    Westworld

It's HBO's new science fiction series from Jonathan Nolan and J. J. Abrams. The series is based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film of the same name.

This looks right up my alley.

I like the idea of it being a TV show rather than yet another film remake.

I will add my hat in for this. Looks great and should help ease the emptiness of summer tv breaks. The cast is actually stocked out the wazoo so that ups the ante.

The first episode had 3.3 million viewers across its first two airings and streaming. That's HBO's biggest premiere since True Detective debuted three years ago.

is he a guest who's just decided to game the shit out of the park for thrills ...
is he a rogue host who's outwitted his programming and is looking for the source (Star Trek TNG's Moriarty?) ...
is he some kind of competitor to the Westworld Company ...

    Check this out: https://www.discoverwestworld.com/#

You get this response if you ask about the Man in Black:

    AEDEN:

I’m sorry, per the Westworld confidentiality policy, we cannot disclose personal information about any of our guests.

    AEDEN:

Just between you and me, though, the Man in Black is something of a VIP. What else would you like to know about the park?
I'm sure there's more to him than just being rich sadist.

Cracking first episode. I think the guy that played Dolores' father was the MVP of the episode. That last scene with him sitting reciting Shakespeare was fantastic.

My prediction is that everyone is a host apart from Anthony Hopkins. Until we see the "humans" outside of the park/facility I will continue to think this.

Anyone think this might be a sequel to the film rather than a clear reboot? There was mention that there was an "event" 30 years ago.

    So for ep 2 ...

Anthony Hopkins as the omnipresent puppet master on one side and Ed Harris as the terminator-esque Man in Black on the other is captivating.

Can't get enough of seeing the hosts 'come alive' moment by memory by line by linger by revision by reverie. Brilliant.

Maeve witnessing the guts to the greater machine was devilish and thrilling.

A guest with a (for now anyway) moral compass lacking the impulse of others is so welcome.

And that gun looks bad for anyone who may come across sweet, sweet Dolores.

    I quite like this show.

I'm pretty sure the Man in Black is an evil human being, but I'm not a 100% yet. It wouldn't surprise if they end up flipping the script with that character. Regardless, Ed Harris is knocking this role out of the park.

The William character does seem to be the human hero so far. He seems genuine.

I don't see him being a rogue host. He has VIP status. I just wonder if he's an out-and-out villain or an antihero who's manipulating the system. The show cuts away from some of his acts of villainy, and that makes me question what his role is.

Don't think he's a rogue host anymore either. Like I said they've said as much.

But surely the employees have some idea what he's up to, ya? Just not sure how much big brother there is amongst the park.

When TMIB is with Lawrence and his wife/daughter it made me uncomfortable. Why did the daughter tho shake off her fear and talk about this "maze"? Wouldn't the programmers notice it?

Seems TMIB has figured out how to manipulate the programs after having been a guest for so long. Be fun to see just how that's explained.

Curious also how much the WW employees monitor what's going on ... is it like a security camera at a store that's not really watched round the clock but only reviewed in the event something's gone wrong? Perhaps in this case he's managed to stay under the radar, at least up until now that he's getting reckless as he feels he's getting close.

Another great episode. So many theories already.

I'm pretty certain the events of the 1973 film are part of the show's history. The fact an "incident" 30 years ago was mentioned in the first episode and Ed Harris saying he had been coming to the park for 30 years surely can't be a coincidence?

One theory I read is that he is a survivor of the 1973 film and his compensation was a lifetime pass to the park. That voice that was telling Dolores to "remember" could also be trying to get her to remember the events of the incident as it was stated she is one of the oldest hosts in the park.

I also reckon that Bernard may have lost his family and has been slowly trying to get to a stage where he can re-create them as hosts. I think Theresa might even be a robot version of his dead wife. She seemed to just give up the goods way to easy with Bernard.

William and Logan were an obvious nod to the main characters from the film. As was the snake, again a reoccurring motif. That old Chestnut.

Anthony Hopkins is already my favourite.

William is TMIB theory really intrigues me. People have noticed the WW Logo in Williams "Timeline" \W differs from the current "Timeline" \W/.

I've also seen a brief clip of a robotic looking hand exposed in the previews for the upcoming episodes....could it be TMIB hand? Considering he always has black gloves and when he shook Dolores's hand she looked at him in a odd way?

Watched the movie last night and it was more enjoyable then I expected. How cool would it be if TMIB wasn't William but Peter Martin's character from the movie?

I'm hooked on the show. I've been all over the WW reddit hearing peoples theories and observations. The show could go a multitude of ways and I'll be enjoying the ride.

William looks nothing like The Man in Black, so I have a hard time believing they're the same person.

That is a pretty cool theory.

But did I not see Dr Ford walking past William as he came up the escalator after he got off the first train?

Nope, I don't believe so. I've watched both episodes twice and don't recall Dr Ford passing Billy in any instance.

William = TMIB is the biggest theory going around currently. And there's a lot of foundation to the theory, Including the old vs new logo. Although there is a critic that has already viewed the first 4 episodes and he is saying that the theory isn't true......But who knows. Either way reading the theories and things that people pick up on is really interesting.

Can't wait to see how this all unfolds.

I've warmed to the William/TMIB theory. Not full on believing it to be the case, just boy it'd be a sight to see unfold, story-wise.

After watching the first two episodes, it kind of feels to me like TMIB knows what's going on with the "evolving" hosts. It almost seems like he's trying to hurry along the process by doing such horrible shit to as many of them as he can that there's no way they couldn't not "remember" it, despite being "rebooted," or whatever. Like, he's doing wildly vile traumatic things to them over and over and he's just imprinted himself onto the hosts and the park.

Also, is there any indication as to what the Maze is, besides something that TMIB is trying to get to?

I wonder if the maze isn't just a kind of return program for all the hosts. Something that if Westworld were to suffer a catastrophe of some kind the hosts could be signaled 'home' or perhaps a lost guest or employee too far out could use it as a way back. Something within their programming that could lead someone from outside Delos to it's inner workings. Hence the little girl telling TMIB that it isn't meant for him.

A programmed map leading into and through all of this ...

... and TMIB wants his way in for good because like he said, he doesn't plan on ever going back.

The beginning of the ep struck even more of a William/TMIB chord for me. The whole bit about how he felt the gunshot when he 'popped his cherry'. The contrast being how we've seen TMIB completely no sell getting shot multiple times point blank, as though he's been there so many times before and can't be bothered anymore.

I say that though without seeing next week's tease. Maybe something there to make that moot. And I also need to see the maze hint you mentioned.

I'm ruling nothing out. This show is all about technology and surprises and layers. For all we know Arnold is the MiB only he's had his face blown off and reconstructed. Or he's downloaded his consciousness into a robot. Or there never was an Arnold. Or everyone is a robot but Hopkins.

    Or Hopkins is a robot.

Or it's all a dream Bob Newhart is having.

    This show is the tits.

How could The Man in Black and William be the same person if they both exist in the same timeline. At least, I think that's what this episode seems to suggest.

Maybe. Dolores saw TMiB in a quick vision when Trevor from GTA V was about to rape and/or kill her in the barn. After that, we saw her stumble upon William and his friend sitting around a campfire. That leads me to believe that TMiB and William exist within the same timeline.

I took the line "why don't we reacquaint ourselves Dolores, start at the beginning..." from TMIB to be perhaps an indication that she then looped her memory into an older run-in with William which connected the next scene out at the campfire. Almost even looked like he was about to carve her open with the Bowie knife to maybe do some programming of his own. Maybe they're also purposefully overlapping memories to show just how imperfectly impactful they are on consciousness.

Or again, I probably like the theory a bit too much and I'm reaching as fuck to make it stick while this show is so fun to consider options.

Gonna go back and watch this ep again soon. Love this show.

This show didn't grab me at first but I rewatched the first episode and now I'm caught up. They're steadily building up the awakening of the hosts and the threat they could pose to the guests. I thought the Arnold backstory was interesting, particularly how Ford's new narrative seems to mirror the breakdown of their relationship. He talks about a time of war and how a former ally changed - quite early on, they seem to laying the groundwork for a good vs evil battle and it makes me question how the Man in Black fits into that. If Arnold achieved that final level of consciousness, or was some form of host himself, Ford seems a little too oblivious to the idea that this is all happening again.

Heard a theory today that TMIB is a non-host android that is inhabited with Arnold's consciousness. Wasn't sold at first but pressed the guy on his idea and he gave some depth to it toward much sturdier feel.

    Ideas afuckinbound with this show.

Another great episode, but I haven't come out of this one with as many theories as I had with the previous two episodes.

I definitely feel like all the main characters are going to be tied together by the events that happened 30 years ago.

Dolores isn't lying to Bernard but she is definitely avoiding telling him the truth. When he asks her not to tell anyone about their conversations, rather than confirming she say's something along the lines of "You told me not to".

It is only a matter of time before we see the first death of a guest at the park.

I really hope the show is gearing up to give Teddy one of the best revenge plots in TV history. Now that he has this back story for revenge, when the shit hits the fan he'll move his hatred and thirst for retribution for his 1000 deaths he has experienced, towards his creator rather than 'Wyatt'.

The voice of 'God' that Dolores is hearing is going to be Arnold then? I don't think I buy that Ed Harris is Arnold, but he definitely might have met Arnold who told him about the hidden level of the park. Maybe Ed Harris was a guest in the park when Arnold was killed. Heck, Arnold might have been Ed Harris' first victim of torture to find out more about the park.

Not the fastest moving episode this week, but some interesting info gained.

TMiB has an out of park backstory, and apparently he's a bit of saint. Hmm.
He also has a keen knowledge of Arnold and what he means for the park's history.
Logan's fam has a stake in Delos. Gotta be something brewing for later there.
I would spend every minute of my own personal Westworld adventure with Armistice.
Teddy as Westworld's Kenny is becoming greatly anticipated and I agree with Marlon above, the payoff should be glorious.
Ford playing god went to a new height as he flexed his enormous influence. How does he cue them all at once?
LOVED the telling of how Maeve is beginning to become aware of her 'life'. The Native's mythology/Westworld clean-up crew touch was terrific.
And seeing Dolores and Bernard play off one another is now a touchstone treat week in and week out.

Decided I don't care to watch the show anymore with one eye glued to what's going to be the ultimate outcome. It's tiresome and has really taken away from enjoying seeing these characters literally and figuratively come to life. So many questions about morality and dignity involved in a web of different personalities, too much fun to digest it all properly without guessing the final script.

Also the moments where they capture watching an AI 'life' within a human vacation within a tv show is grand.

Believe so. After TMiB asked Ford if he'd created a worthy adversary to prevent him finding the center of the maze.

Ford's not so subtle threat to "stay out of his way" was intense. Within the confines of the park he is a god. Any and everything is a slave to his command and so long as he's around that makes him the most dangerous person in Westworld.

I enjoyed how the evil gang leader explained the visions of the park workers in their outbreak suits as religious visions. Ford told us that Arnold used religious and spiritual ovetones in the bots programming to help them understand their own thoughts.

Like perc, I'm done trying to crack all the codes. I just enjoy ride.

So Ed Harris is gonna be some sort of saint in real life? Like he probably owns a robotics company that deals with amputees and has given lots of his money to charity.

I really don't know what to make of Dolores. Her and Maeve storylines are very similar at the moment, so I'm unsure why we have the two of them both slowly discovering that their world is not real. They both have Ed Harris in their flashbacks/memories, so it's quite possible they are both part of his plan. He also mentions Arnold this week, so it'll be interesting to see what his history with him is.

I wonder who the rep is that the Shareholders will be sending in to review the park. I'm guessing we've already been introduced them, potentially Logan?

I see the whole, request for explosives and being able to disable guns, excuse the pun, backfiring. You think with all the technology in the park, they would have a better/safer way of portraying violence.

    Also poor Teddy.

I've been watching this show, but not been 100% focused at all times so I may have missed the answer to this but....

How does the park function if all hosts aren't reset daily? Dolores has been with William for more than 24 hours. This would mean that anyone killed the previous day would theoretically be back in the park while she is still living her story line, would it not? Does anyone have an explanation around how hosts can re-enter the world without someone just going "Didn't you die yesterday?".

Hasn't really been touched on yet.

They tend to run stray hosts down that get out of their loop and need to be re-set. I imagine if a host has been gone for an extended period with a guest outside of their narrative, like in the way of Dolores/William, that the park crew would be aware and try and head them off to retrieve and re-set them before they re-enter. We've seen park staff intercept guests who were going a little overboard on the hosts and threatening to throw narratives out of whack, so perhaps they have a similar protocol.

Or it's something we'll see soon play out as an actual storyline influence.

I think they allow their hosts to go off for a while as long as they are with a guest. But in a couple of days I think they try to get them back to their regular narrative story.

I'm having a really tough time getting into this show. It's boring and plodding.

I don't know if this shit is for me.

I thoroughly disagree. Every episode has been captivating to me.

Then again, I couldn't make it past the first season of The Wire. Watching that show was like going to jury duty. I know the war on drugs is heinous; anyone with a working brain knows it's a disaster. ENTERTAIN ME.

Then what am I missing? You and I tend to have similar tastes in this kind of stuff.

This show feels like an M. Night Shyamalan movie. Cool concepts, tons of expository bullshit where nothing ever happens, and instead of actually building up any tension what little does actually happen happens at a mind bogglingly slow pace. How many times do I have to sit through a Delores/Bernard conversation before they become interesting?

I don't know what to tell you.

The show is slowly revealing its hand, and I don't have a problem with it taking its time. The story is still advancing from week to week. We're only five episodes into the first season, so I don't expect or need big payoffs this early. I'm satisfied with the smaller plot developments and the character interactions.

I'm thinking the same, I'm only 4 episodes in.

I haven't had this much fun thinking about a show since the first season of True Detective. I find the themes and ideas interesting. A.I. is fascinating to me. I also love westerns.

I'll grant you that it's a slow burn, but I think they do a great job of "keeping the balls in the air" from episode to episode. That's what long-form storytelling is about, I think. I like being kept in the dark when it comes to details in certain types of stories.

Watching seamless AI robots discover their own existential awareness is pretty much enough for me.

That we're watching these robots do this in a futuristic yet Old West theme part that's filled to the gills with them is even more hypnotic.

That it's all been crafted by an Anthony Hopkins performance while being oppositely exposed by an Ed Harris performance is icing on this cake.

Seeing the layers to their awareness ... reverie and bicameral minds, the staff's humdrum world functioning as the hosts actual mythology.

A robot accidentally seeing it's warehouse graveyard in processing. Robots' memory hinting to them the horror of their perpetual existences of mere hedonistic usage. An incredibly powerful man lost in his god complex. Even seeing how the staff ... uhh, "interact"... with robots that aren't suppose to be online.

No show/movie is going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I can't see not finding this all pretty fascinating. And from what I've read they're planning this thing seasons in advance, so the pacing is there for some seemingly hopeful long-term payoff. Maybe other 'worlds' at some point.

To each their own of course, but it's all been just wonderful for me so far.

    Seconded.

The "I need an immediate payoff" short attention span crowd is embarrassing... a huge reason why that idiot Trump is one week away from potentially winning the Oval Office...

I think when Ed Harris finds the next level/hidden layer to Westworld he will ultimately be unfulfilled as he will realise that there is an unreachable/unobtainable level that he will never get to.

So sounds like he bailed the park out at the moment of crisis and that allows him the special treatment whilst visiting the park?

I think the little boy we've seen in a couple of episodes now, will be some version of Arnold.

The only issue I feel this program has is that they are withholding a lot of information in order to be mysterious. It's like watching a game of chess, but we are only currently seeing 4 squares, where I want to see the whole board. I guess we're all a bit like Ed Harris in that way, wanting to get to the next level.

This show is the equivalent of asking someone what the time is and their answer is "At this time the time is not important. I will tell you the time in time... when it is imminently time."

Sorry I don't like your drawn out hackneyed titty programme. Didn't realise I was going to destroy the world.

You think this show is hackneyed? I suppose there's something to it being a reboot of sorts. But in this story we're seeing in particular?

I was being glib, but there's a lot of stories about the line between AI and life in recent times. I don't find this show's approach to that matter very interesting.

This show is based on a film from the 70's, so, yeah, it's been done before. However, it's early in this series' run and I expect it to further explore its themes as it progresses.

To denigrate the show as a "titty program" isn't really fair. The nudity isn't meant to titillate.

The themes in this series have very little to do with the film. The mystery of robots having souls is something that they're clearly 100% behind from the start, the show is just then a television series, drawn out mystery for exactly the required length of time and throwing tits in when they can. It's not unique in that regard, but the makers or the robots aren't written in a way that I find interesting. I think it's a show that looks cool and seems mysterious but I'm not into it.

Please bear in mind my response was to a person who said that this show is so good that only massive societal collapse can explain why someone doesn't like it.
