Icarus on netflix. Starts off as a personal doping journey by an amateur cyclist and turns into absolute madness surrounding the Russian state sponsored doping scandal. Incredible

Viceland did a show on Bam Margera and where he is now. Worth a watch.

    Reviewing this for Big Picture Magazine;

Another excellent documentary picked up by Dogwoof. It's well worth a watch for anyone interested in Prison documentaries, or anything to do with male psychology.

Strong Island on Netflix is good too. Well portrayed, very upsetting at times. Another solid quest for justice style documentary from Netflix.

That's like something out of a horror movie. Genuinely disturbing.

I just finished Ken Burns' Vietnam documentary. Amazing, as usual. 20 hours long almost split up into 10 episodes but it so much explains the current situation in the US right now.

It Is Not Yet Dark on Netflix is touching. I was sad to see when I Googled Simon after watching he passed away only a few weeks ago. So glad he got to make his film and he lived a very full life despite his disease.

I just finished Chapter Six, the episode mostly based around the Tet Offensive. This and Blue Planet are two of the best things on TV at the moment.

I'm also looking forward to this out next Friday

Watched Weiner the other night too. Nuts how someone could be so geared towards such great things and just fuck it up so quickly and easily.

    Meth Storm

Fucking hell. I couldn't imagine a deeper pit of despair than Arkansas. This was a scary look into what life is really like when you submit to meth, and I couldn't help but feel blessed with my current situation. Life can suck sometimes, but at least I'm not a half-witted meth head without any sort of education or direction in life. You're not a person anymore when you allow the cycle of acquiring/selling/using crystal... you're a zombie. Everybody's an overweight hick living in a rancid trailer in a dying ass town in the middle of goddamn Arkansas. It's shot and edited very tightly, switching perspectives between a family (if you can call it that) and the DEA investigating the area's meth problem. It leaves a feeling of absolute hopelessness. No end in sight.

I had to stop watching for a day out of frustration at the mom denying her responsibility when questioned about her kids becoming users themselves. It just pissed me off that she can sit there chugging her Dr. Pepper and say "I dunno, maybe I had some part in them using drugs but uhh I dunno." Like I get these people are caught in the middle of something, but look at the state of them. The mom's miles passed being a diabetic, her kids are sub-intellectual and borderline retarded, and she's going to church? She's there to greet her family every time they walk out of prison, but she does nothing to make sure they stay out. Nope. Nobody wants help because they have no concept of needing help. Life centers around the meth.

It's depressing... it's scary... and this doc nails it. Don't do drugs and don't go to Arkansas.

It's not just meth its addiction in any form. A high percentage of the meth addicts if they recover will end up with another form of addiction, it could be booze or another drug but it could be gambling or sex. If you think this is sad go and have a read about Fentanyl, jesus that is even more scary and sad.

Cheers for linking this I'll be watching as meth is not a popular drug in the UK so an insight into this world is interesting.

This is on Netflix at the moment. Disturbing, but very well put together documentary. Seems quite timely given the individual, their motivation and the events that transpired - lots of unnerving parallels to present day.

Yes sir. Watched this the other night, and while I have vivid memories of the news coverage as a kid... it's still eerie to revisit the story. Also agree about the parallels. Makes one wonder where the hell we're going to be as a country in the next 10-20 years. Religion... patriotism... it's just fucking poison.

Caught the Eric Clapton documentary on Showtime over the weekend. Very interesting. I'm not a huge Clapton fan by any stretch but I do enjoy his music. Also, I just finished reading a biography of Duane Allman in which his interactions with Clapton were detailed so it was cool to see it from the Clapton's side as well.

LA '92 is on Netflix in the UK. Watched this last night and it's great. Just show's how we are doomed to continually repeat ourselves.

The entire thing is on YouTube too:

Thought there wasn't a thread for documentaries but there is so fuck my other thread I tried to start.

A lady who works with me turned me on to one of THE greatest documentaries I've ever seen in 36+ on Earth.

King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters

Within 2 weeks of her telling me about it, I've watched this 4 times. It's only about 80 minutes but it's great and anyone who has seen the movie "Pixels" is going to see exactly where they got the plot from.

It's also funny than you can watch it for free but then right below it says you can rent it for $2.99 lol. So enjoy my brothers and sisters, the story of Billy Mitchell and his world record Donkey Kong score being challenged by Seattle's own Steve Wiebe.

Billy Mitchell is the fucking man. I don't think I've ever seen a real life heel before. That thing with the tie is incredible.

"If you don't know, you're not looking hard enough"
    "T-I-E?"

I reckon the cameraman was on a wind up there.

Yep not really a shocker as my son and I both had been skeptical of that score in the movie especially.

That dude had to feel so dumb...TIE?

I'll say this, at first I was like fuck this Steve guy just coming off the streets with his OCD trying to break this man's record. But within 10-15 minutes I was like man this Billy Mitchell is one of those image guys and says weird shit. Plus that Brian Kuh fuck...what a goon.

Anyone watching Mark Kermode’s Secrets of Cinema? It’s on BBC4 and the iPlayer. Tonight’s episode was about heist movies - last week was rom-coms and next week is coming-of-age movies. It looks at all the recurring themes and tropes throughout the genre with loads of footage. It’s helping me build a list of films that I want to check out,

It’s well worth checking out. Last night was coming-of-age films and then the series is finishing with sci-fi and horror. Kermode is in his element and it’s just a refreshingly enthusiastic look at the genres.

Adrian Chiles - Drinkers Like Me

a documentary that follows Adrian Chiles as he goes about his usual drinking routine or checks out how much other people regularly drink and explores the casual alcohol addiction (without physical dependence or being considered an alcoholic).

i feel like the UK folk on here might particularly enjoy this.

I love Lynyrd Skynyrd's music so I was excited when I heard about this. It was done very well and was pretty interesting. Not a whole lot of new stuff in terms of how the band formed and then got famous but I did enjoy hearing from the surviving members. My wife, on the other hand, was fascinated by the entire film because she didn't know much of the story.

Showtime did a documentary on Head from Korn. It was pretty good and very eye-opening about what he went through during his worst times.

    Leaving Neverland.

After watching this, I'm still no closer or farther away from knowing for certain if MJ was a pedophile. I think he was definitely severely fucked up and maybe did questionable things... but I'm 60/40 about it, mostly thinking he did do it. As for the doc, this was bad. Very bad.

I think the director botched this doc by only interviewing a select few people and not others that should have been interviewed. The only interviews that really matter are the two dudes and their moms... the rest I felt were nothing but filler. The sister and brother interviews didn't add anything at all to the overall story we were there for. The grandmother, the wife? They had nothing.

There are also just some other portions that make me look sideways at this. The mothers were totally robotic when talking about MJ w/ their kids. No anger. No dread. No sadness. They're talking about their kids spending the night w/ this guy that probably sexually abused them and they look like they're talking about a stroll in the park. Just odd. The whole thing w/ the moms is odd.

And it takes forever for things to actually start getting to the actual abuse. I know it's what the director was aiming for, but I just didn't care about the families backstory. I don't want to dwell on where they came from, the father's bipolar disorder, the whole story before they met MJ, etc. Where the director fucked up was not making this a more widespread investigation doc, instead they just made is totally about these two dudes. They should have been 2 chapters in the story. Not the whole story.

What probably did happen to these men is just horrible though. I can't imagine what hey may have had to live w/ in their heads, and I think they've been jipped by this shitty doc. It was supposed to blow the doors open, but instead it really didn't have much to give us. And it was 4 hours long.

Bad documentary. MJ was most likely a fucked up dude that fucked kids... but this doc did nothing to prove it.

Finally got my hands on it. Brilliant storytelling. First reveal is predictable, but it's just the tip of the iceberg.

    Mommy Dead And Dearest...

Jesus, just happened to watch this the other day through boredom, Didn't know the story and just saw the description on sky about the daughter killing the mother. So initially of course I was thinking i'm going to end up hating this ungrateful bitches guts but by the end (while not condoning murder of course) I felt for Gypsy.

Anyone who hasnt watched check it out, Anyone that has tell me your thoughts, Because it filled me with rage...against a murder victim.

There's the TV show called The Act too which was met with critical acclaim. Worth seeking out.

I feel for her, I feel for all involved, it's just a totally toxic situation.

Oscar nominated, Sundance Film Festival winning documentary, "Minding The Gap" is now on iPlayer. Do yourself a favour and find a way to watch it. It's pretty incredible.

Is it a crime show (based on real events) or some kind of mockumentary? I just saw it on my feed last night

It's a real documentary about a guy who filmed himself killing two cats and put the video on the internet. But that's just the starting point, it develops significantly from that point on. There are only three hour-long episodes, I'd massively recommend it.

Only 4 minutes into DFWC and I already can't stand the egotistical lady being interviewed and don't give a shit if any of her cats died.

As a Canadian (and more so someone in Ontario) you'll remember the case. Fucked up. Can't say I'm a fan of giving that guy any notoriety.

Don't F With Cats left me speechless when it was over. Can't believe I'd never heard of this story before.

Looked into Luka's current situation and he married a fellow inmate 2 years ago. Sounds like he's living as normal and comfortable a life anybody could behind bars. I don't understand why keep this scum alive? If it were up to me, I'd have him dragged out back and plugged in the head. Leave him for the birds.
