I really think talent shines through when it comes to WWE, if someone is talented and worthy of being a main eventer they will. That's why I do think Daniel Bryan will be a main eventer at some point in WWE.

If he's gone in a year I'll change my avatar to something fruity

I agree with you, Freak. WWE places importance on more aspects than just in-ring ability. It places importance on marketing, on knowledge, on skill to tell a story, on crowd reactions, and on being good. Plus working well with the folks backstage. I do have a feeling we are going to be seeing here some main eventers for the next (NXT!) 10 years.

    Or read it right here!
WWE NXT rookie Daniel Bryan (formerly Bryan Danielson) appeared on "The B.J. Shea Morning Experience" radio show on 99.9 KISW in Seattle this morning to discuss tonight's WWE NXT debut. You can listen to the interview it's entirety at KISW.com. Here's what Bryan said about:

His Name Change: Well we have to accept the things that are handed down to us, but it is pretty close to my name, you know what I mean? I am comfortable with it and I think it is going to be good. Most people who watch WWE Universe have no idea who I am so they don’t know about what my name was before or anything like that.

To them I’m always going to be known as Daniel Bryan. I think that will be okay. It’s just that the WWE is an enormous corporation and it’s smart for them to have the rights of anybody they put on TV. It doesn’t matter if the person is successful; I’m successful and they own the rights and that helps them and their merchandising and that sort of thing. I don’t think it’s really a big deal; it’s a pretty standard thing."

The Miz Calling Him Boring: "So the deal with The Miz is that that’s how he’s gotten by. He’s very charismatic, he’s gone out there, he’s really good at making people hate him. How I’ve gotten by is a little bit different. I’ve been doing this for over ten years now and what I’ve gotten by and how I made my name is by being excellent in the ring, but that doesn’t mean what he’s saying isn’t partially correct, you know what I mean?

"There is this huge aspect there where for me it’s always been what goes on in the ring. And with the WWE...that’s a big part of it, it’s presenting yourself as a superstar. And when he said I look like an accountant, I kinda do! I don’t watch television, I don’t e-mail. He was asking me, 'What do you do with yourself?' and I said, 'Well, I read!' (Miz responded) 'What? Who reads?' It’s just one of those things where there’s going to be a learning curb there because it’s completely different then anything I’ve every done."

Excellent idea to have Danielson mingle in those spots. WWE might know just what to do wuth him.

I saw his face and the first thing that came to mind was .. how much like Kevin Von Erich he looked like in the facial appearance.

Great opening segment. Miz got him over well and Danielson definitely held his own on the mic. He's been the most hyped up by the WWE and the internet when NXT started, I really hope he keeps up this momentum.

I honestly think WWE is now pretty genius in pairing Daniel Bryan up with Miz. Miz is very over as a heel, and it's a great way to get Daniel Bryan over as a face, by having him going toe to toe with The Miz every week. Nice back and forth between the two there.

wow, he really isn't that good on the mic. he can't even make an angry face or smirk like he's gonna get Miz back. instead he had a stupid smile on his face the entire time after getting slapped. he's really small too. i've never seen him wrestle, but i know of his rep as being good in the ring and horrible on the mic. so far it's holding true. i love how the coaches are in character and not themselves. this show is not what I thought it was going to be. i was expecting something like The Ultimate Fighter.

    Danielson v Jericho?

His first match on WWE Television is against the World Heavyweight Champion, and one of the best guys in the company. Wow.

i hope the rest of the show doesn't suck. Miz and Daniel Bryan is so good that the rest might be really boring in comparison.

I kind of like Tarver. Not sure how he is in the ring, but I like the interview. Nice little promo build for him. Now let's hope he's got some skills.

And now it's time for the best paired group there is...Christian and Heath Slater. They're personalities are so similar, although I could definitely see a Slater / Morrison team-up.

Except for the fact that, as has been mentioned, he couldn't get that stupid smile off his face, like he was extremely nervous.

And I had no clue he was that short, Matt Striker's taller than he is ffs. Goofy goofy bastard.

Darren Young is really John Cena in a wig and too long in the tanning machine.

Seriously, that's what he reminds me of.

But I like how he's coming out all eager and ready to go.

I originally didn't like David Otunga for this show, but after the promo, he's got a great cockiness to him.

How Otunga came to the ring reminds me a lot of how Sonny Siaki used to come to the ring in Deep South Wrestling.

Otunga's isn't bad but every other word out of mouth might be 'I'm marrying Jennifer Hudson'

That might help him though, especially if she shows up. I'm hoping she does.

    That was fast!

It almost looked like Otunga was out of position, and then his hand slipped off Young's chest. But I think it was a screw-up by Otunga.

Nice botched finisher. If you look like Tarzan but wrestle like Jane, is that a good thing? Ortunga can have all the personality in the world, but he has to step through the ropes sometime and not botch a spine buster.

The slam did look weird. That Darren vs. Otunga match was a squash of Darren in my mind. I still dont understand how a person from NXT will get a WWE contract. What are the stipulations?

Honestly, i don't think they've ever told us the 'stipulations' as of yet as to how you continue on through the show.

No, I'm hoping it gives Bryan an opportunity to show his skills in the ring.

Someone must have faith in the "best in the world" if they are giving him the opening segment and then a singles main event match against one of the best wrestlers on the WWE roster and a current world champ who is about to headline WM.

The Miz/Bryan pairing is perfect. The Miz is Bryan's only chance of success.
I'm not disputing that the man can wrestle, but how often does "I can wrestle" translate into success in the WWE? He's further hurt by being severely undersized.

Right, since all Otunga will ever have to offer is botched finishers. It was one match and he's still very green. From what I've seen so far he still has more going for him than Daniel Bryan.

Hi. I am Matthew. I see you are new here. I'd just to give you a little pointer on how these threads work. They are not running chats of what is going on, but a place to discuss the show. Carry on.

i like this show it's pretty neat, im always down for fresh faces, even the shit ones.

Michael Cole: "I'd never heard of Bryan before he got to NXT", guh, because there is no wrestling in the world outside of the WWE. Ridiculous.

The man is 5'10. As someone said earlier, in WWE if you're talented enough, you'll get to the top. People were saying Punk wouldn't make it either.

Discussing the show is what this thread is for. Not really for "they just did this lol" kind of thing. You'll learn the ropes.

I love people making the "people didn't think Punk could do it either and look at him" argument despite Punk and Bryan being polar opposites.

Matthews and Striker were the best commentary team WWE had until they split them up. Those guys made even bad ECW shows worth watching.

Running/chat and discussion of the show is appropriate, but "Jericho is awesome" is really neither of those things. If you elaborated on why as it relates to what he was doing on the show, then your post would have had more purpose.

We generally discourage "Here comes Triple H!", "Undertaker! Woo!", and "Goldust is so freakin' amazing and I love him" type posts (although, I'd let you slide with the Goldust one) that don't actually contribute to the discussion.

Weird show, kinda just seems like ECW, I thought we would get plenty more backstage stuff, instead of house show matches?

Bryan's look is quite rubbish, but he's done nothing wrong tonight, I thought his mic work was fine.

Otunga can talk, I loved his promo, but he botched the finish. Bad start for Young who didn't even get the intro promo. Still I like the potential of the pairing as he gradually gets better to try and turn Punk around.

Nice tag match, as Slater looks very comfortable in-ring and Tarver has good strikes and an amazing look. Still losing in week one aint the best start.

Loved the Jericho/Barrett promo, Jericho basically telling him to wrap it up. Great start from Barrett.

Still dissapointing not all made it onto show one, I think Gabriel and Skip missed out.

Really not sure if this format will work with house show matches and a dead crowd, but lets hope the main event is good

Good show. Tarver is money, Heath is mediocre and needed the win. Otunga/Young match was sloppy as all hell, but CM Punk was awesome. Daniel Bryan was great, opening and closing the show. Good stuff there. Wade Barrett did well enough, he's always good on the mic. And Jericho looked very good tonight too. I look forward to this, except for the crazy cameramen. Let's get some normal cameramen on this show.

It was the first episode. Of course the crowd is going to be dead for these new guys. They have no reason to care yet. Give it a few weeks, let them get more familiar and I think the crowd response will improve. Hopefully the matches will, as well.

Looking forward to watching the show later in the week, sounds like it was pretty interesting and a decent start for NXT.

Granted, it was a somewhat lazy and poor comparsion, given their relative strengths - but the point stands that contrary to some people's bitching, more often then not talent in the WWE is recognised, and Danielson is certainly very talented in the ring. There's a solid foundation there upon which WWE can create a valuable asset.

Daniel Bryan just needs a better haircut and some facial hair. Otherwise he looks like the offspring of Jack Swagger and Chris Nowinski.

Yes but talent doesn't always equate just to what you can do in the ring. In most cases in WWE it takes much more than that.

Plenty of guys can put on a good match but if they don't look the part and have no redeeming qualities in terms of character and being comfortable in front of a typical WWE audience then they're not going to be big WWE stars.

Not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying that I don't see it at all with him.

There's a solid foundation there upon which WWE can create a valuable asset.
Exactly Benoit was small...and not good on the mic and it took time but he ended up huge and would be a no question HOFer if not for the way he went out.

If WWE didn't have faith in Daniel Bryan they would have centered the first episode of NXT completely around him having him open and close the show. Along with looking great against Jericho.

Freak, you got it damn straight. He was also the one the least likely to really screw up, seeing as he is the least rookie-y of the rookies.

Not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying that I don't see it at all with him.
Oh certainly. To be a star you have to be a great character and look like a top guy; and while he doesn't have the best look or the best television skills he does have plenty of time on his hands and the environment in which to improve. It obviously depends a lot on his own dedication, but with the WWE's attention I think he could well improve enough to be taken seriously as a big player in a few years time.

    Edit - Yeah, Freak.

If WWE actually believed he had no charisma then I really doubt he'd even be getting this chance, much less would they bring him up and make a point to make fun of it. Either they know he has charisma or they know his in ring work will be enough. Personally I think it's a mix of both

Tarver I believe agree has the look and actually looked solid in the ring, gave what I thought was the best "interview". I don't like the "knockout" gimmick, but we'll see if they adjust him: B+

Otunga: Botched move REALLY hurt, liked the cocky attitude Otunga had, but comparing himself to Obama and the Rock? Solid look, but has to have better matches to move up: B- (for now)

Young: Believe it or not, to me Young was actually the _Best_ at playing the charisma role, even out doing Heath, even without the interview. He played the role of the rookie perfectly, he was trying to get Punk to give him advice multiple times. Needs to be given a better match to judge his wrestling, although it didn't look like he was selling the clotheslines too well from Otunga: B (could go up or down based on later matches)

Heath: I was seeing a Brian Kendrick the Second every time I watched Heath, and that's not a good thing. The charisma seemd forced, and seen it before.. As stated, he needed the win, but i honestly dont' seeing him as a big force in the 'big leagues' if he ever gets called up. C

Barrett: Gets an Incomplete until he gets some wrestling time. He's almost too much of a clone of Regal to stand out though.

Bryan: Gotta learn to lose that smile.. Charisma-wise, he was extremely lacking overall, but I coudl see him going verbally toe-to-toe with others. He definitely makes up for it in the Wrestling world A-

And I gotta side with Matthews in the announce booth, you can't just "ignore" what's out there on video for any guy when you're talking about his wrestling skill.

I was truly thinking Stryker should have gone along with Matthews on this, instead of towing to the "WWE superstars deserve the respect" route that Cole was going with.. and Cole just needed to shut up (But I say that anyway about Cole)

WWE also puts a strong emphasis on in-ring story telling, and few can do it as well as Danielson. He has loads of personality and can pull fans into his matches, as evidenced by tonight.
A lot of people often bash independent wrestling companies and devalue talent because of their low production quality and low attendance numbers. As a 25 year fan of WWE, I had the same opinion. That was until I watched an ROH DVD (Best of Samoa Joe) and realized that the type of wrestling I enjoyed (my favorite wrestlers were Flair, Michaels, Angle, Benoit, Guerrero, Hart) could be seen in other places besides WWE.
I enjoy the "Drama' aspect of wrestling and think the Miz is a great entertainer. I mentioned some of the best grapplers in the previous paragraph, but some of my best memories also come from watching the Rock, Hogan, and Austin. I also don't like a lot of independent wrestling. A lot of the matches I have watched have wrestlers just "doing moves," seemingly without any psychology or consequences for each move. A Danielson match is the exact opposite of this.
I would recommend all Danielson doubters to watch some of his matches from other promotions (Any match with Kenta, Nigel, or Austin Aries). I can think of very few wrestlers (Angle or Michaels) that has wrestled as many amazing matches in the past few years as Danielson. I'm also open to watching Ortunga's best of DVD if anyone knows where I can find one.

God I hope that Heath isn't the second coming of Kendrick.. That would put me off of him right there and then.

Great show. Enjoyed it, except for the 3 second squash that wasn't really a squash. His name evades memory, but isn't the winner of the squash match formerly on I love New York?

    Daniel was money all around.

Side note - what the fuck was with the camera angle? Were the ropes spread apart or were we just zoomed in too much? Most of the matches looked disoriented since our camera angle wasn't perpendicular from the ring.
