    is yours GOLD?

In the real news, nice to get a win on the board yesterday. Midfield was still pretty non existent so maybe a direct approach will work until we have new signings in place there.

4th () away game in a row this weekend, hope we can keep it going v Sheffield Utd. Looks like Guendozi could be off.

I know it's been against teams off form, but United are actually playing like good teams should against bad teams. Imagine if Bruno was signed before the season began. He has (and Pogba now that he's back) completely changed the team.

Greenwood looks the real deal. If they had got Fernandes in the summer they could have been a lot closer to City and Liverpool.

I still think they need an elite manager though.

He was sound for years and then just went properly mad (and indeed one eyed) at the end.

I think it's highly likely that Utd will overtake Leicester for the 4th CL spot. Could even get 3rd.

Great achievement if Ole can pull it off.

I think realistically we needed to win last night to have any chance of a late run for a CL place. Even if City get their appeal upheld 5th looks tricky, especially with Liverpool and Spurs coming up.

6th and a Europa place would be an overachievement considering how bad this season has been.

Thought we were a bit unfortunate last night, we should have taken our chances but the way Arteta has tightened us up at the back with the personnel we have is excellent. Luiz actually looks decent in a back 3 and Tierney looks class.

Will be interesting to see what changes are made in defence and midfield come end of the season as both need a fair bit of work to make us a threat again.

I think Chelsea has solidified themselves so I think 3rd would be tough. I'm thinking there's still a high chance of ending up 5th. The run in is theoretically easy but United are still making stupid mistakes leading to easy goals so dropping points is a possibility. It could all make that last gameday an exciting one with Chelsea-Wolves and Leicester-United.

It's really hard to say. You switch Ole with Klopp or Pep and United would still at best be 3rd. Maybe 2nd if Ole was in charge of City. The Liverpool and City squads were just that much better throughout the season. Now with a healthy Pogba, Bruno in the team things might be closer.

I'm not going to be blinded and say that Ole is the same class as the top tier managers. But he might be good enough to win the title in a couple years as the team continues to get better.

Will be interesting to see which of him, Lampard and Arteta do well. I wonder whether Spurs think they made a mistake by appointing Mourinho. Certainly looks that way.

I'm still laughing at the Mourinho appointment. Baffling from both sides. Just doesn't fit.

It's all a storyline for the Amazon doc, anyway. Last episode will be Pochettino's return.

Man Utd to effectively relegate Villa tonight for my accurate description of them being "potentially in decline" in 2011?

Interesting that my first ever season ticket (1995-1996) was the last time that Aston Villa beat Manchester United at home in the Premier League. August 1995.

May have jinxed him there.. price wise its what Brighton paid for Webster and I don't think he's worse than Webster but Jesus he was shite for that 2nd goal.

Brighton BTW must be over the moon with their cb recruitment dunk, webster and probably white is a great basis. Before you even get to matt Clarke

I honestly thought you sent that first one after the 2nd goal. Was not a great run of play for him.

The awful penalty really took the wind out of Villa's sails.

Thrilled that I only watched a few minutes in the middle. Arsenal must be relishing Sunday. My sister asked me if I wanted to watch it down the pub. I won’t even be watching at home.

Not only will I be glad to see the season end, but I also have no desire to watch them next season either. Unless Mourinho has gone, perhaps.

Generally speaking, I support the team through thick and thin, obviously. And I was always watching, even when they were flirting with relegation the odd time back in the 90s. But I have no time for this shit now. It's painful to watch, as anyone with half a brain knew it would be.

I'll still watch other games, like.

The north London derby on Sunday is interesting because if Spurs look shite and lose, Kane's going to force a move isn't he? They look well off the pace. Even though he's had injuries, HE looks well off the pace inside that Mourinho team without Eriksson. 12 months ago he was a shoe in for first name on the England team sheet, destined to overtake the records of Rooney and Shearer for England and the Prem respectively, and in a team that looked a signing or 2 away from winning the big trophies. Now, with Sancho, Sterling, Rashford and particularly Greenwood performing well, even the first of those is in doubt. The career is short, he has to see next year as a write off at this stage, suddenly he'll be approaching 30 the next time Spurs might kick a ball in the Champions League. His personal output is affected. He's gone surely.

I can't look past Liverpool, City, Chelsea and United as the top 4 for the next couple of years. This has been a transitional year for Chelsea with the transfer ban and Hazard gone, they've not fallen off, blooded players through and now signed quality for next year. United look excellent. I think there will be a drop off by Liverpool a la City this year but they should still be favourites. The chasing pack look well off the pace.

I agree on that top 4. There are structural issues at both Arsenal and Spurs. I do like Wolves and Leicester though, both very good sides so you never know.

United have definitely improved. Greenwood and Fernandes have really made a difference there. I still think next year's Champions will be either Liverpool or City as they have elite managers where there are questions over Lampard and Ole.

Obviously easy to say as a non-fan, but isn't the Championship more fun (as a fan at least) anyway?

Probably says something about my mentality that I would rather be a big fish in a small pond than the small fish in the big pond…

It's more competitive, and therefore there's more chance of a positive result. But the Premier League has the prestige. It has the limelight.

Being relegated sucks, of course, but it's the manner in which we have been the disappoints the most. We didn't spend millions in transfers, we couldn't afford to. We nearly went into administration a few years ago and the club do not have the money, and more importantly, the board recognised that and refused to put us back into that predicament.

This season was always a free hit. Unfortunately, it hit us back.

I guess I thought there was more coverage/respect for the Championship in England. In America, it is basically impossible to get games but I thought it was different for you guys.

I love competitiveness in sports (why I enjoy college sports more than professional sports in America). The Championship has always looked like a more fun league than the Premier League. Reminds me of "college football" vs "pro football" here in America. Every couple of years, I try to get into it but with no games to watch* and just stuff to read, I lose interest.

*(Yes, I know I can find games online. But I am am old man. I watch sports on a TV, in HD. Not on a choppy stream in Polish.)

It would be hysterical if UEFA just totally screwed City with the officials for the next game. You guys buy off one court so we will just use our own court.

Having read some of the detail of the ruling, City were actually fined for not co-operating with the investigation (and who could blame them after 5 separate leaks with sensitive information), but the actual investigation ruling was reversed because UEFA botched the investigation.

They didn't botch it as much as City just hid the evidence and lied about until the time limits ran out

Clive Tyldesley has taken this news well...

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-53404899

I could never stand him. He loved United, hated Arsenal his commentary when they played each other was horrifically biased.

    Sam Matterface is good though.

Clive Tyldesley is not only a great commentator, but a great human being. And even if you don't like his commentary, it sounds like this decision has come quite suddenly from his reaction and after over 20 years that can't be right.

Hes not a great commentator though is he? For me he's the main reason itvs football coverage is awful. Saying that matterface is fucking awful too

    My top 3

    1) Barry Davies
    2) Martin Tyler
    3) Alan Green
The staring contests were the best thing on big train. Actua Soccer 2 had the best commentary of any soccer game too. The BBC didn’t use him enough as they always preferred Motson for the big occasions.

Yeah that was weird. I always thought John Motson was overrated and actually quite annoying.

I hope you do win, I don't want Villa to go down, they are a proper football club.

To be honest though if you can't beat us right now then you probably deserve to go down.

We are proper shite. An idiot in goal, no midfield to speak of and two good strikers who are starved of any service as our first pass once we reach the half way line is to play it back to Pickford who will then just hoof it into touch.

There are rumours of some issues in the squad, mainly Ancelotti is telling them they need to work harder and they don't like it. I can't wait for a massive cull once the season ends.

We don't have any strikers who can score so this might be a terrible 0-0.

    Wouldn't shock me at all.

Your midfield should be able to run all over us, everyone else has recently. We are short in there anyway but have loads out injured too. Gomes and Davies/Sigurdsson are not athletic enough to cope with a proper midfield.

Didn't realize how big a game it was for Villa actually. The arsenal game could go either way, hopefully that West Ham game on the last day will have something riding on it.

If we fail to win tonight, we're down. We deserved something out of the Arsenal game earlier in the season, but we tend to shit ourselves against the bigger clubs so can't see much more - ideally the last game of the season could be an exciting one for all involved. But right now, we're 1/7 to be relegated, so there's little point in getting my hopes up
