That's pretty much how I saw it. Andre Ward is fucking great though, he needs opponents like Kovalev (who would murder everyone else) for people to appreciate was he does fully. I have no interest in watching Ward against the likes of Paul Smith. I expect his journey to cruiser/heavy will be well worth watching.

I don't see any chance of him going up to heavy and there simply aren't enough opponents at cruiser.

Andre Ward considering Adonis Stevenson fight

This would be a really good notch for Ward at this point in his career. But as the author states, rather dangerous bit of ring time too. Solid risk, big payday, exciting matchup, hope it happens.

Easy work for Dre if the fight goes down. No way Adonis steps up and fights ward. If anything we may get Stevenson/Kovalev next, which would be a better fight anyway.

Sure he would (Stevenson that is). And it's Ward's most reasonable next step. But I agree Andre should win it, just gotta avoid that one big left.

Would certainly like to see Adonis/Kovalev too, not sure where that leave Ward though.

Ward vs. Bellew at cruiserweight would be fun. Winnable fight for Ward at a higher weight and a sell on both sides of the pond. I don't see a good match up at heavyweight considering size, but Bellew is beatable.

Didn't mean to suggest there are no other options for Ward at that point, just not quite as juicy ones.

Well it would completely unify the division which is a big deal. Stevenson was on a great run a few years ago before the Kovalev talks fell apart. It'd be a great fight.

Ward vs. Degale only "sells" in the UK. Ward doesn't appear to have any drawing power here. That would be a lot of fun.

Stevenson is going to try and fight Kovalev. He is a known duck artist. I would be shocked if he signs to fight Ward after ducking a much better stylistic matchup in Kovalev for years.

Also the Manny Pacquiao fight on July 1st is now being broadcast on ESPN. Pretty smart move by top rank but I'm a little shocked that Pacquiao agreed to it without a pay-per-view bonus. ESPN must have paid big money for this.

Frazer Clarke was at the football (Derby County) game I went to yesterday calling out AJ for a fight at the stadium in the future. Now, I have never heard of him but a quick google tells me he is from Burton (close to Derby), But he doesn't even have a wiki (the true mark of a good fighter) So how is he calling out AJ?

Because anyone can call out anyone. You could call out AJ. GIve it a try.

Think I will leave that to Amir thanks. I mean this guy was on about the commonwealth games and a little more digging says he has medalled at a previous games and seems to be GB boxing's big hope for Tokyo 2020, Which means he couldn't fight AJ anyway unless I missed something?
Also they are sparring partners who fought at amateur level and Clarke was expected to win but didn't, I mean it was obviously all hot air, Just seemed weird trotting him out on the pitch to cut essentially a promo about bringing AJ to the stadium.

    118-110 I thought GGG won

Great fight but shame now all the focus will be on the judging

118-110 for Canelo is fucking silly. Very good fight though. Not quite the all-time classic, but a high stakes match that delivered with quality.

Had it 115-113 for Golovkin. Draw is actually acceptable though, for both the story of the fight and the resultant rematch.

No one else hyped as fuck about Loma vs Rigo?

Can't help but favor Vasyl's movement and dynamic punching, his age, size, and current peaking ability. But man if I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't turn into a trap being set for him by the gritty not-fucking-around Cuban piston thrower.

Lomachenko it's just a bit too big. Rigo has a chance but I don't think he's going to be able to win. I'm very pumped for this fight and the last couple weekends have been great for boxing. Miguel Cotto's retirement fight against Sadaam Ali was also pretty cool. Kovalev looked great against a game opponent the week before. Boxing is fucking great.

If this fight was 3 or 4 years ago Rigondeaux would have won easily. In all honesty, Lomachenko waited until Rigo was past his prime and it's still a risky fight at this point. Rigo had/has a speed and power combination that is ridiculous. I will not put money on this fight.

I was under the impression that Rigondeaux had avoided this fight once or twice himself already. Haven't followed boxing matchmaking to nth degree that I do mma so not entirely sure on the entire road here.

Do know that if Loma does his usual footwork circling to his right looking to land at odd angles against Rigo's loaded left hand the size difference is getting evicted from this fight quickly.

Who even knows. Everyone always claims the other guy is ducking.

I don't know who to favor here. Both guys look amazing often, and both guys have looked entirely overrated at times. If both guys come out at their best I favor Rigo slightly.

Incredible to see a guy as talented as him look completely disarmed and intimidated by an opponent.

    Anyone still watch boxing????

Pretty good heavyweight fight last night. Wilder should some heart, but also felt like there were shenanigans. Joshua would wreck wilder and it wouldnt be close.

Boxing's in great shape at the minute, the right fights are getting made and have since MayPac really.

Joshua would be favourite against Wilder, but it's not a foregone conclusion. He's the better boxer, comfortably, but I'd say the intangibles are similar in regards to power and vulnerability. He found another gear in the Klitschko fight but you wonder whether his cardio will always hold up, particularly when strength and size will be an advantage against Wilder so he could come in heavier. Best heavyweight fight on paper since Holyfield vs. Lewis.

Might be the best year in boxing in forever. Between that fight if it gets made (and the Joshua/Parker and Wilder/Ortiz fights), the Cruiserweight full unification between unbeaten fighters via the World Series thing, Light Heavyweight having Stevenson/Jack on tap with Kovalev and Bivol up for a unification bout, Super Middle having Groves/Smith (after Groves/Eubank), Middleweight surely being Billy Joe Saunders challenging the Alvarez/GGG winner, Light Middle having the Lara/Herd unification bout, then Crawford, Garcia and Lomachenko all scheduled for World title fights in higher divisions. A lot of stuff to look forward to, and while the alphabet soup is still prevalent, it no longer seems like politics will prevent top fights from happening.

Joshua should beat Wilder, he is a much better boxer. However he does get hit often and clean and Wilder’s power is raw and his finishing instincts are great. I would put Fury to beat Wilder 9 out of 10 times and Joshua 7.

Started dull, but that was a great finish in the Luiz/Wilder fight. Thought Luiz had him there. When he didn't finish him off, I feared the worst for him.

Also watched the Kell Brook fight, but that was a non-event.

Slowly getting back into boxing. Wouldn't mind seeing the Joshua/Park fight at the end of the month.

I just went to Valdez vs. Quigg tonight at Stub Hub Center. It was raining pretty hard and there is no covering for the audience, only over the ring.

Myself and 3 friends got full rain gear and went and watched the entire card in the slosh. Place was maybe a quarter full but the Main Event was well worth it. Insane fight live. I'm not sure if it came off quite as well on TV but both guys came out looking like badasses. Well worth a watch. It was on ESPN and Sky.

I'll make sure I catch it later. Glad you enjoyed it

    Kickass title fight between Lomachenko/Linares.

Linares hanging in toe to toe with the best boxer on the planet while the best boxer on the planet becomes the fastest three-division champ in history.

    Kudos all around.

Not too sure about escaped, but it was certainly heating up after the knockdown with rounds being exchanged.

I had Loma cruising through the first five, 10-8 in the 6th and 10-9 in the 7th for Linares, big bounce back 10-9 for Loma in the 8th, and another close 10-9 for Linares in the 9th before the combo and liver shot finished it. 86-84 total for Loma going into the final round.

Terrific story told throughout the fight for both men.

Lightweight has 2 unification fights on deck for the Summer, Lomachenko vs. Beltran and Garcia vs. Easter Jr. If Lomachenko and Garcia come through that, that would be a superb fight. Bantamweight has 3 of the recognised World champions entering the next season of the WBSS. Big domestic fights in the UK coming close with Frampton (if he wins at Windsor Park in August) against Warrington and Khan vs. Brook likely due to being under the same promoter. The sport is thriving at the minute, particular with the news that Eddie Hearn has signed a $1 billion deal for fights in the US, where he can guarantee big purses and therefore big fights.

What's interesting is that his tainted meat defense isn't entirely unreasonable. Mexican farmers use the substance he tested positive for in feeding their cattle and the NFL has actually warned players against eating meat in both Mexico and China for this very reason. Duane Brown, an NFL lineman, had a positive test overturned by the league on this same claim a couple years ago.

Who the fuck knows if he juiced or got a juiced t-bone, but ya, certainly hope he picks the chicken meal or dines stateside for the next few months.

It was a really good fight the first time around so I just hope nothing curbs it from happening again.

He also tested positive for such a small amount of it that it would be unlikely that he would’ve gained any benefit from it.

However, he did not deserve a draw. So it all works out in the end.

I had GGG winning as well, but not by the wide margin that a lot of people scored the fight. 118-116 if I remember correctly. Hoping that Canelo takes the rounds and flurries he had success with in the first fight and comes into the rematch with a sense of round by round urgency in applying those lessons. Don't really give a shit who wins, just want to see these two engaged toe to toe a little more often this time around.

Anybody watching Canelo vs. Golovkin? 2 great KO's by Lemieux and Gonzalez. 2 exciting world level fighters who needed big wins after big recent setbacks. Lemieux vs. Jacobs would be an absolute banger. Leaning Canelo in the big one, 2 great fighters but Golovkin has had a long career stretching into his illustrious amateur performances so is due to lose a step, and it was close the first time. Hope Golovkin wins though.

Great fight, but how have none of the three judges scored that for Golovkin? It was close, like the first fight, but he won it by 2 and at worst a draw again.

Thought Golovkin won the first fight but had no problem with a draw result.

Thought this was a textbook draw with not much problem with either man getting the nod.

Just a whole bunch of great boxing with the possibility for rounds 25-36 at some point.

    Hats off to both.

Great run of boxing coming up, with the DAZN deal in the US and BT in the UK providing competition to HBO/Showtime/ESPN/Sky. This Friday is Groves vs. Smith in the final of the WBSS at super middleweight, with the WBA and Ring titles on the line. Big domestic fight that I think is on ITV Box Office and DAZN in the US. The week after is Eddie Hearn's US launch on DAZN (competing with the McGregor fight) which features two title fights, Jessie Vargas in the main event and Jarrell Miller against the ghost of Tomasz Adamek. Day after is a strong card in Japan with 2 title fights, both part of the WBSS. 13th October is pound for pound great Terrence Crawford against unbeaten Jose Benavidez. 20th October is a legit middleweight title fight in Saunders vs. Andrade, with a strong undercard featuring Katie Taylor and Scott Quigg. Another legit middleweight title fight a week later in Jacobs vs. Derevyanchenko, with a couple more title fights on the undercard, as well as two WBSS fights at light welterweight elsewhere. Saturday 3rd November has a decent fight card in Scotland with Taylor vs. Martin and Burnett vs. Donaire, both WBSS fights, the latter for a world title. The 10th is Usyk vs. Bellew for the undisputed cruiserweight title. Then moving into December, Wilder vs. Fury on the 1st, Lomachenko on the 8th, Canelo looking likely for the 15th against Lemieux, and Warrington vs. Frampton on the 22nd. Excellent last three months of the year. I guess there's possibilities of Brook, Khan, Whyte and Chisora landing on a big billing on the 8th or 15th in the UK too.

As of November HBO will no longer be showing boxing. Heartbreaking. One of the staples of my childhood into my early early 20's was getting together with my friend and his dad who lived across the street and watch boxing on HBO. I can't even begin to tell you how many events we watched especially in the 90's, seemed like every weekend we were watching some top tier bad motherfuckers.

Great fight. Fury won 9 or 10 rounds so deserved the decision despite the knockdowns. Wilder's power is undeniable but he was outboxed.

How the fuck is Fury so quick at 6'8" 250+ lbs? Freak of nature.

Fury really has great defense. This is good because he seems rather chinny. He only appeared to have been genuinely punched like 4 times all night. Twice he was getting knocked down amd twice while he was on the way down.

Hmm don't remember him being in trouble apart from the knockdowns, the second one in particular. Also he seemed to recover well and actually be on the front foot at the end of the rounds (9 and 12?). Will need to rewatch though as it was a 5am job and I was/am fucking battered.

I was never sold on Fury before largely due to the John McDermott farce (albeit many years ago now) and getting floored by old cruiserweight Cunningham but I was converted tonight, he's fantastic.

Obviously with Wilder's outrageous power you should never count him out of any fight, whether it be Joshua or Fury II.

Nice to be talking positively about heavyweight boxing.

The card in favour of Wilder is an absolute disgrace. I think I had winning 8 or 9 rounds so at least the draw card would've only been one out (7-5 Fury - iffy but can just about see an argument). Giving Wilder 5 rounds beside the knockdown rounds is asinine. This is boxing though, and the word subjective has allowed judges get away with egregious scorecards for decades. Something needs to change though, too many bouts decided by morons.

The fight was entertaining. Fury amazed me. He must have a super charged brain. How do you spend 2 years on cocaine, lager and pies and keep the same mental reflexes? How do you get punched stone dead and not even wobble when you get back up. Freak. Wilder has to be credited too, big gulf in class, tired, frustrated, and he still finds his punch. As bad as the scoring was, he still loses the fight if he doesn't drop him in that last round.

Was there even a point to this exhibition? Other than to put eyes on Rizin? Like is Money trying to get in the mix (business, ring, both?) or what?

I had actually changed my mind quite significantly about this as Wilder had continued progressing and Joshua didn’t seem to be making any great strides. After being a big boxing fan for most of my life, lots of my friends have started following the sport just since the Joshua bandwagon started rolling in, but I have been increasingly suspect about his chin, his unwillingness to really test himself, his cardio, his fight iq and the lack of development/refinement in his technique.

Last night needs to have been a wake up call to him. He is far too hittable and too straightforward. There’s no way that he’s getting hit that often by an unrefined power monster with the reach of wilder and the ability to keep throwing so heavy, to not get knocked out.

Unfortunately what we’re probably going to get now is Joshua going a bit like Wlad and protecting his chin at all costs and muscling his way to victories. However, I still think Fury is unparalleled and would beat Wilder in a rematch and Joshua 9 times out of 10. I’d put current Joshua against current Wilder as lucky to take 3 or 4 out of 10 against Wilder. We need to see whether AJ is Lewis or Bruno...personally I still think that Lewis would dominate this HW division in his prime. He was a better boxer than Fury, but had more pop and finishing abilities.

That was always going to happen to him or Wilder before that fight could get made. Both exceptionally powerful but flawed boxers. Joshua showed me enough in the Whyte, Klitschko, Takam and Povetkin fights that he was no generational talent. Skilled, powerful, but ships too many punches and has to be too economical to sustain a performance over 12 rounds. Ruiz was the right fighter to beat him. I'd still favour AJ in the rematch as his team can fine tune him into a gameplan fit for Ruiz, probably extending him the distance by not overly committing to his power shots.

Fury is great, but I think his style is dangerous for guaranteeing wins on the scorecard. He doesn't land enough shots. To me he's clearly won his last 2 fights, barely dropping a round (knockdowns aside), but it's the ringside judges that matter. Lennox is an all time great, it's a shame him and Bowe never fought.

Heavyweight division is good at the minute in terms of competitive fights. Joshua, Wilder, Ortiz, Fury, Ruiz, Whyte, Parker, all guys that only have blemishes on their records from one of the others in that group. A few more in the chasing pack have only lost to one of them, or Klitschko, or are unbeaten yet untested. Domestically underneath the 3 there you've got Allen, Chisora, Dubois, Gorman and Joyce. Better than the Matt Skelton days for sure.

I think the only fight I remember seeing LIVE of his was the De La Hoya fight 20 years ago. Still, a legend and damn shame how he passed (hit by a car crossing a bridge for those that don't know).

Man, I remember watching the Chavez fight with my parents and some friends at my house like it was yesterday. The hype for that fight was huge. Had already seen him fight Buddy McGirt and got my hands on some old vhs stuff of his. Of course Julio Cesar was a monster legend at the time and rocketing toward 100-0. The fight being in Texas made it kind of an extra big deal in Houston. Most of the room, to my memory, was rooting for Chavez to rack up another one while I just wanted to see this wizard duck and dodge and tag the shit out of the legend. And then came the first time I'd ever experienced a shit decision in combat sports.

Whittaker is a large part of the reason I took the time growing up to seek out footage of Willie Pep and Ray Robinson and Henry Armstrong and why I loved watching James Toney in his prime and why I could really enjoy Mayweather despite all of his bullshit.

Yeah Pernell was a lot like Mayweather with the defensive boxing.

That Chavez fight.....I didn't see it live, probably never saw it actually, I just know that it was very controversial. The judges might have been thinking "Do we want shit thrown at us if we don't give it to Chavez?" lol. Because I swear man, anytime you had a fight go the wrong way with a strong Latino presence in the audience....chairs, cups, if it wasn't nailed down by Thor's hammer it was going toward the ring lol.

Manny getting another legacy defining win last night. Best win since what, Bradley? Third Marquez fight? Probably fights Khan in Saudi Arabia next, both getting big pay days. Manny stops him. I wonder if he's looking at the light middleweight champions outside of Munguia and thinks he could go for a 9th though?

Really really impressive stuff. This fight is going to elevate Thurman's game big time. He seems like a smart, genuine guy.

Hopefully he learns how to not let a 40 old midget beat his ass. Very odd decision to decide not to do any testing.

Either way, great fight and GREAT win for Manny. He really has to hang it up on that win.

But he won’t. Manny is phenomenal really. To be so competitive for so long across such a range of weight classes, considering he is still so fucking small. It’s not like he was a tall lanky fighter who filled out, he’s a bloody midget.

Heading to Staples Center for Spencer vs. Porter. Fun undercard too.

Holy hell that was a GREAT live fight. Undercard was excellent. Best night of fights in a HOT minute. I've been off Staples Center for YEARS for live boxing. Bad fights and worse crowds. This was different. OLD SCHOOL L.A. boxing crowd with tons of celebrities and wealth everywhere. Tons of people dressed to the 9's. Top flight night.

Really was a terrific main event. Porter made Spence earn every fucking point of that decision.

The African American boxing crowd has been dwindling for years here. Heavy latino crowds usually fill the LA Boxing stadiums. Last night was a very mixed crowd and the promoters can now confidently say that you can sell out arenas in Los Angeles again with 2 black fighters headlining the main event.

I also met one of the WBA belt handlers out front and he let me hold the welterweight title. Heavier than it looks. Was also a very cool moment.

Ignore my ignorance because boxing isn't really my thing, but with the death of another boxer, I'll ask a question I've always wondered; why do amateurs wear head protection and 'professionals' not?

As a casual fan myself thats a good question.

Oddly enough as a kid, Benn/McEllan was the first card I ever watched and I had fuck all idea what was going on.

Amateurs are given added protection - headgear, fewer rounds, and scoring method - simply because they're not paid professionals.

And pros don't wear headgear, or those other things, because that wouldn't make much money. And as they're pros they're in the business of making money.

The real question is, why do football players wear helmets?

    Total pussies.

Ruiz-Joshua II this weekend. I wouldn't mind seeing Ruiz get the W but I'm down for either. The winner faces the winner of Wilder-Fury II?

Absolute clinic by Joshua. Not going to win against Wilder or Fury like that, though. Would like to see the power of Wilder vs the chin of Ortiz soon.

Yeah Ruiz just couldn't get inside, he was chasing Joshua half the fight it seemed. Definitely agree he's not winning a fight like that against Wilder or Fury, the reach was pretty much the deciding factor without question. Those 2 won't have to worry about that. Personally I'd like to see Ruiz fight the loser of Wilder/Fury.
