If Villa don’t sort their shit out soon we could finish bottom at this rate. Kick up the arse needed ahead of playing the two teams below us.

It's weird. Villa have a solid, proven keeper, a couple of decent defenders and some really exciting creative midfielders. You're missing a striker obviously because Wesley has been shit, but you wouldn't have thought it would be this bad.

I think we are about five or six points off where we should have been to be fair. Trouble is now that we’ve let some unfortunate points slip, the pressure is crazy and if we lose the next two we could be proper fucked. McGinn out for three months now too.

Ridiculous from Son to get that red card, total lack of professionalism.

You can get 6/1 on Villa to lose the next two. Really not confident at all.

Seems like a fair few of the fans are wanting Smith out?

Or is it just the very vocal minority dickheads you have everywhere wanting any manager out whenever anything goes wrong?

Wonder how Mikel Arteta is going to sort out that Arsenal squad

New Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wants Napoli winger Dries Mertens, 32, with the Belgium international into the final year of his contract. (Calciomercato)
Arsenal are also considering a January move for Bayer Leverkusen's 27-year-old German forward Kevin Volland. (Sky Sports)
If either of those is true then Jesus Christ. Failing them selling both the lads up top this makes next to no sense.

Jesus, I am so embarrassed. No wonder Villa are in the mire, they weren't the theoretical European Champions at all.

From reports, he is apparently a lot tougher with players than he seems. I think it is in interesting appointment. The fans will give him more time (don't laugh) if he is part of a project rather than a 'quick fix' manager that Emery seemed to be.

Auba will only have a year left on this contract next summer and isn't getting any younger. If we cant get him to commit (and you cannot blame him if he doesn't) then we have to cash him in and bring in someone else - we lost Ramsey on a free and should have sold Sanchez for big money.

Lacazette is a bit different as he is younger and has a longer contract (2022 I believe). We should be keeping him.

Right but all being said and done if you sold Auba this month the gaping holes at the back and for a defensively minded midfielder are still the priority right?

You would still have Martinelli and Lacazette there. I'm not saying a replacement shouldn't be found but Dries Mertens is a winger/wide forward so you then have what him, Pepe and Lacazette up top. Ok how are things better?

Ozil going? Who cares.. use Nelson, Smith-Rowe and others

Yes, but it is still a lot of goals being lost - I would prefer that we do it in the summer so (hopefully) it can be planned properly.

If they see an uptick in prime membership and orders they are are happy and if someone decides to wacyh hack Ryan as well that's all good. People want to watch boxing day football so if they have this slot for a few years they'll make cash

@TraXX can’t believe we’ve won that. Feel sorry for you, we desperately needed a win and you should have been out of sight.

Formation change is needed. We can’t play with two DMs again, we are devoid of any inspiration. Grealish yet again unbelievable. Either a striker or a better winger needed in Jan - they just aren’t doing it up top. Watford away in two days, with their form I’m certain it’s a loss but if we start with the formation we ended on today we’ve got a good chance.

We're down, mate. Not even playing that bad, but just not taking the chances. I expect a fire sale in January.

Tactical question for those who know:

At a certain point, if Alexander-Arnold is this good, does it make more sense to convert him higher up the field to allow him to get on the ball more (ala Lahm or Kimmich) or is it best to just allow him to become the best RB in the world?

Tactically, can you "integrate" the fullbacks enough to make use of all the talent? Watching the way Liverpool play with him and Robertson, it would seem like the answer is "Yes, keep them where they are." But I wasn't sure if their was a natural "ceiling" that only allows them to do so much because of their position and responsibilities so really they should change positions

The way Liverpool play, there's no position TAA could play where he's likely to be any more effective. Because he's a wide player and Liverpool's midfield are a narrow, compact unit, the only real alternative would be if TAA was pushed into Salah or Mane's position as a wide forward which they won't do for obvious reasons.

The only other option is that Liverpool change their entire system and play with wing backs but again this would disrupt their wide forward setup with Mane and Salah, and honestly wouldn't really make TAA and Robertson's job that much different. When Liverpool are in possession those guys can get forward and they're quick enough to get back again if they lose the ball.

It's not totally impossible that he makes that change in the future ala Gareth Bale but I'd be surprised. He's an attacking full back and as shown yesterday he can be highly effective from that position. If there's any criticism of TAA it's his defensive work although it's getting better and he's of course very young still.

That is basically what I thought. But I just wondered because it seems like he has enough talent to just play as part of the narrow midfield too if they wanted. You would lose much of his crossing which is a strength but would that be replaced by other things like how Milner was a wide man who transitioned to midfield.

Another toughie for those interested, every Premier League goalscorer in 2019. I got 176 which I'm pretty pleased with honestly. Here's a free one for you - probably the most obvious one I didn't get was Willian.

God United looked utter shite. And with Pogba allegedly having surgery it's likely to continue looking like shite. There has to be some midfielder that United can buy this window so that Fred isn't our best midfielder.

Fuck. Our record signing has torn his ligaments. We now have Jonathan Kodjia (who looked knackered 5 mins after coming on yesterday) and Keenan Davis as our only strikers.

Fantasy result at Burnley and I’m glad Smith changed the system. Three centre backs worked so much better than the previous formation and Mings coming back in helped immensely. Grealish yet again magnificent, and Luiz looked so much more comfortable too.

We need a striker immediately. Even though he has scored 4 in his last 60, I’m convinced Benteke will score five a game for us.

Spurs have got worse. Awful team. They should go get Pochettino, he'd get them out of this mess.

Michael Oliver went over to the monitor there so it's just the PL that won't allow it?

I don't really get the monitor thing or why anyone cares which referee is looking at it.

If anything the fella at the screen already can speed it up.

I've heard three black players referred to as being notable for their 'pace and power' during this Liverpool/Everton game. One of them was Joe Gomez, for fuck's sake. So lazy. And the latest was Moise Kean, who also is not notable for those attributes.

The opposite of NBA players who are "gym rats" and "hard working" and "sneaky athleticism"

One guess what race they are describing when they use those phrases…

I saw a Key and Peele sketch about NFL players that leads me to believe this is an issue common to all sports. It's absolutely bizarre.

It's one of those things that once you're aware of it, you can't hear the phrase without it setting your teeth on edge.

None of our players have pace and power regardless of their colour.

    Or brains.

    Or balls.

    Or ability.

I dunno if it just caught me on a good day or what, but I thought the United/Liverpool game was one of the best I'd seen in a long time. Liverpool were fantastic first half and United barely clung on, but they battled their way back into it second half and the last ten minutes or so were really exciting. Capped off by that fantastic breakaway goal.

Aye, I tend to drift off during most games these days, but I really enjoyed that one too. I was hoping Utd were going to equalise by the end, just for the shits and giggles. I mean Liverpool should have been way, way ahead.

So, @Simon, how bad are things at Spurs, do you think? Really bad or all will be ok with an addition or 2?

For me, I am quite concerned for the reason that I just don't see us adding anything but loans. This Fernandes loan doesn't exactly excite. I mean, he wasn't able to get in the Benfica team, was he? That said, he's only 21, so lets see how it pans out.

And Eriksen. You know there's a good chance he's still there on February 1st. I don't personally see why he's getting game time still. I know we've been shit, but surely Lo Celso should have been getting more minutes?

I'm still of the opinion that football has passed Mourinho by, much like it did Wenger. And I'm talking about before he arrived at Spurs, can't judge him yet on the current job.

Fuck knows, I don't really know what is up with us at the moment. We just seem to be in a weird rut, but we can't just have become shit overnight. We definitely need freshening up though.

Alderweireld, Sanchez, Ndombele, Son and Kane is a strong backbone, and then the likes of Davies, Vertonghen, Winks, Lamela and Alli are all good squad players...but it seems like a lot of players have past their best fairly suddenly. I wouldn't be particularly bothered about losing Lloris, Gazzaniga, Rose, Aurier, Walker-Peters, Dier, Sissoko or Lucas, while the jury is really still out on Lo Celso, Sessegnon (come at me @Alex), Gedson and Foyth. That's a lot of players that I would have had in the 'keep' camp up until recently.

In terms of the first team I feel like we need probably four or five players just to be back competing at the top of the table, let alone challenging Liverpool who are miles away. A left back, a right back, a defensive mid and a backup/alternative to Kane are all essential.

Digging out a 19 year old with 5 Premier League appearances and being played out of position. One that scored away to Bayern Munich on his debut no less.

Ndombele looks a beast, but his fitness appears to be a real concern.

Agree with the players who could go and I wouldn't really care. Lloris was in dreadful form before he put us out of our misery by breaking his elbow.

It does seem like the majority of the squad have all had bad runs of form at the same time. And the contracts situation isn't helpful.

No idea what happened to Danny Rose. I think he'll run his contract down and retire.

I like the look of Sessegnon, but Mourinho is hardly a manager with a good reputation for developing youth. That said, he has no choice at Spurs and knew that coming in, so, who knows.

Not digging him out you horrible ape, just saying he hasn't cemented his place in our squad yet. He's no Brandon Williams, that's for sure.

Lloris, Rose and Dier were three key parts of our team a while ago and all have gone over a cliff form-wise over the past couple of years. Eriksen too obviously, with Walker leaving as well - that's half of a team either gone or no longer good enough, and none of them adequately replaced. This year it feels like Winks, Sissoko, Vertonghen and Lucas have all gone backwards, while Walker-Peters doesn't seem to have a future at the club. That's an awful lot of players not playing at the level they're capable of.

You can hardly moan about him 'being obsessed' with you if you're going to bring him up completely unprovoked just because someone said the word spreadsheet (a joke that is baffling to everyone except you and therefore totally unfunny).

Well you can see why I say that by what Alex did. It is pretty straightforward. Plus, ONE comment. Go and see how many I have against me from him after I post.

Watford on Tuesday is going to decide our season. Win and we stay up, lose and we go down IMO.

    Absolutely fucking massive.
I am absolutely petrified ahead of tomorrow.

We've just signed a lad called Samatta to plug the small issue of our squad having ZERO senior strikers. We look like we may be starting an 18 year old Yank called INDIANA VASSILEV on his own up top tomorrow night.

Win and we have it in our hands.

    Lose and we are FUCKED.

    Pray for us lads.

Saw that young striker at the weekend, fantastic name.

I was about to say that I'm baffled by how bad Villa are doing, but thinking about losing Heaton and Wesley has really fucked you...Grealish, McGinn, Mings and El Ghazi are all Premier League quality to varying extents but the rest aren't great.

Mcginn has been out for a bit too and even when he was there and they were playing well they seemed to keep dropping points from winning positions

Konsa, Guilbert, Hause, Trezeguet, Nakamba, Luiz, Engels, Targett all in their first season here and all 25 or under. Future is there if we can stay up.

I’m baffled as to how Newcastle are so high to be honest. They’ve fluked so many bloody points.

Haha it's fucking mad now how many lucky wins against the bigger sides they've had. Kept thinking it would correct and snap back but no sign yet

Aye but we'll see how things pan out this year. I'm still not convinced the clubs in particularly good health or moving in the right places and again that's bigger than hodgson (depending how much he controls transfers etc)

In my defence, that was true until the last two years of Dembele's career at Spurs where he suddenly decided to use his powers for good instead of mediocrity.

This midweek fixture list looks massive for the relegation battle. Brighton have quietly slipped back into the mix and reallly need a result tonight against Bournemouth.

I think Bournemouth will arrest their shite run with a win.

Wouldn't be that much of a surprise, even as a neutral it was infuriating watching Brighton batter Villa for 45 minutes then just completely fold as soon as Villa came back into it. You could tell a Villa goal was coming from about two minutes into the second half.

    Imagine lads.

    Villa beat Watford
    Bournemouth draw with Brighton
    Palace beat Southampton
    Everton beat Newcastle
    Leicester beat West Ham
    Spurs beat Norwich
    Man Utd beat Burnley

Then Villa are just 4 points away from the top half!

    Go on lads
