I didn't bother going to the Sevilla-Levante game in the end, instead opting to go to a private Flamenco show which made me feel like I was on coach trip.

Went and took a look at the ground on the Sunday though, looked OK it's right next to a shopping mall so there's no real build up to it it's just kind of hidden there.

Is this where we talk about international friendlies?

Anyway, Benzema just got destroyed. I know most of you are watching England but France/Brazil is the only match on TV here and it's been an entertaining first half.

I think he's alright, he didn't come off but he might get subbed out at the beginning of the second half.

EDIT: he's stayed on and just scored in fact

The other night someone mentioned how they were surprised Seedorf was still playing.

Well, Shevchenko has just produced an assist for Kiev to take the lead in Turkey - I keep assuming he'd retired ages ago despite the fact I've seen him score for Kiev. Ahem.

BATE were doing well, then the stream got taken down for copyright and PSG scored. Bloody copyright.

Panamanian player discovers that kicking an owl is no hoot

A Panamanian player, Luís Moreno, has caused an uproar and faces severe punishment after kicking an owl which was lying on the pitch during a Colombian championship match at the weekend. Video footage showed that the bird was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area during the match at Atlético Junior, prompting the referee to stop play.

As the referee and players discussed what to do, the Pereira defender Moreno – apparently impatient over the delay, as his team were losing 2-1 – was seen to kick the bird towards the touchline with his left foot.

"The player should be severely punished for this painful, horrible act of intolerance," Ramón Jesurum, the president of the Colombian league, said in a radio interview. He added that the case would go before the league's disciplinary committee.

Atlético Junior fans chanted "murderer" at the Panamanian player, according to Colombian media. Moreno was also reprimanded by opponents and he apologised after the game.

"I apologise to the fans, it wasn't my intention," he said, as he left the field escorted by radio reporters and police.

Colombian media said the owl had been rescued by ground staff and taken to a vet. Its condition was reported to be serious.

Colombian owl kicked by Panamanian defender Luis Moreno dies of shock

An injured owl that was kicked off the field by a player during a match between Colombian football clubs has died. A veterinarian, Camilo Tapia, said the owl went into shock on Tuesday, after having been taken in for treatment two days earlier.

On Sunday, the owl landed, injured, near the corner of the pitch during a match in Barranquilla between Atlético Junior and Deportivo Pereira. The Panamanian defender Luis Moreno, who plays for Pereira, walked over and kicked the owl about three metres, to get it off the field.

The owl was the Atlético Junior mascot and Moreno later apologised to home fans. Humberto Mendoza, the director of the agency that oversees environmental issues in Barranquilla, said he was investigating possible sanctions against Moreno.

Meanwhile, Moreno says he had been threatened since the incident. "There have been all kinds of things ... on the telephone, everything," he declared in a television interview. "It wasn't my intention to hurt the animal. It's very difficult for me and my family who are in Panama and are afraid about all this."

The player's tearful mother said in an interview in Panama: "I'm very worried, his intention was not to kill the animal."

    These crazy South Americans.

Real Madrid are currently smashing Malaga 7-0. Ronaldo scores a hat trick then subbed himself even though Real had used all three subs. No sign of an injury though.

I saw it up to 3-0 and Malaga were genuine poop. Harald Brattbakk would've scored 5 against them.

"I don't know. It seems like a serious injury. That's the negative note from the game," Mourinho said. "Especially as Ronaldo doesn't just do small things."
Mourinho soon followed up his initial words with more encouraging ones over his star player's health.
"If Cristiano has something it's something minor, it's no drama," Mourinho added.
Ronaldo said he didn't think he will play Sunday against Racing Santander.
    So basically nothing.

What do you mean "subbed himself".

Do you think he overrules mourinho?!

"By the way boss, I've scored a hattrick so I'm coming off now even though you have no subs left"

"Yeah ok no problem, do what you like mate"

Watch it. He scored then did the sub hand gesture and ran off the pitch. Apparently he was injured and I'm sure he would've stayed on if Mourinho told him to. I thought it was mildly amusing, fucking hell lads.

While there's no doubting those stats are very impressive, La Liga is absolutely nothing like what it used to be. It's going more and more like the SPL; a rather boring two-horse race where every other team gets trounced on, barring the odd upset. No wonder they're scoring for fun.

You can't compare it to the SPL at all. Although it is a two horse race most of the time there are still quality teams around such at Valencia, Sevilla, Villareal and Athletico Madrid. I love a bit of Getafe myself.

I can compare it to the SPL, by the fact that it is a rather boring two horse race now. That was my point. Yeah, the quality is all-around better, there's no doubting that, but the two leagues are still very much alike.

The gap is becoming wider and wider between Barcelona and Madrid and the rest of the teams. Gone are the days the likes of Valencia and Deportivo will win La Liga, or even challenge for it. And with Barcelona and Madrid to take an even bigger slice of the TV deal pie, along with their continual Champions League money, the gap will only get even bigger.

Of those teams you mentioned, Sevilla were beaten 6-2 at home by Madrid the other week, Valencia were beaten 6-3 at home by Madrid about a month ago (and it was 6-1 until the last few minutes, when Madrid took off their best players), Atletico Madrid are thirty-nine points off the mark and Villarreal are thirty points off. They might play prettier football, but they just make up the numbers.

Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has followed the example of Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos after he managed to drop the Eredivisie trophy from the top of a bus.

Amateur video taken on Sunday shows the trophy fall backward off the bus, apparently after colliding with overhead tram wires. It was handed back by a fan, to the applause of onlookers.
First there was Ramos, now Stekelenburg has dropped a trophy. Not sure if the video in the link is available to the UK but here it is:

Lille have gone 6 pts clear at the top with 2 games to play. Great achievement for them and it'll be interesting to see how they get on in the CL if they hold onto their players.

One of our ITKs says we're still in for Gervinho. It seems highly unlikely but we're talking to him about a move. I'm not even sure where he'd fit in if Ben Arfa is to play up front but it'd be a great sign of intent.

Ronaldo just hit his 39th league goal of the season.

Both him and Messi have 52 in 54 in all games this season. Mentalf.

After the first three Gold Cup games ended in blow outs (combined 14-0 aggregate), Jamaica & Guatemala ended in a scoreless draw. Sometimes I wish USA played in a more competitively diverse confederation; Mexico or USA has been in like 14 of the 20 Gold Cup final matches, I'm a little jealous when I look at Euros to be honest.

Nevertheless, very excited to see the full US squad tomorrow as they take on Canada. As I don't have FSC at my house, I'll be watching on a Mexican channel. Can't wait for goals.

The best thing Australia ever did from a football perspective is apply to join the AFC. Realistically though, it might have made more sense to combine the AFC and the OFC... and in terms of strength of competition, that might make sense with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. Two tiers like the AFC or 5 groups of 10 or something.

    Five Mexican's fail drug test

    Grant Wahl:
5 Mexico players test positive for banned clenbuterol, out of Gold Cup: Memo Ochoa, Zinha, Maza Rodríguez, Hobbit Bermúdez, Edgar Dueńas.

Don't worry, I've already google searched and these players actually exist and it isn't a wind up. what sort of name is hobbit ffs?

Was anyone else completely unaware that Luis Enrique is now the manager of Roma? Loved him when I was a kid. Him and the De Boer brothers were the best players on some top trumps game I had where the players were drawn as cartoons with big heads, like them little figures you used to be able to buy.

Yeah I saw that, thought it was a bit of a strange appointment considering Ancellotti's availability and Montella's good end to the season. Think they are trying to recreate the Barcelona model as Enrique has worked as head coach with both youth and reserve sides over the last few years. Roma have American owners now as well so looks like there is a bit of money there, Bojan deal is close apparently, first benefit of the Enrique appointment.

Barca have a good deal on Bojan though - Ł10m sale, can buy him back for Ł15m any time before June 2013.

Ancelotti has supposedly been told by Spurs that, with his sabbatical from the game coinciding with Redknapp's last season before becoming England manager, we would love to get him in once Redknapp goes.

I think there relegation works on a rolling three year period. They changed it from the usual (sensible) format a few years ago to keep River Plate in the top flight after they'd finished in the bottom three.

Eight players from the Mexican national team have been sent home in disgrace after allegedly inviting prostitutes into the team's Copa America training camp.

The eight - Jonathan dos Santos, Nestor Vidrio, Javier Cortes, David Cabrera, Nestor Claderon, Israel Jimenez, Jorge Hernandez and Marco Fabian - were dismissed on Tuesday, just hours before the team were due to fly to Argentina for the start of the Copa America from their training base in Ecuador.

They were caught after some members of the squad reported that some personal items, including laptops, iPads, mobile phones and cash, had been stolen from their rooms.

After an investigation, CCTV footage provided by the hotel subsequently showed a member of the Mexican side's staff chaperoning prostitutes into the players' rooms.

"We have videos of the women going into the rooms, brought in by a team manager of the Mexican national side," hotel manager Robert Ramia said.

He then went on to reveal that cleaners had found condoms and discarded room keys in a waste bins in the room of two of the players, Jonathan dos Santos and Nestor Vidrio.

    Great stuff.
