Here is the list of good PBP announcers in American wrestling history: Lance Russell, Gordan Solie, Jim Ross. Thus ends the list. That is why I don't get the obsession some people have with getting English announcing.

The list according to you, which fyi isn't definitive. People will obviously find it more accessible if the commentary is in English and they can actually understand the stories being told etc. Not everyone can speak Japanese dude

Yup, this. It doesn't matter how "good" the announcing is(which I doubt it'd be anything less than decent), it's the fact that people who haven't followed everything for years can now understand the depth of everything going on. Each performer's background, how big they are in the company, why, if there is a reason, they are fighting their current opponent, what it would mean to win/lose, letting people clearly know the name of finisher's...all of that stuff. It goes a long way into drawing in those who would look away because they have nothing attaching them to the performers.

This is excellent news. I do hope this comes along with subtitled promos as well, but that might be asking for a bit much.

Oh boy, I wonder who will be doing the English PBP. If it's some random Americans, it could be hilarious hearing them pronounce the names. If it's actual japanese people doing the English, it could also be hilarious. I've seen plenty of Japanese who speak good English (actors and musicians), but most Japanese speak English very...uhh, roughly. I'm not being a dick, either, the languages are just very, VERY different and it's hard to master both.

Outright bad announcing can ruin a lot. Just look at the Teacher in WWE. He ruined that one Royal Rumble and Shawn Michaels' last match.

And I doubt it'll be decent or better because wrestling commentary rarely is. Like if you know Japanese the Samurai TV commentary is pretty shit I'm told. Same with AAA and CMLL if you know Spanish. Fucking Konnan is the AAA booker and says his show's commentary is shit.

Really? I wouldn't. Loud Booker T, and loud Lawler are unforgivable over the St. Louis Rumble. I much prefer the 40 man Rumble with Teach. One big reason, I wish WWE would let you turn off the commentary on the Blu-Rays you purchase.

I'd be interested in watching a Japanese show with English commentary once for the novelty and that's probably it. The various quirks and calling cards of Japanese announcing is part of what makes it what it is.

Passion is that what that horseshit was called? It doesn't matter what his name is because he fucking sucked.

Yeah, i love the Japanese commentary. Plus, it's awesome for someone like me who's learning the language, but isn't used to hearing it spoken so quickly and so casually. TV dialogue and conversational Japanese are such different animals that it's sort of pretty damn amazing.

Listen anyone who calls Hogan a Nigga, will forever have my love. He should not be at the broadcast desk though.

But back on point. I do hope they invest some time, and get someone who can convey some passion about the product. And someone who isn't an annoying twat. That might be a hard find though.

We at PWInsider have been informed that the English commentary team for the upcoming iPPVs have been selected. Long time Fight Network commentator Mauro Ranallo will join forces with former WWE employee Matt Striker to call the action.
And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority

Please don't derail this super important news with the same fucking whining.

While Frosty obviously doesn't love Striker, this is still a big deal. Ranallo and Striker are probably the two biggest names that any promotion could have access to. New Japan is taking this very seriously.

Which just proves my point that anyone bitching about not having English commentary is fucking idiot since if that is the cream of the crop then the crop is diseased.

That's incredibly close minded. Whether the commentary blows or not, (and everyone has very different perceptions about what is good and what isn't,) the single biggest thing keeping American fans away from Japanese wrestling is the language barrier. When exposed to context, most fans get interested very quickly. So while you or I may prefer the original thing, it's incredibly great to give other people the option to understand what is going on without having to spend years building a knowledge base to find out what is going on.

FInally, watching Japanese wrestling doesn't have to actively inconvinience people, and if I see one more member of the squad of pretentious puro fuckheads who have spent 20 years looking down on the rest of the fandom complaining because New Japan is letting the unwashed masses into the community, I'm going to fucking spit. This isn't aimed at you specifically, but seriously. There isn't one fucking thing wrong with this. It has a lot of people excited. And my goal is just to get the word out so as many people can enjoy it as possible.

No one new is going to buy this. It was just a way to brush people off when they told them to check out Japanese wrestling. There is no way in the world I am watching a show commentated by this two. I hope to God I can figure out how to order on Nico Nico outside Japan because apparently there is a way.

I'm not going to play the hot and cold hyperbole game with you. Obviously new people are going to watch, I know several who have pre ordered the next show and are spreading the word. You don't have to watch the show with these two on it you know full well that torrent sites will carry an original Japanese version inside of a week even if that isn't an up front option. This news is nothing but positive.

The first two of these show are on Samurai TV so they'll be up in Japanese, but I would not be so sure of the actual PPV. If it is only offered on UStream in english then that route is fucked.

i would also be pretty upset if the only way these show were coming to us now was with this english commentary team. if people dont like watching wrestling with foreign commentary then it's cool that they have this avenue open to them but i like my japanese wrestling with overly excited, screaming japanese commentary dammit.

The issue to me is not so much Japanese vs English as it is these two people being wretched at PBP and Color Commentary. I'd take Sean Mooney and Lord Al Hayes over these two and Lord Al is dead.

I see no option on UStream to differentiate the languages. I'll leave it at this. If in the end the only way to watch it is with these two dribbling morons droning on making it an unbearable experience then I'll have to just tap out on New Japan altogether.

Looking forward to this gents, I'm surprised NJ haven't taken advantage of this given that there's already many nerdy whiteboys everywhere who go to great lengths to learn Japanese to get into the product and remain heavily invested into it. Not that WWE's cack at the moment, but this would be a fantastic alternative to check out.

I think it can absolutely fill that "WWE Alternative" void that TNA has failed at in recent years.

wow I see i'm late to this party. Also see it wasn't true about Stryker and Renallo being the announce team? just curious though, why all the hate for Renallo? The guy knows the business, he brings great enthusiasm and has a high reverence for many of the legends in Japan. He spent a lot of time in Japan working for diff wrestling orgs and Pride FC. He knows a lot about the Japanese culture, probably more so than any of us with the exception of those living in Japan, and most of all he's truelly respectful of it.

So I watched a bunch of the NJPW vs. Shooters stuff from the early 2000s today. The long term booking of that might have been disastrous but a lot of that stuff was totally fucking awesome and the crowd went nuts for it. Hashimoto/Iizuka vs. Ogawa/Murakami from the 2000 January Dome show is amazing and Ogawa/Hashimoto at another big show that year in I think July is a pro wrestling spectacle for the ages. The 2002 Murakami/Nagata title match is also fantastic and Murakami is nuts in that match, punching the referee and licking Nagata's blood off his hand. That whole era might have killed business for a decade but it made some damn good TV.

The matches themselves were never the problem; it was the subsequent burying of any native talent with charisma in favor of shoot fighters of which only one or two ever truly got over. And as great as the subsequent Ogawa/Hashimoto matches were, I was never able to get into them due to that stunt Inoki and Ogawa pulled on Hashimoto for absolutely no reason at all.

New Japan still has World Pro Wrestling on TV Asahi at some ungodly time of night or morning on a Saturday. Their full PPVs air on some offshoot of TV Asahi a month or so after the fact. They also have a show on BS Asahi which is Asahi's satellite channel. Plus Samurai TV.

Just realized Benjamin has yet to hold any gold in NJPW, and was actually a bit surprised. With this recent run of matches he's been on, I wouldn't doubt he'd end up with the IC or NEVER Title by the end of next year.

The Yoshi-Hashi push has begun. He beat Yujiro and challenged him to a NEVER Title match, then challenged Gallows and Anderson to a tag title match with Okada as his partner.

Don't know if people talked about this when it happened but I just heard this little Meltzer interview with Bryan. Cool to here him say Shinskay is his favourite wrestler to watch (and a favourite of Bray Wyatt's!), that he had a untelevised match with Minoru Suzuki that was one of the best of his career (annoying) and that Yuji Nagata might be the best he's ever wrestled.

I know it's not exactly pro wrestling news, but since he is a NJPW wrestler. it's really interesting to see that Kazushi Sakuraba will be facing Renzo Gracie again in a Grappling only fight at Metamoris 5, GJJ/BJJ vs Catch Wrestling aka Pro Wrestling's origins.

Tanahashi and Makabe have formed an alliance with Shibata and Goto to rebuild Sekigun in the face of Bullet Club, Chaos, and Suzukigun. I guess regular Tanahashi tag partners Captain New Japan and the Time Splitters are in there too.

That's verrry interesting. Tension between Tanahashi and Shibata is built in. This must be the thing that Goto "talked Shibata into against his will".

Strong Style Spirit updates to end

It’s with tear in my eye (™ Ric Flair) that I type this message. And it’s a long one so indulge me.

They say all good things must come to an end, but for a long time I wanted to prove that wrong with Strong Style Spirit and keep it going until I was old and grey.

Unfortunately the time has come where I feel I have to stop updating the site. It may sound silly but this is one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made because this site has been open for 13 1/2 years, not far off half my life. Before that I ran another website that also had Japanese wrestling news and before even that I would post tidbits on RSPW (Usenet).

When something becomes so embedded in your routine for so long, it is very hard to let go of. But time has passed and with each year other things demand more time. These things weren’t a hassle when I started SSS as a teenager. SSS doesn’t provide any income and never really has (most went to hosting costs or buying wrestling DVDs), nor have I ever wanted to monetize it because I’ve run this site out of love for what it covers and to give honest coverage.

For a few years now it has been a strain to keep the site going. Those who have been around a long time will remember just how much detail I used to go into, but in recent times I’ve only been able to cover the essentials. This always bothered me because I would pride myself on SSS offering truly in-depth coverage.

And so I have to announce that 2014 has been the final year of updates for Strong Style Spirit.

I debated doing this after the 1/4 Tokyo Dome show, an iconic event on the Japanese calendar, but thought ending coverage before 2015 arrived would offer more closure.

And no, I haven’t lost interest! I still love New Japan and professional wrestling, and always will. From idolising Hulk Hogan as a little boy to discovering the exciting world of Japanese wrestling, it’s been part of my life for many years and always will be. I’ll continue to watch New Japan and other promotions. Perhaps freeing this time will allow me to watch more of it again. I quite fancy going back and watching some 90s stuff…

Also, the site isn’t going away! I’ve secured hosting for the indefinite future and will always try to keep it around in some form as a permanent archive. There is years worth of information here that you can read through at any time. Also, the Strong Style Symphony forums will remain open for anyone wishing to chat about wrestling or other things.

It’s been a great journey for me and in other circumstances I’d keep it going for years and years to come. Who knows, I may win the lottery and retire early, allowing me to resume it some day! I won’t rule out doing an Onita and making a surprise comeback some day so don’t delete your bookmarks.

I think many English-speaking fans of Japanese wrestling who have come and gone will have stopped by puroresufan.com and I’m proud of that. I like to think of this as my small part of internet history.

I’d like to thank everyone who has visited the site. Everyone I’ve met online and chatted with, including former regulars of the #puroresu chatroom (great times!). Those who have done a great service to the scene such as BAHU and Jae. Check out their sites and support any other puroresu sites you can, such as Purolove (a great place to keep up with results).

This has been my project and ends as my project so I’m not looking for someone to run it. The site/domain isn’t actively for sale but if someone made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, I’d think about it.

I’ll still be around on the message boards, more often lurking than posting but still there. If you want to contact me with messages or anything, my email address remains toukonstuart AT gmail DOT com.

I’ll leave you with a picture of the man I have to thank for piquing my interest in puroresu when I bought the WCW Superbrawl II commercial tape in the mid-90s. It took a couple more years for me to start my tape collection but it was the sight of he and Brian Pillman flying around the ring that started my journey into the world of Japanese professional wrestling.

    Strong Style Spirit, 2001-2014

    RIP

El Samurai vs. Shinjiro Otani 6/3/99 is really an unheralded classic that people should try to see. Definitely one of the best juniors matches of the 90s, top 10 for sure.

Get a grip virm. Stay in and park yourself in front of your TV/laptop.

Everyone who likes wrestling should watch this. No excuses anymore. Buy it and fuck the WWE network off.

Yeah try catching one of the 4:30AM ones. Half way through you start asking yourself what the fuck it is you're doing with your life.

I plan on watching live. Already set my day up Saturday so I can sleep in. Got to do year end paperwork that comes in tomorrow anyways so I can just use that as an excuse to stay up late Friday for the sleep in on Saturday. Should work out fine.

And defrost I fucking expect you to be chatting with me whIle this is going on so you can explain all the DragonBall z shit they incorperate.

In fact we need to just organize a live chat for this. Probably be the best chance of you luring in some fresh peeps to join in getting discussion on the boards with your Japanese wrestling love.

I'll try to be up for the live stream, but 1-2am is kinda crazy time to be up.

Defrost, Virm, whoever else, can you please refrain from posting spoilers here or elsewhere until everyone has watch? I hate to be "that guy", but you know most people ain't watchjng it live.

I'll keep whatever I have to say in the main Wrestle Kingdom thread. So obviously avoid that one.
