    I'm down with the STRONGMAN.

    Would prefer Nakanishi though.

It is a good question though, Tanahashi has beaten pretty much everyone, and only Naito is really on the way up.

I don't get the Yujiro hate; until the Tanahashi matches I placed him above Naito easily.

Now that I would love to see.

You think the crowds would take it seriously at this point?

I am dying for Marufuji to fight Nakamura, not only because that would blow my socks off, but because that would open the door for Marufuji to fight Tanahashi. And I would explode.

Yujiro is sort of the Matt Hardy of the pair, which people have said before. He's the competant worker of the two, but nobody wants to pay to see him.

Beautiful. I love his massive round face.

Inoue is going to get ripped apart and it going to be glorious.

I'm sure he also said some really heartwarming things.

Unless I fucked my math up Tanahashi needs to make it to May 8th to break Shinya Hashimoto's record in terms of length by days as IWGP Champion

Thinking about it further Wrestling Dontaku is only 5 days before that. They did the gimmick where Nagata tried to defend his record. If Tanahashi makes it that far I wonder who defends Hashimoto's.

The fun answer would be Daichi but that would be a disaster.

Could Chono or Mutoh manage a main event? Tanahashi/Chono really hasn't been done.

They have to convince people that Okada's worth a damn somehow.

Poor kid; what are Gedo and Jado thinking?

    From the Observer:

Bushinroad Group Publishing, a popular card game company, has purchased 100 percent of the stock of New Japan Pro Wrestling from previous owners Yukes, a video game company in a transaction that was announced earlier today.
More details are forthcoming but the deal goes into effect tomorrow.

    Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

This seems totally out of left field, though obviously we don't get a ton of Japanese business news out here. It does seem strange, since Yukes seemed happy with New Japan, and unless i'm mistaken, New Japan has finally just recently pulled out of the early 00s nose dive.

Maybe New Japan finally became profitable enough to sell for a profit?

Maybe Yukes isn't doing so well?

Schwarz and Weiss worked the October's Sumo Hall Show. Anything like that will be in the same boat as Captain New Japan or Killer Rabbit probably.

Besides remember that Tiger Mask, Big Van Vader, and Jushin Liger all started out as Anime characters.

According to Puroresu Spirit at the end of the press conference the CEO of Busihroad said his goal is to topple WWE. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad sign.

Bushiroad, the new owners of New Japan Pro-Wrestling, today held a live presentation to announce some details on the future direction of the company. Here are the main things revealed at the event:

    - “WRESTLE KINGDOM 7 IN TOKYO DOME” has already been confirmed for 1/4/13. They seem to have dropped the Roman numeral numbers for various concepts such as this so it’s listed as 7 instead of VII.
    - The “G1 CLIMAX 22″ was also announced with two dates revealed: 8/3 Korakuen Hall and 8/12 Sumo Hall (the final).
    - The yearly Sumo Hall event in October has been given a “more intelligible name” and from now on will be called “KING OF PRO WRESTLING IN RYOGOKU”, named after a new card game Bushiroad will be releasing.
    - The historic “G1 TAG LEAGUE” name is no more and the concept will be renamed to the “WORLD TAG LEAGUE” while the end-of-year tour will be called “ROAD TO TOKYO DOME” to make it more of a coherent lead-in to the January super-show.
    - Other minor tours will be renamed such as the January/February series becoming “NEW YEAR GOLDEN ROAD”.
    - The most intriguing one is that something called the “WORLD WAR LEAGUE” will begin in Spring 2013, hinting at something new, possibly international based and a replacement for the New Japan Cup?

    - New Japan will begin to produce a new 60 minute show on BS Asahi with the tentative name of “WORLD PRO WRESTLING RETURNS”.
    - New Japan will begin to produce a new late-night radio show on AM1422 with the tenative name of “NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING RADIO”.
    - TOKYO MX will beging to rebroadcast the famous “Tiger Mask” anime with the idea it could reach young kids who would then become interested in New Japan, where of course the fourth generation of Tiger Mask has wrestled for years now.

    - As mentioned, Bushiroad will release a new trading card game called “KING OF PRO WRESTLING”, a release that has been planned for some time, even before the company bought out New Japan. The first booster pack is scheduled to come out around the time of the 10/8 Sumo Hall show and players will be able to discover combos with tag teams and many other cool features.

    - The well known Good Smile Company have began making a brand new range of New Japan figures and the president of the company, Aki Takanori, had some banter with wrestlers present today – such as being politely asked by Tenzan to make his head smaller than on usual Tenzan action figures! Kojima wants people to be able to press a button and hear his voice.

    - New Japan wrestlers will begin to use the power of Twitter more, to communicate with fans. Ace Hiroshi Tanahashi can now be found @tanahashi1_100. Others are already on Twitter such as Nagata, Naito, Devitt, Nakamura, Captain New Japan, and Kanemoto.

    - Sumo legend Akebono will return to New Japan from the summer and by the sounds of it will make New Japan his main home from that point onwards. He said he is looking forward to returning and dying New Japan the colour of Akebono.

The ultimate aim of New Japan under Bushiroad seems clear – to become bigger, better, and more accessible to new fans. And not just Japanese fans as it is clear that Bushiroad wants to make New Japan more of an international company and expand beyond the comfort zone of Japan. The renaming of shows/tours, the release of card games and action figures, the rebroadcast of Tiger Mask… all point towards a new direction for New Japan with new names and ideas, without changing the traditional feel of the company too much.

    Sounds good

EDIT: It sounds very good. This could be a big step.

There are logos too! I like logos!

Really this sort of streamlining and aiming at the mainstream, if it works, is going to make them seem so much more modern and significant than NOAH and All Japan that it will be ridiculous.

I think we'll see the days of the Japanese wrestling scene looking a lot like the American one does now.

Is this the first time a Japanese wrestling company has had a regular TV show(assuming it's meant to be a weekly show in the vein of Raw/Impact/ROH TV/Etc.)?

Still, this really does all sound like great things to be happening for the company. Who knows? Maybe it'll suddenly be easier for me to follow?

Nah, it won't be like Raw or Impact or whatever. It's just twice as long as the show they had before and (apparently) on terrestrial television so there is a much larger number of households who'll be able to see it.

Yeah, I was just googling about and noticed this. Assume the guy on SSS figured it and TV Asahi were one and the same, but it's just a subsidiary?

Ah, alright. I figured it'd probably be something along those lines anyway, I just didn't know if they had a show like that before now.

    NJPW “40TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW”, 3/4/12 (WPW/PPV)
    Tokyo Korakuen Hall
2,040 Fans – Super No Vacancy Full House

    1. Prince Devitt, Ryusuke Taguchi & KUSHIDA beat Tama Tonga, Hiromu Takahashi & Takaaki Watanabe (11:10) when KUSHIDA used the Midnight Express on Watanabe.
    2. YOSHI-HASHI & Tomohiro Ishii beat Tomoaki Honma & Captain New Japan (10:19) when YOSHI-HASHI used a Swanton bomb on Captain.
    3. Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask beat Jado & Gedo (8:36) when Tiger used a Tiger suplex hold on Gedo.
    4. Togi Makabe, Yuji Nagata & Wataru Inoue beat Minoru Suzuki, TAKA Michinoku Kaientai Dojo & Taichi (12:35) when Nagata used a backdrop hold on Taichi.
    5. Toru Yano & Takashi Iizuka beat Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima (14:37) when Yano used the Kuro Kirishima on Kojima.
    6. Special 6 Man Tag Match: Shinsuke Nakamura, Masato Tanaka ZERO1 & Yujiro Takahashi beat Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto & Karl Anderson (14:18) when Nakamura used the Boma Ye on Anderson.
    7. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Kazuchika Okada (c) beat Tetsuya Naito (28:50) with the Rainmaker (1st defense).

    * On the 40th anniversary of Japan’s longest standing and most famous pro wrestling group, two new generation stars headlined for the IWGP Heavyweight Champion with Kazuchika Okada, who shocked the world last month when he dethroned Tanahashi, facing the man who beat Tanahashi’s greatest rival Nakamura on the same show, Tetsuya Naito. Okada survived this grueling half hour challenge against the spirited Naito, pinning him after hitting the Rainmaker to complete a successful V1 defense. Okada declared himself the IWGP champion of a new era after the match. Fans are raving about this match, with the popular Black Eye blog calling it “Amazing amazing amazing! Legendary match.” and saying it was probably even better than the Tanahashi vs. Naito from last October.

    * IWGP Tag Team Champions, Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima, suffered an upset loss ahead of their upcoming title defense against Yoshihiro Takayama & Lance Archer, when they fell to CHAOS’ Toru Yano & Takashi Iizuka in a non-title match, Yano pinning Kojima. Should TenKoji retain their belts against Suzuki Gun, it would appear likely that Yano & Iizuka would move into top contendership following this win.

    * Hidekazu “Kero” Tanaka, New Japan’s most famous ring announcer of years gone by, made a return as a special guest.

I'm really glad to hear that the main event was an amazing match, because maybe the blossoming of that feud for the future would really redeem this whole decision to put the title on Okada.

I'm still upset they have not capitalized on Honma's amazing match with Masato Tanaka, and have him back doing meaningless tags.

    3. Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask & Ryusuke Taguchi beat Rocky Romero, Jado & Gedo (10:51) when Liger used an air scissors drop on Gedo.
    4. Toru Yano, Takashi Iizuka & YOSHI-HASHI beat Karl Anderson, Captain New Japan & Tama Tonga (9:33) when Yano used the Kuro Kirishima on Tonga.
    5. Togi Makabe, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima, Yuji Nagata & Wataru Inoue beat Minoru Suzuki, Yoshihiro Takayama, Lance Archer, TAKA Michinoku Kaientai Dojo & Taichi (15:35) when Makabe used a King Kong kneedrop on Taichi.
    6. Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura, Masato Tanaka ZERO1 & Yujiro Takahashi beat Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Tetsuya Naito & Tomoaki Honma (16:08) when Okada used the Rainmaker on Honma.
    7. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title: Prince Devitt (c) beat Davey Richards (15:25) with the Bloody Sunday (4th defense).

    * Devitt’s successful V4 defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title means that he will carry the belt to CMLL in Mexico as he heads there after tomorrow’s show, starting up on the 15th and remaining there until April 8th. Today’s win over IWGP Jr. Tag Title co-holder Richards means that New Japan’s long-standing junior ace has retained the belt three times against him now over his two reigns. Devitt’s first reign lasted one day shy of a year and a record-breaking 7 defenses, but his second reign is quietly chugging along, as he will soon be half a year into the reign with four challengers bypassed.

    7. IWGP Intercontinental Title: Hirooki Goto (c) beat Yujiro Takahashi (17:08) with the Shouten Kai (1st defense).

    * Goto overcame a tough challenge in the form of Yujiro today as he made a successful V1 defense of his IWGP Intercontinental Title. In doing so scored his second win of the year over Yujiro following a victory on 1/29 at Korakuen. The up-and-coming CHAOS man has chance for quick retaliation though as they meet again on 4/1 in the New Japan Cup first round.

I was ecstatic to hear the news, but he has denied the rumors on Twitter. I'm still hopeful, since Jericho denied his return. Fingers crossed.

New Japan have today announced that due to a private issue, the company has terminated the contract of Tomoaki Honma. The company haven’t elaborated but it usually takes something quite serious for a Japanese wrestler to leave a company while under contract.

Honma had been with New Japan since early 2007 when he joined Makabe’s heel group GBH, and when Nakamura performed a coup d’état and took over GBH in 2009 (turning it into CHAOS), Honma was the only one who remained with Makabe and the two became fan favourites. I’ll post more details on his exit if they ever come to light.

I don't think Defrost posted this, from Meltzer (I think):

Tomoaki Honma, 35, was released this past week. The reason was said to be non-wrestling related. It was actually that Honma had a Yakuza connection in selling house show tickets and the new ownership group after all the problems with NOAH decided to be proactive and get rid of him. Right now the Japanese corporate world across the board is being very careful about Yakuza issues as there is a strong movement in the country about eliminating them from having so much influence over society. Honma was a rare wrestler who came from an indie background who was signed by New Japan. He was never really pushed well, but had plenty of good matches and his IC title match in December against Masato Tanaka was one of the best matches in the last few months anywhere in the world. No details yet as to what the real story was here.

The only time I can think of off the top of my head that Mutoh and Chono wrestled each other was the 91 G-1 Cimax final.

They wrestled at a bunch of G1s. I actually found a couple after posting the match listing so I am adding those to the review. Those plus the infamously bad 1/4/00 match which I have not watched yet.

What do people think? Okada looks a bit lost at times and tries to cover up with a smirk, but to be honest he's been the freshest thing to happen to the New Japan main event scene in years. Goto here is actually okay, which is a huge improvement from the generic drizzling shits he has been ever since he started wearing the Aikido pants.

I read a lot of raves for this match. I wasn't as into it. Everyone is on the Okada train though. Too bad Tana is winning the title back on Saturday. No way Sumo Hall is headlined by a Kea title match and an Okada title match.

You think? It would seem like a silly thing to just take the belt off of Okada now that everyone's on board the Rainmaker Express, especially since there's still more mileage to get off it.

The best thing about him is that he's just the embodiment of the cocky little shit athlete who is impossible to respect, but is so athletic that he wins anyway. It's such a great character. Clearly only Jado and Gedo knew he had it in him.

Naito has to win the title off Tanahashi sooner than later is another reason

Athletic and lucky being the key. The more I think about it the more his not being as polished and experienced are actually helping him with this character. He's this athletic little shit who doesn't deserve to win but do to some miracle does anyway. Both the Naito and the Goto title defenses embody this to some degree, where Okada's getting his ass kicked, then do to carelessness on the part of the opponent, winds up in perfect position where his athleticism saves the day, and Okada wins the match. I doubt we'll be seeing an all-time classic from the kid any time soon, but whether he's being carried or not (and for the record, I think he is) he he probably shouldn't be having matches as good as this.

They really should. It would make the most sense from a timing perspective. And last year's 1/4 was so haphazard.

New Japan today announced that CHAOS tandem Toru Yano & Takashi Iizuka have been stripped of their IWGP Tag Team Title with immediate effect after the double non-finish in Osaka on Saturday. President Sugabayashi said they could not be deemed worthy champions after such a finish (or non-finish). It looks like the Osaka match won’t be recognised as Yano & Iizuka’s V1 defense either. But all is not lost for the dastardly duo as they have a quick chance to reclaim the title in a July packed with title matches.

Prince Devitt defends his NWA World Historic Middleweight Title, won earlier in the year when he traveled to Mexico, against Suzuki Gun’s Taichi on 7/8 at Korakuen Hall. At the end of the same tour, New Japan hits the Yamagata Sports Center with four huge title matches. As mentioned, Yano & Iizuka can regain the IWGP Tag Team Title but so can Tenzan & Kojima as the two sides meet in a decision match to determine the 60th champions. Whoever wins the IWGP Heavyweight Title clash at Sumo Hall on July 1st won’t have much time to enjoy that victory as either Tanahashi or Makabe will defend the title against Masato Tanaka later in the main event of the Yamagata show.

New Japan’s secondary singles belt, the IWGP Intercontinental Title, suddenly doesn’t seem quite so secondary as Hirooki Goto will make his V3 defense of the one-year old title against old rival Shinsuke Nakamura in a huge match that some would say is even bigger than the IWGP Heavyweight Title match. And finally, Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask make their V1 defense of the IWGP Jr. Tag Team Title against the foreign duo of Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov, the latter of whom impressed in the Super Jr. so has been invited back. Akebono, Kota Ibushi, and Daisuke Sasaki will appear on the 7/18-7/19 Sapporo Teisen Hall double header on this tour also.

After the tour and before the G1, New Japan is again at Korakuen Hall with a show that sees Low Ki defends his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title in an already much anticipated match against Ibushi.

Where's the best place to find DVDs of New Japan that isn't like $40-50 a piece? Not interested in Ebay, but if you cats have any credible spots could you help me out? Trying to stack up my international wrestling DVD collection for my son who's really into Japanese wrestling. I just snatched up a couple FMW DVDs for real cheap through Amazon and didn't really have any luck for promotions like New Japan or NOAH. Thanks!

    In the Observer

The 6/23 TV show was apparently the highest rated in a long time. This was the show where they aired Hiroshi Tanahashi’s title win over Kazuchika Okada from 6/16. The show aired from 2:45 a.m. to 3:15 a.m. and delivered an 80 share, which means that 80% of the homes watching television in the country during that half hour were watching wrestling. That sounds ridiculous. I don’t know what that is as a rating because it’s not like a lot of people are up watching television at that time, but they can do 3-4 ratings and those aren’t 80 shares. Granted, not a ton of people are watching television on Saturday nights in that time slot, but it’s still amazing to pull what was likely a 4+ rating in that time slot.

Between this, the largest Tokyo Dome crowd in four years, and being responsible for the first positive return year for New Japan in literally YEARS, I don't think that was ever in any doubt.

I'm sure he'll be happy to win the least researched award of Dave Meltzer's year.
