that doesn't work with Sarek and his family. If she was raised by some other Vulcans, fine. I am excited about it, but being part of Sarek's family with everything Spock goes through as a half human and half Vulcan is just stupid. If they wanted to shock the audience, I would have killed her instead of Michelle Yeoh's character in the finale. Get her out of the way and allow the rest of the crew to breath.

Right now, Orville is just killing it by being a show where it feels like Star Trek and is doing some daring stuff. The new Picard show being directed by Frakes hopefully leads to a cameo or at least a guest role in the future.

I haven't seen Frakes in forever.

Is he thin yet? Did he eat his way through to the other side?
