No idea what that's about, but it doesn't really seem to spoil anything.

Also, I have to agree that these aren't all that well written, but one thing I do love about them is how you might come across a chapter/character that doesn't really interest you and by the end of the chapter something so has turned to make it completely enjoyable and relevant to the overall story.

That's what he does a very good job of. I didn't give a shit about half the characters introduced in the 2nd or 3rd book, they were nobodies before why should I? But then you're all behind them.

    Like in the second book.

True for the books, but for whatever reason (probably the age of the actors maybe?) I have the feeling in the TV series that they aged up Jamie and Ned to different Degrees. Admittedly, its less of a fact and more of a presentation and feeling.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING HOWLAND. What an annoying character he is. If he sits out the next book I will be furious.

I don't think there are any real spoilers in that. If anyone takes offence I will edit out whatever.
Amen to that. Fucking Howland needs to show the hell up.

Fuck lads, why isn't the next book out already. I've only had to wait a month and I'm already chomping at the bit.

This is the fourth or fifth book coming out?

Is there an end in site for the series or is it going to go on and on and on until he fucks off and dies like Robert Jordan with no ending after 17 books, 15 of which didn't advance the story?

Howland Reed sounds like he should be in the X-Men.

    It's the 5th.

There should be 7 in total... but we'll see.

Jamie may well be perfectly cool, but he went against Ned and Ned has been built as the best man you could hope to know. Thats the problem.

I say it goes to six books. I expect Book 5 to full of amazing shit considering how much exposition was book 4. I really do believe if book 6 or 7 happens it will be epilogue.

    Supposedly 7.

However it began with being 3 books

    Then I think 5

So....yeah, I'm not holding my breath

I guarantee you the story isn't ending in the 5th book. He's even said some stuff he wrote for the 5th book he's already shifted to being in the 6th.

Besides if you've read the 4th book you know they can't end it in the next book for one...

Very very slight 4th book spoiler

Pablo, I was saying that the original plan was for it to be 3 books. Then I think 5. Currently its supposed to be 7. With that trend, I wouldn't be surprised if it got longer than even 7

Oh I misread that completely. My bad.

Yeah you're right, at the way he's going it will probably be more than 7.

Right, so I finally watched the last episode. Had to catch up on two.

While I feel that a lot is being passed glossed over, probably because I just finished re-reading it, it's hitting every point it needs to hit and doing it wonderfully.

    Book 1 Spoilers:

Also, I'm watching the series with my girlfriend, and I've noticed that when it is actually hard to keep up with who all the people are without knowing so ahead of time or actually paying attention instead of asking questions all the fucking time instead of just watching the fucking show and figuring things out.

But truthfully there are a LOT of characters, and I can understand it being difficult to keep up with. I wonder what ratings are now and if anyone's been turned off by it.

What are the ratings like now 5 episodes in?

Because even reading it, sometimes it's like, "Alright, who the fuck is this guy now?" and then later on, "OHHHHHHH, it's THAT guy!"

And this is why Game of Thrones has actually gone up each episode. A little bit to be sure, but it's gone up.

*edit* I believe the number is for the first showing on HBO though. Not sure how that combine with the encore is going

I would need to go over to Winter-Is-Coming or the Westeros forums to double check the exact numbers, but I believe the ratings have steadily increased each and every episode rather than the other way around. Episode 5 set a new record with regards to first showing and first night total viewings.

Not bad considering this is happening in the middle of HBO's recent pimp of their digital sources with the launch of HBO Go.

Also, neat note....if you have HBO Go, Episode 7 will be available immedietely following the premire of Episode 6. I think they realize people may not be at the couch on Sunday before Memorial Day and are hoping it may be a good enticement to get people onto HBO Go.

Went to my brothers earlier and we had a good chat about whats happened in GOT so far, then I see on his shelf he has the first three books. Those books are thick but I really want to read them but I'm not a massive booker reader, only read Footy player's autobiography.

I'm going to borrow the first one and take the plunge.

I was sick yesterday and decided to watch the first 5 episodes of Game of Thrones to see what it was all about.

Very impressed. I look forward to future episodes. Didn't realize it was a series of books.

Its got a release date in June or July I think, and that's from the publisher. Martin has blatantly lied about 80 times about the book coming out but this is really hopeful.

That's a rule for network television. It doesn't ring true with Cable.

Cable shows generally have a lower starting point (eg Game Of Thrones' 2.2mill vs Lost's 18mill).

Mad Men, The Sopranos and True Blood all increased their ratings throughout their run. (Well Sopranos did until the writers strike and people lost the show after that)

Breaking Bad, Walking Dead and even the cancelled Rubicon retained their entire viewership.

I suppose cable shows are more niche and the people who tune into the first episode are nerds who mean to stay on board the whole time and spread the word to their other nerd friends (like me).

Maybe one of you people who knows what you're talking about can tell me if ratings factor in DVRs? Like, are ratings still just based on who's tuned in at the time of the original airing or do they track people who have recorded the show, too? Because I rarely get to watch a show right when it's aired but always have what I want to watch on DVR.

If it's not tracked, then viewership has to be a good deal larger than what's reported.

Two more questions, one curious and one stupid:

    1) How long since the last book came out and how long has the new one been put off?

    2) How does Ned work as a short name for Eddard or Edward or whatever? Ain't no N involved.

JI, the entire ratings system i quite screwed up since it doesn't take in enough of the population to really calculate it effectively.

They do calculate DVR which is noted by Live+7 (people who watched it live or DVRed it and watched it within the week).

He finished A feast for crows (which was so crap and boring) in 2005 and put a note in it saying soz no interesting characters that you care about like Jon or Tyrion were used in this book but don't worry the next one will be out in 6 months.

    It is now 2011.

    2. I guess like teddy is a nickname for Edward. Just fun to do.

I was annoyed that we hadn't seen Stannis at all the season when he's going to play such a big part in the future. After this weeks two episodes I have an idea why and I'm fine with it now. I think they want to get a big name actor, ala Sean Bean, to be Stannis.

In order to promote the HBO GO app they launched HBO put up next week's episode for online streaming here in the states. Of course, you need to subscribe to HBO and your provider needs to be on that has agreed to work with the app. (Timewarner Cable isn't on the list for example, even though Timewarner owns HBO... fucking retarded)

They did this to promote the app, as well as the fact that next weekend is a holiday here in the US so viewership tends to be way down that weekend.

Not sure why we are spoiling it. It has happened in the show. The reasons for him leaving are being explored.

So is anyone here discussing episode 7? If so can we spoiler it? If not, I'm a little confused.

Who was the guy who fought for Tyrion? Why did he fight for him and why is he significant? Where have we seen him before? Other than him being Jerome Flynn of course.

No we are talking about if Stannis (the kings brother) appears in the first novel he doesn't. He runs to Dragonstone when Jon Arryn dies.

    Its not really a spoiler.

Also the guy who fought for Tyrion is Bronn. Bronn was in the previous episode he was the fellow who said that Tyrion needed to have some sex after the battle and Tryion responded that he would be up for it if she was (Catelyn)

He is my favourite character. He is just a sellsword but he rules.

Why is he supporting/fighting for Tyrion then? Is he not supposed to be loyal to the Stark house?

    Oh I left out why.

    For money.

He isn't really loyal to anyone. He just took up arms in the inn because he expected to be paid but he quickly came to the conclusion that the Starks are honourable and he would make more coin out of the Lannisters because they are both richer and more prone to use mercenaries.

    Cool.

I get the feeling that some massive shit is going to kick off as a result of Ned's decisions as stand in King this week.

Ned should've been King all along, not Robert.

Yeah the title of the next episode is a quote from Cersei Lannister where she outright says something along those lines that he should have taken the throne when he had the chance.

I don't think he would have been any worse than Robert. He wouldn't have put the kingdom hugely into debt but he also is pretty dumb. Your love of Sean Bean is clouding your judgement here but Ned Stark is a fucking buffoon who refuses to be pragmatic ever.

Ok some more information on the kingdom. The Land of Westeros is made up of seven kingdoms all united under the throne. The Targs originally united the kingdom using dragons to win battles. Basically each of the seven regions is ruled by a liege lord who has many, many, many bannermen under him. They all swear allegiance to the crown. The lands are Dorne (House Martell), the Iron Islands (house Greyjoy), the North (House Stark), the Reach (House Tyrell), the Stormlands (House Baratheon), the Vale (House Arryn), and the Westerlands (House Lannister)

There are also another few major areas most of which claimed by the crown (the crownlands and Dragonstone which was originally the seat of House Targaryian) and the Riverlands which is ruled by House Tully.

So every other minor house you here about is sworn to one of the above Liege Lords. Like for example Gregor Clegane is a bannerman for Tywin Lannister. As House Clegane is in the Westerlands. (in fact House Clegane was created by the Lannisters as a reward.)

I only twigged it was him the other night.

    He's ace in it.

Bronn is the guy who Tyrion bought the room off in the inn, just before Tyrion was captured.

    He's a mercenary.

You lot are dicks for watching the next episode...where can I find a high quality download of it?

Pete, you've only just cottoned onto the fact that I love Ned primary because of Sean? Thats obvious. However it does seem quite clear that the show (presumably moreso than the book) has painted him as the most traditionally heroic character so far.

I watched the next episode because I'll be at my parents' house this Sunday with no access to HBO. HBOGo is looking more and more like the "go-to" app for my iPad. Full seasons of shows, movies and comedy specials? Sign me up.

Nah, seriously though Pete, in the interest of encouraging conversation and debate in here, I accept your points and think that you are right. I do still love Ned nonetheless though. He's undoubtedly foolish, but he is brave and honourable. I get the feeling that (perhaps quite rightly) that is a rare thing for the Game of Thrones and it'll be interesting to see how his family adapt outside of Ned's virtues which presumably they will need to do if they want to prosper/survive.

I loved me some Dark Tower...

But this is far and away the best fantasy series I've read. And considering the eh nature of parts or all of the last three dark tower books, I'd say take a break from Mid-World and come on over to Westeros

i had never even heard of this series before the show started but the way it was presented in the episode made it seem like it was more out of a sort of affection for tyrion. they sort of bonded during the ride to that massive castle where stark's sister rules(yes i dont know any of the names), with the after-killing conversation they had and, "give me ten good men and i'll impregnate the bitch" > "I like you.", plus I think they showed him laughing during Tyrion's phony confession, and the way he sort of smiled and shrugged when he stepped forward to fight for him. it seems they bonded over their sort of dickish senses of humor and unscrupulous ways etc.

actually their odd bonding is probably my favorite part of the show thus far. thats just how it seems to be presented on the show at least.

You know, I wonder if those of us who read the book are biased because we are introduced to him as a sellsword. The show does kind of give it a different sort of feel.

To be honest, I always got the feeling that it was in part due to the fact that Bronn liked him as well.

Like...if Tyrion was an annoying stuck up royal prick who flaunted his money in front of Bronn but other than that was just a jackass...that Bronn probably wouldn't have bothered. Yeah, money was there. But he'd be risking his life to spend time with a prick he couldn't stand for the POTENTIAL for some gold which wasn't even certain.

I think it was the fact that he DID like Tyrion, that he found him rather humorous and enjoyable, that made it more likely that he'd do what he did. Now, Tyrion's lovely personality alone wasn't going to cause it to happen. If he was a poor SOB Bronn would've found him amusing...but wouldn't have put his neck out for him.

I think it was very much the mix of cash and good company that got Bronn tied up with Tyrion and following along with him. Less of either of them I think would've required significantly more in return from the other side of the equation.

You do kind of see that in the show, with Tyrion getting his attention first and foremost by giving him money for his room...which Bronn is readily happy to give up just to get a bit of gold. I have a feeling that next time we see the two of them we'll get a bit more insight into Bronn expecting money. He's not a dumb man, and unlike Mord I doubt he needed to be reminded of the sayings "Rich as a Lannister" and that a "Lannister always pays his debts". So once you end up coupling that with the things already mentioned regarding their interaction and I think you'll find it closer to the book then it may seem.

Yeah, I get the feeling Bronn actually likes him a bit too. But it is also definitely about the money too.

In the lead up to Bronn stepping forward remember that Tyrion was laying it on thick about his family's wealth.

They talk about it afterwards when they are leaving. Tyrion proposes that working for a house less concerned about honour holds more promise for a sellsword and Bronn agreed. Plus Catelyn totally lost control of the situation in the Vale so it must have been a worry for him.

Bronn and Tyrion get along though. They have similar personalities.

HBO sent through some HBO stash... so I have a nice Lannister sigil t-shirt.

Trouble is, and they always do this, they sent through only large and extra large.

    Got a nice notebook too.

    It's a dark red t-shirt Mik. I don't think it'd suit your colouring.

But I'm happy to send it up if you want it.

I very nearly bought the first book at the shops just there, but I decided to stay dedicated to The Dark Tower until its done. As long as I get caught up on GoT before the next season.
