* In front of a yet another sold out crowd for New Japan, Hiroshi Tanahashi overcame the fierce challenge of CHAOS’ Masato Tanaka in an exciting match to complete his V2 defense, ensuring that he goes into this year’s G1 Climax as champion just like last year. It took close to half an hour for Tanaka’s bold challenge to be put to an end but once again the New Japan ace proved his ability when he hit the High Fly Flow for the win. Tanahashi has now won fifteen IWGP Heavyweight Title matches over two reigns in the last one and a half years.

* The IWGP Intercontinental Title scene was shaken up as in the biggest match in the title’s short history, Shinsuke Nakamura dethroned generation rival Hirooki Goto to become the 4th champion. Although considered a secondary title, this belt now certainly holds more prestige and worth than it did before and Nakamura adds another trophy to his well decorated cabinet.

* The seemingly endless TenKoji vs. Yano & Iizuka feud seemed to find some sort of resolution today as with four referees to avoid yet another non-finish, Tenzan & Kojima defeated the dastardly CHAOS duo in a decision match for the vacant IWGP Tag Team Title. The title was held up last month after a no contest while Yano & Iizuka were champions and New Japan officials deemed them unfit to reign as champions after that, demanding they earn the belts again in a fresh collision with TenKoji. But with four referees ensuring Yano & Iizuka could only bend the rules so much, the now 4-time IWGP Tag Team Champions came out victorious as Kojima sunk Iizuka with a lariat. It’s 13 1/2 years since the popular TenKoji duo first won these belts when they defeated Genichiro Tenryu & Shiro Koshinaka on 1/4/99 at the Tokyo Dome but they are stronger than ever in their latest reunion.

* The IWGP Jr. Tag Team Title is back in CHAOS custody for the first time since Davey Richards & Rocky Romero were forced to vacate the belts in May after Richards couldn’t make a title match and his New Japan stay subsequently ended. Romero has since found a new tag partner in the impressive Alex Koslov and today they scored a huge win over Liger & Tiger Mask, who only won the belts themselves last month. Tiger Mask fell to the Contract Killer, meaning the last three champions have failed to even register one successful defense… a trend the new champions will be hoping to put an end to.

* In a huge upset on the undercard, KUSHIDA surprised the dominant Low Ki with a cradle to defeat the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion in a non-title match. This isn’t what Ki wanted ahead of his upcoming title defense against Kota Ibushi and for KUSHIDA, he will be watching that and could be the first to challenge the winner after today’s result.

Sacremento Wrestling Federation will host two IWGP title matches on their August 26th show at the Butte County Fair as part of a new tie-up with New Japan. Shinsuke Nakamura makes his V1 defense of the IWGP Intercontinental Title against “Old School” Oliver John while Rocky Romero & Alex Koslov make their V1 defense of the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Title against Alex Shelley & AJ Kirsch. New Japan rising star KUSHIDA is also set to challenge for the SWF Heavyweight Title, currently held by Dave Dutra who will be his opponent unless he drops the belt beforehand.

* Kota Ibushi overcame a ferocious and a spirited challenge from KUSHIDA in what proved to be a difficult V1 defense of his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title. After finishing off KUSHIDA with a sit-down Last Ride the champion barely had time to breathe before both Low Ki and Taguchi entered the ring issuing challenges to Ibushi.

* G1 finalist Karl Anderson scored a big win in the semi final tag match as he (teaming with Goto) pinned Nakamura (teaming with Okada), and this looks like it could be leading to a G1 final rematch between Okada and Anderson at Kobe World Hall.

* Despite his apparent knee injury, Tetsuya Naito was OK to wrestle today as he and Tama Tonga faced the NOAH tandem of Marufuji & Yone, with Marufuji pinning Tonga ahead of his title match with Tanahashi later this month.

* K-DOJO star Kengo Mashimo interfered in the fourth match, helping Suzuki Gun which of course K-DOJO founder TAKA Michinoku is part of and now Mashimo looks to have joined. This should lead to participation in New Japan by Mashimo who challenged for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title in the same building seven years ago.

* Wataru Inoue issued a challenge to former tag partner and friend Katsuyori Shibata, along with Kazushi Sakuraba, which would see Wataru and Shibata in the same ring again after a long time.

I can't imagine how that is physically possible; those were literally two of the biggest stars in the history of the company, one of whom was both the founder and one of the biggest wrestling stars EVER.

* The 2,250 fans saw a special main event where Nagata teamed with NOAH star and generation rival Jun Akiyama along with DRAGON GATE’s Masaaki Mochizuki in an “anti-aging” trio. They defeated CHAOS’ Nakamura, Okada & Yujiro with Nagata fittingly ending the match with his backdrop hold on Yujiro. New Japan trueborn and Nagata’s former Team JAPAN faction member Kazuyuki Fujita made a surprise appearance after the match to congratulate Nagata on his 20th anniversary. Nakanishi also appeared so the only Team JAPAN member missing was the enigmatic Kendo Kashin who hasn’t been seen in New Japan for a long time now. 90s star Hiroshi Hase also made an appearance.

* Special guest Akebono was forced to miss the show due to an injury that will keep him out for a while.

New Japan’s NEVER brand presents its NEVER Openweight Title Tournament on 11/15 and 11/19 as recently revealed, with a brand new openweight title up for grabs. Tetsuya Naito was at the recent press conference and was to be the poster boy of the brand but after Yujiro Takahashi sent him to hospital on 10/11 that isn’t happening. The tournament features 16 wrestlers of many varieties, from higher profile heavyweights like Karl Anderson and Masato Tanaka to well known juniors like Ryusuke Taguchi and KUSHIDA to a bunch of K-DOJO and independent wrestlers like Kengo Mashimo (who wrestled Makabe on 9/23 at Kobe World Hall) and Daisuke Sasaki.

Just as interesting as the tournament itself is the news that New Japan will debut its two latest rookies! Takaaki Watanabe, the most recent debutant (last year), faces newcomers Sho Tanaka and Yohei Komatsu over the two shows. Both of these are smaller sized wrestlers which is quite interesting as New Japan traditionally asks for taller guys but these two are definitely below the 180cm height requirement New Japan would ask for not so long ago. New Japan also has a very tall American called Gaylon Summers in the dojo who isn’t far away from debuting. Some info on both of the new kids:

[NJPW News] New Japan had quite a bit of news and information released today, so bear with me as I try to break it all down.

1. Takaaki Kidani announced that he is resigning from his position as chairman of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Kidani wanted to announce this news ahead of time to the public, and nothing will happen until the Shareholders meeting this September.
This is not to be taken a negative things as Kidani seems to be wanting to spend more time working with Bushiroad.
Kidani stated that he has been met with both positive and negative feedback throughout the last year, and it seems the negative is why he has chosen to take a step back from the position. It seems to mainly come with the recent use of Sakuraba and Shibata. It seems Kidani will remain as the active sharehold owner of the promotion, but he wants to step down from the position of power. He will still aid New Japan in the future.

2. New Japan also announced that they will be introducing their own English based website in the near future. Of course with this announcement, I will officially announce that I will more than likely cease to post New Japan related information as their website will be the place to go. There is no reason for me to just copy and paste any information that they have posted originally. I am not, and never will be a copy and paste site. If there is no reason for translations needed them I my work is done with NJPW. Granted, we will see what kind of information they plan on providing first before I ultimately make that decision.
No word as of yet to when they will introduce the official English based website, but they also announced that a Spanish version is also in the works.



3. With the announcement of the new sites, New Japan also pointed out to some info to the global expansion. Many different places were mentioned from Europe, Mexico, Korea, Latin America, and Italy to name a few, but it seems they are really wanting to push towards a true global expansion. Nakamura was also on hand as the reigning IWGP Intercontinental Champion and stated that is willing to defend the belt anywhere.



4. There was an announcement that Bushiroad will be creating their own Tokusatsu (Superhero) show in the near future, along with a new card game called “Bound Monsters”. It seems that many New Japan wrestlers will be involved in this new venture that will see production beginning this spring. From what I gather Okada will be one of the early co-stars for the show. If someone has any more information on this please feel free to contact me. *information will be below.

5. New Japan announced the main upcoming big events that will be taking place in the future.
Bushiroad will be releasing a new update to the KOPW card game with the title of “INVASION ATTACK” this Spring on April 14th. Along with this, they will also be hosting an event under the same name on April 7th called “INVASION ATTACK” at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. Minoru Suzuki, Yoshihiro Takayama, Masakatsu Funaki, Akebono, and Kazushi Sakuraba were names that have been mentioned to be apart of the new set, and it could be an early indication that they could be involved on the show as well.
Wrestling Dontaku will follow suit on May 3rd, and then DOMINION in June as the main PPV’s announced at this time. The G1 CLIMAX returns again this year with 2 announced dates, at this time, at the Ryogoku Kokugikan on August 10th and 11th.


Then they also announced that “WRESTLE KINGDOM VIII” will be held next year.

I really am hugely excited about New Japan's continued growth all over the place, and I'm even more glad to hear that their money man is just giving up day to day control and not pulling out altogether.

That is the New Japan Observer Award haul for 2012.

That post made me finally get around to watching the match. Pretty goddamn amazing. Loved it.

Not sure how many STARS I'd give it, but it's probably the best match I've seen from 2012. Granted, I haven't seen many.

My favorite thing about the match was Tanahashi high fly flowing Suzuki's leg, because Suzuki was sitting upright. I love the psychology of doing your off the top rope finisher onto someone's limb for insane damage to it, but 99% of the time they could just.. you know.. hit the finisher normally. As a finisher. And like.. win the match. But Tanahashi didn't choose the leg over the body. He hit the leg because it was the only thing he could hit and it made sense.

Loved the insane amounts of slapping as well.

Absolutely! That's New Japan's biggest show of the year, and is being lauded as one of the best wrestling shows of all time. It has familiar faces like MVP, Shelton Benjamin and Low Ki, and the main event is the biggest feud of the year. Go for it.

Yeah, a lot of people have trouble with that. You'll find out pretty quickly if it bothers you too much to get into things. But the wrestling does speak for itself, and the promo videos are very good at giving you the general idea of things even if you don't know the words.

I've been doing some catch-up on NJPW since I haven't watched much since the middle of last year. Saw Wrestle Kingdom, then I just finished watching Dominion a few days ago and am now going through Kizuna Road Day 2(watched the couple matches from Day 1 outside the main event that I really wanna see). Next, I'm going through the important shows of G1 Climax, hopefully in time to be on time with the final. I'd order the iPPV, but I won't have 30 bucks to spare on short notice.

Anyway, from there I plan on keeping up with everything, but are there any other shows between WK and Dominion that I should take my time out to watch? I know Dontaku was the start of the Goto/Shibata thing, but unless the match is the best of the three, I'm not bothered going back, but if there's anything definitely worth, then I'll gladly go back.
