    Rajah Book Club

Rajah book club club it is.

    YEAH:

    Smeagol
GBF - Book 1, Lord of the Barnyard
    Jordo
    Melly
    MTR
    kneeneighbor
    Cewsh
    Judas Iscariot
    BigAle
    MarlonDingle
    Donald
    Version6
    The Rosk
    Slare

The rules of Rajah Book Club Club:

    1. We fight to the death. With books.
    2. Nominator selects three books.
    3. We use 72 hours to vote ranking each book 1-2-3.
3b. Book with most first place votes is the one.
3c. In the event of a tie, nominator selects the book.

Anyone is welcome to participate for each book chosen, or sit it out for the next one. If life gets in the way that's understandable.
Setting some guidelines will also encourage me to read quicker than I do.

Book 1. Lord of the Barnyard with 32 points.
    Start date TBD

Thought this was going to be a thread about how we all start a book at the same time and discuss it, that would be pretty neat.

Votes yes. I was fooled by the way I searched and ended up not seeing that thread.

I thought this is the book I had, but it's actually "Quiet: The Power Of Introverts In A World That Can't Stop Talking". Have you seen or read that one?

we had a book club at one point. I believe the Rosk led it but I don't know how much traction it ended up getting.

I seem to remember that the first book that was chosen was On the Road And it was so god-awful that I think we gave up after that.

A couple years ago, when I was still at my last job, I read I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell and loved it. I ended up passing it around the warehouse and at least 7 or 8 guys read it after me. We'd end up laughing about it once another guy finished it. At one point one of the guys, an ex-con and current OG Crip, says, in the middle of the warehouse "yo, we should all read the same book at the same time so we can talk about it during the day."

Another guy speaks up and says back "like a book club?"

The Crip immediately changed his mind and that was the last time he agreed to read any book.

I read Star Trek novels and fanfiction. I spend hours in my car every week and listen to books on an app on my phone. I am on my 26th book. It is so much better than listening to the same radio songs or sports radio for hours on end.

I've been really enjoying the Jon Ronson books. So far I've read "The Psychopath Test", "Frank" and "So You've Been Publicly Shamed". Highly recommend them.

Hillbilly Elegy. Great read but kind of a downer. Not as depressing as The Glass Castle but, still, not uplifting at all.

Shit yeah. Love the idea of a book club, as long as the books aren't boring.

To make this work I can just update OP for who's participating in said book club ..... club. I can't commit to reading anything new just yet but I think once we gather a list of participants, let one person start to nominate a book. I suppose that would go to the first person to mention the idea in this thread. With any number of people having different interests in what we're reading even if we get like 3 or 4 people reading the same book it can be a thing. Or nominate a book, have a vote and go from there.

Let's nominate a book and vote on it. I'll probably skip the graphic novels as I have no interest whatsoever in them but I am all in when the regular books win the vote.

I bought this and couldn't get that deep into it. I thought it was going to be something slightly different and was disappointed.

However I'm totally down for a book club, I love to read but I tend to get stuck on certain authors and never read anything else. Mostly King, Joe Hill and David Wong.

PM me if this ever gets going

I updated the list of participants judging by responses in the thread thus far. If I missed anybody let me know. I thought I'd use the OP to keep track of participants, books nominated/read, and who suggested which ones.

This is awesome. My only fear with this (and I think this might have been what happened last time), is that people read at a different pace and we should probably set up some kind of realistic timeline.

Maybe 2 weeks or 3 weeks per book depending on the length and then everybody writes thoughts and recaps. we could obviously discuss it as well during the reading using spoiler tags although I am not sure if people will really want to click those before they have finished the book.

Also for some etiquette points, I think it would make sense to reinforce that people should not be dicks. If we are having a discussion on chapter one for instance, the people that have read ahead should not get involved in speculative parts of the discussion.

I do think we should figure out a way that this will keep momentum while remaining organic. Maybe I'm overthinking it but I really hope this thread thrives.

Getting back into reading has been on my resolution list the past three New Years and hasn't happened.

    My first nomination is:

Lord of the Barnyard by Tristan Egolf

I haven't read it but the wife thinks it will be perfect for this and she is an avid reader and also hot. It sounds like this would be a good book for chapter discussion as well.

I don't own it either so I will have to acquire it along with everyone else.

We could just be clear about how far in we should be. Like if we start on a Monday, Wednesday we can talk about up to chapter 3, Friday up to chapter 6, etc. Something like that, anyway.

I hear people mention the book sapiens all the time too. I plan on reading it at some point so it may be worth a nomination too. It's non fiction though

Tribe as well is a non fiction book I plan on getting too.

I'm not the boss of you now.....

I was thinking each person nominating can provide three book titles that we each rank, and then decided on which one has the most first place votes is the one we go with. So since you named one, if you want to add two more start there. I'll update the participants of the royal book rumble list in a bit as I see V6 has joined in and Donald, are you also doing this to yourself?

Someone asked about graphic novels, a little busy with work to check right now who. While not my thing, if there are enough people interested then it's included. Just no magazines shit. GBF get two more book titles named and either we have a vote in by Friday or for Monday.

I used to have an app, it was called ReadMe or something, and basically you would look up a book by ISBN number, and you put the page the book begins on, and the page it ended on, then you would start the clock in the app, read and at the end of your session you hit stop on the clock and plug in the number you finished at. It would then calculate how many more sessions you'd need to finish the book etc. It was really fucking cool and then they decided to stop the app and I got a new phone and can't find a similar app like it.

Sure could. I think if we have a vote set for Monday perhaps, Friday get the book? Just throwing some ideas around and seeing what sticks.

I definitely read that but I’m not sure if that was me.

I did the Rajah Video Game Club in a similar vein, but did a game that was too complicated for everyone and everyone handed in their badges after the first month.

I would definitely be interested in this, a good boot up the arse to read more.

Just finished the Audiobook of this and very much enjoyed it.

I've got some work stuff to deal with but shortly I will post the rest of the nominations and I will either cut and paste or provide a link to the Amazon reviews of each.

Would be fun to see a Movie Club, or a Music Club pop up, where we make it a goal to see a movie or listen to an album by a certain date and we can discuss it.

We used to have this thing where you'd be drawn with someone and would have to give them something new to read/listen to/watch that was a pretty good thread, can't remember what the thread was now.

That would be you. I figured I'd throw it back to give people more than one option on the book. I don't know a thing about the first one you mentioned but I'll get a look so I know what I'm doing.

My aunt, a retired high school English teacher, referred me to "The Guardians Series"; it's a three novel set by Jack Whyte about Robert Bruce and William Wallace. I'm into the third book, it is real good stuff.

I own Whyte's "A Dream of Eagles", a historical fiction series which deals with the creation of Camelot/Merlin/King Arthur/Lancelot; I fucking love it, have read the whole thing four times now...

    And updated on page 1:

    Barnyard (5 1st, 2 2nd, 1 3rd) 32 points
    Death (1 1st, 5 2nd, 2 3rd) 22 points
    Ruins (2 1st, 1 2nd, 5 3rd) 18 points

Somewhere along the way I missed a vote it seems but I totaled this up from all 8 people who voted: myself, GBF, Melly, Jordo, Donald, Slare, MTR, and BigAle and these appear correct and current. So at this time it looks like Barnyard will be the first book, unless some shit happens before morning.

So Friday to... next Wednesday to read? Not the whole book, I'd have to see how the chapters are broken up, as the book is over 400 pages. If we went with something like first 100-150 pages or 10 chapters, whichever happens first, where it ends a chapter I think that would be a good point to begin discussion of it, unless anyone wished to do so beforehand.

We should maybe consider doing discussions every 3 or 4 chapters?

That works for me. Usually by the 100th page or so I forget what the hell happened a long ways back if it seemed insignificant.

I like the thought of breaking it up. Especially since I am squeezing this in between novels I am reading for school.

I requested my copy via the library. We didn't own it but some other libraries in the state have it should have it by the end of the week.

Same here, getting mine from the library and only day this week I can get over there is Friday. I'll know more about layout of the book then, so depending if it's 5 chapters in 20 pages or 10 chapters in 50 pages I'm for either. I don't know who else is willing to make time for reading over the weekend but I thought Monday would be a good time to begin discussion. If a larger number are for Wednesday, I'm expecting to be mostly unavailable then but I'll be around sometime.

Does your copy have any damage to it or curious drawings inside? I figured since you got your book first we'll discuss that while we make you wait.
