I liked Season 5 but I felt it didn't really go anywhere. It was so slow until like the last 3 episodes.
The season finale felt like it should have just been a break so we could see the rest of Season 5.
I *loved* the Jordan Chase character. But the season suffered from being a bit disorganised. In particular, the beheadings that Deb was investigating and the young latin cop sort of just....drifted into oblivion.
there was some advancement in season five. you had him dealing with rita's death and the kids, teasing the idea that he can break down and become a murderer with no rules, again opening up and showing who he really is and this time being accepted instead of used, only to have it slip away from him once more as well as another close call with deb. but i must say, it's definitely not a particularly strong season. this season has promise, though.
also, apparently colin hanks has been cast in a unknown part. to be honest, i'm kind of sick of them bringing in 'familiar' actors for central roles each season. you just know that they'll either end up dead or gone by the season finale.
The season is fine. But it's much more difficult to hook people with a promo like that, so it's easier to show bits of all the seasons.
Plus a lot of S5 was Dexter dealing with personal issues from the first 4 seasons. Much more of a reactionary season (though was fairly necessary) than an actionary season (which works better in promotional material).

gonna be honest, i'm not OMG EXCITED for this as i have been in the past. as much as i love the show, i really think it's time they start thinking about winding the story into it's conclusion. granted, this season could be another season four and floor me, but even still.
I love Edward James Olmos, so that has me pretty amped.
And, is that Tom Hanks kid?
Season 4 was the best tv I've ever seen.

Season 3 was the weakest for me but still watchable. Really no problem with 5. It was going to be different given how awesome season 4 was.
For me its 4,2,1,3,5.
5 wasn't bad per se, it just had a lot to live up to. Which nothing could've to be fair.

The first episode of season 6 has been leaked already, watching it now.
It's a good opener, watched it a couple days ago.
Mostly just a generic episode but obviously the serial killer arc is back. Something religious this time around.
i'll likely watch the leak, since i'm not all that amped up about this season of dexter, and especially not when the season debut coincides with the second to last episode of breaking bad.
I will note that the leaked version is full quality with no numbers/text or any bullshit. It's the same as what I'd have torrented on the day.
I actually agree with Bert. I think the last season was actually one of the better plotlines but it was protracted and very anticlimactic, the complete opposite of every other season.
I hope they return to the fast building, action packed thrill ride that Dexter is so well known for.
Jordan Chase was a great character, Lumen not so much.

Watched the entire series this summer. Only took me a month and a half or so. Can't wait for Sunday.

I suppose it was a decent start to the season. Nothing jaw dropping. It's going to take a few episodes to sell me on the new villains. My favorite moment was watching Dexter try to dance.

Exactly. Too much attention on her in a subtle way, like the reporter from season 4 who turned out to be Trinity's daughter.
Last season I thought that there was too much attention on the new nanny for her not to play an important role later. Turns out, she was just a nanny. Unless the new nanny this season gets involved with something that the old nanny from last season was meant to do, but got replaced.
Anyways, I enjoyed this latest episode with the old man from Robocop and Total Recall. Good character actor.
I was not expecting Dexter to drop his blood samples. Poor guy.
As for the horsemen, kinda weird.
I was left wondering why he was so stressed about the slides. I mean I get it, losing the order and not knowing who was who, but at the end of Season 2 he lost all his slides for good and had to start a new collection anyway.
One thing I noticed was he was up to like 42 for this new collection which is like 3 years old, but his old collection had maybe 30 in it from all the preceeding years. Thinking too much about it?
probably. plus, there's always the chance he's had multiple boxes since he lost the other one.
and i don't understand why you're wondering about the stress with the slides. he was stressed when he lost them the first time, especially when he found out doakes had them. yeah, he had to start over, but considering his starting over was thanks to the fact he wasn't caught and was able to go back to killing, i'd say that outweighed any stress he had. also, that was a start over out of necessity whereas this one was his clumsiness ruining things. just because you've had your car stolen once before doesn't mean you aren't going to feel like shit when you total it in an accident.
I also think the new new babysitter (Batista's sister) will have a part to play.
When Harrison kept saying "Daddy's box" or something and pointing at the AC, I was thinking that maybe at some point he'll point at it and she'll find them.
Then when he dropped the slides, I thought he might miss one one the floor and she'd find one.
We're only a few episodes in and the speculation has started already!

My wife got me into this show. I just got into Season 2 where Rita's husband had an "incident" in jail.
People claiming this Season has been bad need to pipe down in my opinion. Lila was the low point by a wide stretch (though I'll admit that everything around her seemed to drag the quality up and she didn't matter all too much).

Interesting kill at the ends of last nights episode. I didn't care for the acting of the cop who hit the wire though. I mean the girl dies and a second later that cop seemed collected enough to wonder what that other noise was. I'm pretty sure if I had just killed someone (even if by accident) I'd have to leave the room.
This season really is going back to Season 1 in tone, with the Doomsdays taunting dex in the same way the Ice Truck killer did. I like it.
There have been a few callbacks to Rudy/Brian too. I'm loving it.
Definitely gotten better the last couple of eps.
Mos Def is quite a good actor. That monologue about his Dad was well done.
Yeah, I've been really impressed with Mos Def so far. His and Dexter's rapport has been great. I wasn't too crazy about the character at first, and I was actually anticipating him being killed off soon, but I like that Dexter is giving him a second chance if he truly has changed and opening up his mind a bit more, while Sam isn't coming off as TOO preachy.
Yeah Mos really grew on me last night, and I'm also liking the development of his and Dexter's relationship.
It's sort of reminding me of Dex/Miguel.
You reckon Mos will end up in Dex's slide box.....?

Ive just formed a hypothesis. So we have Harry as Dexters light, Rudy as a manifestation of the Dark Passenger.
I'm wondering, have we ever seen Gellar interact with anyone except Travis, or with any meaningful object? For instance him standing painting in this episode is not a meaningful interaction. Im really starting to think that Prof. Gellar is Travis' Dark Passenger. That he isn't real. Have we ever seen him do the killing? When they ran down that couple last week, Gellar forced Travis to step on the gas, but that again could just be all in Travis' mind. We often see Travis without Gellar, but I don't think we have ever seen Gellar without Travis. Last week when they were outside and Travis saw Gellars picture on the front page, he didn't seem concerned with anyone spotting him.
I really think Gellar is long dead, and that this is somehow Travis' warped way of coping with the fact he has to kill, blaming it on Gellar. We have never actually seen Gellar do anything with any of the victims have we?
Harry is not and has never been Dexter's "light".
That ghost angle is a beastly theory xl. I totally am on board with that. The only issue is when they kidnapped his lover. I suppose he could have blacked out, tied her up, went back to bed, and then rose to find her?
The only issue I see with that theory is the talking on the phone part from a few episodes ago. That's a stretch even for a crazy guy.

Yeah, that episode was NOT as good as i thought it'd be. It was very erratically written to the point of feeling like it should have been 2-3 episodes, but someone jammed them together instead.
Brian is a fair one though, as he's Dexter's brother. I'd have no problem with Dexter seeing a lot of Brian, it wouldn't seem like cheapening anything because it makes sense in the story. Dexter has every reason to be obsessed by Brian.

Showtime has officially announced that Dexter will be back for two more seasons. (Season 6 has been delivering 5.12 million viewers a week, a series high according to Showtime, so the pickup makes sense.) Seasons 7 and 8 will consist of 12 episodes each, with production beginning in L.A. in 2012.

I really thought it'd be over soon, so this is good news, I think. Im worried they cant keep up the brilliance much longer. Before this season I would have been happy for them to wrap it up, but with the way this season is going its obviously not able to end things properly, so one more would be ok. I guess I can deal with two
Normally I judge a shows success, on if it makes it 7 seasons, but thats for 22 episode/season typical TV shows. Not for the more modern style 12 episode, high budget, well written brilliant shows we have been getting the last decade.

I'm very mixed about this news.
I hope they go fucking crazy with the next two seasons and then call it a day. With the ratio of AMAZING to MEH being at an alarming 50:50 for the series as a whole at this point, I'm not exactly excited about two more seasons, sadly.

I've never really agreed with people wanting things to end in the past, but even I was conflicted when I read this news. I'm glad that this season won't be the last, but I wonder how two more will play out. Dexter always seemed like a show that would tell its story in a few short seasons, but that hasn't really happened and I'm not crazy about some of the meandering the story has done along the way. I guess I'm glad that I'll get to keep watching it for a while longer though.
Yeah Im usually the guy who would say, lets take something as far as we can, it may not be as good as it was, but I still love the characters etc and I want as much of them as I can get. but I feel so strongly about how great this show is, that I want it to end before it gets stale.
In a way, this is win win for me, either it ends well, or I get to see the show carry on and Im really not against either option.
I think what needs to happen is Deb needs to find out about Dexter. For real this time.

thirded. me and vice have been talking about this season quite often, and it's just been such a let down. the fact that the most interesting thing this season, to me, is deb and her storyline, is fucking sad. i always enjoyed deb, but this show is DEXTER not DEBRA. i've been loving brother sam, but we all have seen how that turns out. the villains for this season have been atrocious. maybe the whole religion taken too far/doomsday/rapture thing is just played out for me, but i can't stand any of the shit going on with them. colin hanks is generally awful every time he is on the screen and while edward james olmos is creepy as shit and doing well with what he's given, i just am not interested in his character at all, since i just feel it's beyond cliche and annoying.This
what's going on with dexter has been boring and dull and doesn't seem overly important, despite the fact that the idea of 'what are you leaving for your son' is a pretty monumental thought in life. they can really nail the 'dexter is really awkward and oblivious with typical human emotions' stuff, like the whole dancing scene at the reunion and the whole season with trinity, for example. but this season seems forced and they're not really giving him much room to really explore. it just feels like lazy writing. that final scene of the one episode, with brian coming back, had me so amazingly excited. they've built up, for so long, dexter always fighting giving in to his dark passenger and taking the way of harry, though there have been flashes over the seasons of the dark passenger winning out. having brian there to goad him and provide a counter to harry could've been phenomenal. but they use it as an odd plot device for one episode and seem to be done with it. that's annoying.
i saw the news about the show being renewed for two more seasons, and i gotta admit, i kind of groaned at the prospect of getting two more seasons like this instead of two more really great seasons. if they use this as an end date, and build up the conclusion of the story over the next two season, it could be really awesome. i'm just not overly optimistic, at the moment.
We should not know when this series is going to end. Now if there is a big threat next season, the excitement is slightly wasted as we know there's more to come. My friend came late to the show, and said it was a shame he knew about there beiung four seasons when Doakes (still miss him!) had Dexter figured out. It won't get that tense again if we know the length left.
I have been enjoying the series as a whole. Obviously season 4 is the best it's been, but Doakes was slick and so was the ITK and I've even enjoyed the 'quieter' seasons with Prado/Chase; I think if this season keeps going as it's going I'll be happy enough (shame Brian didn't last longer than one ep as darkness took over Dex) and Im liking the DDK; BUT with the added cliffhanger of Deb OR someone finding out about him to really kickstart the series finale. Could they do a two-season-arc to end the series? Deb needs to figure Dex out - wasted opp last year when she was on the fence about vigilantes. Dex could go on the run. But I think that I would very much like the series to end with either Deb interviewing Dexter, OR Deb being killed allowing Dex to go on to becomefully dark. The season ending with one of his excellent creepy voiceovers or a knowing look to the camera could finish our story, but allow him to continue. Jesus, sorry for the ramble.
I don't think it's been confirmed that Season 8 will even be the last. Maybe 7 and 8 will go back to Season 4 greatness and it will get renewed for Season 9, who knows?
If Season 8 does actually turn out to be the last season they will advertise it as such. This isn't a show that's going to end without hype behind it.

Commenting on a few things.
First the episode.
Second the overall attitude towards the series. Not really sure I agree. I mean its not like everyone is being overly negative towards what's been happening but it's also fair to say that I feel like this show is getting the Simpsons 300th season treatment as in 'omg its boring, why keep going' and I don't feel like this show is at that point yet.
Each season has its own identity for better or worse. I don't feel like the show has gotten to the point where its the same shit, different season.
Tied to point 2. I feel like with the renewal for two more seasons. It should end on an even 8 seasons. It would make sense.
My 3rd point is more so my only real gripe with the show. I realize Dexter is a smart guy and all that but sometimes when I watch the character. I feel like im watching James Bond at work and im not sure how I feel about that but I know its an observation.
He always seemingly gets wherever he needs to go with minimal trouble. Occasinally he gets caught in big poop but overall its like the guy has the answer to everything. Not so much in the kills but just the overall recon/preparation.
I am actually really enjoying this season. My only complaint would be the actor playing Travis, he's been cringe worthy at a few points. Even then, for the most part he's been pretty passable.
