Now Zouma getting racist abuse on twitter? I don't doubt there are enough dickheads knocking about but the sheer volume lately is mental. Is it just being flagged more in recent weeks? Either way clearly something needs to be done but what?

Feels like eventually we are going to have an "official" social media accounts for every people. Make people prove they are real and responsible for their actions to have an account.

I don't like it but it feels like that is where we are heading

I heard a potentially decent short-term solution which at least protects people even if it doesn't stop people from being racist - have a two-tier Twitter where you can either have a normal account as they are now, or a verified account which confirms all your details. Then people can choose to only view posts from verified accounts if they want to. As I said it doesn't stop people being racist cunts on the normal accounts, nor does it punish people who say racist things (and the current system is not fit for purpose on this), but it at least allows people to protect themselves.

Do you all realise how many players, honest to god first team players, that we have injured right now?

We have beaten the champions. After everyone wrote us off and took the piss.

I see that this kid Donyell Malen who has a 1 in 2 record for PSV and the Netherlands is yet another that Arsenal let go over the past 5 or 6 years that would've been a first team player for them. They've been so bad at providing a pathway to their first team.

You bring this up from time to time. Wasn’t the last one you had a moan about Benik Adobe?

What on earth leads you to believe he would be in the team ahead of Lacazette and Aubameyang? Nevermind Martinelli or Nketiah.

The big one was Serge Gnabry who couldn’t get a game ahead of Walcott and Chamberlain when he was better than both.

The bigger question last year would’ve been why aren’t we producing players that are actually good enough to break into the first team, but now we have Willock and Nelson in the first team squad with Smith-Rowe and Nketiah likely to joint them next season.

Arsenal have much bigger problems that their perfectly decent record of making money from academy players, especially with a few breaking through this year.

You sold him for 1.5mil and a year later he transferred for 10mil. It was a massive cock-up.

With big sell on clauses for both. That’s not a fuck up, neither we’re going to get games at Arsenal so they were sold. Then they transferred to lesser teams and we got even more money. That’s just how football works.

And how many players have we bought cheap and sold for mad money? There isn’t enough places in these elite squads to hoard players. All the ones you mentioned we made profit on then made even more when they were sold again. Would Bennacer have gotten in the team then? No. I don’t remember a huge bidding war for him. Would he get in the team now? Probably not.

It's indicative that Arsenal don't appropriately value their youth players financially or in terms of a pathway to the first team. You used Nketiah as an example, so why isn't he getting a game at Arsenal?

I feel for him as he’s basically got to score our goals. He’s a unit and will have a great career I’m sure but it’s so much pressure on him to lead the line when the wingers are not doing him many favours. I’d possibly like to see Jack move up in place of one of them and get Luiz and Marvelous to patrol the midfield.

Was thinking more that he will have scored his only goal against us. We are great for strikers who are crap or going through a bad run.

I am still fuming about Flores who used to play for Derby in the 90's/00s scoring his only goals against Everton and he wasn't even supposed to be here as he was on a dodgy passport.

Jack plays behind him, he’ll get goals. Just won’t the way we are set up. Our defence is good, central midfield good, it’s just attacking we are lacking really.

Out of the relegation zone though so every cloud and all that.

Looks like Bernardo Silva may be in the shit for a tweet to Mendy

The stupidity of posting that publicly ffs. I completely accept that most likely this is a joke between them that doesn't offend or upset Mendy, same as the video Bernardo posted, the context of their relationship defines whether or not it is offensive to the player...but posting it publicly is just so incredibly stupid, he should know that as someone with a public profile everything he does that separate, public context, and a joke like that has a completely different meaning to the millions of black people who don't know him or his intentions. Idiot.

Gutting result yesterday. That's two games on the trot we haven't been able to take advantage of ten men and build on a strong first half performance. The obvious handball aside, we should have got more from that and I hope it doesn't deflate the team too much as we have been competitive in every game we've played thus far. We sat way too deep in the second half and should have brought subs on earlier as the midfield were knackered.

Beat Burnley next week and the confidence should come - but fail to get a result and we're gonna start to be a bit desperate for a win.

It's hard to take a step back and realise that less than a year ago we were being outplayed by QPR and Sheffield Wednesday, and now we're gutted not to have walked away from the Emirates without three points.

That handball has to be a turning point for VAR, even at this early stage. If VAR isn't overruling decisions like that, there is really no point in having it - the number of refereeing decisions each season that are more obviously wrong than that one is vanishingly small.

We've been fucked by VAR twice now. The Palace "goal", this joke - how your goal at 1-0 up can be knocked off, but those two decisions were made, is mental to me.

    Which was the Palace one?

Son's goal being disallowed seems ridiculous, but this is the situation we've created by demanding VAR - offside isn't subjective in the same way a foul or handball is, it's factual (notwithstanding the issue of whether the technology is good enough to accurately measure distances as small as the one on Saturday) so, if you decide you want VAR, you have to accept that it will make decisions based on even the finest margins. If you want it to only decide on 'clear-cut' offsides, you will end up having the same argument, only with the margins in a slightly different place - is six inches clear cut? What about five and a half? And then you end up with the same problem.

I don't think there is any ideal answer to be honest. 'Daylight' is completely unworkable - it has the same issue I mentioned above (it doesn't fix it, just moves the margins slightly further up the pitch, with arguments over millimetres of daylight) with the addition that the ability to see daylight changes based on where the linesman's view or camera angle is. So really the options IMO are either go back to the old system of trusting the linesmen to do their jobs and accepting that they will occasionally make mistakes, or stick with the current method and accept that decisions will be made down to the tiniest margins that can be accurately monitored by the technology. Either way it's a compromise, personally I'd go with the traditional method.

    .
Doesn't that make it just as subjective as handballs and fouls then

Grealish goes on a run, Cahill lunges in, Grealish gets the ball away at the last minute and goes down (not screaming for a penalty and actually gets up) - Lansbury shoots first time and it goes in. Ref deemed it as no goal.

Apparently, after the ref blew up for that and chalked the goal off - VAR couldn't intervene. What's the fucking point.

Handball in front of the goal yesterday at 3-2 down, VAR didn't intervene. What's the fucking point.

That's why it isn't workable like I said. At least with the current system it is as close as possible to objective (though as mentioned before you still have the issue of the cameras apparently not being up to the standard required to definitively say whether someone is offside when the margins are as small as on Saturday). Introducing the idea of 'clear cut' and 'daylight' takes it further into the realm of subjective.

Oh yeah I remember that one - that wasn't a VAR issue though, that was a refereeing issue, he blew too early. The rules of the game clearly state that once the referee has blown his whistle the game is dead. VAR couldn't overturn that decision because the goal came after the whistle was blown, which has to be the case because the moment the whistle is blown every player's actions will be different. It was a slightly weird case in that incident because the whistle was only a moment before the goal was scored and so almost certainly didn't affect the outcome, but I think the basic idea that the ball is dead once the referee blows his whistle has to be the case. Terrible decision and unfair to Villa, but it was the referee making a mistake rather than a problem with the rules.

I fully accept that Arsenal’s first choice defence will be almost entirely different to what we’ve seen so far this season but if it doesn’t improve after Bellerin, Tierney and Holding come in then Emery will be in real trouble.

I’d like to see us play a midfield three of Guendouzi, Torreira and Ceballos for a few games in a row. No dedicated 10 or holding midfielder. Think it could work similarly to Liverpool. Xhaka and Sokratis need a break.

I don't think it matters on personnel in defence at this point. The issues are structural and the fact that we always play it out from the back.

    Lol at Spurs

Nah. He was putting his arm behind his back. Only purposeful handballs should be called penalties. I'm also OK with the rule the other way how if an attacking player even accidentally hand balls it the goal doesn't stand.

Shocking raise of the flag by the linesman rightfully overturned by VAR.

That's hardly Maguire's fault, as a few people have been mocking on social media. You can't expect such an errant pass in possession from your own teammate in that situation.

It may not be his fault but why is he putting his hand up. Why does he think he can play PEA offside at that stage, it's poor decision making and lastly which isn't entirely on him but what fucking shape is that defense.

Also he fucking walks back to the box after it as well. It was poor from him.

Tomori's probably been our best player the last few games. Been beaten in the air a few times and almost gifted Lille a goal at the end last night but apart from that he's looked class. His pace is unreal. Times his tackles to perfection and his passing has been mostly excellent. Glad to see him get a call up. Was hoping to see more of Abraham, Mount etc. this season with the transfer ban but Tomori's been a bonus. Was on the verge of joining Everton on loan before Luiz left. In Rüdiger's absence he looks our best defender and is likely ahead of Christensen and Zouma already. More Chelsea players in this England squad than any other team and I'd have thought it won't be long until CHO is in there in there too. Would say James as well but England are stacked at RB.

Yeah, for both of us. It was embarrassing, and not even the injury list excuses the performance. Instead of galvanising the squad, the Man City result seems to have lead to some complacency and that is worrying. I was optimistic at the start of the season but now it's starting to feel like another relegation campaign.
