    Modern Family

Just caught the pilot of this show the other night and I have to say it might have been the funniest pilot I've ever seen.

I don't know how many of you guys actually have this show available as its just starting the states but if you get a chance, give it a watch.

I'd call it a mix of The Office/Arrested Development in terms of how the show is presented/humor.

Like I said, probably the funniest pilot I've ever seen.

For those in the states, the show runs on Wednesday nights on ABC at 9 p.m.

I just watched the pilot on ABC.com and it's really funny. Ty Burrell is funny and of course Ed O'Neill is Ed O'Neill. Sofia Vergara... mmmmmmmmmmmm.

"I gave her my heart and she gave me a picture of me as an old time sheriff"

and The Lion King thing when they are introducing the baby was great too. I have DVR'ed the series now.

I agree. The gay son sub-plot was a great part of the show.

Plus Ed O Neil's relationship skills were left intact....thank god!@

I have heard all kinds of good things about this. Will definitely be checking this out. I almost always miss all good shows and wind up watching them on DVD 5 years later so this is a particularly exciting prospect.

Same here. I didn't start the Office until season 4. I had 3 seasons of DVD's to catch up with before the premier.

Someday I will get caught up on all 30 Rock and The Office. I have a bunch of ABC shows on DVR though. Modern Family, Cougar Town, FlashForward, Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives. Plus Ugly Betty is coming back next month... I think that's all, but I'm not sure.

It was ok. Good enough to give it another chance for Ed O Neil and Sofia Vergara.

Really, the best part to me was when they scheduled a time to shoot the kid.

That was great. The highlight was definitely the Lion King music coming on, perfect timing...but the whole show was packed with big laughs and there seem to be some likeable characters. The "cream puff" gag was just about the most obvious thing ever though.

I thought this weeks was funnier all around. The gay couple really aren't in their stride yet but I am sure they will have their moments. Really starting to dig the other main dad with some off his comedic timings.

How did I miss this thread? Hey, we're only two episodes in, but I love it already. I have a soft spot for Ed O'Neill because, well, Married With Children was fucking amazing.

This show is nothing like that, but it is smart, funny and well casted. Even the kids act pretty good. I really hope the writing stays funny and the show has some long term success.

I actually thought this week's was funnier than last week's.

I noticed this on the guide today and decided to TiVo tonight's episode.

Ed O'Neil earned the show one thumbs up just in the first five minutes. The gay guys got the other two (am I the only one who thinks it's weird that TiVo ratings go up to three thumbs up? I mean, three stars or two thumbs up would make more sense...but that really has nothing to do with this, so nevermind) before the episode was half over.

The gay guys and Ed O'Neil were amazing. The guy dealing with his wife, son, and hot neighbor was pretty predictable, and I'm less excited about those characters.

I ordered TiVo to record it every week, and I'll probably check out the first episode tomorrow online.

I enjoyed the second episode much more than the Pilot. I think this could be a pretty successful comedy if given enough time.

I hope people are still watching this show. Tonight was the funniest yet.

Manny getting revenge and Dylan's song at the end had me rolling.

I was glad to hear Haley isn't actually underage. (Birthday:24 November 1990) I'm a month older. I feel less like a pedo now.
    Also, "peerenting"
oh and Dylan at the end.

This show really is quite fantastic. I'm shocked at how enjoyable it is. The only new show this season that I go out of my way to watch. Eight minutes left until it airs and I can't wait.

I think the shows have gotten progressively better, with the most recent one being the best yet.

I've been catching up on this show and it's really tremendous. All of the characters are great and blend together perfectly. Each of the 3 families could probably have their own show. It honestly now rivals The Office for my favorite sitcom. Great stuff.

Check it out if you haven't.

I was disappointed that there wasn't a new episode this week, but they replayed "The Incident," so I didn't mind too much.

Manny and Cam are two of my favorite characters on television right now, but they're all pretty great.

Jay's son being the ginger guy from the class?

Or do you mean Phil who is Jays son-in-law?

Don't think I've seen the Ed Norton cameo, who does he play?

I love the episode where Phil does his back in and then his missus dresses up for the firemen...when Phil is coming out of the hospital and his wife sees the big-titted birds he's made friends with, the way he tries to cover up his wife's face in panic was hilarious.

3 and a half months later and I feel the same way... it just keeps getting funnier and now that the characters have had a few episodes to develop, its just amazing. I don't know if this show will get a following like Arrested Development or The Office, but it should, its phenomenal. I love that there's no laugh track and many jokes are just made in complete passing without any tip-off whatsoever.

Just watched the first 3 episodes and find it very funny. The dialogue is all very good and it's produced some big laughs. The bike being stolen stuff was great hijinx. Hoping to be completely caught up by the start of the second series.

Agreed. I usually watch The Middle, Modern Family and Ugly Betty every Wednesday. I used to watch Cougar Town, but not really anymore.

At the beginning, I thought Phil may end up being a bit of an annoying character, but after five episodes or so I really enjoyed him.

This show is fantastic. As much as I have greater affection for The Office as it has grown over the years, at the moment this has to rival Better Off Ted as the funniest American show going. The only minor criticism I would have of it is that the kid who plays Phil's son is the worst actor in the world.

And it annoys me slightly that they use someone who looks so young to play the part of his eldest daughter - I know that this is partly the point with regards to her relationship with the older guy, but seeing her take her driving test when she only looks maybe 13 or 14 takes away from the suspension of disbelief a little.

Those are minor, almost irrelevant criticisms though. Phil is the latest in a long line of fantastic buffoons - similar to Michael Scott, but different enough to not feel like a rip-off. The two mothers are great, Jay is great, Cam is fantastic and Phil's younger daughter is brilliant too. It's hard not to get irritated by Manny although I'm sure that's the point.

The Lion King reveal in the first episode was the most I'd laughed in ages when it happened. Fantastic timing, and followed by the "turn it off"/"I can't, it's who I am" exchange, brilliant.

Better off ted = cancelled it seems

    I think she's meant to be 16 and she's actually 18 so I don't have a problem with her

Just had a look and can't find anything confirming Better Off Ted's cancellation, would be a shame if it is cancelled though as it has really got into its stride after a slow start.

There's 2 episodes left that they haven't shown with no expected air date. Seems odd.

Yea the eldest daugher is 19 in real life.

For me this is the funniest show on TV at the moment, partly because The Office is having a down season. And while realism definitely isn't important for sitcom, while we're on the subject my two qualms about the show are that a) Gloria wouldn't be with someone nearly 30 years older than her unless she really is a gold digger and b) the kids - actually not all of them, just Manny and the youngest daughter with glasses - talk like adults.

If Better Off Ted gets cancelled I will be sad. Great little show.

Modern Family is brilliant too. I only download 5 American shows a week at the moment (House, The Office, Scrubs, Cougar Town () and Modern Family. I always watch Modern Family last cos I know I'm going to enjoy it most.

All the characters are fantastic, I think. I actually disagree with Simon and think that the youngest kid is not that bad an actor. I quite like him.

I also cannot decide who is nicer out of Gloria or Claire.

Manny speaking like an adult is hilarious, I think, especially when it clashes with Jay or he goes to the bar to pour a glass of juice or something. I'm surprised that's a qualm, since that's one of the "sitcomy", smart things about the show. If it irritates you, it irritates you, I just find it odd you'd mention that since that's one of the many things that make Modern Family what it is.

And actually, you'd be surprised at how kids talk these days. I'm amazed, really, at how intellectual some of them seem.

Also, Gloria being with Jay... its not directly implied she's a gold digger, but that's certainly left up for interpretation.

Gloria is ridiculously sexy. Claire is just lovely and nice and very sexy but not quite AS sexy. I would have to say both. They are both nicer.

Is Cougar Town good? I've been meaning to give it a go, and the trailer had Monica in her undercrackers, so it's probably worth proceeding on that basis anyway.

Cougar Town is pretty good I reckon. It doesn't take itself too seriously at all which is nice. Its actually got a developing storyline too (which is similar to the Ted/Andrea Anders one in BoT).

It also has as you say Courtney Cox in not a lot of clothes, whilst also having Jordan from Scrubs (who I want to fuck really hard but I'm not sure why) and this little minx too.

Claire's got a nasty streak as well.

When Phil was playing 'Clive Bixby' in the bar and told her that he'd do things to her that he couldn't to his wife because he respects her too much, Claire went and threw her panties at him.

I don't see Gloria being that slutty.

Yeah, there is something unexplainably fuckable about Claire. Its clear to see that Gloria is much sexier but theres just something abotu Claire.

None of you people have mentioned It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia as one of the best American comedies, when it's probably the best one going at ze moment.

Definitely, I laughed aloud at least twice, maybe more.

"I'll have your biggest cheeseburger, and instead of salad I'll have fries, and instead of fruit I'll have chilli cheese fries."

Then when Jay was throwing people into the pool... ahahaha. I love this show.

This show hasn't premiered in Australia yet but I'm sick to death of it already (thanks to Ten for playing the ad in EVERY FUCKING BREAK IN EVERY FUCKING SHOW). Worth actually watching?

    Absolutely worth watching.

So many great characters (Personal favorites: Phil, Manny, Cam, Jay)

    I find the show hilarious

There's a lot of hyperbole in this thread but it's certainly worth a look. And BAH GAWD the number of ads is sickening.

It's not without it's faults but overall it's one of the better shows currently on.
