There's been a pretty healthy infusion of youth at the quarterback position over the last few years in the league. And so I'm curious how everyone thinks these guys stack up.

Of all the QBs who will be 26 or younger to start the 2018 season, who would you want to run your offense?

    I'm thinking..

    1. Carson Wentz
    2. Jimmy Garoppolo
    3. Deshaun Watson
    4. Pat Mahomes
    5. Josh Rosen
    6. Jared Goff
    7. Mitchell Trubisky
    8. Sam Darnold
    9. Dak Prescott
    10. Baker Mayfield
    11. Josh Allen
    12. Teddy Bridgewater
    13. Marcus Mariota
    14. Jameis Winston
    15. Blake Bortles

Kam Chancellor announces retirement. Great safety, too bad about the neck injury.

I would put Drak Prescott up higher, and I hate the Cowboys with a passion. He is at least more trustworthy than Darnold is right now.

So seahawks lost Sherman, Chancellor, Bennett, Richardson, Cliff Avril, and Earl Thomas is holding out. That team is done, yeah? Especially considering how much better LAR was last year and the upgrades SF made...

This is clearly based in part on projection. I'd rate Rosen, Goff, and Darnold as better prospects versus what I think is the ceiling that Prescott's already hit.

In other words If you asked me to choose one to build my team around I'd bet on any of them surpassing where Prescott is at now or will be. Just imo of course.

I know Mariota had a poor 2017 but to put him behind Teddy Bridgewater and a bunch of guys who have never done anything in the NFL seems like a leap

you must be really down on Mariota

    also Dak definitely underrated here

As someone who watched every snap of Titans football last year let me tell you, he was forcing it. Trying to make a miracle happen on every pass because the offense was so completely shit.

    He will be back.

I wasn't too big on Mariota coming out of Oregon, not beyond some solid physical traits. I think his career will see some success, but it will see more struggle.

And Dak is a decent above average QB. I'd personally take a chance on a kid I see as a better prospect than to sit on decent above average. But that's me.

While you certainly know far more about QBs coming out of college than me, I can't help but think you would be a terrible GM if you would build your team around Teddy Bridgewater over Marcus Mariota in 2018.

That letter is great. And the idea of Hunter Thompson and Jim Irsay kicking it is fantastic. Two lit lunatics.

The Lesean McCoy thing has been quite the story today. Still more to come out about it all I'm sure.

An understatement at best. Whatever happened, it certainly seems like a vicious and gruesome story.

And if McCoy is involved, I guarantee the NFL cocks their end of this up.

So they're saying he didn't do it himself but sent someone to do the break in to retrieve some of his jewelry he's been trying to get back and that person was the one who beat the hell out of her? This is scandalous for sure.

“Furthermore, I have not had any direct contact with any of the people involved in months.” -Lesean McCoy

Interesting inclusion of the word "direct".

idk if he's behind this but if so, I suppose it'll be a question of how the cops can link him to it or if he covered his tracks enough and his accomplices don't snitch

Supplemental draft is under way with an unusual number of prospects that are worth keeping an eye on.

Sam Beal, CB - Western Michigan - already selected with a 3rd by the Giants

Adonis Alexander, DB - Virginia Tech

Brandon Bryant, DB - Mississippi State

Martayveus Carter, RB - Grand Valley State

Bright Ugwoegbu, LB - Oregon State

With the three DBs of particular interest for a team in need.

And things wrapped up now with Adonis Alexander taken by Washington with a 6th.

This leaves Brandon Bryant as a notable free agent.

how does it work exactly like why would you pass in the 1st and 2nd then select someone in the 3rd, it is just because of the contract you have to give them which differs by round?

Because whatever round you choose to select a player with here you forfeit that corresponding pick in the next year's draft.

So New York and Washington both have used their 3rd and 6th round picks respectively in the 2019 draft to select the dudes they did today.

    ESPN NFL Best Under-25 Lineup:

    (lineup in spoilers)

How loaded is RB? Conversely WR looking thin? Modern NFL, huh?

So much stands out to argue with here though. Just interesting to see the rooks sprinkled in here on projections. Kinda love that.

I don't think I could rationalize that especially given how good Zeke has been.

I kind of feel the same way about Derwin James getting a mention over someone like Malik Hooker who was well on his way to a pretty great season until he was hurt.

It's hard to grade rookies because you are basing it off of nothing. Barkley could very well flop. I doubt it, but it's possible because we have no idea how he will be as a pro because he hasn't played a single down yet.

2018 NFL QB Tiers: 50 execs rank the starting quarterbacks (insider article)

Jared Goff and Carson Wentz are up. Eli Manning and Derek Carr are down. Jimmy Garoppolo and Deshaun Watson are ripe for debate.

My fifth annual NFL QB Tier rankings are here for 2018, backed by a panel of 50 league insiders. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers still set the standard, of course. They were again the only unanimous Tier 1 choices after the 50 experts were finished placing each of the 32 projected starters into one of the five tiers. The higher the tier, the less help the quarterback needs to succeed.

The breakdown of voters this year: 10 general managers, five head coaches, 10 coordinators, 10 senior personnel executives, five QB coaches and 10 others with job titles ranging from assistant coach to salary-cap manager to analytics director.

We've got every team covered here, with candid insights from the 50 voters. The results provide a composite for how the league views its quarterbacks.

    We start at the top.

Note: Because the fourth tier is reserved not only for lesser veteran quarterbacks but also for those without enough playing time to evaluate, exciting young prospects can lag in the rankings. Patrick Mahomes (one career start) is one example this year. Many voters who placed him in the fourth tier think he'll be better, but they reserved judgment in the absence of sufficient evidence.
    TIER 1
A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations.

    Rodgers 1.00
    Brady 1.00
    Brees 1.12
    Roethlisberger 1.40

    TIER 2
A Tier 2 quarterback can carry his team sometimes, but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.

    Matt Ryan 1.62
    Russell Wilson 1.72
    Stafford 1.74
    Rivers 1.80
    Wentz 1.84
    Luck 1.94
    Newton 2.30
    Carr 2.42
    Garoppolo 2.58
    Watson 2.60

    TIER 3
A Tier 3 quarterback is a legitimate starter, but needs a heavier running game and/or defense to win. A lower-volume passing offense makes his job easier.

    Cousins 2.52
    Alex Smith 2.52
    Eli Manning 2.78
    Prescott 2.78
    Goff 2.80
    Winston 2.86
    Mariota 2.94
    Dalton 2.96
    Flacco 3.06
    Keenum 3.06
    Tyrod Taylor 3.20
    Bortles 3.30
    Tannenhill 3.36
    Sam Bradford 3.38

    TIER 4
A Tier 4 quarterback could be an unproven player with some upside, or a veteran who is ultimately best suited as a backup.

    Trubisky 3.54

I'd only have Rodgers, Brady, and Brees as legit tier 1 guys With Ben, Wilson, and Wentz banging on that door after them.
    No way I'd have Newton as a tier 2, he's a career 3 by it's very definition.
Goff should cement himself as a legit tier 2 this season.
Watson and Jimmy G at the bottom of the 2s ahead of some established vets is interesting to say the least, but I don't really disagree.

yeah, big ben as a tier 1 at this stage of his career is baffling. you take bell and brown out of the lineup and i dont think he's making any miracles happen.

I think Stafford and Rivers are way overrated considering they haven't made the playoffs consistently in the last 5 years. Aren't they supposed to be carrying their teams sometimes? Finishing 8-8 or 9-7 screams bottom tier 2 for me.

Eli Manning is the definition of a tier 3 qb at this stage in his career.

Isn't he radically different on the road, as well? Not in the good way.

Bell: It can suck to be a RB.

Bell should be at least relatively stoked. Gurley's deal resets the RB market. Had the deal not happened, he'd be looking at Freeman's deal as the benchmark (5 years 41mil).

I think we all knew bell would be getting more than Freeman if he became a free agent though. That's obvious. It's just a matter if he will get the same as Gurley or what he wants which is like 17 mill a year.

Obviously. But would you rather your agent have an 8m/yr salary as the reference point for highest paid in the league? Or Gurley's extension of 15m/yr as a reference point?

Well considering his franchise number is 14 million and his contact offer was 14 million a year, it didn't matter what Gurley or Freeman got. The benchmark was set with his franchise number and contract offer that he turned down. Freeman's contact was moot. You could argue that Bell's contact offer helped the Rams with the contact they gave Gurley.

I would expect Bell to get around the same or slightly less than Gurley assuming he has a healthy and productive 2018. On the one hand he should be an unrestricted free agent which would open up his market to multiple bidders but on the other hand he will be 27 next offseason and Gurley is only about to turn 24.

So T.O. finally admitted he isn't going to Canton because he had to wait 3 years. I get that he has the stats of some of the top WR's of all time, but this seems really silly. So many receivers had to wait, with Moss being one of the only receivers to go in on the first try. He says he's not happy with the way the press treated him during his career. If he wasn't happy with the coverage, why is he surprised that the hall of fame, which is voted on by the same media, waited to let him in?

The whole thing seems really petty.

i dont think he was surprised.

i think it was insanely petty that it took three years for him to get in. randy moss was just as much of a headache during his career, but in the years since retiring he started broadcasting and 'reformed' his reputation, and surprise, surprise, first ballot. lawrence taylor was a drug addict and showed up to practices in handcuffs from the prostitutes he bought the night before and he was first ballot. ray lewis, first ballot. but owens clashed with the media and never backed down. he had his issues in locker rooms and with team management, but the numbers speak for themselves.

It really didn't get called until the end of the game and the ref were probably told to make a couple of them during the game and realize they didn't get a chance to. I think they are just going to make some of these calls during preseason like they do with every new rule. There will always be questionable calls but not as bad as people are making it out to be.

I tend to agree with PP that this is only the first preseason game and so way too soon to sound the chicken little alarms.

That said, this is the big one everyone is worked up about..

..and it will be a legit bummer if that remains a penalty during the regular season.

I wouldn't say it's pointless. However it certainly should be trimmed down to 2-3 games but then it's lost money for the owners.

Preseason helps with players on the roster bubble. I doubt they think it's pointless.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind it as it means football is back but yes maybe not to the non starter players. Shouldn’t be 4 games, should be two. One home and one away, pretty sure owners make enough in the regular season.

I will clarify that it's not that I never watch preseason. I would just never watch a preseason game not involving my team and even then it's only something I'll turn on if I happen to be home, and it's the 2nd or 3rd preseason game where the starters are playing. I just don't care to watch the backups, many of whom won't make the team, play an exhibition. It's boring. I do understand its importance and read reports on my team afterwards, like after Pats preseason game 1 I'll be all over the articles from the beat writers about whose stock is rising or falling, but I don't need to watch it live.

There are exceptions though. My team doesn't get any exciting draft picks but if my team drafted a Saquon Barkley or Baker Mayfield then sure I would tune into the preseason. That's exciting. When Jimmy G was getting ready to start for the Pats due to Brady's suspension, I was interested in seeing him in the preseason. My team just happens never get high draft picks and we haven't had a QB battle in 18 years.

Random discussion question here (I don't think I've asked it before or at least not lately) but who do you guys think will end up as the all time touchdown pass leader? Currently the leaderboard is:

    1 Peyton Manning 539
    2 Brett Favre 508
    3 Tom Brady 488
    3 Drew Brees 488

Brady and Brees are both 51 shy of Manning. I will admit that this could be Brady's last year. An injury, or a super bowl win, or his wife finally getting him to retire... I expect him to play in 2019 but it's possible he doesn't reach Manning. Brees is a year younger. Brees only had 23 TDs last year since the Saints run game exploded but I would expect him to approach 30 again this year if healthy.

So yea, idk when father time will catch up to either of these guys or who will retire first but I think it'll be an interesting chase for one of the biggest stats in the sport. I say Brady will end up the all time leader, Giselle be damned.

I think camp battles are pretty fun to watch unfold in the preseason. Usually at least a position group or two per team where the starter or a significant contributing role are up for grabs.

Well it all depends if they decide to play after this year which I think they both will. I say they both pass Peyton. I am under the assumption that neither of these teams win the super bowl this year since the eagles will

If preseason was truly about money, they'd shorten the preseason while simultaneously extending the reg season.

I would imagine it's only a matter of time till we have an 18-game season with two byes per team (with more international games), and only 2 preseason games per team.

If Brady and Brees play beyond this year, I think there is a good chance they could each pass Manning. But I think once those 2 retire, the number should stick for a while.

Rodgers not starting his first 3 years and losing two half-seasons to injury will be too significant of an obstacle to overcome in terms of catching up on some of the career #'s of Manning/Brady/Brees.

Beyond that, I don't see anyone who is threatening those #'s anytime soon. Too early to put that expectation on someone like Wentz imo. Luck already turns 29 this season so it'd be tough for him to catch up, but not impossible. Maybe Russell Wilson, but if he loses his mobility into his 30s, I have to imagine his production would suffer at least a little bit.

yea I don't see rodgers getting there. he is currently 226 behind the record which means he needs 7 more seasons of 32 TDs to reach it. if he stays healthy the rest of career that's possible but he hasn't been the most durable QB to this point. 7 more seasons would bring him to age 41.

russell wilson, no chance IMO based on his play style like you said.

I think whoever is leading between Brees/Brady/Manning when it's done will hold the title for at least 15 years.

Perc I do agree it's a record bound to be broken eventually because we are in the passing era (Brady/Manning/Brees started their careers before numbers got so inflated), because violent hits are still being further removed from the game and also there is the potential for a longer schedule (although I hope it doesn't happen). but I think it will stand for a while, with a chance of even lasting another 20-30 years.

I’m watching all or nothing on amazon from last season, and it is the first time I’ve ever heard Jason Garrett talk.

With QBs (and runners/receivers?) now considered to be giving themselves up with a head first dive instead of just a feet first slide, it does really feel like this will be the season of rule changes that are going to make people mad all the time. The key question on this one will be where do the refs place the ball? If you place it where the runner starts the dive then it'll be tricky when it comes to 1st down line/goal line dives. If you place it where they hit the ground then how do you not allow a defender to tackle them before they hit the ground and thus prevent them from gaining an extra yard?

    Love me some Hard Knocks.

And enjoyed Baker Mayfield squirming having to tell his contract amount in front of his whole team.

And really looking forward to watching Corey Coleman's reaction to being traded.

The scene that stuck with me the most was when Hue Jackson was telling the other coaches that his mom died earlier that day and his brother died a couple weeks before that. they didn't even seem to care that much. 10 seconds later, Hue Jackson is going over zone reads. it was really fascinating to watch that.

It's such a formulaic premise and approach they can take but they're always so damn good. Jarvis' speech was really good.

I've never been a big Cam guy but I like him in that video, and I like Greg Olsen coming to his defense and saying how Cam is the best thing that happened to his career.

Agree with almost all of that.

Cam never doesn't come across as a detestable twat imo, but no problem with him pretty peacefully calling a dude out face to face for talking a load of mess to the media.

Olsen simply leaving Chicago was probably the best thing for Olsen's career. But I get that that's his quarterback and all that.

The Patriots release Kenny Britt and the Dez Bryant speculation is rampant on Pats twitter. There is no report about the team being interested in him mind you but fans and media alike are saying they should sign him. At this point he has to be really cheap right? I would be happy to see that happen. SIGN DEZ.

Everyone in Minnesota is excited to sign George Iloka. I really do not know much about him but wonder what the fuss is.

He doesn't strike me as a guy that really provides a high amount of value, even if they're depleted. He strikes me as just a body to have on the roster. He can't gain separation and he doesn't seem very fond of working the middle of the field. That said, they really wouldn't need him in that regard. Who knows if he's actually in shape to perform at a fast tempo, which the Patriots would want to operate under. It seems telling he's still unsigned, and it would take an absolute perfect storm for him to work out in New England.

Giants still rule New York, go away Jets. Watched the pre season game last night. Giants O-Line looked ok but will need get better for that run game coach talked about after the game. Struggling a lot at the Red Zone so needs improving there but with OBJ back can’t see Giants having another season like last year.

5 years 95 million for OBJ. They must be hoping to draft high and get a qb in the next draft to balance the salaries.

they certainly don't think they will be drafting high next year. That is why they went with Barkley this year. They think they are close to a super bowl contender. If they finish the next two years at 8-8 or 9-7 they are kind of screwed because they will be drafting in the middle and have to give up lots of picks to move up.

They should trade a 4th to NYJ for Bridgewater.
