When it comes to poker I'm bad at cheating but good at duelling. This did not work out well for my poker buddies up at the ranch.

I'm on holiday for a week after next week, so think that I might fill the time in with some Red Dead Redemption.

Mine arrived this morning but got 3 exams next week, so it's here just in time to sit there taunting me tonight while I'm reading a load of pharmacology.

ECG I thought you were already done med school or is this for your research bit? Pharmacology is a bitch though, you've got to focus on that.

Anybody have any tips, without explicitly telling me, what they mean in the outfits screen when they say "Search Thieves Landing" or something like that. Do you have to look for the scrap somewhere?

I'm only first year Medicine, I already have a PhD and worked in research already. It's not very difficult at this stage but this game looks like it could be life-consuming.

I nearly bought it today in HMV, but I've held off. I'm going to Belfast next week so I'll have a watch of my mate playing it and make my mind up. I got The Road on Bluray instead for £12.99 and the 5 disc Blade Runner set for 6. mental.

Oh I know for the elegant suit, but for some of the others there are multiple things you need to do before you can buy it from Thieves Landing.

    Also I'm shit at Poker.

I haven't had a game experience that good in a long time. Can't put it down!

I was blown away when I got to Mexico with that song playing louder than usual while I was riding. I can't describe it very well, but it was one of the best gaming moment of my life!

Someone knows the artist/name of that song by the way?

How the fuck do you rope a horse?! This is taking me much longer than it should. I did it on foot once, but can't do it on a horse.

I always manage to rope it, but it gets away? Maybe my horse riding is too out of control. Hold RB or RT? Maybe that's where I'm going wrong, I'm holding RT.

hold LT, then press RT to capture it. Once you've got it, immediately hold RB and don't let go of RB until you hogtie or get on the horse.

Right on. Thanks man, that was bugging me for a while.

As for the game, so far its awesome. Like others, exploring the crazy amounts of things to do is the appeal of the game. And so far, I've enjoyed the missions as well. Granted, I've only scratched the surface so I'm assuming it gets even better. Dueling is pretty awesome.

Can you shoot only 1 bullet in duels or do you always have to fill that meter and empty your gun?

a purple question mark should pop up when you are within the area. i find that doing the tracking for each outfit in the best way to find the items you need.

Argh, my game seems to be stuck in a glitch

On the Attack on Fort Mercer mission...

Edit - After three tries, turned my 360 off and finally it worked. What an annoying glitch.

Bought this today (eating ramen the next 2 weeks now but worth it) and I fucking love it so far.

I would rather stay home all night tonight playing it, but alas I have to go to a coworker's party. BOOOOO.

So...blackjack kills just a little too much time, both in the game and in real life, huh?

That said, truly my only complaint of any kind so far.

Went and got this on release day and have played it a fair bit since, though not a thousand hours as it's been nice outside.

Fantastic game so far, the voice acting is marvellous and the individual animations when you shoot people say in the arm are so frighteningly realistic. I've only done around 5-6 missions in total so far but have 3 rooms and spend most of the time out shooting hawks and coyotes for the bunce.

How far into the game, number of missions-wise, is it 'til you open up the southern end and can go wind up some Mexicans?

Also, the map is mental isn't it, it's almost too big

Yeah, all of a sudden cheating got a lot easier. I guess you just had to get the touch down.

Funny thing about Herbert Moon... he challenged me to a duel when he caught me cheating, so I shot him dead, of course. Then the next day as I was riding through Armadillo, he came out of his general store asking me to chase down a robber. I guess when you kill shopkeepers they resurrect without any memories.

Somewhere in the 20-25 range, I would think -- and just getting into Mexico is a a bit of a chore.

Ah I'm way off that then. I'm enjoying shooting wildlife and then getting cash so much that I'm not bothered about missions for the time being. I did run into a crap mission with a chap near Armadillo close to death wanting me to ferry him back to the town before he dies, with bandits on the way for good measure. I got frustrated and kept trying to go over rough ground which makes him lose loads of health. He died and I threw a highly mature strop

Fuck I'm terrible at the 5 fingered game and horseshoes. I did win a game of poker though, without cheating.

A bastard tried to steal my horse too, while I was on one of those stranger missions. I managed to kill him good. I haven't actually spent much time exploring the stores and buying stuff. I should probably do that more.

I just got my first bounty on my head (I'm still very early in the game and was trying to decide whether I wanted to be a good guy. Then some mofo drew his gun on me and I blew his head off.) Now I must decide whether to pay the bounty or get that letter stuff done.

There isn't much water in the game, so it's not that much of a nuisance.

How the fuck do you break the yellow stallion?

I've been getting bucked for a good 20 minutes now.

I can break a regular horse but not the stallion.

    ... yeah about that....

I was using the right stick the whole time to try and break it when all I needed to do was use the left.

The only real advantage that I can think of that John being able to swim would provide would be the ability to swim into and out of Mexico, and I'm not even somewhat sure that wouldn't be completely counterproductive anyhow.

I disabled my Live account some time ago, as I'd found myself dumping a bit too much money on pretty much every bit of GH and RB downloadable content known to man -- then I moved somewhere with truly shitty wireless Internet -- then once that was fixed, my wireless 360 router went a bit nutty on me.

I plan a Best Buy trip later this week, though, mostly because online play on this bad boy has gotta be the tits.

So much god damned fun. It's actually deterred from the story mode for me because I have so much fun killing other posses and gangs and marshalls and randoms.

Pretty awesome riding 6 deep in a posse all on horses through the country.

Who gives a shit about the water? It doesn't play into the game from what I've seen so far.

It plays into it in one way, which I only found out because of morbid curiosity.

If you hogtie a criminal and walk him into the shallow water, then drop him with the intent of death by drowning, YOU die.

Well, two ways, I guess -- horses move extremely slowly in the water, but that's just realism.

Amazing game, aside from all the glitches, but they're more funny than game-breaking.

For those that want to skip the skinning animation, which is great the first couple of times but tedious after that, just ride your horse on top of the corpse, get off and skin. It's done instantly without any animation.

And next time someone steals your horse, just whistle

On the swimming, I know people will laugh at this, but maybe you can excuse it by saying the character can't swim. People always expect game characters to be able to do anything. I remember playing that awful recent Alone in the Dark game, and the character got into a car and started hotwiring it, and since the character was meant to be a resurrected investigator who died in 1938, it make no sense that he could hotwire a car, but they probably figured it's a game so the dude should do whatever you want.

I've played this a bit over the weekend. It's pretty good but there's some irritating things, mainly to do with the 3rd person viewpoint and it really does just feel like GTA in a new setting (but that's good, it badly needed a new setting). I like the game but it's not taken me in the way Fallout 3 or Oblivion did.

One big thing for me is the horses, they stated they'd done a lot to get the horses right but it doesn't feel like it. They're a big part of the game but they don't feel like they're actually something with a mind of their own.

It's the same as Assasin's Creed where Altair couldn't swim. These guys are supposed to be badasses, but you could be rendered helpless if you fell in a puddle. How would they have got by? It's a realism thing. I see what you say about things like hotwiring though.

Swimming in games is rarely ever realistic anyway. There's no need to swim in this game.

Like I say, the horses are a major part of the game and they haven't got them quite right. You can go speeding into a barrier that is too high to jump and the horse just stops dead. It should rear up and buck you off. Stopping them is like hitting the brakes on a car and they have a fairly tight turning circle too for a large, 4-legged beast.

I've had a horse rear back and buck me off a couple times... but yeah, many times I've just stopped in front of a barrier with no consequence either.

And the way horses make 180 degree turns in the game is pretty darn realistic. They can arrange their legs in a way that they can turn 180 and pretty much stay in the same spot.

You can bet bucked off if you spur too much, that's the only nod to the horses being live animals really.

People in that era would have seen water like at best once a month when they bathed. How the fuck would he have been able to swim. By magic.

It is only recently that most people know how to swim. It isn't a gift humans are born in. Go chuck a few babies into a pool and see what happens. It is realistic that he CANT swim.

When you try to go too near a cliff at a reasonable speed they snort and just won't go near it.

I think they just have trouble when you are going at speed.

I'm loving the challenges. I have to knife 5 wolves to death... fucking hell.

And the mountain lions are reet cunts. I can't kill them.

I've pushed on a bit and have opened the first new area. I want some new guns.

    Liars dice... any tips?

I bloody love my horse. I wish you could name them or customise the saddle or something... they missed a bit of a trick with the whole horse + man relationship.

Gun tricks would have been ace too. Don't know how that'd work though. Imagine being able to launch you gun up in the air and catch it after a duel. They could have tied that into the fame metre thing. Do cool shit and your fame increases more.

On top of all that, they're all too adept at being able to trudge through terrain that there's no real reason to believe that any horse actually could, or at least with not that degree of ease. They can't climb sharp cliffs - seems that's just about all they can't do, however.

i've only really ever played one 3D game with good swimming controls, monster hunter tri. infact the swimming is probably less clunky than the land play in that game. is remember donkey kong country's swimming levels were a beast. anyway despite my complaining and disgust at Rockstar for the inferior ps3 version, i will be buying when it goes to 17.99 on one of those monday zavvi sales in a few weeks.

Tomb Raider on PS1 got swimming right IMO, in that being underwater with alligators or sharks was a genuinely terrifying experience because, unlike on hard ground, you can't use tactics of any kind to maintain the upper hand in battle, nor do you have access to weapons (generally). You're utterly helpless and at the mercy of whatever is in the water with you.

I got this game Saturday but haven't had a chance to play it much. Thus far I seem to enjoy horse-shoes way too much.

I'm hoping to have more time for it later this week. I've done a few missions for Bonnie and the Marshall, now I've got this new guy to go and see but I continuously get side-tracked by the other neat stuff in the game.

I haven't been online with it yet but I look forward to it.

No, though I have whistled for it, and the fucking thing came over a cliff, fell down the thing and then died at my feet.

Then I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said fresh and it had a dice in a mirror. If anything I could say that the cab was rare, but I thought na forgot it yo home to Bel Air.

I managed to get the game in the end, whipped off to the 24 hour ASDA who for whatever reason hadnt actually even put the game out. In fact, me asking for it was the first that they'd known about the game and I got the impression that some work experience guy was going to get in quite a bit of trouble about it. Still, that was the least of my problems cos I thought that my girlfriend had picked the game up and put it in her back, but you wouldnt have wanted to be in my shoes when I pulled up to my house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the Cabbie 'Yo home, smell you later'.

It sucks that you didn't get that part, it's the best part of the game imo.

Who else has been Cougered? The other night I was minding my own business down by Stillwater Creek and suddenly one took me clean off my horse and killed me.

Last night me and a mate were online in the Tall trees area and we were being mauled every few minutes by them. I must have killed about fifty of the buggers but died about twenty times. I think I will go up there tonight with my new Winchester and a bad attitude.

This may be a silly question but what are the consequences when you die in this game? Do you lose money? Ammo? What?

You just re-start from last save point in the timeline, but at one of your houses or campsite.

That's what I thought, just wasn't sure if I was losing fame or money or something as well without realizing it. Thanks.

Yeah. Three coyotes ran past me whilst I was riding along, in my attempts to shoot them I plugged my horse in the back of the head.

I also got my 'Dastardly' achievement last night. I only wish I had a moustache to twirl as I did it.

Here's the song that plays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IkvAb6THQY So I guess you could just listen to that while riding through Mexico, but having it just come on out of nowhere is what makes it a great moment.

Did you call your own horse when you got there or use the one that was there? That horse might be what triggers the song.

It might also be because you get off the horse or something. I did that part twice and I'm pretty sure the song was longer the 2nd time as I think I got off my horse the 1st time.

And thanks for that link. I was looking for that.

Aren't you suppose to get the soundtrack of that game if you got the special edition? Anyone knows how to get it?

Sounds interesting enough -- just so long as it doesn't interrupt MADtv. That's still on, right?
    Sounds fairly interesting.
