If Marko Hunto wins his UFC debut, how about Hunt/Barry next? That would be something.

Yeah, that would be a pretty sweet fight. Would be a good PPV opening fight cuz you know someone's getting KO'd.

I think that the unified rules definitely favor what a wrestler brings to MMA versus any other form of martial arts. The whole "octagon control" aspect of the judging is very questionable, so you take a guy down and lay on him and do nothing, yeah you "controlled" the fight, but you didn't do anything but hold him down.....The crazy thing is that shit like this is what I hated about the older UFC's, 30 minute grapple fests SUCKED. Jon Fitch is a guy who I want to like cuz of his record, but his style is literally "Win by Decision". He rarely tries to finish a fighter, instead "grinding" out a decision.

Fighters who do "Just Enough" piss me off. Give the yellow card out and "just enough" will vanish. If the majority of MMA fans-smart and casual-agree that seeing a guy laying on another guy doing the bare minimum has to go something needs to change for sure.

Agreed. Maynard/Fitch/Pierce/Couture immediately come to mind as those who might be in trouble if MMA adopts the yellow card system.

I know, people are going to be pissed that I said Randy. But look at his gameplan. His first round gameplan is oftentimes leaning on you against the cage for the first 5 minutes. Congratulations, I spent 1/3 of the fight asleep and you won a round without really doing anything. I'm still pissed he got the decision over Vera.

I don't think Fitch or Couture would be .. you gotta really watch, they're both working the whole time. Throwing little puches and elbows and going for subs on the ground .. laying knees and elbows into the guy against the cage .. I don't think they would get any cards.

Fitch trying to finish? Barely. I can't think of a fight where I actually saw him try to do anything but grapple. If he does try to finish it's a mirage, he'll maybe grab an arm and attempt a submission but he never follows through, maybe he's scared he'll get reversed or some shit idk. That last fight with Thiago he would've been yellow carded like a motherfucker for sure.

Machida is someone who comes to mind who in his first year or 2 would've been given yellow cards, Rashad comes to mind as well in his early fights with the UFC. 2 different styles, one a striker one a wrestler, so there are others that pussy foot-or used to pussy foot around playing to the judging system.

Vera/Couture comes to mind. Not only would Vera win based on damage inflicted/effort to finish but Randy would have lost his entire fight purse due to the 50 or so yellow cards.

10-9 must system must be abolished in MMA. It doesn't work for three round fights.

Then again, I'd get frustrated with unnecessary and unfair yellow cards. I don't remember what specifically was happening, but I was pissed back at UFC on Versus 2 when Herb Dean kept telling Jake Ellenberger to work while he was gnp'ing John Howard.

LOOK AT JOHN HOWARDS FACE! HE WAS WORKING!

After being exposed to Pride 6-7 years ago on Fox Sports, I started to realize as I watched both companies why I liked the judging based on the whole fight rather than the rounds. Some fights I'm like "ok yeah this guy was winning the first round but he was coasting the rest of the way while the other guy was way more active and trying to finish" and the guy who is coastin wins the fight cuz he can "control" the fight by "neutralizing" the opponent by creating a situation where no offense from either side is affective.

This is a huge case for people on the bottom, Jeremy Horn beating Trevor Prangley is really the only fight that comes to mind where the guy on bottom was being more active than the guy on top-and the judges felt the same. Horn even says he was surprised cuz usually the judges give the round to the guy on top.

With the advances in combat sports such as the addition of compu-strike and more and more credible people in the fight community speaking out, it's only a matter of time before the judging is revamped. Not much, but a little. Right now it seems the rules haven't changed over the years due to comfort zone, it's not a horrible system at all, there's just a little too much gray area that causes serious problems.

Rooting for Superman. Can't stand Karo... Bro'.

BJ's take on the 10-9 system for MMA:

“My problem with the scoring system is that you can go out and win the first round by 50 points and lose the second round by two points on a takedown or something and it’s an even fight going to the third round,” said Penn.

“That’s a joke. On another note, what good does a takedown do if I take down Demian Maia? How many points do I get if I mount on James Toney? It’s just ridiculous. I don’t think positions should be any points. The only things that should count as points are power punches and legitimate submission attempts. Add them up at the end of the fight and whoever has the most points or did the most damage wins. That’s how it should be. That 10-9 system doesn’t work.”

I completely agree with him. Points for getting positions is silly, it's what you actually do with it that should count. If moving from half-guard to side mount gets you points then so should putting someone in the Thai clinch or over/under clinch, even if I don't deliver any strikes from there. It's still an advantageous position.

Sounds alot like the Pride rules by the way.

If the fight doesn't finish it should be a draw.

That's what BJ said, it's supposed to be a fight, not a grappling competition.

    -Damage
    -Aggression
    -Effort to finish

That's all we need as judging criteria.

Repeated stalling or reluctance to engage/timidity should be penalized.

My only problem with that is that some guys are just really tough and you're not gonna finish them in 15 minutes. There would be too many draws. .. on the flipside, I guess it could motivate people to finish fights too. It goes both ways really. To me, if you wanna do it like that, I say re-structure the round time while you're at it. Go back to Pride rounds with the 1st round being 10 min and the 2nd and 3rd at 5 minutes. I like the 10 minute 1st round. Its more geared towards a finish IMO.

I disagree. In that case, we'd definitely see more standup, but then we'd see even more stalling from the wrestlers who realize they are outmatched. Well... I can't beat him, so I'll just hold him down until it's over.

Yeah, they would most likely favor a draw over risking getting KTFO.

In ZST any fight that doesn't end in a sub/KO/TKO is ruled a draw. I'm not sure I like it, a fight like Big Country/JDS would be a draw despite JDS using Nelson as a punching bag for the entire match. Same for, say GSP vs. Alves/Fitch/Hardy.

The damage aspect has to be judged intelligently though, it can't be a "look at his face" it has to be who is landing the damaging blows, who's hurting who more, and that might tough to really judge without a bunch of question marks being thrown. Guys who cut easier like Marcus Davis or Forrest Griffin are going to look worse after a 3 round war, but does that mean they took the most damage? No. But, the aggression and effort to finish would definitely be bigger factors than appearance.

I didn't mean cosmetic damage. A body shot can hurt like nothing on earth but won't leave a mark.

Agreed. Luckily the judges don't always get this wrong. The fight that sticks out in my mind the most is Penn vs. GSP I. GSP looked wrecked and BJ walked out without a mark, but the Frenchie took the decision.

I'd like to think the judges they pick are smarter that relying on a few cuts or even a goat's vagina on someone's forehead to decide a winner.

I'd like to get at look at some type of mma judging manaul. All I know about it now is aggression and octagon control.

Well he should be 2-2 .. he didn't deserve that win over Brilz any more than Nog did. That was another split that was split the wrong way. .. and im pretty sure this happend after he lost to Vladdy .. him and Shannon Gugerty both.

Honestly, I would barely bother downloading this event. Probaly just Okami/Belfort because of the title implications.

I would love to see Carwin v. Big Country.

Maybe the UFC felt they were spoiling us and now they're going to throw some mediocre cards out there where it has 2-3 appealing fights and the rest is "Let's hope it looks better than what it does on paper". Some of the upcoming cards I'm really excited about, like Mir/Cro Cop, but after that it's kind of up and down. The good thing about the UFC is that a name can be made overnight with a solid performance against an established fighter, and a fighter that has kind of fallen back can ressurrect in a heartbeat with a killer performance.

I'm betting December will be the biggest show of the year. Jan, Feb, March will be amazing with a lot of rematches set to place in the early part of 2011

Yeah, Carwin/Nelson has been sort of rumored I believe so why not put it on in Oberhausen, that card is in serios need of some CPR...Well, not really, but anything to get people excited to watch it. Especially those of us paying big pretty bucks for tickets, flights and living. :/

Probably but Roy will be gassing just as quickly. Putting it that way, if this fight goes past the first it'll be a boring one.

I'm honestly picking Roy by either decision or sub in the 2nd/3rd. I think they will slug it out in the first, with Carwin gassing worse. They both come out tired for the second and Roy ending up on top and subbing him.

I wouldn't necessarily bet against that but then again Shane is a bit more powerful than JDS and I see it very possibly ending by KO/TKO in the first. Honestly though that would be Shane's best bet, Roy is quite far from a cardio machine but the fight would still probably favor him in rounds 2 and 3.

Either way I hope the rumors are true, I'd be interested in this fight.

Are they taking the piss with that Germany card?! I'd accept Siver vs. a decent fighter (Gomi? Guida?) and Sakara vs. Rivera on the main card along with Belfort vs. Okami, but the rest is shit. I guess Brilz vs. Matsyuchenko is 2 top 20 guys but will most likely be dreadful. Nelson vs. Carwin and something like Swick vs. Ellenberger would help it out a fair bit.

That fight is about right. Slightly below Silva to fight Vera right now, rankings-wise. However, should have some great striking.

Apparently Duffee was released for being a cock. That surprises me because he seemed really humble after breaking that record and being dubbed the next heavyweight prospect.

Definitely an odd fight based on the rankings. Maia is a Top 5-6 guy in the middleweight division. Then again, Kendall is clearly a step up from Mario Miranda. At least people know Kendall and it keeps Maia relevant.

I think it will be interesting to see how Maia deals with Grove's length. Grove is really good at BJJ too.. and those long limbs make it a.) easier for him to do and defend BJJ and b.) harder for others to do BJJ on him .. stand up, I'd have to give to Grove. He's not amazing, but those knees are vicious and Maia hasn't really had to deal with anyone with an attack style like Grove has.

Lol so its come out now that the interview left off part of the text.. it wasn't supposed to read that he was an "ass", but instead it was SUPPOSED to read "asset".

How awesome is that? His manager fucks up and calls him an ass.

Ahahahaha of course it is! He had a lucha mask on too.

    He said he wants LEBEN!

He said he respected what Leben did against Akiyama and even the call-out afterwards. Says Leben showed amazing heart and wants to fight him when he comes back cuz they have the same style.. he then said he would knock him out in the first round. Lol.

He goes on to talk about how awesome Fabricio Werdum is and how Werdum used to beat him up in training.

Wanderlei bet Gorgeous George on a Werdum/Fedor rematch .. if Werdum wins, George owes Wandy $1,000 .. if Fedor wins, Wandy owes George $2,000 and a 2-hour show.

Title shot goes to the winner if George wins. Lauzon won't get a title shot. He lost to Sam Stout before that Rudiger fight .. and beat Jeremy Stephens and Kyle Bradley before that .. not even in the realm of contention. If he beats George AND THEN either avenges the Florian loss or takes out another big name .. then yeah.

They're doing a show in Australia early next year .. if George wins .. he will get the shot .. in Australia. If Lauzon wins, I say see above scenario.

That said, awesome fight. 2 ace grapplers with decent stand-up (edge to George). George has a shot at title contention and Lauzon has a shot to really put his name in the mix for title contention. I can't see him shooting past Dunham, Penn, or Florian (who owns a win over him) with just the George win.

Thiago Silva v. Brandon Vera=Awesome! Not sure who to go with on this one, I'm leaning toward Vera but Thiago is such a beast.

Maia v. Grove=Good fight, very interesting, I think that it gives both guys a solid name to elevate in the rankings. Definitely not an easy fight for either man, Maia's stand up looks better each fight, and Grove, while up and down in his performance, I can see him pulling out the win.

If George S beats Lauzon and gets the winner of Maynard/Edgar, it'd be a solid fight. Would it be a ppv draw? Probably not, but George against Maynard or Edgar would be a tough fight for whoever the champ is at that time.

It may or may not be huge for PPV, but George in Australia going for the belt will be huge there and I think that's more their main goal. I'm sure they'll stack the card like they did last time they went down there.

Seriously, guys .. I reccommend downloading the Wanderlei interview on mmajunkie. Its pretty enjoyable. He's a good interview for sure cuz you can just let him sit back and tell stories. They usually have them up either by the end of the day or by showtime tomorrow (11am central).

Oh I totally agree, but I mean, with or without the title fight having any hometown favorite on the card is going to be huge. Especially in an area that the UFC has only been to once. Truth is they'll probably need a bigger fight to headline the entire event because none of the 3 that would possibly be involved in the LW title fight are going to draw enough ppv buys to warrant the main event slot.

I don't know, George's last fight with Pellegrino was a boring fight, and the Joe Daddy fight...thank God I appreciate the grappling aspect of this sport. I'd like to see George finish Lauzon, get back to his old form, to me it seems like he wasn't really trying to do much more than what was required to win each round against Pellegrino.

Vera/Silva – Interesting fight. Vera isn’t really a contender in my eyes right now but a win over Silva would help. I think Silva wins by UD though.

Maia/Grove – Good match making in my opinion. Maia is above Grove rankings wise but needs both an exciting fight and a name opponent. Grove’s style will fit better with Maia and I’m hopeful that we’ll get a great ground war.

Aussie George vs. Lauzon – At this point, I think George is better than Lauzon in every area. Lauzon may have a strength advantage but that’s about it. Could he win? Sure, anyone can win on any given night but I think this is a way to give George a decent name before naming him the challenger in Australia. It’s always good business to have a local headliner. They’ll be looking to make a star of George for the Australian market, similar to Bisping and GSP.

Edit: Just read Iowan's post. They could always make the Aussie show a Spike TV event.

I would enjoy a Wanderlai/Leben match up. FIREWORKS

Iowan - Are you nuts? Aussie George vs Pellegrino was not a boring fight. George was certainly trying to finish that fight and was in no way just trying to get by. I'll watch it again, but I think you were watching an entirely different fight.

They COULD make it a Spike TV event, but I think the reason they won't is the time zone and they'd lose a lot of money. Same reason they didn't put the one from earlier this year on free t.v.

I am nuts, haven't you paid attention?

Watch it again, I was bored watching it, it was OK, but honestly I get bored sometimes with fights that don't really go anywhere and that's how I felt about that fight...Could be I'm just not a fan of either fighter.

I was counting the time zone as a reason for putting it on Spike. I thought taped PPVs generally did less business. If that is the case, then putting George S on top of the card for the live audience/Australian PPV audience and then airing it on Spike back in NA would seem to make sense to me.

Don't they do that with some of the British based events?

Looks like George cannot lose that bet.

They do yeah, but when they went to Australia last time they were able to do it so the time zones worked out and it aired at the normal PPV time.

LOL .. yeah, I typed that wrong. Wandy is betting on Werdum. George is betting on Fedor.

I think a live ppv is more appealing or a live event in general.

    Yeah, I was shouting ahead.

I'm not just blindly begging for links here, I just can never find a source for fight night live anymore...it's even getting hard to find the UFC PPV for free online. Sickening when you don't have ESPN and you have to work late at night...ensuring that you are definately out of it if you stay up til 3am for the actual live event...

Fuck the UK UFC coverage. Fuck it.

Yeah, UFC has cracked down on streams pretty hard lately. I don't have Showtime, so I can't watch most of the Strikeforce live events. I usually just download them from Piratebay or Demonoid the next morning before I go to work and they're usually done with I get home. Don't know what to tell ya for live streams though, other than p2p4u.net. that's usually my GO-TO site for PPV .. there's a UFC/WWE/Boxing tab.

They just moved live UFC events from free television (Tv4 Sport) to a rather expensive premium channel (Canal+) here in Sweden. Doesn't bother me, I didn't watch the Swedish broadcasts very often when they were free either, staying up 4am - 7am is a proper bitch anyways, especially at my age. :/

Yeah, that's also why I just download shit. I usually work at 4am, so I'm not up to late that often.

I've cancelled my ESPN as all I watch it for is UFC (and some football) and as my Sky+ keeps going wrong and I don't often stay up to watch them live I've ended up downloading them all anyway.

It's only £9 a month but it's really not worth it.

Dana White's tweeted today about UK viewers writing to Sky to get UFC on Sky, if we do that it'll go PPV and there's no way they'll get a decent amount of buys right now.

TUF12 is coming to the UK on Sky Sports 2 on a 6 day delay, there's no way anyone's going to wait 6 days if they really want to see something these days. TV companies really are as thick as pig shit sometimes.

Tell me about it. MU (missouri) football is huge around here, but for whatever reason we don't get all the games on TV. It's dumb cuz whatever they're showing in place of the game won't do even half the ratings as the game would. Fox Sports plays a lot of Big 12 games, but if Texas and/or Oklahoma aren't on national TV .. they're on Fox Sports and Missouri gets bumped .. even though, more people around here would watch the Missouri game (obviously) .. and the whole fuck of it all is that Fox Sports has regional channels so they could just show the MU game here and the Tex/OU games there .. dumb.

Dennis Siver vs. Andre Winner added to UFC 122 .. not the big name fight that this card needs, but still a good fight.

Stop it, you're hurting me man.

I'm honestly hating the 122 card so much it isn't even funny. I'm going to be spending a shitload of money on flight, event tickets, car rental and living expenses for an event I wouldn't even bother to download outside of the 'main event'.

All that money and time for that, I bet they cancel the fight with a day's notice. The you can watch a bunch of guys with negative records go to decisions.

It could be worse; you could be coming all the way to London to see an event that has Mike Pyle on the poster.
