Should we merge the football discussion threads? The other ones seem even more pointless than ever now.

I heard Axel only wishes to play for a team on the up, and not on the decline.

I'm fuming that I can't use my "Sarri is shit he has never won fuck all in a long career" go to argument now.

I had a 2-1 bet on Chelsea. I was more fuming that Chelsea scored 3 before Arsenal decided to get one back.

After the first half though, it had 0-0 written all over it. Crazy how 45 minutes can change things in an instant!

Have plenty of reservations about Sarri but thought this was a nice moment. For all the talk of him never having won a trophy, he started coaching professionally in the EIGHTH tier of Italian football having had no real career as a player to speak of and over the last 30 years has gradually worked his way up, league by league, gaining a number of promotions with different clubs, until finally winning a major trophy at the highest level. And you can see how much it meant to him here. A brief moment on his own behind the players looking over his medal. Touching.

Mad how much better Arsenal looked once Willock and Iwobi came on. Maitland Niles did alright first half.

Assuming we'll be seeing Reiss Nelson and Smith Rowe a bit next year too. Could be worse for Arsenal means they can maybe sort out that fucking wage bill which has been out of control for the past like 10 years

So much dead wood that needs clearing out.

    Ozil
    Mustafi
    Xhaka
    Miki
    Kolasinac
    Kos

As well as Wellbeck, Cech and Ramsey leaving. Big summer ahead.

I think Nelson will be in the squad next season, might be too early for Smith Rowe

Not surprising though. Big summer ahead at Spurs. And Arsenal and Utd, thinking about it. Huge.

Real Madrid are going to take the piss this Summer aren't they. Jovic is done. Hazard almost. Ferland Mendy at LB. Eriksen's said that and it's being reported that Mbappe has asked PSG for a transfer. All happening. 2009 all over again.

    And Pogba as well.

    Arsenal need:-

    Minimum

    New left back
    New centre half
    Replacement for Ramsey
    Probably replacement for Ozil
    Replacement for Wellbeck

    Nice to have:-

    Back up right back
    Winger
    Back up keeper

    Ridiculous!

Hello! As a Peterborough United fan, I have been used to many lows and very few highs (Wembley wins and a famous victory over Liverpool) but the upcoming season really has to be the one. With Mo Eisa signed for a club record, 5 signings already, I don't know whether I should be feeling optimistic or scared, because as Posh fans, we don't really know what success feels like....

As good as Eriksen is on his day, he's always struggled with consistency. I don't want him to leave, but looking at the upside if we can sign a decent replacement (Maddison maybe?) and have some money left over to improve other areas of the squad (right back, centre mid, maybe a striker) then we could end up better off for him going.

Before we even consider any big names leaving, we definitely need a right back and at least one centre mid. After that, it looks like there could be a lot of turnover in the side this summer - Eriksen, Tripier and Vorm look set to leave, there are question marks over whether Alderweireld, Wanyama, Aurier and Llorente will stay, plus we can assume that Janssen, N'Koudou, Onomah, Carter-Vickers will go if there is sufficient interest at the values we put on them. Huge, huge summer.

NARRATOR: There would not be a lot of turnover, and it would not be a huge summer - with only Michel Vorm leaving, Tottenham's only signing of the summer would be a one-year extension to Fernando Llorente's contract.

Andy Carroll too. So basically all of the England striker options from 2012.

I'll guess at Welbeck to Villa, Sturridge to Leicester, Carroll back to Newcastle.

Rumblings around the area seem to point to Sturridge going back to Villa.

I couldn't cope with Welbeck at Villa. He's one of my favourite players, it'd break me.

I wouldn't have thought Sturridge or Welbeck fit into the Smith signing criteria at all. What's the point in getting an injury-ridden guy on shitloads of money, really?

Yeah don’t get if Villa want Sturridge. Seems like a West Ham or Leicester signing.

Going to miss the fucker, loved watching him and the rat score for fun during that season. When he’s fit, he’s a quality player.

I don't think the past will help predict Smith's criteria. He wouldn't have had any say at Brentford, and at Walsall he was restricted to young players by the budget.

The Jota signing suggests he has a good deal of input at Villa and his first signing is a 28 year old with a handful of top flight appearances.

Spot on Alex, the Smith signing criteria Rosk mentions is Brentford's signing criteria that's unlikely to follow with him. Look at what we do this summer now Smith's left and it'll be no different because it's all Benham and co led. Doesn't surprise me that his first signing is a bloke we picked out of obscurity already. Gives the press an easy transfer story to link Villa to anyone he used to work with though, Josh McEachran rumours have already started

What's the deal at Brentford at the moment? Read an article a while back about Midjytlland and how they went full Moneyball and mentioned the owner being the same. Have they tried to implement much of the same stuff?

Harlee Dean basically noshed Villa off in an interview the other day too.

Smith’s only signings have been Hause on loan (23) and Guilbert (23). He has said shit about only wanting players who can come in and improve their game at Villa and grow together. I can’t see knackered old Sturridge fitting in.

I think they pretty much have. Didn't they pretty much sack Warburton because they said results were better than they should have been AKA he was being really lucky and that's also why they kept faith in Thomas Frank when the start was so shaky because they trusted the stats that the corner would be turned?

The reinforcement of the squad begins with signing up El Ghazi for £8m. Fantastic - key in that second half of the season and a livewire on the left. Now for Mings. Please. God. Let us get Mings.

This is he most excited I’ve been for years now. It’s nice going into a transfer window and seeing cool names being rumoured. Hear we’re going all out for Butland. Fee sorry for Steer but our back ups are cack. Also rumours for Maxi Gomez, Fornals, I know some are unrealistic but fuck me it’s good to be back. Just hope we don’t do a Fulham

£23m for Butland sounds about right. He's England's no. 2 despite having played in the Championship for a year. Bit of an indication of his talent.

That said, bugger off is he going to the buggering Villa.

It's a decent price for sure. He still looks a little more hesitant since the injury but think that'll come back with time. Excellent player.

Northern Ireland won 4 on the fucking bounce lads. FOUR.

We still have no chance as we're probably in the single hardest group going but fuck me it makes you proud. Wonderful acheivement.

Also fuck Middlesborough for wasting Paddy McNair so bad

I would obviously be very happy with Butland.

Butland, Mings, Grealish, McGinn, One Great Striker, that's a bloody good spine if we can get it.

I'm getting increasingly worried about Mings. The absolute most important signing we can make right now. Apparently the fee and wages have been agreed, but rumours are flying that his missus doesn't want to move. Please don't do a David fucking Unsworth. We need you big man.

Honestly I did feel a bit sad. He's bloody amazing isn't he though? 17 seasons in the premier league. 112 caps as well. God I bloody love him.

I mentioned him here as the most under-appreciated PL footballer of all time. It sounds mad but just the amount of time he played, how well that Fulham defense was and just how bloody lovely he was.

Let's do a quick show of hands. Who thinks Lampard will go to Chelsea?

    <raises hand>

Let's do another one. Who thinks it actually isn't as mental as the press say it is?

    <raises hand>

I think with Hudson Odoi you saw a fanbase who actually are valuing playing youth players over a lot of things. A club which probably needs to be a little more self sufficient incase Roman does piss off and who may not be able to sign any new players for a year. Sarri isn't particularly liked so instead you get gorgeous Frank. Man of the people. He gets to win the European Super Cup and probably brings Didier Drogba onto the coaching team. PERFECT

Assuming he got it I would assume you would be seeing (injury permitting)
    - Reese Brown
    - Tammy Abraham
    - Kurt Zouma
    - Mason Mount
    - Jay Da Silva

And others in the squad. Morato, Luiz and others sacked off. Kovacic maybe not signed.

It would be bloody exciting and I know a lot of people want to talk about Ole Gunnar etc fair enough I just think Lampard will become a very very good coach in time. Very clever and astute. Only issue is this is probably 1 or 2 years too early for him but you cant turn it down. Chance may never come again and it's his dream job. You have to back yourself

With the transfer ban I don't think it's particularly mad. Fans have been calling for us to actually make use of this excellent academy we've got for a while and the indications are that the club have finally begun to listen. Jody Morris worked in the Academy for four years. As Rio Ferdinand said, he and Lampard will know the kids from 16 and up a lot better than an Allegri or Laurent Blanc or whoever. Previous managers have clearly felt like making use of the homegrown players too much was a risk not worth taking. The standards are high and if you slip below those you'll be out the door in a heartbeat. Understandable that you'd start an out of form Willian or Moses over a Hudson-Odoi for a league game against an opposition you should be beating when that's the environment. I guess it remains to be seen how much slack Lampard will be given but now the time would be to make use of those players when others are leaving and we can't sign any replacements. Unfortunately the top three Academy products we have are all out with serious injuries and it may be some time before we see Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek and Reece James again. And whether the first two will be quite the same players at that. Aside from those three I'd hope to see a fair bit of Abraham, Christensen, Ampadu and Mount - but a loan for Ampadu might be the best strategy at this stage.

Lots of people wanted to see Jay Da Silva in the squad but the last I heard Bristol City were looking at signing him permanently. I'd like to see Zouma back. Looking at the squad we might actually be more suited to going three at the back with wing backs and so he'd be useful in that case (Alonso, Emerson and Zappacosta would all probably be more useful in wing back roles, Azpilicueta better as part of a back three at this stage).

On top of this we need to look at the transfer policy when we can sign players again because it's been all over the place since Emenalo left his role as technical director and we haven't had anyone in place since. That looks to be changing with Petr Cech supposedly coming in as sporting director which I assume will be a similar role with a different name. Him being there is another reason Lampard coming in might not be so absurd as they know each other so well and were teammates for so many years. £420m on Bakayoko, Rüdiger, Morata, Drinkwater, Zappacosta, Barkley, Emerson, Giroud, Jorginho, Kepa and Pulisic. That's shocking. We should be able to generate quite a bit of cash from sales this Summer though. Already brought in over £100m on Hazard (initial £90m), Aina (£10m) and Angban (£5m) with Batshuayi, Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Morata, Zappacosta, Kenedy, Zouma and others all potentially bringing in more.

Of course the week I'm going to be in England is also the week of the first Europa league game meaning that I won't get to see United in a second PL game (most likely). Maybe I'll get to see a glorious Thursday night in Manchester like I've always dreamed...although it would mean going back to Manchester midweek.

Ah well the Leicester game at home on the first Saturday means I'll get to see a game at Old Trafford unless I get completely fucked and they move that game to the Friday but surely that's not likely...right?

Around Sept 14-22. Will likely be flying into Manchester on a red eye and then the rest of the trip will be in London. So basically any time. My wife knows I need to see the boys from Rajah and after meeting Mikey she is less sketched out by the idea.

Villa's (hopefully) shrewd Summer transfer window continues with getting Hause in on a permanent from Wolves at £3m. One for the future and a very able back up.

    IN:

    Jota (£2m)
    El Ghazi (£4.5m)
    Hause (£3m)
    Wesley (£22m)

    Rumoured:

    Butland
    Mings
    Targett
    Lolley
    Phillips
    Benrahma

    Out:

    Elphick
    Gardner
    McContract
    Hutton
    Adomah
    Jedinak
    Richards
    Whelan
    Bunn
    De Laet

Wonder where he will go next. Much better bet for Chelsea than Lampard.

As for Newcastle, they'll get some Championship gump now as no Premier League manager would see them as a clever move surely. Big expectation and no chance of meeting it because of Ashley.

Mad that Arsenals supposed transfer budget is only 50m. I mean what in the fuck is that about. Purely down to wages?

How can they be in financial trouble? Arsenal fans are mugs. Busy shouting at Wenger and everyone else but still paying stupid amounts for tickets which keeps the real snakes in the club

Wenger definitely fronted a lot of that heat, for sure. Owners aren't putting a penny in, and we have not been in the CL for 3 seasons, guess that has impacted the bottom line significantly.

A lot of wages has been freed up already by Cech, Ramsey, Wellbeck and Liechsteiner leaving - though moving on Ozil would make a huge difference.

I saw Torreira has been linked with Milan. That would be a shame, he has looked very promising. Hopefully we get at least £50m+ that we can reinvest if we do sell him.

Wenger sitting on his pile of money, laughing away at the Arsenal fans who gave him so much shit for 21/23 Top Four finishes.

We're being consistently linked with this Ndombele fella, but it looks like he's touting himself to bigger sides. Looks like it's gonna be a frustrating summer, at least in the short term.

The Ndombele stuff on Twitter is bloody constant. I say he ends up at Juve.
