    Red Dead Redemption

Looks like another winner from Rockstar.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afhcpsLIh_4[/ame]

God I hope it plays as good as it looks, I've been waiting for a game like this. I nearly got Gun but heard it was mediocre. This looks ace. Out at the end of April apparently.

Very muchly looking forward to this... I can't remember there being a good Cowboy game ever. There were two out on the old Xbox weren't there? The prequel to this and another one. Both were a bit meh and cartoony. I want realism from this. I want to feel like I'm in Deadwood.

Alf, there was Call Of Juarez which you might be thinking of? And like I say, there was Gun. Not played either but my understanding is that they didn't cut the mustard.

I want what you want, baby. Come on Rockstar, do it for us.

I have one for the Atari 7600 where you dulled against an opponent by moving your dudes up and down and trying to get a shot off.

I hope this is really, really open ended. Hopefully the less linearity there is, the more authentic it will feel.

It does look very interesting and I'll be keeping my eye on it but I'm trying not to get too sucked into the hype. I always regret buying games based on how much hype they're getting.

May is right at the start of my spending ban anyway so if I am buying it it'll be in September or October. You lads can give me your impressions once it's out. I hope there'll be a nice demo.

I enjoyed Red Dead Revolver but found it a bit limited. I hope for a more immersive experience, much like other people have noted already. There is a lot of potential in a Western themed game.

I got fooled by the Call of Juarez trailer, thinking that looked good, but it turned out pretty boring and same old. I rented the PS2 Red Dead, and got to like the last level and had to return it. But with the Rockstar name brings high standards so will be looking forward to reading some reviews before I make my mind up.

can't really be bothered with this. can't stand cowboys, and GTA4 is still sitting there unplayed despite buying it the 1st day, and i quit San Andreas on the last island through boredom. i think this is a tired genre now.

yeah the box is just sitting on my PS3 shelf looking all nice and shiny still. i sometimes try and play the game but just end up turning it off after 5 minutes. GTA3 was probably my favourite surprise hit of all time after Goldeneye, in the sense that i didn't think it would be anything special but turned out to be a life changing 10/10 title. but the series hasn't advanced at all since then. it's the exact same game, every time. RDR looks nice, but it's just GTA missions in the wild west.

Its funny, of all the games I've ever played, GTA is the only one that I ever sit and think that I fancy giving another run through even after all these years. I probably last completed San Andreas 2 or 3 years ago, yet have been thinking about giving it another crack lately. Might do the same with GTA III too, and Vice City.

I tried to play San Andreas again over Christmas but I'm too superficial when it comes to graphics, I switched it off after ten minutes.

Pretty much; Im a teacher so get three glorious months of freedom, I plan on spending quite a bit of time fucking around on a horse and/or in an apocalyptic wasteland while my mates are at work. That and the World Cup. Its going to be glorious!

The ONLY bad thing about this game is my girlfriend is getting it for me for my birthday, which is a week after its released;but on the plus side is one week from end of term.

I presume you guys have read the ign articles? One guy is an outlaw, another is a hero; and the scope of the game seems amazing..

been playing it for the past five hours or so. pretty sure that's long than i ever played the single player in gta4. i'm loving the gunplay and the controls in general, and the voice acting is really top notch. the graphics are wonderful, and the settings you ride through are amazing to look at. throughout the beginning of the game, and his interactions with the npc's, you really get the feel that marston is a reformed man with good intentions who is roped back into this life of crime, and speaking for myself, feel the desire to keep myself from falling into the trap of being an asshole outlaw while playing him. i've accidentally shot or stolen from people that resulted in a bounty on my head where i just restarted from the last save point instead of having my honor drop. specifically one side mission that allows you to choose between the moral high road or the moral low road to get what you want left me feeling bad when i didn't have the funds to do things the right way which left me to resort to taking things by force.

i'm just really loving it right now. i could spend quite a bit of time just roaming around and picking off birds and wild animals to skin.

The hunting aspect has gotten a lot of praise. I'm looking forward to that.

What I loved about Oblivion was the ability to just fuck off and go exploring.

the exploration aspect is probably one of the best things about the game. the hunting, as you mentioned, is fun, and searching for the wild herbs is a decent way to distract yourself. seems there are always random things to do, whether it's sitting at a campsite and listening to the stories of the people who made it or stumbling upon some bandits trying to loot a wagon of innocents. i was just riding through some mountains and got mauled by a fucking cougar out of nowhere.

what aren't you a fan of in the gta games?

you'll be doing lots of 'go here and do stuff' missions, but for some reason, the fact you're in the wild west where everything is open and free makes these kinds of missions seem more natural. it always felt odd to me in gta that in this HUGE bustling city, i'd be doing these silly little fetch errands or escort missions. in this setting, the simpleness of some of the activities fits a lot better, i think.

i think the shooting and cover mechanic works a lot better here than in gta4. i haven't gotten into a ton of gun fights yet, but traveling through a canyon taking down cattle rustlers felt so smooth and satisfying, whereas chasing a dude on a motorcycle and taking him and his gang out in a park felt awkward and clunky.

it sorta feels like a gta game, but i've been far more impressed by it.

I suppose the lawlessness of GTA lends itself to the wild west. In the wild west you can go around shooting people and massacaring rustlers... in a massive city it jars a bit.

    Can't wait.

I think that's what always bored me with the GTA games. I have fun running around blowing shit up and getting killed repeatedly for no real reason, but the missions have always lost me in a heartbeat, and I didn't like how the guns/aiming/whatever controlled.

I loved Assassin's Creed II, which has the open world structure, somewhat repetitive combat, beautiful scenery, a story I didn't really care about and a number of missions that were fairly pointless. Then again, free running is fucking brilliant.

So I guess if it's more AssCreed II/less GTA, the chances of me liking it will be much higher.

i've never played AC, so i can't tell you how close the two are, but i can say that i haven't been bored or uninterested in any of the missions i've done thus far in the game and am looking forward to getting back to the game, which i can't say the same for with any of the gta games outside of III.

just seen on a few forums some comparisons and the PS3 version is fucking bollocks compared to the Xbox one add that to alot of people saying the control is woeful i'm glad glad i cancelled my preorder now. gutted to say it looks like a PS2 game in alot of the shots. *i'm sure it'll still be a good game, just disappointing by rockstar to serve up a bad port*

I think you're overstating things on the graphics front. I don't think the game is going to look like a PS2 game, but when I get it I'll let you know.

Some initial impressions. The controls are a little awkward at first, and take a little getting used to. The graphics are great. Maybe not as beautiful as Final Fantasy XIII was, but for a sandbox open world game, they're amazing. It's certainly shaping up to be a must have game, for casual or hardcore alike.

i know i can be an exaggerator at times but it really does look like a PS2 game in alot of the shots i've seen. gutted as i was looking forward to playing it over the last few weeks. even in the good shots it looks much worse than the Xbox version. pretty poor showing from Rockstar to deliver a game that different on a machine capable of more power than the Xbox. lack of talent to develop on PS3 or just laziness one or the other.

Well people who have gotten the game and are pixel counters have shown that there is a difference. It's something like 720p on the 360 and 640 something on the PS3.

yup. i defy anyone to tell me this shot doesn't look like a PS2 game: http://img8.abload.de/img/red_dead_r...ion_rey5dd.jpg

if a Slim xbox really does comes out this year, and it's cheap i may get one for this and mass effect 2 and a small handful of other stuff over the years like the Fable series. no way i'm paying to play a port that poor though. even though i'm sure the game would still be very good as rockstar games are always above average, it's the principle of paying a lazy developer.

    I'm guessing you haven't played a PS2 game in a while...

And mate, as if you are throw a hissy about the graphics being marginally less good. After you've been playing a while you won't notice anyway. And... I know this sounds mental... how about how judging how the game actually plays? Rather than shitting yourself over how it looks?

I'm sure it'll be fine and dandy.

several of the 'swan song' games on the PS2 that look better than that shot there i posted. something like god of war 2, odin sphere or persona 3 and 4. i'm playing monster hunter tri on the wii at the moment and that looks alot better than some of those red dead shots.

haven't done any of the online matches like deathmatch or capture the flag, but did mess about in the free roam mode, which puts up to 16 individual players into the single player world with each other as well as all the npc's, and let's them do whatever they want, from killing each other to killing bandits and innocents to doing all the hunting aspects and what have you in order to level up your character. seems like it could be great fun.

for fuck's sake. 'a port that poor?' you're blowing it out of proportion based on crappy screenshots of the game. i've got the ps3 version and am playing on a fairly old HD television and it looks breathtaking. if you're that hung up on graphics that you're willing to keep yourself from playing the game until some unknown date in the future, i really feel sorry for you, cause you're missing out on it for absolutely zero reason.

You can pre-order it at Tesco Entertainment for £27.37, which is a good £8 or so cheaper than anywhere else. You'll have to order it before tomorrow afternoon, though. Tesco have said that's the cut off point if you want it delivered for Friday.

Use voucher code 'FTSL15-1' to knock 15% off, which brings it down to £29.75, then if you like you can go through Quidco and it'll knock a further £2.38 off. That's what I've done

I simply can not wait for this game. Looks absolutely superb. I've just been reading a number or reviews, notably from IGN and 1UP, and I'm now even more hyped.

I played this for a couple hours last night. It's pretty cool so far... and I can only imagine it will get better as the stories progress. The only thing I don't like so far is the fast travel system. You have to set up a campsite in order to get it to work. And I just wish there was a "wait" option in order to advance time. I did a mission during the night time which was almost impossible because it involved searching for snipers. They were very difficult to see, and I had to rely on auto-aim plus the Marshall yelling "Nice shot, pardner!"

Overall, this game has a ton of potential. You can pick up side missions, store them in your journal, and complete them at your leisure. Duels are awesome. Cheating at poker is awesome. Saving the damsel in distress is awesome. It's fun being in the wild west.

I remember liking the original game but feeling it was a bit limited. From what I'm reading, it sounds like this game has solved that problem.

I have a free rental voucher at home, I'm just worried that I'll want to go out and buy it afterward and I really don't have the money right now...

    Enjoying it so far.

I went online last night and left my character out in the hills while I chatted on AIM... within minutes a pack of coyotes ran up on me trying to eat me for dinner.

Needless to say, I left four of them dead and chased another away.

It was a really cool moment that I was not expecting. The world certainly has a feel of 'anything can happen' to it.

You can cheat if you get the Elegant Suit from the tailor in the N.E. town by the lake. It's difficult to cheat effectively, but I guess that's a lot like real life. Also, if you get caught, you have to duel.

Is it just me or does the "press B to look at the current target" thing not work at all? In GTA when you held B the whole camera shifted and stared at the target. In this one, the camera very very very faintly just moves a tiny bit

I just had an epic duel in a thunderstorm. Lovely it was. The storms in this game are ace.

    I love the huge sky...

The graphics can be MEH at times, especially the textures of clothing, hair etc etc etc.

I like all the sidequests and the sharpshooter and survivalist thingies. The main missions have been a bit meh so far.

    My horse got killed

    Cougars are fucking lethal.

All the betting games etc are cool too.

    You can't lasso a dog...

I want a better revolver but can;t find one.

It works for me. But I tend to have a hard time (PS3) holding O to keep the camera turned, X to keep my horse moving, the right stick to rotate the camera, and L2/R2 to operate the lasso/guns. It's a lot of things to do with only a couple fingers. If I could change anything, it would be the horse controls. I wish you could completely control it with the left stick, with the L3 button being used to spur. It would be more intuitive too... pushing forward would lean yourself forward on the horse more, increasing speed... pulling back on the stick would be like pulling back on the reigns to stop the horse.

At least they didn't make it with sixaxis controls.

I have made about 3000 bucks off cougar and wolf stuff alone. Geez those cougars, kill one, skin it, and another one spawns, hisses, and pounces on me almost immediately.

I would really like the option to skip the skinning animation time.

yeah, some of the animations can get tedious. the skinning one, and when you look through drawers and closets for items. they seem needlessly long, and you gotta watch it each time.

also, for the first couple hours of gameplay, the dead eye mechanic is free range, it seems. then during your first mission with west dickens, it changes and sets up multiple shots just by dragging your reticule over enemies. i couldn't read the explanation and directions for this shit, because i had to pay attention to what was going on in front of me in the game, so i've got no clue how exactly this works. seems cheap as fuck to me, though.

I haven't gotten there but a quick read in the manual shows that's because of the different levels of dead eye. Level 1 is free aim. Level 2 is automatic painting and then Level 3 is manual painting...not sure why you went backwards for level 3.

so i would assume manual painting mean you yourself get to pick the shots instead of just sweeping over targets. that'll be kickass. i wouldn't call it going backwards. part of the fun i was having when first playing was going into dead eye and taking people out on my own. felt way more satisfying and fun that way.

Oh no I agree it'll be more fun, but in terms of "leveling up" it is making more work for yourself.

pretty sure you can go to any of the game markers on the map and join that game type, and it'll put you in with people.

Yeah rank 3 of the Dead Eye let's you manually mark using the right shoulder button up to 5 or 6 times I believe. At least on the Xbox control scheme, I assume it's the same with the PS3. Makes doing trick shots much easier.

I didn't even know I could do deadeye until then.

I had an iffy moment where I tried to get it working during one of the Sheriff's missions where I tried to go dead eye so a hostage wasn't killed... and my dude just looked behing him.

That's what happens when you click the right stick without holding the left trigger. You need to aim in order to activate it.

I got this game for PS3 still in its wrap.

In Just Cause 2, I got 67% completion and 81% of all the trophies. My aim is to finish one sandbox game at a time.
