I remember hating Inglourious Basterds, haven’t watched it since the cinema and can’t really remember why I hated it.

I really wish Adam Sandler would have played The Bear Jew as he was supposed to. Eli Roth was fine but I think Sandler would have put that character over the top. Sandler couldn't do it because it conflicted with him starring in Funny People.

I think just the idea of Sandler being in a Tarantino movie in this kind of role would have added about 40+ million to the box office.

Schindler's List is a war movie? I thought it was a wartime movie. Would Judgment at Nuremberg be a war movie then?

If I was putting together 5 films to tell the story of WW2 Schindler’s List would be one of them, so it definitely counts.

A movie doesn't need to have people fighting in a war to be a war movie.

Did anyone nominate "Casablanca"? That's one of the greatest World War 2 movies ever made.

Stunning film. My dad let me watch it when I was about 10 years old and it's still one of my favorite war movies. #2 on my list.

A great movie. We watched this in school as well. Matthew Broderick, shit up until this movie I only knew him as Ferris Bueller. Denzel killed it. IMO, the best Civil War movie of all time.

Only seen this once but what a film. Christopher Walken manages to overshadow Streep and De Niro, no mean feat.

It's been a while since I watched this but I remember buying this used on VHS when I was a teen. it's such a long movie that it came on two VHS tapes. It was good from what I recall, albeit very long. I wouldn't mind circling back to it again one day and watching it in a few sittings.

Saw the training part once and always wanted to watch it, but never have.

We're down to number 5 and I still haven't seen a film on this list.

Another great one. Admittedly I had it around #10 but I think that was more because it's been a minute since I've seen it.

The reacharound quote by Ermey was absolute perfection.

Incredible movie. I've seen it so many times it's not even funny. My uncle, who we called "Sarge" could quote this and Platoon front to back. I remember as a kid being horrified during the scene

I haven't seen a lot of the movies on this list, I think mostly because US-focused war movies don't really capture my interest. I put a couple of Australian made movies on my list that others obviously haven't seen (or enjoyed). I imagine that kind of view is pretty common with people preferring movies that focus on their own cultural background (for lack of a better term)

I generally dislike Tarantino movies but thought IG was ok.

Don't see why someone can't greatly enjoy a war film focused on another region/culture than their own. 7 of the 20 I sent in were non US-centric. I think though it's more a matter of exposure. Everyone here has been recommended by advert or word of mouth films like Full Metal Jacket or Born on the Fourth of July or Saving Private Ryan or Platoon, etc.. But films like '71 or Beasts of No Nation or Son of Saul, etc are simply less likely to break through the same awareness/anticipation.

I've never been to space, but my favorite war movie is "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back".

I've never lived underwater, but the Atlantean war in "Aquaman" was really cool.

I fucking love Platoon. This and Full Metal Jacket hold a special place in my heart due to my uncle who practically raised me and the million times we'd watch these 2 movies when I'd come over (which was almost every day in my youth). The cast is on point, so many big names and some that went on to become big names. I always forget Johnny Depp is in this movie. John McGinley is so good in this and people forget sometimes that this guy is a really really good actor with a wide range.

But Willem DaFoe and Tom Berenger are money. Wow. Just can't say enough good things about the last 2 movies on this last.

    I'm not saying they can't. I'm saying they don't.

The vast majority of the audience at release times of most of these movies were people who lived through the era. You really think they'd seek out movies that tell of life from the other side?

Like how most Americans won't bother to see a movie about the terrorists our military are fighting in the Middle East?

Give it time and a movie that shows the life and times of a suicide bomber, compelled to action by their religion and loyalty to their people and country, but fighting against it because of their life and the beginning of some forward thinking progress - is going to be an Oscar Award winner one day.

But its too soon for that shit now. Especially in a Donald Trump America.

What a great film. Captures the insanity of the Vietnam war perfectly. The fact that Brando turned up and binned his script and said whatever he wanted is also legendary.

I still have not seen Apocalypse Now but it's on the bucket list.

Schindler's List came out when I was in middle school and we have a strong Jewish community here in Des Moines so they actually let students get together with survivors of the Holocaust that lived here and watch this. Then we had a survivor come and speak to the entire school about what they witnessed and went through and how the movie held up to what they experienced. It was wild!

Something similar happened here in CT as well. We saw the movie when it came out on video and then had survivors come and explain what they saw and what they lived through. One of them even had her tattoo touched up every few years so it looked almost brand new. She said she didn't want anybody to ever forget what happened.

They're going to remake Full Metal Jacket and have it seen through the eyes of that 13 year old sniper who picked off half the cast in 5 minutes.

yea i dont think many of these war movies have a lot of replay value. except Inglourious Basterds which I've seen about 5 times. I love the Fassbender/Mike Myers/Winston Churchill scene in that.

Easily one of the best war movies of all time and I'd agree that it's one of the best movies of all time in general. So many good scenes and pretty fucking believable when watching. Tom Hanks might be the greatest actor of all time because of this movie and Forrest Gump. Well, not JUST those movies but they were movies that cemented the status as one of it not the GOAT.

    I've seen one.

Loved it. Loved the entire cast, actually, but special praise for Hanks. The scene on the shore was haunting to me when I first saw it as a 15 year-old.

The only thing wrong with Saving Private Ryan is the annoyingly misleading stuff at the start at the war graves, it’s like a deleted scene they forgot to delete. It would have been much better to go straight to Tom Hanks in the landing boat.

I was 15 when this movie came out and my dad took me to see it in the theater. We had just found out that my grandfather had been at Normandy. My dad asked him if he wanted to go see it and his response was "once was enough for me."

Awesome, awesome film. Every time it's on I get sucked into it. It's in my top three movies all time and might possibly be #1 for me. Still gets me at the end when they're at Arlington. I can't say enough good things about Saving Private Ryan.

Spielberg is a monster at making films.

ET, Saving Private Ryan, Jurrasic Park, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Close Encounters, War of Worlds, Catch me if you Can, etc.

Just a hell of a resume!

"War" seems to be a fairly ambiguous tag to give a movie. Counted about 10 in that list that I would not consider to be a war movie by any stretch.

The fact Hacksaw Ridge didn’t make the Top 25 tells me you all have shit taste in war movies. :-)

Thought Hacksaw Ridge was wildly overrated.

Think if Beasts of No Nation and '71 had some more exposure they'd have landed much higher.

Also thought Zero Dark Thirty and Fury could have made the final cut.. so close.

Good to see the Pianist on the full list. Would've been top 3 for me. One of the best movies I've seen in general, maybe Adrien Brody in his best role.

What is this movie "Come and See" ? It barely missed the top 25 coming in at #26 so I have to imagine this was on quite a few people's lists.

I'm curious because it's one of the only non-Western made movies on the list and I've heard of damn near every movie that was voted for except this one.

How is it not? It's centered around World War 2, Hitler, soldiers, the whole reason for the creation of Cap is to win the war..........If it's due to the bending of reality with him being the ultimate super soldier, sure. But there are a lot of war movies, pretty much all of them, that bend the truth and have unrealistic or fictional situations that they put in.

It may take place during WW2 but is it really a war movie? It's more of an action film, super hero film. Think it's a bit like Forrest Gump, it has elements of war in it but it's not really a war movie. Though I was told it wasn't people seemed to still vote for it.

Only a small % of Gump took place during Vietnam though. 99% of Captain America takes place inside World War 2. It's not a periodical piece where it just so happens that WW2 is going on at the same time, the character itself was literally created to help America and their allies defeat the Axis Powers, specifically the Nazis.

For example, I wouldn't call A League of Their Own a WW2 movie. It takes place during World War 2, the concept is based around the men getting drafted and the women having to fill the void. But it's ultimately a baseball movie.

If Captain America was just about a guy who was given super powers and he's fighting crime in Brooklyn while his buddy is off fighting Nazi's, I could see the argument. But yeah man, the only thing I can see it being out of the conversation is that it's fantasy, to an extent. So it definitely walks line, but shit look @ 300. It was super high on the list lol. The only realism to that movie was there were 300 spartans, Xerces, and Leonidis. Outside of that, everything else was comic book related.

It's not a traditional jingle bells Santa Clause coming to town heartwarming Christmas movie but it checks enough boxes to find itself in that category.

I mean, we're not trying to put Star Wars on the list even though several boxes are checked that would allow those movies a spot. Capt America 1, the only reason it's not going to find itself on the "War" shelf at Best Buy is because of the fantasy element.

Somehow I don't have my list of war movies but I know I sent one in. Being a bit longer in the tooth than many of y'all, it wouldn't surprise me if several of you hadn't ever seen some of my choices. But they're worth seeing.

"Come and See" was my number 1 so I think it was only me and Jimmy Zero who had it on our lists. It's a Soviet war film that was censored by the authorities for years before finally being allowed a release. It's an exceptional, haunting film and I fully recommend it if you're feeling up to something that will probably leave you feeling quite devastated, even angry.
