I mean, she explains it in the movie...

"Wasn't it Leia's last official act to demote you? Because of your dreadnought plan. Where we lost our entire bombing fleet?"
"I've dealt with plenty of trigger happy flyboys like you. You are impulsive. Dangerous. And the last thing we need right now."
"You have bet the survival of the Resistance on bad odds and put us all at risk? "

And sure enough, as soon as Poe learns the plan, he recklessly leaks it...

And she also states their mission...

"There are four hundred of us on three ships. We're the very last of the Resistance but we're not alone. In every corner of the galaxy the downtrodden and oppressed know our symbol and they put their hope in it. We are the spark that will ignite the fire that will restore the Republic. That spark, this Resistance, must survive. That is our mission. Now, to your stations. And may the Force be with us."

By the end of the film, Poe learns to see the bigger picture...
He becomes less impulsive and reckless, knows when to disengage, and he comes up with the plan of escape...
    This is Poe's arc...

It takes the "Never Tell Me The Odds" convention and slaps it in the face...

I'm sure you understand what this entire "arc" is a metaphor for and why it couldn't be, say Admiral Ackbar in Holdo's spot.

Disney isn't going to have a guy named Ackbar fly a space plane into something...

I grew up a star wars kid, watching the original films a million times as most of us did. I just don't get how seriously people are about some of this stuff.

Keep your expectations reasonable and everything released after the prequels has ranged from decent to quite good.
I'll see Solo eventually. My thing is just that it's a character that I love because of Harrison, not because of the character so seeing someone else play him didn't get me excited. I got a Young Indy vibe leading up to the movie and that definitely didn't help.

I'm waiting for it to pop up on Netflix at this point, as it should be there in a few months.

On non-movie stuff, I got a gaming PC a few months ago (always had Macs at home before this) and started to play The Old Republic. Expected to not like it, but it has ended up being my favorite Star Wars stuff in a long time. The fact that the story can be played like a single player game was something I didn't realize and love. That era would be wonderful to explore for the movies, to get out of the same period of time they've been setting all the films in.

I think Solo got a bit of unwarranted shit, guessing the TLJ backlash was part of it. It isn't great but a perfectly fine action adventure. I didn't like the unnecessary bits Nash Diesel mentioned earlier (I guess we can't have SW without it anymore though) and while Alden Ehrenreich does a fine job he comes across like someone nice and well mannered pretending to be laid back and rough around the edges, while Harrison Ford just is.

I will never watch TLJ again but I will buy the Solo blu-Ray eventually.

Well, it's still Star Wars and a powerful brand but still down 56% from TFA Blu-Ray sales. Of course TFA was the first proper SW movie in what? 12 years so there will naturally be more buzz around it. There was a huge drop off in box from TPM to AoTC ($474 mil > $310 mil) as well, just like it was from TFA to TLJ ($936 mil > $620). The drop of over $300 million between TFA and TLJ is massive even though they made very similar opening weekend box office ($247 mil > $220 mil).

One reason is probably that many fans just like me watched TFA several times (I saw it three times in the cinema) but only watched TLJ once.

It seems like JJ is doing his best to right the wrongs of Ruin and TLJ. The leaks from Episode 9 sound super cool.

Watched the first few episodes of Resistance. It is pretty fun so far, and not terribly childish as people feared.

Elijah Wood is voicing a character who looks to be a main rival to the main guy. Really intrigued by where Resistance goes.

A little part of me is concerned they’ll go a little fan boy on this, and the trailer does nothing to suggest that’s not the case. That said, Solo aside, they’ve absolutely smashed every film since going back to the franchise, so in Disney I trust.

After Rogue One I tend to pay less attention to the trailers - I think the money shot is likely to be another illusion/Luke on Dagobah moment. I'm more interested in

I think this will be very different to The Last Jedi. The whole cast seems to be together so you have new things like Rey and Poe hanging out and probably no side mission like the Canto Bight stuff last time. Luke likely won't have as big a role, so you have all those emotions and expectations about such a beloved character gone. And while there's bound to be humour, I think it'll be toned down because there's so much to wrap up.

I don't really know what to think, because Disney trailers are so misleading nowadays. Who's to say C3PO's eyes will even be red in the final cut? All I know is that a lightsaber duel on the ocean looks incredible and I'm glad someone has remembered that B-Wings exist.

I really haven't been negative toward any of the new movies that have came out over the last 4-5 years or however long. I definitely think so far the episodes 7 and 8 were better than the 1-3 combined. Rogue One was cool for what it was.

I tend to stay away from trailers as much as I can when it comes to Star Wars movies because A-I don't want cool shit ruined and B-sometimes you don't really get the true feel for a movie and your opinion going in is based on the previews. These movies all can't be Empire Strikes Back level awesome. Look @ the MCU, 22 movies and maybe a 5th of those are incredible.

I saw little snippets of the trailer scattered across Instagram today and what I did see looked pretty fresh.

My only gripe, literally my only gripe, is that the dude who plays Kylo Ren looks about as evil and twisted as a can of soup with big ass ears. It's like Justin Long wasn't down to play the part so they got the dude from Girls.......Keep the mask on, I'm cool, take it off, fuck man it's like when we saw Darth Vader in Jedi.....Killed it all.

    I liked the trailer.

I think after the backlash from episode 8 this is going to be all fan service to close the show and open up a load of spin offs.

After seeing "evil rey", I think Rey is a clone...
That's why she was shown a bunch of Reys when she said "show me my parents"...

The ultimate plan will be to create a clone army of Reys to take over the galaxy...

I liked both movies quite a bit. People get very weird about their star wars expectations.

And nothing they ever offer in place of it sounds any better than what we saw. Or it's so fucking vague like, "I wish it had better writing" Where? What scene? What character? The whole fucking thing? Based on what?

It's like I said earlier, you can't expect every movie in this series to be on the level of Empire. And there will be a lot of fans who literally haven't liked anything since Episode 4, they don't even think Empire is that good. They fucking hated ROTJ for the longest.

And I can respect hating Ep 1-3 because Hayden was a fucking horrid actor surrounded by some of the elites (Portman, Sam Jackson, McGregor, Neason, etc.) but his performance really fucking sucked. Imagine going from Leonardo DiCaprio to having to settle with Hayden Christiansen.

With that said....These new ones have been pretty damn good and I love the franchise. LOVE IT. I still have the Darth Vader and C3PO figure cases and weird shit like that from back when I was 5 and my mom bought this kid's mega collection for $100 only to throw half the shit away lol. FUCK YOU MOM

    lol to you, too.

when it first came out i was willing to go 'doesnt work for me,' but having enough time and space now, and watching critiques of it and sifting through the petty takes for the actual substance, it's astonishing how horribly written it is. that doesnt mean people cant still enjoy it, but it's hard to dispute the quality of writing without doing the writer's job for them.

The people who say The Last Jedi is poorly written are out of their goddamn minds. You can dislike the choices they made or the story they chose to tell, but saying it's poorly written is just plain wrong...

I imagine if I ask what parts would you have changed to make the writing better you might have something but most fans just parakeet the generic statements that are too vague.

The loudest I have heard a theater for a Star Wars film minus me during ROTJ when I was six was Last Jedi. The internet trolls did a number on this. Granted I think the Poe storyline is very weak and sorta silly. It lasts for 15 minutes of the film. The rest is good to amazing. The entire Rey/Kylo/Luke story is fantastic and that is 60 to 70 percent of the film.

I was disappointed with both of the new Star Wars films, the first one seemed a complete re-hash of a New Hope, and the last one was sub-standard.

Why does one need to jot down a thesis as to why they think a piece of shit smells bad?

    Who's asking for a thesis?

Imagine if I just came in to a thread about your camera work and said "That event could have looked better". HOW? WHY? Sure, if you don't give a fuck that's fine. But when all you read is "The writing could have been better" Show me how it could have been better don't just throw some shit out there without any substance.

To me it's like some "critic" on twitter said "the writing of TLJ could have been better" and motherfuckers just run with that without even knowing what they're talking about....If you want to judge something from the laptop you should at least have something to back it up with other than some generic parakeet comment.

They won’t fuck it up. The trailer looks good and we’re not talking about making classic cinema here, this is a popcorn flick that feeds on nostalgia. It will be an enjoyable fluff movie in line with what the franchise has become.

Or maybe it’ll be actually great. I have hopes. But I’m pretty certain it won’t suck.

JJ even getting a hint of destroying C3PO or R2 pisses me of. He is going to break all the toys in order to be an Edgelord. Go fuck with your own stuff like Lost or Alias. Other than that it looks good and may have revealed too much. Rey and Kylo team up to destroy a dark thing.

We have zero context about Threepio's line. It seems like it was put in the trailer to drive the point home about the End of the Saga. Threepio is one of the last characters that have been there since the beginning, so I think it was more for an emotional punch than "being an Edgelord"

A face turn for Kylo Ren will be hard to swallow, after all, he killed his father, Han Solo, who brought the joy and excitement out of all these films. Unless he has to die a la his grandfather Vader, because there is still some good in him.

Redeeming Kylo is dumb. Yes, thanks to the prequels we now know Anakin killed innocent children, however in ROTJ, we did not know his sins. So, it was easier to redeem him. Honestly, he only kills Biggs and a few rebel pilots. Obi let him kill him. Here Kylo killed Han, lead the strike to kill Ackbar and the high command then forced Luke to scarifice himself. He is also a whinny bitch and that character has not earned it. Yes, he killed Snook, but that was him gaining more power than saving Rey.

It is. I’d love nothing more than if Asokah and Ezra are in this film, it I just can’t see how they would be.

My friend and I were discussing last night, why JJ thought it was a good idea to bring back Anakin's saber. In FA there is a joke quality about it being there and in LJ, it's symbolic for some reason to Kylo/Rey's struggle. Yet, it's destroyed in LJ, now it's back. We don't need understand why that lightsaber is around and not Luke's green lightsaber. It would be much easier to explain how Maz got it and might open the door of instead of a random crystal from an old dude to find Luke. Also, how did Rey rebuild it and why does she not have her own unique weapon.

On an entirely unrelated note, apparently Joel Edgerton is being coy in interviews about the possibility of returning for the Obi-Wan series so if that show ends up being about Ben and Owen grumping it up in the desert I'm kind of okay with that.

Benioff & Weiss are done with Star Wars, and that's a good thing. Game of Thrones is trash.

Well the movie is getting killed by reviews. I’m seeing it tomorrow so will see for myself.

I've got tickets for Sunday. Not really a Star Wars fan, but this certainly does feel like an event film.

I've always wondered what the world would do if we stopped giving "critics" a platform. I've never once bought, watched, read anything that I based on what a complete stranger said about it. Even if it was a best friend or family member, I've always been a "different strokes for different folks" type person.

Some critics don't like certain genres but have to review them. Some super fans are way too fucking critical.

Really you have to see a movie for yourself. And you need to see it without hearing what anyone's said. A completely open mind. You're gonna enjoy the movie a lot more. Shit, just hearing that critics are saying bad things about this new movie means I'm gonna walk into it with a negative view already. Sucks.

Yep. And for all we know, the people Pablo is talking about that are reviewing it might not even be fans of Star Wars, or science fiction/fantasy, or even action movies in general.

Rolling Stone will have the same guy reviewing country albums that reviews punk rock and for all we know, he's a hip hop head that's just trying to pay the bills. They're looking for generic criteria, does a movie have this this and this and how good is it to ME.

For example, one of my top 10 favorite movies ever is a Troma movie called "REDNECK ZOMBIES". It was literally shot on a home camcorder back in 1985 I believe. I promise you 99% of the people who have seen it would call it a terrible fucking movie lol. There are people who think Star Wars Phantom Menace with Jar Jar Binks is dope, probably someone who was 8 when it came out. haha.

I mean, I took a big shit on Casablanca in another thread recently, just wasn't for me so thank God they didn't ask me to review it.

I mean going off an aggregate website such as Rotten Tomatoes or metacritic is definitely with its flaws and a movie with an 80% could be better than a movie with a 95%. But when a movie gets a 58% rating it makes you wonder.

Obviously for a movie like Star Wars people are going to see it. But these rating websites definitely help with deciding between lesser known movies that you're deciding between watching. If this wasn't a Star Wars movie I'd decide to go see something else instead of seeing it in theaters.

I understand this, but is there a way on that sight to search by %? I'm willing to bet that there are movies rated at 56% that you absolutely love. I feel like some movies that are good for some people are not going to be watched because certain critics don't like it.

I don't disagree. But I will say that you're more likely to get more false positive (movies with high ratings that you don't like) than false negatives (movies with low ratings that you do like). So when a movie gets low ratings on average it tempers expectations.

I'm still going to see this and based off most of the critiques I think I'll like it well enough. I'm just not going to go in with great expectations. If it ends up being great, fantastic.

For me, it’s the fact that some of the geekier websites or those favourable to the current trilogy, whose reviews I’ve largely agreed with before, are writing about how disappointed they are. Not a good sign. But it’s simply impossible to meet the expectations for such a massive saga, especially when this film seems to have deliberately taken on the job of tying up plot or character threads from before this new trilogy.

I’m already booked to see it on Saturday and Sunday. The reviews might actually help to soften my expectations and make it more enjoyable in the end.

Well, we live in a world where it's very hard for most of us to form an independent opinion. We look for someone else to guide us and that's not always a bad thing obviously, I'm not saying don't listen to opinions lol. I'm just saying that it can get a little out of hand when someone goes "I saw on 1 website that gave it an unfavorable rating so that's the foundation for my viewing experience."

See, I try to avoid it because if it's something where everyone says it's awesome, I start analyzing the movie in a different way trying to find these awesome things and how they're NOT awesome lol. It's a mindfuck, product of doing music for so long, when someone tells you something is awesome sounding you don't believe it......This happened with Thor Ragnarok. Everyone was over the top about how good it was and I watched it expecting greatness and it was just ok. Had I not paid that much attention to the reviews my expectations would have been lower.
