Still my lasting impression of Gronk will forever be:

Heard the following Gronk stat on the radio this AM - and it pretty much defines the guy -

Touchdowns per game: Point Six Nine

Pass interference going to be reviewable for the next season.

This is going to go awfully. But as long as the Saints situation doesn't happen again I'm OK with it.

I'm fine with them trying this. It'll really depend on how well they implement it, if they only use it for the blatant miss-calls for which it's being enacted then great and I expect they'll know not to overuse it. So yea implement it for a season and see how it goes. Why not. Just be quick about it and don't let replay reviews take too long.

No doubt we will be the first team to get punished by it.

I would rather no rule change here but I would rather make it reviewable all game with challenges then just in the last two minutes. Either go all the way or don't do it at all.

The amount of challenges won't change so it really shouldn't affect the length of the game besides in the last two minutes. Obviously for ticky tack shit, nothing should be overturned.

It is reviewable all game, no? My understanding is a coach can challenge this at any time just like any other challenge. The 2-minute rule is the same as always - in the final 2 minutes of a half, all reviews are booth-initiated.

My concern increased when I saw that the NFL said this Brandin Cooks play should have been PI. Yes, sure, it's PI but this is not blatant enough to be overturned on booth review in my opinion, despite being a crucial play. If they would overturn this, I feel like there will be LOTS of overturns.

But I also know that this rule was just passed and they have the whole offseason/pre-season to come up with a fair threshold for when to overturn. The NFL doesn't want a million overturns either.

yes. sorry I probably could have explained it better. There was another idea thrown out there to just make it reviewable in the last two minutes. I think the final outcome was the better of the two.

I mean when you hold the receiver's arm throughout the whole process, it seems like an obvious interference call.

My first worry was the hail mary at the end of games and how teams can just jack it up when down big hoping they will review it in the booth in the final two minutes. I think the coaches and the league is of the understanding that hail mary's won't be examined in the same way.

It's entirely possible I'm underestimating how bad the PI was on that play. There was arm contact but I don't think the arm was grabbed and Cooks was still able to bring his left hand up to attempt a catch. So I think that is on the ticky tack side when it comes to overturning a ruling on the field. Again I'm not saying it's not PI and shouldn't be called, I'm just saying if that meets the criteria of an overturn then there could be 5 overturns a game.

I agree that shouldnt be overturned.

My issue is going to be just like last season where there was new rules for preseason, no one knew what to call and not call and then it change all through the season as well.

Passing interference calls need to be reviewable. You cannot convince me otherwise.

You would if it happened to the Pats. Of course, the Pats would have gotten that call.

That Hitchens one was fine maybe Stafford shouldn't have fumbled the ball away if you wanted to win

That is as obvious of a pass interference as you can get. If you hit the guy before the ball gets there while not turning your head it's a flag. You have to play the ball. That is as by the book as it gets. If he turned around at all then the cowboy fans can have an argument.

We obviously didn't want to win with all the f-ups they did in the game. However, that blown call showed tge refs didnt want us to win either. At least now being able to challenge things like this can help.

This will probably add another 15-20 minutes total to a week's worth of games.

eh I am guessing it will be a little less than that. If you think there will be one extra booth review each game. I really do believe they will only go to the booth review if it's blatant.

I don't mean any one game will get 15 minutes, but over the course of a weekend, when we get 2 games on Sunday afternoon, then Sunday night, Monday and often Thursday nights, then in total it will add 15-20 minutes. When a replay happens, it can be more than just a few minutes.

This is not great. I don't claim to know a ton about Schiano but he definitely seems like a major prick so I was never that enthused about him being DC but having to replace him this late into the offseason cycle will be tough. idk if there are any other good candidates still out there. they can promote from within, sure, but having lost patricia a year ago and flores this year (plus various assistant coaches they took with them), the staff is already very light on experience in the system. belichick can take on the DC role but that just takes his time away from elsewhere. side note, Jerod Mayo was just hired as a linebackers coach which I love. He's the man.

Surely there is something going on with Schiano for this to happen. I heard maybe he's being investigated for domestic violence but that is just from a reddit comment so who knows if it's total bullshit, but it wouldn't shock me. Or maybe he has a sick family member or something. Who knows but there must be something going on.

I think coaching turnover will be a MAJOR obstacle this year for the pats even though people don't often look at it as a concern with a HC like belichick. thank god mcdaniels stayed (other side of the ball, but still).

I hate it. Jordan wasn't flashy, but he knew how to get 4-5 yards in most of his carries which I feel they need.

Eagles should love him, he's better than Ajayi between the tackles for sure.

Always a plus, his hands could use work, but Philly has other backs that can do that.

Not quite sure if Cohen can be a feature back yet

Cohen is better as a platoon back. Howard wasn’t very good last year statistically but I agree it’s a good add for the Eagles. Only giving up a 5th/6th for a year of Howard is worth it, maybe he’ll be better in a new system.

Schiano's comment was that he needed to spend more time on his faith and family. It wouldn't surprise me if there was some investigation going on, and with the Pats lawyers busy fighting for Kraft, they don't need any more negative publicity. I agree with you about McDaniels. The sense that I got was Belichek spends much more of his head coaching time on defense than offense anyway, but I'd say McDaniels is really about to earn his money this year, with no Gronk.

I read an article posted by one of the chicago beat writers that said Howard only gave up 1.5 sacks in his 3 years when pass blocking. that is pretty damn good. Eagles should still add another RB in the draft. With the addition of Howard, it's not a priority to get one in the first two rounds. They can focus on the defensive and offensive lines with those 3 picks and go with RB in the middle rounds.

I wouldn’t mind him on the Colts if it’s a one year deal. Two years tops, given the state of his knees. But him and Mack together in the backfield could be fun.

Good article about the dysfunction of the Rodgers/McCarthy relationship in Green Bay.

    https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...d-in-green-bay

(also very long, I only read the first half).

is Aaron Rodgers a confirmed asshole?

I am a Packers fan so probably biased here but the majority of the stuff is coming from Greg Jennings who has a massive ax to grind. Other than that there were not many named sources who were anti Aaron.

I read the rest of the article and while yes I think Rodgers is sensitive and passive aggressive and not the best at bringing a team together, this also reminds me of last year when articles were written about tension in the Pats locker room. When you achieve greatness you get scrutinized. A season later, no one cares about the Belichick/Brady tensions and Alex Guerrero's access to the team because they won again. I expect the Packers will do the same and Rodgers' character flaws will be forgotten because they pale in comparison to what he adds to a team on the field with his play. Still, I think this post mortem on the McCarthy era is a succulent off-season story (just like the Pats story was last year) strictly because it's about a top-5 QB all time. If this was about whoever else, Jameis Wintson or Joe Flacco, I certainly wouldn't be reading.

Russell Wilson signed his extension this morning. 4 years, $140 million and a $65 million signing bonus. Highest paid player in the NFL.

We all know that the "highest paid QB" is a carousel that gets broken once or twice every year. If anyone where to follow Rodgers on the wheel, it would make sense to be this guy, who is arguably his better.

Russ from 2015-2018: 124 TDs, 37 INTs, 101.5 Passer Rating, 64.8% completion, 7.8 Y/A. Brilliant hall of fame career so far for the 2 time NFC champion, 1 time world champion.

I picked the 4 year span rather arbitrarily to lean towards recency - but his entire career stat sheet is impeccable.

Thats just straight up false. Over the last 4 years Rogers and Wilson split 2-2 in QBR on the season. Same with Yards. Same with completion percentage.

I was referring to stats like completion %, passer rating, yards per attempt, yards per completion, TD%, game started and total passing yards/touchdowns, all of which favor Russ in the last 4 years.

    QBR though, that's.... something.

But like I said. COmpetition percentage was split 2-2 over the last 4 years. So was Yards 2-2.

I was looking at totals over the 4 year span rather than seeing who won each stat year by year. But sure, maybe we can agree they’ve had similar effectiveness.

And then when you consider one is younger and healthier...

The totals are skewed because Rodgers was injured. But calling into question his health is a bit much. It was a broken collar bone and a broken leg. Its not like he missed time with a pulled ham string.

Rodgers is the better player. Russ still deserves to get paid considering the changing economics with the salary cap and how much more of his prime he's got compared to when Aaron signed his contract. That was after an injury hit season too. The Seahawks run to the playoff's was impressive last season when they were seemingly in rebuild mode, his deal was up at the right time.

Kirk Cousins has forever broken the payscale for QB's. Anybody that's won a few games under centre without being incompetent can command huge salaries now.

Teams have to get lucky and draft a QB that's got potential to bubble up. If you do that and they show promise, you've got to spend like crazy on all the "ancillary" pieces to build to hope it all meshes at the right time because you're going to start losing those pieces when the QB is due for a deal. At that point, you have to start hoping to hit with frugal/shrewd free agent signings or savvy draft picks.

It's become a part of the strategy lately. Rams and Chiefs last year with QB's on rookie deals, and the Browns are all in this year with Baker in his second year. The window for the Super Bowl is that rookie deal, unless you can get a QB coming off an injury or something.

I had to laugh at this. Best coach ever, best tight end ever, and a few great receivers throughout his career including Edleman, Cooks, and Randy Moss. Not saying Brady isn't the greatest but don't play that game that he plays with the least.

I will grant you on the head coach, but Brady has won SIX championships, and those other players have not been around for all of them.

You're making it seem like Wilson played with chopped liver, when the lone title that he did win came with one of the best defenses in recent memory, the Legion of Boom, not to mention he had Pro Bowlers all around him on offense in Golden Tate, Marshawn Lynch and Max Unger. Oh, and Brady and crew did MORE when they defeated Wilson and his Seahawks the following year.

Not to mention, Wilson was the 75th overall pick, in the third round. Brady was not taken until the 199th pick in the 6th round. That tells you how the their talent was regarded by the rest of the league - and clearly shows Brady did MORE with LESS. Especially in his first few years.

Since he has played with a lot less than Wilson, and he won more than Wilson, there's really no disputing the fact the Brady is the real king of doing More with Less.

When did I argue that about Wilson? I was saying that wasn't true either. Basically any successful quarterback that wins a super bowl actually has great talent and coaching around them in my opinion.

You are right that those great players weren't always around brady. In his first three he had a much better defense on those teams. He has earned every super bowl and should be considered the greatest but not going to agree that he makes the most out of the least.

It’s interesting that offensive linemen seem to have the highest average scores. I don’t know enough about the nitty gritty of football, is being on the offensive line really that cognitively demanding relative to other positions? Seems like a very physical position. QBs being high isn’t surprising

It's really just a normal occurrence for olinemen to be a bunch of big, burly, bright, thoughtful dudes.

Also as it pertains to football playing oline can often be a thinking position as much as a brawny one. Line calls, defending stunts and other blitzing games, and having an understanding of where to be moving with an opponent as a play is supposed to develop.

    Mega trade alert:

Seahawks agreed to trade their franchise player, DE Frank Clark, to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2019 first-round pick, a 2020 second-round pick and an exchange of third-round picks this year, per league sources.

Big win for the Seahawks here IMO. Awesome return for a franchise tagged player.

Great deal for Seattle. Can't help but wonder if something similar was on the table for Clowney.

No but I’m wondering where is McShay?? Why isn’t he on the ESPN panel?

Also I’m trying not to go on Twitter and have picks spoiled. No spoiling in here plz. (Also I’ll probably get bored and stop watching and/or start checking Twitter within 45 minutes lol. 10 minutes between picks is an eternity)

In unfortunately disgusting news, horrible things coming out about that piece of shit Tyreek Hill. I hope to never see him play a down of football again.

Is it so hard not to beat family members or your wife/girlfriend while playing sports? Millions are on the line and you cannot handle not being an asshole for ten years while playing? I guess assholes can't help themselves.

Yeah it's definitely the millions on the line that should stop people assaulting their family

If I got paid millions of dollars a year with the stipulation that I don't partake in risky behavior (like driving motorcycles) or commit horrible and inexcusable crimes, I think I could handle that. Money should be a motivator to these idiots when Ray Rice shows how being an abusive asshole can ruin your career. Otherwise, try being a decent human being and be loved by millions for more than just your talent. Works for Drew Brees.

And nice dropping Taylor Swift's new album during the draft. Damnit ABC.

Yeah and most people could also handle not earning millions of dollars and also not being a giant scumbag too

Bad news for the Titans and Texnas. The Jags just got that much better on D and added a dude that's gonna be chasing down their QBs and blowing though their shitty lines twice a year.
