So Katsuya Kitamura has left New Japan and no one knows why. Meltzer said it's not due to concussions but "something else undisclosed".

What a shame. Can't imagine it's because of roids or anything because as far as I know, that's not really an issue in Japan. Hoping it's not something that defames his character and more of a circumstantial problem.

reports are that hiromu takahashi suffered a broken neck in his match with dragon lee last night, extremely bad news. a real top talent all around. way too many people in NJPW trying to kill themselves every big match.

I actually don’t think it’s as prevalent as back in the 90s, but people like Hiromu and Ibushi are very guilty of it. Hiromu in particular has always had a very reckless style that was going to catch up to him eventually, especially when he faces Dragon Lee. It’s a shame because he could have tweaked it a bit and still had an exciting style. This might lead to him changing altogether whenever he recovers. Hope he comes out alright in the end.

I really liked it, I've only occasionally tuned in on AXS and I don't really know anyone outside of Haku,Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, Cody, Zack Sabre Jr & Will Ospreay.... I really enjoyed the card all throughout. As for JR's commentary... I assume he watches NJPW as much as I do? Lol... I appreciate his voice on commentary though.

This seems kind of crazy but the specificity of it has to be noted. So NJPW is struggling to sell tickets for night one of the G1 in Dallas. They reduced the price of the tickets and then later announced Okada, White, Naito, and Ibushi being present. First, those four were GOING to be there because that's just the nature of the G1. This is the crazy part. According to Meltzer, between the time they reduced the tickets and then announced those four, they only sold...62 tickets. That's it.

They should have announced that Jay White had been removed from the G1.

    Dallas though? Kind of strange.

Cuban owns AXS TV, which airs NJPW in the United States and he is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks (which play at the arena where this is being held) so it makes sense that they attempted to try something different. Definitely a big swing and a miss, at the moment.

i think anyone who was ever going to buy a ticket to that show already knows the top guys are going to be there because they know what the g1 is.

you would think this show would do better because it's the first REAL new japan show in america. i guess there's too much travel burnout among the fly in crowd.

The biggest complaint I heard just talking to people at MSG was that the show is in Texas.

I’m going, but I’m not going to any of the AEW stuff so I’m different there.

a SHO/Shingo singles match seems a lock for the BOSJ, and it should be awesome. their stuff total carried the main event of the last show.

shingo is looking like one of the best in the world. i hope he gets some big singles matches this year. should have a killer bosj run at least.

the main event scene's feeling stale to be honest. not many possibilities left that excite me, except for okada/ibushi. they need to strap the rocket on someone new. for me jay white was a dud as far as replacing omega as a viable main eventer who you can get excited about in main events.

"Switchblade" Jay White feels like a guy who has the potential to actually come into his own and be a great asset to Japan, but who's really trying too hard. He's good enough in the ring and he's a good looking dude with a great body, but he's trying to square peg himself into a round hole and it just doesn't do it for me.

How's Fit Finlay's kid or nephew or whatever doing in New Japan? I've seen his work and he seems pretty well set up to be a big deal some day.

The problem with Jay White is obvious and we've all read it or said it. Trying tooooo hard to be the new Kenny Omega. The super push they gave him was ridiculous.

I don’t think they really have anything in common. NJPW has been incredibly high on White since he was a dojo boy. A super push was inevitable. His push is actually very similar to Okada’s original one.

I caught the top three matches from New Beginning in Nagoya.

Tenzan/Khan for the rights to use the mongolian chop. Interesting in a passing of the torch sort of way. Tenzan worked hard and the post-match suggests his retirement is edging closer. Khan not particularly impressive really. Needs to do more.

Ospreay and Kojima then had a hardcore weapons match which featured tables, ladders, chairs and more. It was lots of fun with Ospreay taking most of the bumps as you'd expect. The spot from the turnbuckle through the ladder was really sick. Kojima was great and he's still moving well for 50.

Main event featuring Tanahashi challenging Shingo for the NEVER belt. Super long, longest ever match for this title I hear at over 35 minutes. Will get lots of plaudits. Shingo with an excellent showing as is customary for him but more notable was Tanahashi's performance. Pretty special given how increasingly obvious his knee issues are. He looks absolutely fucked, runs like an old man but he battled through it and rolled back the years. Bit too long for me but a very good match regardless.

So in summary, three old broken down legends gave increasingly impressive performances and it was enjoyable. Moxley/KENTA announced for next month too.

Yeah it was a fun show. Tenzan looked better than he had in forever and the match stip was super fun. Will vs Kojima was a really fun hardcore match which they rarely do. And the main event was a banger.

What the fucks a "Roku channel"?

I have a TCL Roku tv, do I have this "Roku channel"?

I'm far from tech illiterate so if this confuses me I can only imagine how the hell boomers are going to be able to watch njpw.

If you have a roku tv I think the roku channel is a default channel on your list of channels. I have been meaning to check on this myself since I saw the news. I have a roku tv as well.

    That's terrible.

Naito got injured as well. Although I think the Ibushi match is going ahead anyway.

New Japan's in a right old state right now imo.

I am not making a thread yet since the rumors are unconfirmed but there is a lot of smoke to the fire that Antonio Inoki has died.

NJPW also announced Wrestle Grand Slam, which will happen over two nights on May 15 and May 29.

The first takes place at Yokohoma Stadium, an outdoor baseball stadium, similar to what they did last year with Summer Struggle in Jingu. The second show happens at the Tokyo Dome.

Yeah really enjoyable. Ospreay breaking his nose and bleeding all over ZSJ when he was in the triangle really enhanced the match.

i didn't end up watching, but apparently it was decent, but lack of a crowd hurt it.

mox called out yuji nagata to face him for the US title, which i'm all for.

So at Dontaku Ospreay defends against Shingo. The winner defends the title later in the month in the Tokyo Dome against Okada.

I like William but I'm such a big mark for Ibushi that I'm not really sure how to feel about this. Barely 3 months as champion. Eh, guess it's better than nothing. Ibushi, imo, best wrestler on the planet.

Can't wait for, and am hoping for: Ryu Lee, Lio Rush, Samuray Del Sol, and Chris Bey in NJPW in the Junior Hvyweight Division. Bring back Ricochet and Marty Scurll - that would be sick.

As much as I like NJPW, the logic behind a double pin is not sound.

They would be breaking up each other's pinfall attempt, not pinning each other.

A smart referee would not even count, it's essentially a rope break without touching the ropes.

Just saw the pic. Both had both shoulders down while the other one is touching them so there for it is a double pin. SANADA had Sabre's shoulders down and Sabre was able to get SANADA's shoulders down. How would it be breaking up each other's pinfall?

I think they need someone to get a few defenses of the title. I don't think you put that on Tanahashi

I debated going to the upcoming show in Chicago but finally got around at looking at tickets and well they are more than what I want to pay for where I would be sitting on top of driving or taking the train back and forth. Maybe another time. I wish they would do a show here in St. Louis.

That being said Suzuki is coming to St. Louis the week after to work Glory Pro Wrestling. I didn't realize until after the fact he was in town last year and worked a show with them against Davey Richards. I don't know who is wrestling but I got tickets. Danhausen, Brody King, Dante Martin are scheduled as well. Davey Richards I think is just a part of this group. I think he has a school here in town.

The main event of that Chicago show is Moxley vs Ospreay

Also New Japan Cup has been really damn good and the quarterfinals are stacked

    Okada vs CIMA
    Hiromu vs Shingo
    ZSJ vs Ospreay
    Naito vs Cobb

Yeah I know. Kicking myself that I didn't plan ahead once they announced the show to see if I could budget going. They need to come do St. Louis dammit.

Oh well. I will get to see Suzuki live. Don't know who he is wresting yet. Glory Pro has a show this week so they will start laying out that show in the next couple weeks.

It would be cool if they did a New Japan cup with every winner or at least had every winner in it. I always wanted to see something like that in WWE with King of the Ring. Get 8 of the winners and see what happens.

I would be down for that. Even if it is a mini tournament depending on the number of former winners around and available.

Zach Sabre Jr wins it again. Nice run to win it with wins over Naito, Shingo and Ospreay
