Just finished the show and am 20 minutes into the two-part extra bit. Really not seeing the point of it. I may pick it up tomorrow or may think better of it.

I'm upset they didn't go with the original plan of bringing Stone Cold back as his own twin brother.

I can't think of a sitcom (current or in recent memory) with a more successful run than How I Met Your Mother. Constantly consistent, funny, hasn't strayed from it's goal and hasn't gotten stale.

Good choice. It didn't have a "goal" per say like HIMYM but it is easily the gold standard as far as comedy sitcoms.

No. Mess of a show. So fat removed from the original episodes and is clearly just a cash cow. Heavy handed melodrama punctuated only by grotesque caricatures of what started out as identifiable and relatable.

Also Ted moesby is the.single douchiest douche in tv history

I really hate Ted. Especially after the very end of last season. I mean, he was already by far the worst thing on the show, but that just made him such a fucktard.

HIMYM is amiable enough and has its funny moments, but its nothing to go into superlatives about.

Well I don't watch much television. What do you guys recommend? (30 minute sitcoms that can be found on Netflix and is good for a watch with the misses before bed).

It feels like they got greedy realised the format of the show was short lived so abandoned it and tried to become a traditional sitcom and hope noone noticed. The mother? Err no you dont care about.that but what about Ted and robin #18859449 bleugh.

    Modern family kicks.the shit out.of.it

Breaking Bad - The fiance started that last friday on her own. I'm gonna play catch up with her on lunch breaks. I have never heard a bad thing about this one.

Modern Family - I watched season 1 and then got too busy for TV. Looking forward to catching up with this one once it hits Netflix.

Haven't looked at Malcolm since it was on the air. I imagine it would be brilliant seeing Mr. White in it now.

A show that was a little before my time as a kid and one that I have yet to get into as an adult. I believe it is on Netflix and I guess we could give it a try. My fiance is a huge MASH fan. I don't know why but I have seen a few episodes and like it but not at her level.

The Frasier character is one of my all time favorite TV characters. Great great show.

As far as shows IB can check out, give Raising Hope a try. It's on Netflix Instant and I love it. Very funny show.

So I watched The Expendables 2 today.

It was fucking incredible fun. Superior to the original in almost every way. Obviously not the best movie ever made, neither is it the best action movie in the world, but it IS enjoyable as heck and the cartoony camp factor goes into over-drive by the time the credits roll (much the the film's advantage). The original film seemed to take itself a tad too seriously considering the premise, but with this one having larger parts for the Schwarzenegger's, Bruce Willis' and Chuck Norris' of the world, they've decided to relax with it a bit and just have some genuine, crowd pleasing, awful one-liner spewing, self-referential fun with it all.

The opening 15 minutes pretty much blows away the first movie. The humour is ratcheted up (Dolph Lundgren somehow threatens to steal the show a whole bunch of times), they've actually attempted some genuine continuity from the previous entry (more-so the Director's Cut than the Theatrical). And throughout it all also manage to somehow give the film a bit more heart and characterisation even though it's crammed with four or five more big name actors parodying it up whenever they can. JCVD plays an excellent villain and should have done it more often (the guy is naturally a slimeball) and when Bruce, Arnie and sly are sharing screentime Bruce is always a step away from utterly breaking character and falling apart in laughter, but in the context of the movie it just feels OK.

It's the movie the first one should've been, I actively enjoyed this more than I enjoyed bloody Batman.

How big is Arnold's role? And is he basically just an old John Matrix from Commando? That's what I'm kind of hoping for.

It's big enough, let's put it that way. I don't want to ruin anything (not that there's anything worth bothering with in the way of plot), but Willis and Arnie both have about five minutes worth of screen-time between them as the movie chugs along, before turning up to lay some fucking smackdown in a good long sequence of events. And when you realise what part of the movie they're turning up for, if you're anything like me you'll just get excited in the pants.

Arnold is just playing Arnold Schwarzenegger. His character is essentially the same as it was in the first movie, just with a big fucking gun in his hand and more of that awful self-referential "he wants to be the president" kind of stuff, but instead aimed at his movie career. And when I mean awful, I mean the good kind of awful.

And you can tell which one of them stuck with the genre and learned actual gun training as they got older. Willis is blasting away like Jack Bauer, looking down his sights like a genuine commando. Arnie just holds whatever he can find by his hip, just like the Arnie of old, and manages to slaughter about one hundred million people.

I am currently reading "Divergent" by Veronica Roth. It's bee marketed as another Hunger Game series. I don't see a lot of similarities just yet. I am liking it a lot.

Tonight I'll finish season 6 of 24. What an amazing show overall. I know season 6 is regarded as the "worst" season, and it certainly recycles a number of plots and twists from previous seasons, but it's still been very enjoyable. Just Redemption and the last 2 seasons to get through now. I already know who's coming back for season 7, but I know nothing about the others so it should be good. I don't want it to end.

How quickly have you rattled through those six series? I'm so envious of anyone who watches 24 for the first time. Without a doubt my favourite show ever.

Seasons 7 & 8 were both good, IMO, although both got mixed reviews at the time. The first half of 7 and the second half of 8 are sensational.

I've got to re-watch Season 6. I lent the DVD to someone but don't remember who and everyone is denying all knowledge.

I didn't hate Season 6 as much as others did, however by Season 8 I did feel like it'd come to the end of its natural life as a TV show. 7 is great, and 8 is half of a terrible recycled parody of 24, and another half of genuine greatness.

It really felt like the prime time to make that leap to the big screen and it's criminal that that hasn't happened yet. I can't watch that advert above without thinking how much older Kiefer is looking these days.

I found Quantum Leap on the US Netflix the other day. I've got seasons 1-4 on DVD but never got around to getting the last season. I was going to watch it but it's missing random episodes for some reason. I can't see any good reason why.

I'm actually surprised at how much Netflix has changed my viewing habits. I think I said in the thread in the Tavern when it launched that I like to buy films and TV shows and don't see that changing but it really has changed in just a couple of months. There were a few things I was going to buy in HMV at the weekend which I ended up just deciding not to as I've got Netflix. Really good little service.

It really felt like the prime time to make that leap to the big screen and it's criminal that that hasn't happened yet. I can't watch that advert above without thinking how much older Kiefer is looking these days.
I honestly don't remember which one 6 was, but I loved most all of 24. The only time it lost my interest was in the final two years and that was, in part, due to the delay. In that time I watched over previous seasons multiple times, was very aware of the formulas and found the swerves to be overwritten. Also, by the end, I got this frustrated notion in my head of "why wouldn't everyone just listen to Jack with all the times he's saved the universe?"

The first three seasons are some of my favorite television ever.

I decided to pay those Unblock-us guys who everyone used for the one week trial when Netflix opened over here. I'd rather not have had to do that but at the end of the day it's $4.99 a month which isn't even close to the price of a pint over here. I figure it's worth it for now. Particularly as it gives me access to the iPlayer which is region-blocked in Ireland otherwise.

Just scanned some of the recent posts regarding 24 in fear of spoilers, as I'm currently making my way through it for the first time. I missed it originally, as I didn't have Sky at the time, and I bought the entire series (plus Redemption) on DVD a while back as it was a really good deal, plus it's one of those shows I've always wanted to watch but never got round to it. And now, rather ironically, since I've recently moved into a new house and I don't have Sky or broadband until the 5th of September, it's given me a chance to catch up on my huge backlog of DVD's and Blu-Ray's.

I'll keep it spoiler free to be on the safe side, but I have to say I'm absolutely loving it so far. I actually think I've become addicted to it, as I only started watching it about a week and a half ago and I have six episodes to go until I finish Season Two.

What I love about it is that, unlike most shows, there's pretty much little to no filler at all, at least so far anyhow. I sit down intending to watch one or two episodes and before you know it I've watched the entire disc of four episodes. I know I'm about ten years behind everyone else, but Jack is my new hero. What a guy.

Also, please tell me I'm not alone when I say that I've developed this little game of guessing the time when it comes back from a break?

I've never played that game, Jay. You're not alone in polishing off whole discs without even realising it though. I'd imagine with Netflix it would be even easier to lose days at a time to that show.

There's no spoilers here but you're pushing your luck if the conversation goes on much further. When you're done, have a read through the 24 thread in the Tavern which da_man started a few years ago. It's a great read.

    24, lads. Bloody hell like

I was unemployed when I got into 24. I'd find myself lying on the sofa covered in peanuts and pringles bashing through four episodes at at time living through Jack Bauer.

I went through seasons 2 - 5 very quickly. The time just flies. When I'm off work, It gets to the point where you plan your day around the viewing - an episode with breakfast, one with lunch and at least two at night. Maybe more. Though I find that I need to take a break after each season. I get so into it that it's exhausting by the end. It's been a few months since I've watched season 5, so I've really caught the bug again and will probably dive straight into season 7 now.

It'll be interesting to go back to season 1 and see how it holds up now. I was going to dig up that 24 thread you posted once I've finished - scanning that thread originally was what made me decide to give the show a go. So many great moments that I want to talk about, but can't because of spoilers.

I bought the first season DVDs while at was at University for undergrad. Put it in, skipped class the next day and just kept drinking caffeine to stay up. I then went out to find season two. It was glorious.

My best mate told me about it and said I'd love it but I didn't bother. Then a couple of years later I was flicking through the channels and the first episode of Season Three was about to start. I watched it. By the end of the third episode I'd ordered the first two seasons on DVD and caught up with them whilst I was watching the third one, which did spoil a couple of things - not least the big twist at the end of the first season.

I must have introduced a dozen people to that show at least and everyone has loved it and raced through the seasons in no time.

So I'm about half way through series 2 of XFiles.

Absolutley EVERYONE in the world is in it. So many of the small parts are played by the sort of actors your go "Oh my god, that's Blah blahh from blahh blahhh..."

    Love it.

    Favourite so far: Braley Whitford.

Off to watch Reservoir Dogs tonight at the cinema. Looking forward to it. Wish they put more classic films on at the cinema. Any reason they don't?

In my area, none of the big cinemas with big screens play old films but there are small independent theaters scattered around that do play classics. They have Lebowski night and stuff like that. I almost never go to see an old movie though- why pay to see a movie I could watch on DVD, you know? So I suppose that's why they don't do it more.

Watching it at the cinema makes it a thousand times more enjoyable. I own all my favourite films on DVD/blu ray but would jump at the chance to see them on the big screen. Different experience I suppose.

I agree with that but I guess I just don't find the time or cash to go to them (or the friends who are also up for going). It can be a blast though if it's a cult movie and fans come out- on the aforementioned Lebowski night there were people dressed up in robes and they were serving white russians. Good times. I think that's the only one I ever went to though.

They show classics at the local indy theater in my area. I watched The Sound of Music in October. In the summer time they go to Mother's Brewery and have a showing in the back yard of the brewery. You're free to bring your own food, but of course you have to purchase their beer. They did Office Space and Anchorman, but I wasn't able to go to either of those. Heard it was a great time though.

From what I've seen they're simply not popular enough.

I went to see Jurassic Park and Back to the Future on both of their re-releases and they were empty.

I went to see Ghostbusters at both the cinema and an IMAX, and we were practically the only people in the theatre on both occasions.

Just got back, there were 3 showings of it today and in my screening I counted around 30 ppl. Would be interesting to see how many went overall. Good crowd, good time.

Because it is pretty expensive to get hold of prints and run them without making much money back on the screening, is the simple answer.

Surely that's no longer an issue now it's all digital.

The first time I saw BTTF in the cinema, about four years ago, Odeon seemed to just be running it off of the DVD.

Oddly as a counter to that, a friend of mine went to see it last night and recently uploaded a photo of the completely empty theatre the two of them were sat in.

On the second, I'd be very surprised if it was.

Pretty much every movie is stored/available in a digital fashion these days. The labs the distributors use have pretty much everything you could thing of stored digitally. It's how my whole business runs, and the labs I deal with deal are obviously the ones everyone deals with, from cinema to DVD to any medium you could name. Name a movie and I'll see if it's available digitally.

But then yeah, it depends if the cinema is set up for digital, and has the means/deals in place to be able to get hold of the movie in the first place.

I went to see The Lone Ranger today. I really enjoyed the flick. It is the fun popcorn flick that it depicts itself as. There are many problems with the script, and the twists are so obvious that their isn't a point in them being there. I went to see it with my father and grandfather. Both are fans of the character, and noticed little nods to the series. The action sequences are over the top, and highly entertaining. The sight gags are fun, and humorous at times.

I enjoyed Depp's performance as Tonto. Many people are comparing it with Pirates of the Caribbean, but I found enough differences in the performance. The mannerisms, delivery, and the somber overtones give the Tonto a different feel than Jack Sparrow.

3 out of 5 white horses.

Got to be honest, I think that I'm going to avoid that one. It looks trash.

I just had a mindfuck moment when I found out that Paul Thomas Anderson is married to Maya Rudolph. Did not know that.

Once you get past the first few episodes which are a touch slow justified is an amazing show. Boyd Crowder for a character that was supposed to be killed off in the pilot is possibly my favourite tv character right now.

The best part is they are $9.99 for a whole season. I got the first 3 seasons of Duck Tales too, as well as the ones mentioned. My kids are growing up on old school cartoons and not the drizzling shit that is on TV these days.

I picked up the first season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles today at F.Y.E. Just finished episode 1. I forgot how awesome this show was, kid show or not. On to episode two. Shredder is about to make Rocksteady and Be-Bop. This stuff is awesome.

After quite a while of feeling disillusioned with watching films, I watched My Dinner With Andre. I think I chose a pretty perfect time to watch it, and I'm still unsure about what to say about it right now, except I went for a walk afterwards and I was able to complete a lot of thoughts I've been having recently.

It's always a good laugh to go on IMDB and see what people are saying, most of it seems to be trying to work out if Andre was on drugs or mental and all the outlandish things he was saying, I really don't think he was saying anything terribly outlandish as a person, considering some of the people you meet in this life, I've met people who said stranger things and Andre acknowledges his hallucinations as hallucinations so there's not really a problem there. A great film where everything just worked for me and I didn't feel it dragging at all.

I'm still not over that James Corden thing though

What was that bit in Spider-Man 2 all about where he was going to fall in the burning building but the 3 year old child was able to pull him up?

I don't understand why people walk out of films. What else would you be doing? Same goes for sporting events. Stupid as fuck.
