Nice, looking through the GoT timeline there's some cool stuff there.

There are SO many interesting spin offs they could make from the Westeros history. They could more or less keep a Westeros show going for the next 10 years easily.

true but are they better left to mythology? I'm all for prequels if they get good writers and do them right. GRRM is on board with the pilot series they just announced so that's good. I just don't want this to become what star wars has become where they pimp it out indefinitely. granted this is HBO not a big movie studio and they have a tremendous track record so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they will get some great writers to do these stories justice.

Speaking of mythology, I am in the middle of reading The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and it is good stuff. The sections on the Targaryen kings between Aegon the Conqueror and The Mad King got a little boring. I mean there was some interesting stuff in there like the Dance of Dragons which is mentioned in the tv show but a lot of that 280 or so years of history was tedious. So the fact that GRRM's next publication is going to be Fire & Blood: the history of the Targaryen kings... that's pretty unappealing. I thought they were covered thoroughly enough in World of Ice & Fire. Just work on the main novels, man.

This book didn't put too much detail into Robert's Rebellion which was too bad because that was one of the main parts I was looking forward to (although there may be some more on that when I get to the Stormlands section). Overall, though, the book is great: the ancient history, the recent history up through Conquest and the Mad King sections were all very enjoyable and now I'm in the part that goes through each kingdom and gives a history on it which is cool too.

I am considering hopping back into book 3 of the novels which is where I left off now that I've got the thirst back. Although maybe I will save that for after the show has ended.

I figured there would have to be a spin-off. Happy to hear it.

GRRM has already said that by the time he has finished the main series it will cover everything you’d need to know from Robert’s Rebellion.

While there hasn't really been scenes outside of Bran's tower of joy flashbacks, I feel like the show has provided quite a bit of detail and context surrounding Robert's Rebellion. Although, I'd never protest a book or show that gives us a window into seeing Arthur Dayne live up to Ned's anecdotes, young warrior versions of Robert Baratheon and Barristan Selmy, etc.

I call it "earning a cool death".

There are certain characters on these shows that can die offscreen with nothing but a mention. But then you have the main characters, specifically the badasses, who have earned a badass motherfucking death with close ups and false finishes.

Stannis was one of my top 2-3 favorite characters in the beginning; his strife as the ripped-off rightful heir to the throne earned tremendous babyface heat not to mention Stephen Dillane's stellar portrayal on tv. His story was perhaps the greatest tragedy of any in the series and I was in a bit of denial when he was killed. The sacrifice scene was extremely uncomfortable viewing and I don't even like thinking about it.

I feel like a lot of the last two seasons was just the show runners sweeping away a lot of the more complex plots built up over the whole series to get to the simple endgame they wanted to present, which they’re doing now, and Stannis’ death was part of that. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s the outcome Martin planned all along.

Stannis was always headed for doom with Melisandra. I do hope they don't kill his daughter, but it makes sense for the story for his daughter to die. However, he does have some Greyjoy blood on his hands that he didn't have on the show.

Speaking of dead characters who are still alive in the books, Martin apparently said that HBO has killed off multiple characters that will never die in his books. Interesting.

Didn’t Martin say he didn’t like Stannis killing his daughter at the time? Sure I remember that from an interview, I suspect Stannis will make it close to the end in the books, his arc is just different enough to hint at redemption there as he’s not as coldly psychotic and more driven by destiny

A lot of book readers I've seen on various messageboards/reddit/etc. are adamant that Stannis will redeem himself, with a small contingent holding onto the idea that he is actually Azor Ahai (I can't imagine that, though).

Stannis being the chosen one is pretty done. I would like to see Stannis make it to book seven. However, Its pretty much a given that he dies attacking Ramsey. Unless, instead of the Knights of the Vale ride in to take Winterfell its a Jon Snow lead Night's Watch. The other possiblity is the craziness of Blackfish and Davos making Frey pies will cause The Boltons and Freys to turn on each other. Then Stannis and Jon just walk into Winterfell with Sansa still being attached to Littlefinger. Still, I don't see how Stannis lives though, he is too much of a pain in the ass that him joining with Danny makes no sense. On top of his killing of Mance that the Wildlings won't join him either. He is pretty much doomed to fall in some way, so the rest of the characters can align to fight the Night King.

To be fair, the show is so far ahead and made some many right moves that I might be disappointed by what the books bring.

I'm hoping for Mance to make a big comeback in the books. I think Ramsay is lying about having him.

    I hope anyway.

Naomi Watts will star in the “Game of Thrones” prequel pilot at HBO that hails from Jane Goldman, Variety has learned. The exact details of Watts’ character are being kept under wraps, but it is known she is playing “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”
I like Watts. It's kind of hard to imagine any well known actor fitting into Westeros (aside from Sean Bean who was born for it), but I suppose she's a solid choice for the female lead.

There was nothing that I wanted more than having the Crypts of Winterfell actually be something important. It seems like we are going to get some reanimated Kings of Winterfell/Old Starks and/or Night Kings.

We are thinking this was a scene shot specifically as a promo, not a scene from the upcoming season, correct? Unless it was a dream or something.

Sounds like a long time away but we've been waiting what, 2 years now? The light is at the end of the tunnel.

Speaking of forever ago who else has forgotten everything and will need to binge some seasons?

It just sped up things because they had to go by GRRMs notes since he hasn't released the sixth of seven books in 8 fucking years.

No I think he's actually gone out of his way to say that he reserves the right to change anything. Including his plans for future books that he shared with the producers and writers.

I like that because it's like getting two different versions of the ending stories.

Interesting. While I loved various aspects of it, I think it might just barely squeek into my top 3 seasons of the series.

And yes that teaser was not anything form this upcoming season. Producers said the first actual footage to be shown in a trailer is still forthcoming (to their disappointment).

yea I'm with them, I wish they would just do promos like this and not reveal any footage. I'm going to try to avoid watching the trailer whenever it drops.

To each their own but a trailer isn't going to ruin anything for me, it will just get me more amped up.

    I'm like Frank Costanza.

If I know I'm going to see something I prefer not to watch the trailer, even though it does get me more hyped.

I'm pretty sure I saw a clip in an HBO promo before the episode of True Detective where Danerys is shown in Winterfell with Snow and Sansa says, "Winterfell is now yours my Grace."

Daenerys has to die if Jon Snow is the great hero. I can't imagine a scenario where she's like "oh the seven kingdoms have belonged to you this whole time" and steps aside.

Everyone but the Night King dies. Westeros is left in permanent winter.

I re-watched season 7 to get ready for the premiere. I think it's a tremendous season, and only the wight-capturing mission stands out as poor writing. It could have been made a heck of a lot more sense if they had given it another re-write. A ramble of my thoughts below:

It seems like they started with the end point - that the season would end with the breaking of the Wall by the ice dragon, so how do we get an ice dragon? Well, Dany has to take her Dragons north of the wall so one can get killed. But why would she be up there? They answered this question in a fairly reasonable way, they just fleshed it out with dialogue rather poorly. The scene where they decide on the mission is so ridiculous. In a matter of second they all agree to this hairbrained plan to send Jon north of the wall and Tyrion into King's Landing. That scene does just not hold up well against what these characters would logically do, but it was close. Here's the scene.

And here's how I think it could be improved:
Bran sees the army of the dead, sends a raven saying he's seen an army 100,000 deep.
Jon reads the note with the Dragonstone crew and says he must go back north to fight.
Dany: How many men do you have in the north, Jon? Only 8,000 you say? That seems like a losing battle. And I was beginning to like you.
Jon: Then come with me! Your dragons and army will help us win!
Dany: No I can't do that, Cersei will attack and take back the lands. Plus while you seem cool and I want to believe you, I'm not sure I really believe you.
Jon: We must put the war on hold to deal with the real war! It's the only way we won't all become zombies!
Tyrion: What if you can prove it? bring one of the wights down here and show both Dany and Cersei that the threat is real. it's the only way they would both agree to a temporary truce.
Dany: what do you think, Sir Jorah?
Jorah: I grew up in the North. I never believed in White Walkers. But now I've seen dragons and wizards and shit, so yea I believe they could be real.
Dany: very well. go get your proof, Jon Snow, and if cersei agrees to the truce, I'll help you defeat the monsters in the north.

This isn't that different from the scene we got, I mean the main points are mostly the same. But Tyrion coming up with this plan literally 30 seconds after Jon reads the scroll and everyone being on board instantly just seemed silly. Better dialogue here could have made this make sense!

The scene north of the wall when they get trapped on an island is a little harder to fix, but it still could be improved. I mean, there's nothing that could make them running to an island and then having the ice break around them in a complete 360 degree circle seem not plot-devicey. But they could have improved the timing issue. The way the scene cuts makes it seem like they're on the island for only 1 night before Dany arrives on the second day, which is hard to believe. If they just threw in a line about how they have food rations for 4 days (or something to that effect), it could have clued the audience in that they've been waiting there for enough time for Dany to arrive. And you know, edit the transitions between scenes a little better to imply passage of time. Nothing major was needed to fix that part.

But then there's a couple dumb shots. First off, Jon seems to keep fighting the wights for no reason when he should just slash a couple of them and run back to get on the dragon. Not quite the best action choreography there. And then there's something really dumb, which is how the Night King loads up his ice spear and decides to chuck it at the flying dragon 300 yards away instead of the dragon about 50 yards away, on the ground loading up the humans. That was silly, and all they had to do was make him further away from Dany (up on his hill) so it didn't look like he chose the really hard target when there was a wide open dragon sitting right next to him. Just another annoying piece of direction.

Otherwise I think the season is great. For all the ways the above parts are flawed, they still led to a tremendous finale. I love just about everything about the finale, it was epic as shit, maybe one of my favorite Thrones episodes ever. And I think the dialogue in season 7 is really enjoyable overall. There are a few cheesy lines (mainly by Tyrion) but I think they nailed it for the most part. You've got a lot of characters coming together, either who have never met or are meeting for the first time in a long time, and there's a ton of intimate conversations going on over the season and it all plays really well. So I give the writers a ton of credit for that (while not having GRRM's dialogue to use as a basis anymore).

The Winterfell stuff also played very well for me. Sansa is great at running Winterfell, I love where her character has arrived at. The little scenes where's she's talking about collecting grain harvests and such were cool. And then I'm fine with the subterfuge played in the Sansa/Arya/Littlefinger arc. The scene where Littlefinger gets got is fucking tremendous. Literal tears in my eyes when Sansa is unleashing the "do you deny it" and the "and yet you betrayed her/and yet you betrayed me" lines. And then when Sansa and Arya are on the balcony at the end talking about Ned? Wonderful.

Cersei is also awesome in that season, and her deteriorating relationship with Jaime.

Season 7: overall pretty great despite the notable flaws.

The one thing I really liked is that they didn't waste much time getting everyone to Winterfell and didn't waste much time keeping Jon's parentage from him.

Dragon ride was a miss for me and in the future the CG on that will really stand out as poor. Even now it looked off. The dragons themselves looked great, but them against the background just didn't mesh well at all.

I don't mind it from a "story" standpoint.

Also I don't care at all about the King's Landing storyline yet.

the writing is still just so much worse than the first 4-5 seasons. whenever there's a non-action episode i'm probably going to be annoyed by it.

I just came back to say I'm glad we got the I'm happy to see you are alive at the same time plotting your demise episode of Game of Thrones done early. That is usually Episode 9. I liked the Dragon ride and the preview seems to hint to a big fight. Bran and Jamie was on point as well.

Drogon looking at Jon when they were making out made me laugh though I will admit.

The stereotypical situation of your pets watching but in this case the pets can breathe fire and eat you alive. Tickled me. But not in the same way that a Bronn one-liner tickles me.

Such as the fact that this episode had quite the symmetry with the first episode of the series.

I suspect that the Golden Army is lying about everything. They will take the Iron Throne at some point. Cersei will see elephants trample her army.

Surely the lack of elephants is just a budget thing.

Besides I don't know how those elephants are getting themselves across the sea.

Don't get me wrong, that was enjoyable, but it was also one of the weaker episodes I can recall.

The green screen work for the dragon flight, oh my days, it was laughably poor. The dialogue for Tyrion, Daenerys, Hound and Varys was leagues below what we're used to for them. The Greyjoy arc was concluded far too easily and quickly. The reunion of Hound and Arya left a lot to be desired. While they got Jon Snow not being Jon Snow out of the way early, it lacked impact.

Wasn't all bad, mind. The opening scene was very nicely done, the visual of the Umber kid and the arms was very cool, Bronn and the Crossbow to kill Jaime and Tyrion if they return sets a very interesting final arc for him and while most of the reunions fell felt, Jaime's guilt and shame were portrayed brilliantly when he saw Bran.

I'm with the general consensus though, it's left me a little bit concerned about the quality of what's to come.

Oh, to add to the good list, I think Daenerys as mad queen can possibly be confirmed now. It was a flat, emotionless, vapid performance. Given how we've seen her portray the role before, entirely deliberate.

It was fine for what it was, it set the table for what’s to come, got most of the main players in place and tied up a couple of potential dangling lines early to get them out of the way.

Personally I think it’s biggest problem was that as the first of the last episodes, especially after the huge wait, it was always going to be over-hyped and come to the party with a massive hill to climb, realistically this season needs an episode like this to get everything set for what’s to come, but no one wants that to happen when there’s so little screen time left.

Jons reunion with his sisters were both fine and reflected the difference between the two Stark women, I didn’t like Arya and the Hounds’ reunion but I enjoyed her catch up with Gendry, if Jon gets his nice but dim arse killed I’d happily see an Arya/ Gendry power couple come out on top.

Can’t see Bron turning on his two friends, hopefully this is just a dynamic to get him North in time to save them, again. Of everyone I’d be happiest to see Sers Bron, Davos and Jorah make it to the end and share a scene or two in the process.

I suspect the White Walker army is going to fall round about episode 6, with the ‘end’ being a North vs South battle being swung by the Iron Fleet returning to flatten Kings Landing, there are too many pieces too far apart, the Claganes, the arriving Golden Army and now everyone and Cersei, and somehow I think the ultimate defeat of House Lannister would make a more satisfying end than the defeat of the dead, but t that could just be me.

Agreed that the Cersei conflict will be resolved after the white walkers but there are only 6 episodes total in the season. 5 more now.

The rumor is that the big battle of Winterfell (humans vs dead) will take place in episode

Meant 4, typing on phone and distracted by small child on FIFA

I wonder if we get Mountain vs Dragon at some point, I read a comment from Thor in an interview where he was asked how he’d fair against one in the show and he ducked the question, I doubt it but it made me wonder.

The whole story pointing towards Jon HAVING to be in charge is interesting. I mean it's been his story line from the start. Whether he wants to or not he was literally born to be in charge but how is that going to change things now. Does Dany get pissed? Does she come to the same conclusion on her own? Only a Targ can ride a dragon (in the post show "making of: this notion is enforced by the show runners and how maybe this should be a clue to Dany) so perhaps she learns and accepts the truth. Or perhaps she goes bat shit and does a Targ heel turn. Something the Sir Barristan from the books is ever watchful for. Having served under them for so long he knows how quickly they can go mad.

At any rate yeah good episode of piece setting. Jon/Arya has been a moment waiting to happen for so long that it could never live up to the expectations but it was still sweet. The fact that the Stark Jon loves most is telling him that it can't be a stranger in charge is also telling of how this is all going to go.

I mean it's made clear in the histories of Westoros that the north was generally always allowed to operate semi-independently because there was no other way to keep them in the kingdom. They had their own religion and beliefs and cullturally they were just too different to completely join in with the rest.

Doesn't seem like Martin would have made that point so clear in the books if it wasn't going to play into the finale of the story and now we see it coming into play.

Bron heading north feels quite simply like a way to get him by Tyrion and Jamie's side. I really hope he never dies.

That final moment. Of Jamie getting off his horse and you're thinking "ok how does he handle this situation?" He's in Winterfell where he attempted to murder Bran the last time he was around. And of course it's Bran who sees him first. I'm guessing Bran will be the one to come to his defense by saying that Jamie has a part to play still and shouldn't be hung just yet.

I now seriously wonder if any dragons live. Dany mentioning that they werent eating as much because they don't like the cold indicates that their magic is somewhat lessened by the magical cold that the bad guys bring with them. I'm afraid they'll die defending their mother.

Any episode that has Missandei in it is 12 out of 5 from me. I was disappointed they didnt do another love scene with her and grey worm.

I think If Jon's lineage gets known most people other than the forementioned grey worm and the unsullied and uncle Jonah would quickly jump on team snow.

Im hoping to see sansa, cersei, daenerys perish soon.

And isnt gendry like 35 and Arya is like 12..was anyone else weirded out by that??

In the books, he's 15 in A Clash of Kings, and Arya is 9-10ish. So not the 23 years difference you are thinking. I think Maisie Wiliams' height might be why you think it is more.

Samwell Tarly was the MVP of the episode.

Good first episode. The pieces are in place and the stress is about to pick up quick. Somebody needs to tell Danny and Sansa to get over themselves and save the fucking world.

I actually love that element because it's so true to life.

That our leaders would sit and argue about who is the Lord and master of so and so while they are killed and stomped out of existence.

Ive always rooted for Dany but it's become increasingly apparant that the only person selfless enough to lead and win is Jon.

First episode was workmanlike at the very most and I don’t like how they’re blowing past some crucial moments. Jon riding a dragon should be a big deal, but it was played for a bit of comedy. Him learning his true parentage should be a massive deal, but Bronn’s scene with Qyburn and the women was a tad longer and it wasn’t even allowed to be the final scene of the episode. There was little reaction to Bran blurting out that the Wall was down. Theon rescuing and then leaving Yara within 2 minutes - even if they had spaced out those two scenes, it would have come across a bit better.

Maybe we’ll look back on this episode and be glad that all of this stuff was gotten out of the way so early to make room for what’s to come. But to me, this was a reflection of the least enjoyable aspects of season 7 - moving people around the board very quickly because of the time limit they imposed on themselves.

Best bits for me were Gendry and Arya reuniting (and Gendry just making everyone weapons like he owned the place), Samwell learning about his family and Bronn being given a big job right out of the gate.

I'm actually glad that they didn't drag out telling Jon. i hate when characters sit on vital info, for nothing other than dragging out suspense.

I also appreciated that they didn't overdo the Hound and Arya reuniting. That wouldn't be consistent with either of their characters.

Samwell was spot on, and brought the dynamic if whether Jon is not just the rightful, but the better, ruler to a head in a solid way.

not the best episode, but I am suitably intrigued for the future developments.

I really wanted The Hound to kill Arya there that would've been brilliant.

It was a little underwhelming for the first episode in 10 years. In the middle I got kinda bored and started looking at my phone. The Greyjoys just don't interest me at all so I can't blame them for me being bored there. But I would of liked something memorable especially with how the first episode of last season started with Arya as Walder.

There does seem to be a lot of babyfaces on Team Snowgaryen so I'm guessing there will be some heel turns, at this point it's basically Cersei and Euron vs the White walkers vs every other character.

It sort of sucks because the only two villains who can speak are played out Cersei (drink wine/sarcastic comment) and Euron who has been turned from Evil Madman in the books to laughing pirate in the show.

It's a little underwhelming. That's my only complaint about where we are right now.

I'm all about Sansa's character arc. She went from being such a brat to honestly the most fit ruler in Westeros. Outsmarting even Littlefinger and Tyrion (although one could make the case that Tyrion too knows that Cersei isn't sending her troops and he's playing his own game).

The dragon scene was some harry potter shit imo. The scene at Last Heart was pretty awesome, but otherwise the episode was really lackluster upon first watch.

I thought perhaps my expectations were too high, so I waited a couple days and re-watched tonight. Unsuccessful. I'm hopeful the remainder of the season will be dope though.

I hope people realize this is it. All the reunions and cool little moments we've been waiting for just happened and now it's on to war.

Of course the first episode was slow. They can't have the final battles first and then stand around and talk about it the rest of the season.

I have read the books but just watching the show, physically one of them looks around 30 and the other looks about 14. I found it awkward and i hope Jon and Daenerys will add Gendry to the unsullied if he keeps it up.

I see no issue with Arya and Gendry romancing if they go that route. Arya is very much a grown woman (not to mention seasoned warrior) on the show. And the actress who plays her is 22 (21 at the time of filming).

Maisie Williams does have a young look but I wouldn't say she looks 14.
