As I was watching it on some dodgy Polish channel on my foreign satellite dish, I didn't have any commentators swaying my point scoring, so I was left to my own devices to judge who was winning.
In the eleventh, I stuck on 5 Live, and was surprised to hear that every commentator had Hopkins ahead by a couple of rounds, even DUKE THE DUKE MCKENZIE.
I thought, aside from those first couple of rounds, Joe's aggression throughout was enough to win it by a couple, as Hopkins dancing on the outside throwing a few quality shots each round wasn't enough to win it for me.
The scorers are even told, if a round is too tight to call, give it to the boxer who is trying to make the fight, something Calzaghe was doing throughout. All in all, WELL PLAYED JOE.
I know nothing about boxing, but I thought Hopkins had taken the win there. Chuffed when Joe won though. Liked how the interviewer basically pulled Hopkins up for pretending he got hit in the balls. Silly old bastard.

That was great, I had fiver on Joe in the eleventh so I was going mental when Hopkins looked a bit ropey in that round, annoying bastard stayed on his feet though.
I thought Calzaghe was the clear winner, Hopkins hit him with a lucky shot in the first and then he looked like he didn't want to fight. Some of Joe's flurries were breathtaking.

The fight was close for 6 rounds ala Calzaghe/kessler, but after that, Joe pick up the pace and won 5 of the last 6.
Hopkins fought a dirty fight and showed the type of fight that will give Calzaghe issues, his right hand landed on the target and he proved to still be the best fighter against south paws in the modern era.
He can take a lot away from this performance but ultimately going in, he needed to know that he had to punch as much as Joe to ever have a chance in the fight.
Joe showed a lot of composure and heart to come back after the initial knock down and start breaking Bernard's style down to the point that for the majority of the fight, he made Bernard's right hand a non-eventer.
I think if Bernard was being true to himself after watching this fight, he would realize he simply lost to the better man, his fight plan was perfect, he knew the things he had to do to beat Joe Calzaghe and this showed for the first two to three rounds where he upset Joe's timing and kept breaking up his rhythm... ultimately Joe was able to adapt and you have to give him credit for that
Joe adapted, started catching Hopkin's as Hopkins came forward behind the right and also held his own in clinches.
I thought Joe would've had an easier night if he let Hopkins lead more, ultimately this is where he was having the most success.
Very few boxers could have done what Hopkins did in there against Calzaghe and Calzaghe was still able to overcome it.
Also Hopkins was bang out of order in his interview and should have give Joe the credit he deserved.

Great win for Joe, not much to say that's not already been covered.
My view was Calzaghe threw more punches, landed more and with higher accuracy. He pressed the action more and was the ring general, no way did Hopkins win. Yes he landed a few nice rights but that was it.
I had it Calzaghe 8 to 4 rounds .
As for the Ref Cortez, how can he claim to be "fair but firm". Hopkins was a nut hugger, he fouled throughout the fight and he didn't do crap about it. The blatant headbutts were unnoticed and unlike the Hatton/Mayweather where Hatton couldn't even hold for 2 secs, he let hopkins hold the whole fight without a warning. I didn't know if Hopkins wanted to dance or fight, he just wanted to be close to Joe.
Also the fight was awful last night, both there styles just clash too much, no rematch please.

I'll need to watch the fight again cos it's all a bit of a blur, but I remember having Joe down as winning by about two rounds. But once the final bell rang I didn't think there was any chance in hell that they'd actually give him the decision. I went fucking mental when his name as announced.
The fight went kind of how I expected. Hopkins has proved he is awkward to box against, and he's only been stopped once in his career over fifteen years ago, so I never really thought Calzaghe would knock him out. Hopkins is right in saying Joe never actually hurt him, but I thought he deserved the points win for the way he recovered from the disasterous first round, threw and landed the most shots and continued to be the aggressor throughout the fight. Not a great performance but he showed plenty of guts and stamina against a really tough opponent.

Pavlik in the US then Jones in Cardiff would be fucking ideal. There's really no-one else about in that weight range who particularly excites me. I don't care much for Tarver, Dawson, Wright or Taylor. A Kessler rematch would probably be next on my wish list.

Calzaghe's a naturally bigger guy, is a better boxer and has a great chin. I think he'd come through it comfortably to be honest. Plus Pavlik's style would make it a much more exciting fight than Saturday. In terms of proving himself in the US it'd be a better fight for him than the likely Jones fight. Wouldn't make as many £'s though.
I honestly think Joe would beat anyone who he could realistically meet right now. That's not to say I think he'd beat Roy Jones 5-10 years ago, or even necessarily Hopkins back then. Unfortunately we'll never know for sure.

I don't think Pavlik could possibly do as little as Lacy did in that fight, but so long as Calzaghe could reach that level of performance again, he'd win. No doubt about it. I can understand why he wouldn't want to take the fight on though. Too much risk, not enough reward. He's clearly desperate to finish undefeated, and age is bound to catch up with him at some point.
Pavlik is as open to Calzaghe's strengths as Lacy was though, he probably just doesnt have the chin and the natural comfort of Lacy at that weight. He'd look very bad and make Calzaghe look very good.
Those of us who were panning watching the Setanta screening of this fight should watch the American version, they are so confident of how Calzaghe is performing that the result would never have been in doubt for us:

Oscar looks good and comfortable at 150 he is a natural welter, good 12 rounds workout for him.

Good nights work for Ricky. Result never in doubt, Lazcano did well lasting the 12. He's got a good chin but he wasn't dangerous. That's why he was handpicked in the first place. Hatton looked good in there though, it was a nice fight to get behind him going into the Malignaggi fight at MSG. Based on their performances tonight Hatton should beat him easily too, but Malignaggi is better than he showed earlier. Ricky will beat him though. Manny Pacquaio after that please.
Last night evidences why Ricky is a superb champion at LWW, but would never make it in the WW division and would likely be lucky to ever defeat Mayweather. His defense is simply not good enough.

All three of those fights would be immense. I agree with what Mik said in the other thread about Hatton's defence not cutting it at welterweight. Taking into account that and the lack of exciting bouts currently at light-welter, getting guys like Manny, Diaz and Katsidis to move up from lightweight has got to be the way to go.
There has been a lot of harsh criticism aimed towards Hatton after Saturday's fight. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was impressed with Hatton's speed, power and stamina. Fair play to Lazcano for taking all that punishment. I thinking people are just being negative for the sake of it. The 606 boxing message board is so frustrating to read.

I don't think you can argue about the calibre of opponents, take a look at any boxer, and it'll be highly unlikely they will have fought anyone of note in their first 18 fights.

The Khan fight was great entertainment, but there was really no need for him to get caught so many times. His extra speed and reach should have made it a comfortable night for him had he boxed like he did in the St Clair and Kristjensen fights. He needs to sort his defence out because you can tell he struggles to stay up when he's hit, but in terms of speed and power he's awesome.
The lightweight division is going to be amazing over the next couple of years. Campbell, D Diaz, J Diaz, Casamayor, Katsidis, Pacquiao, JM Marquez, Guzman, Valero, Khan, Romanov and a returning Morales will all be at the weight soon. Compare that to the light-welter division, which has Hatton and very little else. I'd be very wary of putting Khan in against any of the above right now. For once I actually agree with Warren.

Surprised no-one commented on Pacquiao destroying David Diaz the other week. On that showing I fear for Hatton when they (hopefully) meet up next year. The man is a beast. Edwin Valero up next for him apparently, who has 24 KNOCKOUT wins from 24 fights, 19 of which came in the first round. Unbelievable record on paper, but he's yet to fight anyone even close to Pacquiao's standard.

Yep I watched Pacquiao last week and again he was great. I'm wouldn't like to pick who would win between him and Hatton. That Valero has not fought in the States or something like that due to a license dispute for an injury he had.

John Murray just completely took apart Lee Meager in five rounds for the vacant British lightweight title. Remember the name. It's the first time I've seen him but he's only 23, he's undefeated and looks fucking impressive. He looked like he'd give Khan a battering to be honest.

I always like to watch one of these to get me pumped up for a fight, not that I need it for this one. Potential fight of the year. I think Cotto will ride out the early rounds with a scare or two but will eventually wear Margarito down with his superior skills and accuracy to win with a mid/late stoppage. Cotto-Round 9 is my prediction.
As for Lacy, I thought his fight against Jermain Taylor had already been agreed? For Calzaghe's relinquished WBC super-middle belt? Probably best Lacy does retire, he's been exposed big time. I'll never get bored of re-watching Calzaghe annihilate him.

Miguel Cotto outboxed Antonio Margarito early but Margarito got stronger as the fight wore on and finally battered Cotto into submission.
I guess will beat skill. Brawler beat boxer. Stamina beat speed. Underdog beat favorite. Cotto was rightfully the favorite because he’s the better boxer, has good power and commanding ring generalship. But it came down to who could take a punch better. The story of this fight was Margarito’s tremendous stamina and durability in a classic comeback victory.
Gutted Cotto lost but credit to Margarito.
20 bucks and well worth it. One of the best fights I have seen in a long time. This could make for an interesting series of fights, if Cotto ever wants to fight again after getting the fuck mauled out of him...
Margarito must pickle his head or something. Boy is a machine. Terminator-like stuff, there. Great fight. I'm kind of glad Antonio won it, because he's a classic fairytale story - fighting to make ends meet when just a lad really, not getting his moment in the sun for the longest time, so I'm happy for the man. It'll show Cotto something about himself as well, will teach him a thing or to, and the rematch will be very interesting because of it. Better than than the Casemayor fight earlier in the year and that was great too.Who gets the Oscar swansong, then? I've heard Manny wants it, but I think it'd be a weight too high for him.
Great entertainment the other night, loved every minute of it. I thought Cotto dominated early on and looked well in control after five rounds. Couldn't see him losing at that point, he looked quicker and was far more accurate, Margarito was punching air a lot of the time. But Margarito to his credit kept going at an amazing pace and just didn't slow down at all throughout the whole eleven rounds. Eventually he started to connect far more regularly and Cotto in the end just couldn't take any more. Beating Cotto into submission is one hell of an accomplishment. Brutal fight.
The Oscar swansong should be against Margarito now, but I suspect Oscar might shy away after watching that the other night. Pacquiao has said he won't fight above 140lb, so that leaves Margarito, Cotto, Mora and perhaps Hatton as his possible opponents, along with potential rematches with Trinidad or Mosley.

After weeks of speculation, rumors, monetary negotiation fall outs, and notable one-liners from trainers and boxers, it is now official.
Oscar De La Hoya will fight Manny Pacquiao on December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in a 12 round, non-title match.
The fight will be at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds and the pair will fight using
8 oz. gloves, as stipulated by the Pacquiao camp.
Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank held a teleconference with members of the media to announce the fight, now signed and set to round out the 2008 boxing season.
"I've thought about fighting Pacquiao for months," said De La Hoya, in the teleconference that included all the major players of the fight, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaeffer, Top Rank head Bob Arum, DLH and Pacquiao.
De La Hoya was evasive in stating that this will be his last fight.
When questioned of first signaling this will be his farewell to the sport, then today leaving the door open and not proclaiming retirement, DLH said, "My foot got caught in the door."
"I don't want (my retirement) to be the focus of this fight. I'm not going to mention it."
The proclamation of this super fight ended months of speculation and a list of possible opponents for DLH that included Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, and Sergio Mora .
De La Hoya finally picked Filipino sensation Manny Pacquiao, and "The Pacman" couldn't be happier.
Speaking to the media from his native Philippines at 2:30 a.m., Pacquiao said, "This is my greatest challenge. When I take that walk to the ring to fight Oscar, I will carry all the people of the Philippines- the entire country- on my shoulders. I promise I will fight with all of my heart and that I will give everything I have. Like my trainer Freddie Roach says, I have what it takes to win the biggest fight of my life."
De La Hoya was questioned as to if he thinks his size advantage, (DLH is 5' 10 ½" with a 73" reach advantage, while Pacquiao is 5'6 ½" with a 67" reach) will be able to neutralize Pacquiao's speed, the only viable advantage the current WBC Lightweight champion holds.
"Speed will be tricky. I have to find a way to increase My speed. I'll also have to work on ‘pulling the trigger', like Freddie Roach said."
Pacquiao's trainer, Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, has said recently that "this isn't the DLH of ten years ago," and DLH had a hard time "pulling the trigger" in his last fight with Floyd Mayweather Cinco De Mayo weekend in 2007.
Top Rank's Bob Arum, who promoted DLH in the early 1990's, will co-promote the event alongside Golden Boy Promotions.
"This fight has worldwide complications. The fight will be talked about all around the world."
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaeffer held the same sentiments, and also addressed the size differential and signing of the fight.
"This was the only (proposed) fight that got people talking." "One is bigger, but older. One is younger, and faster."
The last issue ironed out by both sides before the signing of the fight was the purse spilt.
DLH initially proposed a 70-30 spilt.
Pacquiao vehemently declined, to which De La Hoya counter-offered a 67-33 split.
It is not known the figure on which they both agreed to, as both camps declined to discuss the agreed amount.
Nevertheless, both camps are elated that the fight was finally signed, and now look forward to December.
"Manny Pacquiao is considered the best fighter in boxing today and I always want to fight the best," said DLH. "I am glad we were able to make this fight happen because while Pacquiao is at the pinnacle of his success and has defeated all of the top fighters he has faced, I am going to show the world that it stops with me. December 6 couldn't come soon enough."
Thoughts on this fight?
It's a very interesting fight to me. I'm afraid that Manny might not take to the welterweight limit and get picked apart by Oscar's reach and (presumably) greater power. However, I'd argue that Pac Man is the greater boxer, is in his physical prime, will be quicker getting in and out and should be able to out work Oscar for the points win. Pacquiao might have enough power to TKO Oscar if he puts the pressure on in the later rounds, while De la Hoya can probably knock him out with one great punch as is the natural weight advantage. I'd go Pac Man in a close points win, but it's a tough one to call.

If he beats Paulie in November, I guess he might fight the winner of this in Las Vegas next Spring. I know he wants to have a bout at Wembley Stadium before he retires but I wouldn't imagine Pac Man or Oscar would fight there due to the time difference likely eating into the PPV buyrate.

Neither can I. If anyone can overcome the size difference it's Manny, but I fear that his punches will just bounce off Oscar and cause little to no damage, whilst Oscar's left hook will knock him for six. It's a guy who used to fight at Flyweight against someone who has fought at Middleweight. Ridiculous really, but I am intrigued to see what happens.

I'm really interested to see how Pavlik does against old man Hopkins. No-one has ever hurt Hopkins, if Pavlik can go in there and wipe the floor with him he'll do what many others have tried and failed to do. It would still be a great scalp despite Bernard's age. Also were it to happen, the clamour for a showdown with Calzaghe would go through the roof, which I really want to see. But I imagine it'll be an ugly but clear UD to Pavlik which Hopkins will protest angrily about despite throwing about ten punches in the whole fight and none after the fourth round.
Diaz/Katsidis next week has the potential to be a belter. Every fight Katsidis is involved in ends up being entertaining. Hopefully he's learned from the Casamayor defeat earlier in the year and will stop charging in without any head movement. He was a sitting duck at times in that fight. It'll be an interesting fight because Diaz is the superior boxer, but Katsidis has the power to cause Diaz problems. Both fighters are coming off their first career defeats too, so the stakes are high.

Amir Khan believes Breidis Prescott has exposed his own limitations by predicting an early knockout in tonight's Sky Box Office clash.
The Colombian is predicting he will take Khan's WBO Intercontinental lightweight title away from him before 12 minutes have elapsed at the MEN Arena.
