Has anyone else read The Sculptor? It was one of the best things I've read in a long long time.

So I'm finally getting around to picking up TP Vol4 of Saga, and the first two trades of Sex Criminals. I've heard quite good things, and they should be arriving middle of next week.

Agreed. For a 500ish page book, it was a fast read.

My friend thinks Wally is going to be the Reverse Flash or a new villain that wants to put the old DCU back. He lent me his 52 Flash run, pretty good stuff.

Fairly new to the world o' comics. The girlfriend gave me a bunch of stuff to go through ranging from Whedon's Astonishing run, Kitty Pryde & Wolverine, Fraction's Hawkeye.. Any other suggestions? After having binged Daredevil, I'm fascinated with the character. Where would a good place to start if I wanted to get into it?

You are about to embark on a magical journey.

Daredevil you just need to pick up the Vol.3 set... they are excellent.

    http://marvel.wikia.com/Daredevil_Vol_3

And the Man Without Fear graphic novel.

Looking back you absolutely have to get a hold of the big cross-over arcs like Avengers Disassembled, Secret War, House of M, Annihilation, Civil War, Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, Seige, Fear Itself, Schism, Avengers vs X-men which takes you up to 2012.

They then re-launched their titles under the MARVEL NOW! banner, and from that to get a sense of the overall arc check out The Avengers, New Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, which will all lead into the big even happening this summer.

Outside of Marvel you absolutely NEED to get hold of:

    The Watchmen
    Maus
    Y the Last Man
    The Sandman
    Powers

    And for ongoing series:
    The Walking Dead
    Fables
    Saga

And if you might like Batman then there is tons of stuff too.

You can get most of that on ebay for cheap or free off the internets.

Well, I've read Civil War, Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, I have a massive compendium of Invincible and The Legend of Luther Strode. I've played The Wolf Among Us and TWD telltale games which I enjoyed thoroughly, because lets face it, Telltale.

Thanks for the head-start. Looking forward to diving in.

For Daredevil pick up the Frank Miller or Bendis runs. Definitely start with The Man Without Fear. While Waids run is good it doesn't come close to the perfection of those runs or I'd argue Brubaker's run (Which definitely should be read after the Bendis stuff)

Infinitty Gauntlet if you want to know what the next Avengers films are going to be about. I would suggest Spiderman Essential vol 1. Its the beginning of Spidey and contains the first Sinister Six team up. Then I would recommend Return of the Sinister Six as well as the Black Suit Costume trade. Guardian Devil for Daredevil is pretty good too.

Ohshit. I wasn't even aware that a 3rd volume(?) (I guess you'd call it) had been released. Excellent.

Has anyone read "Low"? I have Volume 1 on my Amazon Wish List. I've been trying to dabble in random books that aren't my usual go-to characters/stories.

I also just ordered "Hearts of Darkness" which features Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine

Ahh, I thought it came out last week, but it actually came out 2 weeks ago. Still feels like I just read it though - still fresh on the mind. It's called Legacy of Luther Strode. The first issue will have you worried; very worried. Can't wait to see how this series ends up.

I don't like it much either. A lot of soap opera malarkey masquerading as something with depth.

Ugh, they made Iceman gay for no reason in All New X-Men.

But the older version is still straight he was just gay when he was a kid, somehow.

This is so dumb. They should have just made a new character, a new Iceman even if they were so set on him being the one.

    This is all I've heard about in the past 24 hours from my girlfriend, and here's what she says on the matter;

"For years and years Marvel has been hinting at Iceman being bisexual (ie. his many meaningful relationships with women, his many near relationships with men that probably could only not happen due to the comic code authority and in particular his relationship with Cloud-- who was genderfluid and presented themselves as both male and female while they were with Bobby). The problem with what happened in ANXM #40 was that Bendis has erased Bobby's bisexuality and is trying to pass it off as if there is only one or the other. You are either straight or gay because "they say everyone is" bisexual (according to this issue). Even when Bobby suggests to Jean that he might be bi, she denies his sexuality on his behalf telling him that he's "more... full gay" (a phrase I've been laughing at since I read the leaked issue yesterday. What does that make Northstar or Karma? Double gay?) which, regardless of whether or not she is a telepath, is completely inappropriate. No one has the right to tell anyone what they are or what they should identify with. If Bobby is happy to label himself as bisexual (which he seemed fine with before the "full gay" comment) then until he is comfortable enough with himself to say he is otherwise, let him figure it out for himself.

As the icing on the cake, when Bobby asks why he's gay but his older self is not, Jean responds by basically telling him his sexuality is a choice. What. The. Fuck. Bendis. And then this whole thing is played off as cute and charming and not intrusive, rude and biphobic.

My friends and I have this running theory that Marvel killed Bendis years ago and are now dressing someone's big toe up in clothes for public appearances and using his name to fuck up the X-Books in some twisted attempt to have X-Fans abandon the books and then hopefully the movies so that the rights will default back to them. It's the only way we can think of that the three editors on Bendis's books and Marvel's editor in chief would OK some of the bullshit he's been trying to force feed us.
I thought his Uncanny X-Men #25 was the worst comic I'd ever read until the clusterfuck that is All-New X-Men #40 was leaked."

Yes, she feels very strongly about this issue.

Green Lantern: Rebirth should be essential reading for anyone looking to get into DC Comics. It basically sets up the Geoff Johns era and starts the windfall of everything to happen for the next few years. It's also super, duper good.

I picked up this Marvel 1602 book at the library the other day. Gonna make it my next toilet time book. I'm currently working on some silly Blue Beetle story, but it's pretty good.

Skip Waid's run; it has nothing to do with Daredevil and is just Waid forcing his love of Silver Age on the one character it just doesn't fit with. Bendis and Miller are your bets, though Ann Nocentei's run is also pretty good. If you really want to read 'Daredevil in San Francisco' stories, read the vastly superior 'Daredevil and the Black Widow' run by Gerry Conway.

No one been watching The Flash tv series then? Just watched episode 19 before and it was another excellent one. It's been consistently good all season. Storyline is good, the characters and meta humans are likeable and really good, fight scenes are decent enough. He's had crossovers episodes with Arrow. Yeah I'm really enjoying it at the moment.

DC Entertainment announced today that bestselling, iconic Batman writer and artist Frank Miller will write the epic conclusion of the celebrated THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS saga.

The “THE DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE” is the sequel to Miller’s 1986 classic THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS – heralded by TIME Magazine as one of the 10 greatest graphic novels of all time – and its 2001-2002 follow-up series BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN.

Miller will be joined by acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS, JOKER, and WONDER WOMAN) on the eight-issue comic book periodical, to be published twice a month under the DC Comics imprint. Marking the 30th anniversary of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS original series, this periodical is slated for publication beginning in late Fall 2015.

“Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting," said Miller, "but we’ll do our best.”

“We are thrilled to have Frank back home at DC writing Batman,” according to Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment. “The story he and Brian have crafted is an astounding and triumphant conclusion to this seminal body of work which influenced and shaped generations of readers and creators alike.”

According to Azzarello, “It's been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months. I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.”

Artists for the project have yet to be announced.
Of course Miller subtitled it "The Master Race.

Anyway, Miller might be a nutcase these days, but Azzarello is great, so that gives me hope that this thing won't be a dogshit taco. The bloody Superman logo doesn't inspire much confidence, though. I enjoyed it when Batman and Superman squared off in Returns, but that conflict is pretty played out at this point. I'd prefer to see the DKR incarnation of Batman do something we haven't seen before.

I wish I could be excited about this but like has been pointed out Frank Miller churns out absolute dross these days and as much as I like Azzarello's other work I don't really enjoy his Batman stuff.

I spent way too much money in Chicago at c2e2 but I had an amazing time. Also, most of the comics I bought I also got signed, so I think it was worth it.

All 5 signed by Tim Seeley in the inside cover.

Both signed in the inside cover by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton.

Rick Remender was impressed I was buying both volumes so he threw in the new issue and signed all 3.

I bought these because I've had a strange fascination with Power Girl since I saw someone cosplayed as her. Turned out the writers and artist were there though so I got them to sign both volumes in the inside cover.

The only comic I didn't get signed but it was Deadpool and a collection I've been wanting to read.

Not a comic but I needed a new wallet. I've had my last one for 8 years now. It says "My common sense is tingling."

Again not a comic but this is the best place to post it, I thought I was done buying Pop Bobbleheads until I saw this and couldn't resist.

My comic haul in one pic.

I did also get Death of Captain America volumes 1-3 trade paperback (unsigned) but those are for a friend as a surprise gift.

His Zero Year story was a shitter version then Batman Forever for fucks sake yet i see it being discussed as a classic that matches Batman at his best.

Fuck off Snyder and take your court of fucking shitty owls with you.

Really? His rejigging of the canon has been refreshing. The court of owls was excellent, and I love what he did with The Joker.

Court of Owls just bored me.

Death of the Family was awful and dragged out like most of Snyder's batman stuff .

Zero Year well like I say if i wanted to see Riddler be a former Waynetech employee who's a bit obsessed with Bruce Wayne who then turns Gotham into a vulnerable point for his electronic control structure I'd watch Batman Forever where it was actually done better.

The only good thing I can say about it storywise is that it wasn't Neil Adams Odyssey.

Endgame I've not even bothered reading the issues I've just filed them away and will probably get to them at some point. I was excited by the title at least as I'd hope he'd be fucking off after it but then he started saying he'd be around until #50 at least. At this point it's only because I've been collecting Batman since I was 6 that I've not cancelled my order.

I love Court of Owls and hope they use it for Gotham. Zero Year was a death march. There was good stuff in it, but I think Dido didn't do them any favors saying they were not going to re-write Year One then re-wrote it. The storyline could have ended with the Red Hood stuff and it would have been great, yet they did No Man Land part 55.

Flash was good. The issue of Aquaman proved to me he was a good writer. I apologize, I mistook John's Earth One with Snyder's Zero year.

Also, everyone needs to read The Sculptor. NOW!

I feel the exact same way as Mark Waid's Daredevil run. Luckily, he will be fucking off in 3 more issues. Unfortunately I don't see anything short of a re-boot fixing what he has done, and Marvel doesn't do re-boots.

Waid basically keeps trying to do Silver Age light-heartedness, introducing 'heavier' story elements for shock value only to do jack-all with them. He has made Matt Murdock a complete idiot, moved him from Hell's Kitchen to San Francisco (not the first time done, to be sure, but in my opinion an artistic mistake then and certainly an artistic mistake now), has started using goofy villains like the fucking Serpent Society (completely ignoring all of Brubaker's work in re-establishing old Daredevil villains), and has introduced the. Single. Most. Insufferable. Love. Interest. EVER! Kirsten McDuffie is a horrible person wrapped up a veil of pretentious enlightenment who is perfect and smart and good at everything and is totally-better-than-Foggy. Fuck the very electric synapse that bore her.

    Oh, and he did this.

Yes, that's what he wears to court. Yes, that's what he wears while fighting crime. Oh sure, the initial response will be, "HOLY SHIT THIS IS HYSTERICAL AND BRILLIANT; BEST JOKE EVER!" and then the joke goes on...

Basically, I can sum it up in that, in the noble and arguably necessary move to give Daredevil a happier tone (especially after Shadowland), Waid has decided to turn him back into 'cool cat' Mike Murdock, remove all the pulp noir elements that made Daredevil his own unique character and an A-list hero for Marvel (once upon a Frank Miller) and returned him to that "Poor Man's Spider-Man" that almost doomed him to cancellation. Which, going by the steady dropping of Daredevil comics sales since Waid took over (2nd lowest run in the comic's history, I believe), is poetically ironic.

Just put down Secret Wars 1 and I actually really enjoyed it. It's all out war, and IMO it read more like what the Ultimate U was in its hayday. The artwork was also just - superb. I'm intrigued to see how Marvel rebuilds their entire universe(s) after literally decimating everything and everyone.

Fucking appalling it was better then Death of the Family which is the biggest pile of shit Snyder has wrote on Batman and he has a lot of competition and his entire run has been fucking awful.

I fucking hate this constant THE JOKER MEANS BUSINESS NOW AND IT'S SO EPIC AND GAME CHANGING AND BLERGH!!! Just fuck off Snyder and go write the cheesy slasher horror comics you are obviously desperate to write.

Hasn't he lost his powers or something? I was reading the Batman/ Superman annual and Clark Kent was powerless and being chased by Bane , Killer Croc and some other dc villains. Wasn't quiet sure what was going on.

To be fair still better than what they've done to Superman.
We've got emo Alfred moping over his hand being chopped off. Mohawk Jim Gordon wouldn't surprise me at all.

No this is a done deal. It's from the DC Free Comics day comics setting up whatever their next insane event thing is.

As for Superman he is hiding out in a Motel 6 because Lois Lane decided to out him in the Daily Plane.

Yeah I hate the new 52 as well. I'm hoping Convergence reverts everything back to how it was. Might have to see how Marvel sales go after Secret Wars and we get a load of new #01's on sale.

You guys need to get on Spider-Gwen, Silk, and Howard the duck. All fucking awesome. I'm also a big fan of lady Thor
. So suck it if you hate on it its been one of marvels best books the last 8 months. The writing, art, and just the flow of the comic never a dull moment. As for DC my main three favorite pulls have been (until convergence came up and stopped production on them til its over ughh) Deathstroke, Gotham by midnight, and Gotham academy.

Secret wars number 1 was pure chaos and I loved it. Can't wait to see what else happens in that.

Secret Wars #2 was a much-welcomed calm issue, because lord #1 was relentless.

Something I've been noticing w/ Marvel is that while I've enjoyed most of it in the last several years... I still see them pulling a lot of temporary stuff. Captain America lost his super soldier powers and is an old man... now Falcon is Captain America. Thor (Odinson) lost his fitness to wield Mjolnir... now [X] is Thor. Iron Man's consciousness turned into a villain... now he's Superior Iron Man. I feel like I'm just waiting for Steve to become Cap again, Odinson to be Thor again, and Tony to revert back to good Tony. Marvel's tried incredibly hard to change everybody's status quo, but their execution comes off as very temporary. Things have become so complicated that I feel like Secret Wars was very necessary. If this is Marvel starting a new beginning... then I welcome it gladly.

Iron Man being a villian is the best thing ever for his character hes such a douche good or bad. As for Odinson..hes not getting that hammer back anytime soon...until blah either dies or just gives it up but more than likely dies. That seems to be how issue 8 ends with her talking. Shes not giving that hammer up. And Thors number 1 is coming out soon. Cap being old is meh don't really bother me either way. His one shot with Deadpool to keep wolverines dna safe was hilarious.

I'd like to see someone else write Spider-Man, Dan Slott's been OK, but is nothing compared to the quality of writing on Avengers and other titles.

I am hoping they put Peter back with MJ after all this nonsense. Tony has been a villain since he showed up in New Avengers into Civil War, he just used patriotic reasons to justifiy his actions. I know I am in the minority, but I am hoping Tony in the comic book dies. X being Thor makes sense as does Falcon being Cap probably more so than a brainwashed Bucky. Marvel's reboot has some interesting possiblities, but I doubt they go all in.

New 52 is a fucking joke. They have ruined characters just to be edgy. Batman and Green Lantern did even really get rebooted. Flash is good though, but man they fucked Superman hard.

I've become vastly annoyed w/ what Marvel is doing w/ their characters. Recently, they've de-powered Cap and turned him into an old man... they've made Falcon the new Captain America... they've turned Iron Man into an alter ego evil Tony Stark in a white suit... they've made Ice Man gay for no reason... they made Thor a woman... they've killed Spiderman and brought him back... they've made Scarlet Witch and Quicklsilver not Magneto's children... like what the fuckedy fuck are they doing??

You look at their recent artwork for their new Avengers team and it's all so... generically Disney friendly. When I saw X23 as the new Wolverine, donning the costume... I was like - what? And since Wolverine is dead, they're having Old Man Logan be in the same fold.

Marvel has royally fucked their characters so bad. It's all got the feel of a temporary thing like how Jean Paul was Batman for a little... but it's like ALL the characters are either dead, somebody else, or not themselves in some fashion. I wish to high fuck these titles could just go in their own directions without everything being tied into one giant universe storyline. I don't want Falcon as Cap... I don't want Jane as Thor... I don't want Tony as his evil alter ego... I don't want Logan dead... I don't want X23 as Wolverine... fuck.

And not only that, most of their books look cheaply drawn. The artwork has taken a backseat mostly even though there are some gorgeous books. I think Secret Wars is top notch, but when you go down the totem pole... it all looks like free comic day cheap shlock.

    Ugh.

Yeah Marvel has been disappointing and looking for quick bucks with the Death of Wolverine story and the new Secret Wars. I tend to stay away from massive crossover storylines because the payoff is usually not worth the cost. I'll wait for a tpb after it's been wrapped up to see if it's worth checking out. I prefer edgier and Marvel doesn't scratch that itch.

I've been collecting Batman, Harley Quinn, Walking Dead, Outcast, & Southern Bastards as of late. Southern Bastards is something flying under the radar by Jason Aaron that I've been in love with. It's my favorite work since his Punisher Max run, which is also worth checking out for a nice Kingpin origin story.

Did anyone pick up Bat mite and/or Bizzaro number 1's. They are fucking glorious. Sad they are just both going to get 6 issues each. But dammit I love when goofy/obscure characters get their own comic. Its what DC needs right now. All they have for a comedy character is Harley so these two dudes getting books is awesome.

Also Groot number 1 was awesome as well.

I can't wait for this wednesday Starfire number 1 ohhhhh yeahhhh dude writing Harley is writing it..so yeah gonna be good.

So pumped for starfire tomorrow as well as the returns of gotham academy, harley, and the new red hood/arsenal. Marvel also packing some good ones tomorrow silk and spider gwen.

I'm stoked. Need to get my hands on the GB/TMNT still but I actually think this crossover's more interesting.

Hawkeye ended this month. It' just - so beautiful. I've been a fan of Aja's art since Immortal Iron Fist, and he's simply one of the best artists today. And the book itself was such a tremendous read. This one was for the books.

    miller certainly has a style.

she looks exactly like selina kyle dressed up as wonder woman from TDKR, only less beat up and no pink hair.

i am looking forward to DKIII, though. i've gotten heavier into reading comics this year, but mostly back issue stuff. new material is too daunting. so actually having a monthly to get into is pretty exciting.

So I've really enjoyed Secret Wars, but I haven't been a fan of what Marvel has done w/ their characters for quite a while now. X-23 becoming the "new" Wolverine... Falcon becoming the "new" Captain America... Jane Foster being the "new" Thor... the current Avengers team being nothing but youngsters... it all feels like it's ALL about the kids now and it's such a mess. This is kind of like those comic book arcs that screams "temporary" like Superman being made of blue energy or Jennifer Cesare becoming the Punisher for 2 issues. But this is the new status quo that Marvel is driving home that this is what their books are going to be.

I tried giving the All New All Different books a chance, and while I think they're ok... they all feel like the same book. Every protagonist feels like the same character. X23 and Archangel cracking jokes like Spider-man... Captain America cracking jokes like Spider-man... and it doesn't help that the Avengers are all young kids and young kids love cracking jokes like Spider-man. Things really hit my limit when I was reading through Invincible Iron Man 5. So Tony is working w/ Doom of all people (who has his face back) to exercise a demon out of Madame Masque. Mission accomplished and Doctor Strange shows up. The conversation ends w/ Strange calling him and Tony "Awesome facial hair bros."

    Enough.

Is this writing now? Do these well-established characters that have been through everything really need to sound like teenagers that just learned how to text message? And there are so many confusing titles now that make my head spin. Everything has to be Uncanny, Amazing, Adjective, Adjective, Adjective.

I miss the day where the Avengers were just the Avengers and the X-Men were the fucking X-Men. Now we gotta deal w/ comic books turning in manga and adults turning into quippy preteens.
