WWE's press release says that NXT will leave SyFy. It DOES NOT say that NXT is cancelled. See here: http://corporate.wwe.com/news/2010/2010_04_13.jsp.

I think SyFy's call does speak volumes about the nXT program though.

It's a great premise but it needs serious tweaking.

I didn't read all the details, but does any of this shuffling have any basis on SyFy not wanting NXT? That's what you're implying, and I'm just curious if it's true.

There's been no indication yet that SyFy only agreed to take SmackDown if they could get rid of NXT. It's not totally out of the question, but as of now it's not been reported.

There's a segment on NXT tonight about the rookies showing how well they can cut promos.

    Wade Barrett is fucking great.

I wonder how legit all of that was. Most of them seemed pretty surprised by the topics, though I gather Tarver's outburst was planned and I have to think they banked on Wade winning in England. Some of the topics though, even I could've thought of things to say. Passion? Couldn't Daniel have just gone on about all the time he's spent wrestling like he did when this first started? The flower bit I feel like Justin could've ripped on Wade's rose in his jacket, and Skip could've gone on about bubblegum and the other rookies, chewing them up and spitting them out.

Barrett is pretty good on the mic. I'm still not a fan but the guy can talk.

Those other guys were awful! Otunga was the only one out of the rest that knew what he was doing.

I think that was the first time Miz actually gave Bryan some good advice.

Barrett, Otunga, and Sheffield did great in the competition tonight. Sheffield may have strayed off topic, but he got the crowd behind him and showed he can at least get the crowd into the action if he's allowed to speak.

Daniel Bryan was just horrible. I really hope that was something scripted by the writers and not something he put together. He really needs a TON of help with using the microphone. He just looks incredibly goofy and as if he has no idea what a microphone is and what it does.

I liked Strikers mess up and asking Gabriel about his win over Otunga last week. Gabriel was like you talking about the battle royal from a few weeks yeah he cheated.

But yeah Barrett is the fucking man still my favorite.

Don't know how it came across on TV, but let me assure you, watching it live, EVERYTHING about that promo section was a work.

Definitely seemed legit on TV, to me. How did it come across as a work live?

I'm warming to Otunga. He's iffy. Like I said, if he could get the conviction down he'd be much better, but I thought he was good this week and even in his little part on Raw. I'm warming to Skip Darren was surprisingly good tonight. Interesting route with the SES. Bryan was meh. Starting to sour on him. Heath got NO reaction. I really dislike him. And I'll always have a soft spot for Gabriel.

Also, that backstage bit with Miz was great. Miz literally gets better every week. Him literally trying to have some of himself rub off on Bryan was brilliant.

Well its easy to critise because we're not stood in the ring in your underpants infront of several thousand people.

If it was a work then people like Gabriel and Slater must be masters, because they honestly looked lost. Tarver's shirt needs to read RUN LAX, not NXT. I half expected a Konnan run in with Hector Guerrerro.

And Bryan loses in what.. 2-3 minutes? You'd have thought with him wrestling his mentor they'd at least give it 5-6mins with some of their technical backgrounds shown off..... but clearly not!

Oh well, Barrett was always winning that talk-the-talk bit but I bet he gets some cheesey "foreigner" music like Regal always got (although his are quite apt for the royalty aspect!).

It seemed at first that NXT was designed to get Daniel Bryan over as a star, but te booking of him has been very odd. He's yet to win a match, has been basically squashed by Khali, lost quick matches without getting the chance to show what a great technical worker he is and has been ridiculed as somone who toiled in the minor leagues with about 10 internet fans.

Michael Cole is clearly representing the "stuck within the bubble" WWE mindset, which would be okay but I think he goes a bit over the top with his criticism of Bryan. He doesn't have the same problem with, for example, Evan Bourne, who worked on the exact same independent shows as Bryan.

In Michael Cole's eyes, the WWE is a whole new ballgame. It's like coming up from the minor league to the majors. Everything you did back then doesn't matter, you're working with a clean slate. Evan Bourne has adapted to the WWE style, and has pretty much left his indie past behind. Danial Bryan embraces his indie past. In some ways Daniel Bryan's mindset is 'I've got ten years experience, technically, I'm not a rookie.' And he doesn't really carry himself like one. So to someone like Cole who sees the WWE as the big league and everything else as the minors, that angers him, so he lashes out at him.

Loved the show this week. All the matches, while shortish, were vastly entertaining. The promo-contest was hilarious, and I enjoyed it. I suspect that Sheffield doing well in the first part was accidental, because of how terrible his second one was. And Barrett, oh man. What a guy. Good show here.

Still can't believe this show is getting good buzz on these forums. I continue to like the concept but dislike the execution. Low points from this week:

    - No matches for the first 36 minutes
    - The opening three interviews with Striker were painful, as were the 30-second promos
    - The final two matches were way too short, and the endings came from nowhere
    - The Access Hollywood bit was way too long, and worse, it took Otunga out of character. I understand when I'm watching wrestling that the actual people portraying these wrestlers don't sport the same personalities as the wrestlers. But I don't want to see them break character so blatantly on the actual show.
-For the second straight week, the end-of-show angle really didn't have much to do with the actual NXT rookies. Last week it was triumphant Kane. This week is was Luke Gallows getting shunned by the Straight Edge Society. The last impression you should have on the show is of one of the NXT rookies, not a non-NXT Superstar.

The one high point was the interaction between the Superstars and their pros. It was maybe as strong as it has ever been. Miz-Bryan and Punk-Young were especially well-done. I even liked Matt Hardy watching a match on TV with Gabriel and giving him pointers. I'd like to see this angle pushed a little more but this was a good start.

For that matter, I see real promise in just about every one of the rookies. But like the show as a whole, I don't think they are being given enough of a chance to shine.

    I give this a 4/10

Just watched this week's NXT, so here are my thoughts:

-The Talk the Talk contest is a good idea, these guys need as much mic time as they can get. I don't think it was obvious if this was a work or shoot...some of the guys responses seemed legitimately unprepared, and unlike the keg contest, the winner wasn't getting a match so if it had been someone other than Barrett, it wouldn't have effected the show. Anyway, as far as the actual promos:

Bryan - He must either be an idiot, or have been told to go off topic, because a promo on passion should have been easy. What he did made him come off as a dope.

Barrett - He was definitely the star of the segment and cut two great on-topic promos.

Gabriel - seemed legit caught of guard by his topic.

Otunga - His was pretty decent.

    Slater - meh.

Sheffield - I actually thought it was pretty funny he didn't say a thing about rainbows, but it was odd Striker didn't yell at him when he did yell at Bryan for going off-topic. He's got a good batch of catchphrases that I think the crowd could latch onto. His second promo wasn't much, but he seemed confidant and comfortable on the mic overall.

Tarver - I loved him throughout this segment, from the mask, to not talking during his time, to interrupting Young to whatever he said about Britny Spears...it seems like he's starting to lose it and it's make me eager for him to totally flip out.

Young - Thought it was odd he cut a heel promo when I was under the impression he's a face all this time...seemed like a strange thing to do considering he'd want the crowd rooting for him against Gallows later on.

-Christian vs. Barrett was a solid little match. I really liked that Barrett was working Christian's back with a variety of backbreakers, as his finisher slams them right on the back. Jericho barking at ringside is always entertaining. I liked that the finisher tied into the tag match finisher from before.

-The SES/Young interaction backstage was good...it took me a second to 'get' when Gallows said he manhandled Young like a punk, and then Punk looked at him....then it clicked and I LOL'd.

-Miz's rant at Bryan backstage was fantastic.

-Bryan vs. Regal was good while it lasted, I'd love to see these two go at it with more time someday. It was cool to hear the explanation for Bryan's red tights being a tribute to Regal, who trained him. Quick loss for Bryan, though, but not surprising.

-Young vs. Gallows wasn't much to talk about, really. I like Gallows' new SES top, gotta say. Anyway, I am glad it was a surprise rol-up win so it didn't make Gallows look weak, just like he dropped the ball. And Punk leaving with Young and leaving Gallows behind was interesting, the Young/Punk relationship is one of the better rookie/pro relationships on the show (along with Miz/Bryan and Jericho/Barrett).

    Yeah that bit was great.

The Britney Spears stuff. He said the fans had had one too may Britney Spears. Rhyming slang for beers.

One thing that annoyed me about the promos. How insular some people can be. When mentioning cereals and "bubble" gum they should have went a bit more British and mentioned UK brands The fans were lost a bit with all these US brands that nobody has heard of.

Ahaha this promo contest is brilliant. I'm convinced Bryan and Gabriel weren't meant to be good. The deliberately cheap English references confirmed that. They knew Barrett was going to win obviously. Really funny.

Skip is fantastic Darren Young came across as a massive bell end, unlike a lovable bell end.

Tarver needs to be the bad ass he always was in FCW. I always had high hopes for him when he was down there. He should suddenly snap and destroy everyone like mth said. Would be a great way to get him over and that'd basically leave only Heath with no real hope as it stands.

I'm still enjoying this show since it's the sort of concept I've wanted for ages. I'd enjoy seeing the new guys on WWE TV no matter how shit it was, but this has been handled reasonably well. Could be better, sure, and it doesn't hold a candle to the show it replaced on SyFy, but I have hopes that certain things will be tweaked for season two if indeed we get it.

EDIT: By the way, people really can't argue that this show hasn't got a number of new guys at least reasonably over. For years WWE has tended to call up wrestlers from OVW/DSW/FCW, give them ineffective undefeated runs, not bothering to do anything else and as such giving the fans absolutely no reason to care about them.

Gabriel is pretty weak character-wise, but I think crowds will continue to cheer for him when he wrestles. Pairing him with Matt Hardy in a tag team where he can take center stage in a Jeff-like role would be perfect. As I said before, that only leaves Slater with nothing going for him. Potentially seven new superstars in a couple of months. Very good.

I would actually say that Slater is the best worker out of them other than Bryan obviously.

He is talented, he just looks a bit rubbish. Personally I would chuck him in a tag team if he makes the main roster.

I feel I'm shockingly excited to hear Barrett's theme. I wonder if they just go with something he's used in FCW or go a completely new route.

Looking at his old themes on YouTube, this is actually quite great:

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is a Jim Johnston (or whatever his name is) theme. I'd love for that one to be his new one.

Kind of sad that the guy with one of the best themes got a new one, I was hoping Tarver would get a new theme, since he totally looks awkward coming out to Carlito's.

I was rather disappointed that the interview with Michael Tarver was entirely in character and about NXT, nothing about his background/personal life whatsoever. Seems after the first couple (Bryan, Slater, Gabriel) which were pretty revealing and legit, Otunga's was kind of a mix, and then they shifted into kayfabe with the rest of them, which is too bad.

I'm sad that we're not going to get any Miz/Bryan interaction tonight since Miz is still stuck in Europe. Unless they have him via satellite randomly.

Great show. Something was missing to make me love it, but I enjoyed the whole fucking thing, and it was solid all around. I really liked Slater getting the win on Jericho, surprisingly. He lost to a surprise roll-up because he was being cocky. Nice ending, especially in the Jericho story that is being told.

Young is on tear at the moment and has grown leaps and bounds over the past few weeks, at the moment I'd slot him in as the 2nd best behind Barrett. Tarver is a lock to go 1st, I enjoy his stuff, but he is beyond a joke atm.

Also props to Chris Jericho, this win is huge for Slater, does not hurt Chris in the slightest actaully adding to his paranoid character currently. Quick roll-up wins are always good for the upset in my book. Would have like to see something like that in the Swagger/Taker match last night, like stacking him up while in hells gate.

Not totally sure if Swagger will be champ long term though, as his win streak has been less than stellar non-title wise

Slater pinning Jericho is sad but.. Jericho's reaction just makes me love him more, is there anything he can do wrong?

"YOU'RE STUPID!" - needs to be the new avatar/thread title/forum cult "thing". Like "BECAUSE I WAS LOADED OK!?!?" has been.

Better than him losing to Stone Cold's brother Stone Cold Skip Sheffield. I swear if this guy continues his quest to being the indie version of SCSA I might as well end my life now. Seriously, when I see him I think of the guys ranked #430 in the PWI 500 who are unoriginal and just snake off someone else's approach.

I'd rather see John Cena's caramel brother Derrick Young win the world title.

Giving Heath Slater big wins is an attempt to give him SOMETHING of worth to run with, and it's not a bad one. As I said before, despite being solid in the ring, he's the only guy left who I don't think has anything going for him at all. Perhaps some big wins will do it for him and get him over.

First of all, he's not an "indie" wrestler. Second of all, he's really not that similar to Stone Cold. He's a big dopey Texan. Nothing about Stone Cold was dopey. There aren't any goofy big men of his caliber, so I'd say his approach is fairly original. He's leagues better than Otunga, who sounds like a metro Bobby Lashley and is staggeringly awkward and stilted in the ring.

I don't think feeding him Jericho was the best method to give him something to run with.

But... Skip's a Texan with a shaved-head who wears a black sleeveless vest. He sort of uses the Stunner and says "Yep, yep, yep, What it do?"

He simply has to be an Austin doppleganger.

Heath will be a GREAT heel; like Miz - all I want to do is punch him in the face. And if I cant do it, I will gladly pay to watch someone else to do it for me.

I kind of like Skip, but he is in the awkward position of having to blend his goofy/dopey persona with the RAWR persona - the faux-turn a few weeks ago was odd, as was quoting Keanu Reeves (twice!); but when he had the 'talk the talk' challenge he seems to be decent on the mic with all his catchphrases, just not when he's put on the spot and asked to discuss bubblegum.

Thats one of the problems with NXT, it's doing a good job of introduving new wrestlers, but 'buries' them a little with these challenges. This isnt Tough Enough, or the Diva Search - for the next season I'd like these challenges to be done away with.

I hope these guys can stay another season - I think the likes of Tarver could benefit from more time - even if they maybe take a season off to regroup; either way I am enjoying this show.

Sadly, Skip Sheffield isn't actually from College Station, TX. He's from Las Vegas in real life. Fooled me, to be honest. I wish he were from where they say he's from because I totally buy him being from my hometown.

He's not an Austin doppelganger. He used a similar tone of voice in a few promos, but his character is still a total goober.

Plus, the guy used to post on Rajah. How did we all forget that?

Honestly, until Iowan brought it up, I never once thought of Stone Cold when I saw Sheffield....didn't even cross my mind.

Went looking for videos of Reeves on YouTube to see if I could hear his real voice. Found this.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEMUSe32AYM"]YouTube- ryan reeves eating[/ame]

Now, I KNEW he and Miz were both on Tough Enough... but it didn't quite sink in until 1:03 when you've got a great shot of Miz behind Reeves. It's just shocking what a difference 5 years makes.

    Also, sans accent:

You know, I've said at different times that Ryan Reeves/Skip Sheffield was on Tough Enough 4, and Miz was on Tough Enough 4....but never realized until just now that they were on it together. Now Miz is, a "pro" while Ol' Skip is STILL a rookie.

I read that WWE are continuing to try to find a home for NXT after it leaves SyFy later this year, and they may consider putting it on their website if there are no other options.

They could do worse than putting it on the website.

Decent enough show this week but the challenges are beginning to get a little goofy.

Slater pinning Jericho was fine. It was played off as a fluke win and in the scheme of things means nothing for Jericho and a whole lot for Slater.

What I did like this week was the interviews with the pros rating the rookies. I like that we are seeing what the pros really think of the rookies and I like how The Miz says he cant stand Slater but sees that he does have something. Stuff like that.

Darren Young is fast becoming one of my favourites. He plays off the SES really well.

What happened to Barretts ring music eh? Obviously he didnt have a match but still...

Skip is nothing like Austin other than his look as many have mentioned already.

Tarver really needs to knock someone out. Personally I would have him continue to be a knobhead and get screwed and then the week before the voting is done have him face a bigish star who can afford a loss to a rookie (like a Jericho but well, not Jericho coz two losses aint good against the rookies, Actually someone like Khali would work fine.) and just have him knock him out after getting really frustrated and snapping thus saving him on the strength of opponent thing.

Wade said on Twitter the other day that he was still evaluating entrance theme options (and that he needed to discuss it with his mentor Jericho, who is a musical genius). In truth, since the rookies were touring WWE HQ yesterday, I would imagine he was taking care of it then. New Barrett theme next week?

First of all, me calling him indie wasn't meant to be taken as I'm literally calling him an independent wrestler, but a weak ass knock off that you find in the indies (which I explained right after calling him that). So his "dopey" attitude might not be Austin but the comparison isn't unwarranted. And lately he's really scaled back on the dumbass Texan and been doing more of a "take me serious cuz I say what it do and get angry!" role.

Not to mention he rocks the necklace, take away the designs and he's wearing almost the exact same attire as Austin. Justin Credible was labeled an Austin look-a-like and had to change up his attire by the WWE, Goldberg was tagged an Austin/Ken Shamrock wannabe simply cuz he was bald, had black tights, and wore MMA style gloves. Those were very basic comparisons, Skip Sheffield in my opinion (which doesn't need smart ass comments to follow) looks like he's Steve Austin's #1 fan.

Yes, black boots and trunks, bald head, vest with similar font, gold necklace, a modified Stunner, saying "and that's all I got to say about that", having a catchphrase like "Give me a Hell Yeah" (Skips is "give me a 'yep yep yep'"), that I think is good enough to label someone a wannabe.

Clearly, the answer to all of these problems is to make Skip wear a wig!

Wasn't it more likely that Goldberg was called an Austin wannabe due to the way he was brought into wCw and megapushed as wCw's answer to Austin? I don't recall Goldberg ever being forced to drastically change his appearance during his stint in the WWE(F whatever it was called at that point).

That being said, the WWE does have a weird issue with not wanting anyone to look like another of their big stars. Since they seem fine with Skip's appearance, one might conclude that he looks nothing like Austin.

He MIGHT have tried to lift a few (or several) mannerisms from Austin, but it isn't like Cena hasn't made a ton of money trying to sound like the Rock (and utterly failing when he tries, at least he hasn't done it nearly as much recently).
