I thought that the final scene was perfect, really tense and unexpected, but very fitting.

The Sopranos prequel movie is on its way to production. Michael Gandolfini has just been cast as young Tony. That's right, they got James Gandolfini's son to play his younger self. Apparently he was on The Deuce and won the part not just because he's the son but also he's a good actor. We'll see. (Anyone watch The Deuce?). Vera Farmiga is the only big name attached that I'm seeing.

The film is titled "The Many Saints of Newark" and is expected to have Dickie Moltisanti as the lead character. Takes place in 1967 during the Newark riots.

    Consider me very IN.

People are speculating that Vera Farmiga would make for a good young Livia Soprano but that's unconfirmed. I hope Livia is a major character. I find her to be one of the more underappreciated tv villains. She was arguably the most villainous character on the show.

I go back and forth but I'd say Livia Soprano is probably my favourite character on the whole show. She's such a highlight of those first two seasons. So many quotable lines. The scene at her wake when Carmella speaks up after Christopher's dreadful little eulogy and then her father just lets loose with what he really thinks of her and no one can really argue is one my favourite scenes.

Funny how David Chase wrote her based on his own mother. Poor guy!

Also too bad the actress passed away before they could continue their planned storylines with her, but the show handled her death well.

It handled it well but it really sucked because you could feel the tension building between Tony and his mother and you just knew the story was going to start really going somewhere but then it just had to end.

Plus that oddly edited, CGI scene they had to do after she died to make that one episode make sense. Holy shit it was awkward. Starting at around the 1:00 minute mark here it just makes me laugh my ass off.

i love the wire but very, very strongly disagree. wire might be my #2 but sopranos is leagues better in literally every way.

the wire is excellently written, has tons of memorable moments, a great story arc, great characters; but the sopranos has moments that are legitimately artistically sublime, which i don't think i'd say about any other TV show. the entire season 2 finale, tony's dream sequence while he's in the coma, the ending scene of the episode where they go to italy while they're driving back from the airport, tony's reaction to christopher's death, etc. the wire has nothing like these moments; maybe season 2 of the wire at its best comes close. and not only this but the sopranos is a much funnier show, and in the dialogue writing, which is the wire's strongest suit, sopranos outclasses it. even in terms of american social commentary, which is another wire strong suit, sopranos is superior and much less 'on the nose'.

the wire has moments that are more exciting in terms of action and plot twists than anything in the sopranos, i will give it that.

the scene in tony's coma dream right before he wakes up is the best thing ever in a television series and artistically compares with the very best of cinema

We are actually in the middle of a rewatch as well. Early season 2 and the show has held up brilliantly. I have never rewatched this and seeing it again has been quite special.

    I completely agree.

The very thought of ever rewatching the Wire sounds incredibly daunting. Maybe I will give it a go after Sopranos is run through.

In thinking back, there were maybe 1 or 2 story lines on The Sopranos that I thought were pretty weak. Very few or no completely bad episodes.

There were full seasons of The Wire that were simply too tough to get through, including the 5th.

I have decided to watch The Wire again as soon as this rewatch of Sopranos is complete. I will report my findings in probably about a year.

the meadow boyfriend stuff was probably the weakest stuff. at least the noah stuff provided amusing tony scenes. there wasn't much redeeming value in the finn stuff except as one part of the vito plot. i actually think the AJ stuff is all pretty good.

i said 'stuff' way too much in that post

they're both amazingly ripe for rewatch.

which is better? normally my answer is whichever one I've rewatched more recently.

Wife and I have done a series rewatch. We are in season six and Vito just packed his bag and hit the road now that he has been essentially exposed. It's really, really good.

Honestly rewatching it for the first time this summer has made me feel like Game of Thrones isn't even close in the discussion for GOAT show.

It's really shocking that being gay was handled this way on top tier TV less than 15 years ago.

I don’t think it ever was. Game of Thrones for sheer cinematic size and spectacle is unparalleled and has legitimately changed what television is capable of. But I don’t think it was ever in the conversation for genuine BEST show, biggest yet, but not best.

It's all about the whole package. The first three seasons of GoT showed the potential to be on someone's "greatest" list. But then it slowly fell apart the last half of its run.

Sopranos starts off strong and then never falters. It's just fucking excellent from the first episode to the last. If anything it just gets better and better as it goes along.

Yea in my opinion the first 4 seasons of GOT put it squarely on track to be in the GOAT conversation. and then it declined.

Why would you waste your time with a fan podcast when there is one hosted by two of the show’s co-stars?

Idk if "Talking Sopranos" is really worth while tbh. I've only watched one episode and then a few of their interviews here and there and it doesn't strike me as particularly good podcasting. They're not the most charismatic duo. So I suggest skip the podcast and just enjoy your re-watch. I watch this show every few years and it still holds up wonderfully.

But hey if people like that podcast, go for it. I like R_P's idea to find a fan one because frankly none of the actors on the show are interesting enough to keep me tuned in (I think Adrianna has one too, and then Meadow and Anthony Jr have one where they just talk about random shit). Some superfans/experts discussing it might be better (not that I know of any).

    This take is just wrong.

Two of the show’s co-stars, offering rare and unknown behind-the-scenes information, while interviewing every single cast member outside of Gandolfini/Sirico. If you’re a Sopranos fan, how is that not must-listen entertainment? My only (minor) beef is that the layman Schirripa tends to dominate the conversation when I’d rather hear more from the artistically inclined and very thoughtful Imperioli.

Give ‘yer balls a tug, Fro.

BTW, a Pats fan bagging on somebody for being uncharismatic is pretty fucking laughable...

    Holy fuck, that looks amazing.

A HBO prequel series with Michael playing a young Tony as he rises through the Jersey mob family? I’d watch the shit out of that.

    It's a film, not a series.

    I realize that.

I should have clarified, evidently. If they were to transition from that movie to a HBO prequel series, I would not complain.

Pretty cool trailer. Kind of caught me off guard because the things I had read about it made it seemed like Tony was going to be a featured character but not the star of the movie. This looks like a movie that's focused directly on Tony.

I'm excited for it but one movie isn't gonna be enough to even wet my whistle. It's going to be like 2 and 1/3rd episodes of the series.

Yeah from what I recall they previously said Dickie would be the lead character. This makes it seem like Tony and Dickie share the lead, but it could just be the way they edited the trailer. Michael Gandolfini is the 5th actor listed in the credits, for whatever that's worth.

given how long it's been since the series ended, it probably makes sense to entice people back in with the character they all knew and followed. i loved the show, but it's been years since i watched it and my memory of all the previous generation of newark gangsters could barely be considered hazy.

Michael, in that trailer, moves and has the same mannerisms as his old man. Yes, a large part is most definitely genetic, but the young man definitely did his homework. The head turn and the glare when he’s being shittalked in the phone booth, the smirk when he takes the speakers…serious chills, man.

Takes some serious grapefruits: stepping into the very same role that your dad made so iconic.

Jimmy narrating at the beginning and “The Sopranos” theme music at the end…hot damn…

Eh...I haven't been excited for any movie in recent memory. I feel like movies (mainstream at least) have taken a sizable nosedive over the last decade for various reasons.

That said, I was excited for this one knowing Chase was still involved with the project. However a good passion project this was not. It was a lazy, incoherent mess that just had scene after scene strung together with basically no payoff or point. It would've been perhaps better suited for a 10 part mini series that could've perhaps fleshed things out. As is though, it feels like it was either a big con job or Chase and HBO were at odds about what they wanted it to be. I heard originally Chase just wanted to do a movie about the Newark riots, but HBO insisted on adding the Sopranos element. If it wasn't a pure con job and instead a clash of egos over one of the greatest shows of all time, then that's a shame and it clearly showed Chase was done with the Sopranos back in 2007 and he merely came back for a cash injection and some depiction of the Newark riots.

At the end of the day, the film can't stand on its own two feet IMO and I know fan service is a divisive part of every person's opinion on things like this, but for me the fan service was kinda the only stuff memorable about the film, even if some of it was forced. Definitely not a film I could see myself watching again by comparison to the ultra rewatchable show.

I disagree @ReDPath. I liked Many Saints of Newark and think the negative or mediocre reactions to it have been overblown. Perhaps I benefitted from watching it with lowered expectations since I had already seen the luke warm reception for it.

I think it's a pretty solid movie. Alessandro Nivola is very good as Dickie. I don't remember him from anything else but he gave strong Christian Bale vibes in this. Does the movie stand on its own? Almost. I think the dialogue writing, acting, directing, and how they centered it on the Newark Race Riots all worked very well. It feels very similar to a movie like A Bronx Tale, only darker and more violent a la the Sopranos. Story-wise is where it's arguably lacking, in that there isn't really a main conflict and climax. But the stories of the black character Harold, and Dickie's love story with his gumar, and Tony's development, these all work pretty well. And of course they worked in the Sopranos-style therapy via Dickie seeking counsel from his uncle and Livia in her scene with the guidance counselor. These were good scenes.

The fan service was very well done I thought, in the way they portrayed all of the characters we knew from the show. I especially liked how they had Christopher as the narrator. I was surprised we didn't see Johnny suffer a panic attack, but of course that's something Tony didn't know about until he was an adult.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised by how solid this was. I think it was similar in quality to El Camino, the Breaking Bad movie, but the difference is that Camino almost completely continued the style of the show. Many Saints felt very different from the Sopranos tonally - it felt like a real movie you would watch in the cinema. And that's a good thing IMO... I can see why David Chase felt this was worthwhile to make, as opposed to just a double-length flashback episode of the Sopranos.

I really enjoyed “Many Saints”, surprisingly managed to avoid spoilers. I had fun trying to piece together how this story fit into the information that David Chase gave us in the TV show, will have to rewatch the movie. Next step is to listen to episode 80 of “Talking Sopranos”, which is a special episode centered around the movie.

I left the theatre feeling like I needed a sequel to the prequel movie…or better yet a HBO prequel series.

I don't know why they just dont do a sequel series. Life in the Soprano family after Tony is dead. I'd be so down.

As long as Chase is running the show I feel it would be fine.

I never enjoy prequel shows the way they want me to.

But hey. Soprano Babies. Make our dreams come true.

honestly it's close to a miracle how good the original series is. no way could anything produced now even hold a candle to it.

I’m fully aware of and accept that probability.

We witnessed young Anthony and mob boss Tony, I need to know how we got from A to B.

I just started rewatching it today. I forgot about Tony loving the ducks. I'm sure there's a lot I forgot. It was like 10 years ago when I watched it.

Is this your second time through the series, aka your first rewatch? I’ll probably do run #3 of “The Sopranos” in the near future.

I did “The Wire” a second time pre-COVID, actually appreciated it even more than I did during the first go-round.

I've done Sopranos through 3 times. Never done that with any show and I'll do a 4th eventually.

I agree, but this is a 60 second ad designed to get you in the feels. Anyway it was a great super bowl ad. I love those two. Well I love the actors... AJ was a cunt and Meadow was a huge brat until the last couple seasons.

Meadow was written as the worst person on earth for the first 4/5 of that show.

AJ was just a short bus kid. Not really his fault.

You can make that argument and it may even be true but I just feel like Meadow was intentionally shitty as a human while AJ was so fucking stupid it was borderline unbelievable so his character just had more excuses.

But let's say the whole show was real and things kept going after Tony got wacked in the Diner.

AJ wouldn't have lived another 2 years I bet. Probably be dead in 1. Either from a botched revenge mission to avenge Tony or just from drinking Windex because he thought it was blueberry flavored.
