Gimmicks you hate that others probably loved

The gimmick I hated that others seemed to have loved was Steve Austins "What?!" gimmick, just really found it annoying and I was never really fond of the Broken Hardy gimmick either........

What are some you didn't like that others probably loved?

The "WHAT" gimmick went from funny, to annoying, quick.

I hated Right to Censor. Literally changed the channel sort of hate.

    New Day.

I wouldn't say I HATE the gimmick. I've warmed up to it over the last 2 years for sure but I couldn't stand it the first year or so. Even my son was like, you're crazy for not liking New Day. And that was when they were supposed to be heels lol.

Another one is Big Poppa Pump. So many people liked him, or at least liked the catchphrase and I hated it. Hated the gimmick, the look. I wanted the Scott Steiner of 1990 wearing neon pink singlets with a long mullet not Superstar Gram version 8.78

I liked them at first (Too Much) because they were heels and the gimmick suited them being pretentious, think they are superstar asswipes.

That only lasted about two months though then they rebranded them as dancing jackass faces.

Enzo and Cass. First appearance on RAW was exciting, but it's basically the same thing every week, and sometimes they win a match.
Did people actually love the Eugene gimmick?

The previous Y2J run when he teamed with Ambrose and Reigns. He did nothing half of what he accomplished in his current run as far as a character. Just felt like a guy hanging on to being relevant while being poorly booked.

I'll list three gimmicks I hated: Evolution, Cena, and JBL- - they pretty much took me way from following WWE for nearly 10 years.

To elaborate: Where Evoltion was I was sick of HHH and his shit. Flair was too old to be taken seriously for me anymore. I really didn't like Orton in his early days. Batista was alright, but I didn't like the company he kept.

But anyway, having this stable run amok over everyone was annoying. And then Cena started getting his push- first as annoying white rapper heel, then as a thuggy good guy, then as the saluting, never give up, super face modern spin on Hogan he became. Coming off the attitude era, I just couldn't stand the guy as the new face of the company. I've come to terms with him over time, and he's come a long way, but I still love to sing "John Cena sucks!" every time he appears.

And then JBL- I enjoyed his character as Bradshaw of the APA- then they flipped the switch overnight and made him JBL, and all of a sudden this aging tag team guy is top title heel. I just hated it- again it was just like "this is the guy they really are going to have as a top heel?" And Bradshaw was never really that good in the ring. Decent mid-card roughneck in the tag division, or a lower card singles guy, but I just wasn't buying it when they changed his character overnight and pushed it to the moon. I've also kind of come to terms with him too over time, and don't mind him as an announcer (even with all the recent controversy), but I didn't enjoy the schtick at all back in the day

But anyway, it was a combo of these three "gimmicks" combined with other developments around that time - Rock/Stone cold leaving the company as regular performers, Brock & Goldberg walking out the door (especially Brock, who was the one post-attitude homegrown guy who could have carried the torch in his younger days unitl he quit (now he pretty much just phones it in). Guys like Edge/Eddie/Benoit just didn't so the same for me as top guys (yes I didn't know how good we really had it then), Angle stopped being funny heel, and was more mean spirited later, which I didn't care for.

A lot of things just made me sick of the product and check out from about 2004 to 2013- where it took me noticing The Shield and The Wyatts, and the rise of Daniel Bryan which kind of brought me back into the fold again.

Literally everyone hated JBL back then. It's a shame Twitter didn't exist when he won the title, it would have been hilarious.

I never understood the love for Mr Kennedy. Hard to say that I hated him, but I was completely indifferent to him.

I had no love for the pairing of Finlay and Hornswoggle. I much preferred Finlay's solo days brawling with Lashley and Benoit.

I thought he was liked on here by a decent chunk of guys. I feel like I thought I was missing out by not watching Smackdown

I actually liked hating JBL back then. There was a segment where he was catching illegal immigrants at the Mexican border and screaming at them that we don't speak Mexican here we speak American.

Which of course is absurd since those aren't languages.

Rhyno/Slater didn't really entertain me and it seemed pretty well received here.

I think I'd be more likely to have things I love that everyone else hated

First time I remember turning on WWF I remember hating Austin because I didn't get why people liked him when he was being an asshole.

I recall it being mostly negative on here at the end of 2004 when I got back into wrestling. But there was a vocal minority who began to defend him and the tide seemed to turn when he dropped the title and wasn't the focus of the show all the time. Also when he did Godzilla promo.

The love for JBL on these boards back in the day was ridiculous. People were saying he was a better in ring performer than HBK.

It was amazing, they changed his character and suddenly some people thought of him as the top performer in the company.

For the most part it's not true. I'd say 90% of people thought JBL was the shits and didn't deserve to be in a main event slot. Someone like Hacksaw or Osi may have said JBL was a better in ring performer than HBK at the time though, but then they really hated HBK's ring work in 2004/2005.

Was it not that a bunch of people started praising JBL after the Eddie match? Of course there was a lot that disagreed as well. That match has been pretty polarising on here.

I hated Evolution with a passion. Triple H's very own 4 Horseman I've expressed this before, but I hated JBfuckin'L. 'nuff said.

As for non WWE gimmicks, Joker Sting. WTF?! I know there are people who thought it was absolutely brilliant.

Not sure what the problem would be there. He didn't say he was God, he said he was a wrestling god. Unless there's some wrestling god you worship...

Equating yourself with God in any way is blasphemy. God (in the form of a pre-incarnate Jesus) did have the most famous wrestling match ever though.

80's - Sting - A beach dude who wore facepaint for some fucking reason.

90's - SCSA - I liked Stunning Steve. It was like that guy didn't exist anymore. I couldn't transfer my appreciation from one gimmick to the other. It was like Stunning Steve didn't exist anymore and was wiped off the planet. Kind of like the way I miss Bruce Jenner. It's like, "hey, where did you go." It's almost like they're dead, even though both are still alive.

00's - Deuce & Domino - Just why, man? Still to this day I don't know which one was Deuce and which was Domino.

Current decade - The Usos(pre-heel turn) Shiny shorts, taped up shoes, terrible generic ring attire, they looked like really bad create-a-wrestlers. They were also so bland and kid friendly. Now they have just the right edge to them. Big fan of their current run and I think they are underappreciated because American Alpha gets all the internet love.

Stunning Steve Austin gradually became Stone Cold Steve Austin. The Stone Cold character was the winner, though.

The Hollywood Blonds are fun to watch, but better than Stone Cold Steve Austin? Nah. Stone Cold is the best pro wrestling character of all time. Bar none.

Sure, it's hard to debate the greatness of the Stone Cold character. When he was having that great feud with Ricky Steamboat though and before that with Bobby Eaton, man, that's my favorite period of his career because he was a pretty good wrestler and worked with some amazing vets.

One of my friends who used to watch back in the Attitude Era didn't like Austin that much because he wasn't drinking the beer properly and kept spilling it

I'll flip it and say that I actually enjoyed JBL and Eugene, at first at last. Both of them got way overexposed fairly quickly though. Think I enjoyed them because they felt like throwbacks to the 1980s, JBL doing the Million Dollar Man gimmick and Eugene being pretty similar to George "The Animal" Steele. Everyone was pissed because Eugene played a "mentally challenged" character but to me he was no different than George Steele, Kamala, The Missing Link, Sika and many others who have portrayed less than mentally efficient characters in the past.

I could never stand Rowdy Roddy Piper. Two things: I got into wrestling in 1992 and loved Bret Hart. So Mania 8 probably has a big bearing on this. Main reason though I think is being from Scotland and being like "You're not Scottish you cunt. Stop being a cunt"

Yup, I used to lurk here at the time and vividly remember people going ape shit over JBL getting the title match against Eddie Guerrero, talking about how shitty numbers it would draw (and it probably did)..

I even remember some interview with JBL where he blasted fans that didn't approve of his title push.

Triple H's DX, hated it. I liked the theme but that's about it. Come to think of it, I think I might hate Triple H and Shawn Michaels 40 year old men acting like teenagers DX the worst.

I did however like the original HBK, HHH, Chyna, and Rick Rude DX.

Doesnt that book with the 'Midnight Wrestling Man' Story in Genesis also have a nice quotation around 1Cor 4:4 -5 about not judging anything before the appropriate time?

Besides, Jesus equates us with God just fine at cross. So does Paul.

I kind of just thought it happened because he was a true heavyweight guy- a good dependable hand in the company for a long time, that finally got rewarded, plus he's Vince's type, personality wise, and it all coincided with him getting national news exposure for his real-life investment acumen.

Therefore give him a Dibiase-like rich/privileged guy gimmick (probably the 2nd most tried and true heel gimmick, behind the America hating foreigner), and let him get the heat and ride it to the moon. (and build a face to finally topple him, cough Cena).

Haha see I absolutely loved Gangrel. Everything from the theme music, to the titan tron, to the blood spraying, the blood baths. I really wish they pushed him more. He had a fantastic match with X-Pac at a Royal Rumble but that's about as high as he got.

Didn't like Gangrel, didn't like the Brood, Mordecai or Kevin Thorn, I pretty much dislike anything remotely "super natural", didn't even like The Undertaker when he debuted. I'll put Mordecai, Glacier and Wrath in this category as well. The Gangrel/Brood theme was ace though.

The DX of 2006 was terrible as well. Currently I'm not digging Enzo and Cass. Their Schtick has lasted a lot longer than I expected back in the NXT days though.

It honestly took me until KOTR 1998 to really become a fan of Undertaker. I appreciated his work with the likes of Diesel, Shawn, Bret but I was rooting for those guys to beat Undertaker.

I loved Mortis. Especially in the N64 games. I think that was one of those angles that was too good to pull off in the real world. In a video game or movie sure, especially if you dug Mortal Kombat. They all 4 looked cool (Even Ernest Miller) but yeah it was an angle done in a company and a time that just wasn't capable of pulling it off properly. I remember hearing Kanyon doing a dark match as Mortis for the WWE, probably back in 2003-2004. Mortis v. Undertaker or Crow Sting was always a dream match for me.

I think Enzo should be in the CW division after this tag thing runs it's course. I just fear that Big Cass will wind up like Billy Gunn. Failed singles runs, successful tag runs. Billy was alright as a singles guy but he for sure thrived in tag-teams. I'll admit I actually didn't care for these guys when I saw them in NXT for the first time but the act warmed up on me.

I never really was a fan of the Undertaker, didn't dislike him like I did at first though. Remember, when I watched his debut in 1990 it was still a couple of years before all those mid 90's whacky gimmicks (Giant Gonzalez, Spark Plugg Holly, TL Hopper, Doink, Max Moon, Repo Man, The Goon, Mantaur, MVP and so on..) and here comes this dude we're supposed to think is some kind of zombie from the old wild west or whatever, no thanks.

Got to disagree there. Billy was the shits. Even Benoit wasn't able to drag a decent match out of him.

He was fine in a tag team, taking that hot tag and cleaning house.

Yeah, they would work as a duo if they were booked as somewhat strong/successful tandem. But its incredibly lopsided. Usually its "Cass dominates early, Enzo comes in, gets slapped around for 10 mins, eventually manages a hot tag, Cass mops floor with other team, tags Enzo who promptly gets isolated and pinned. Why the hell would Cass keep tagging with this dork? Especially if he cared about his career at all. A ditching (and possible beatdown) of Enzo would be well justified in my book, but I know that would be a backstabbing heel turn in WWE world.

When I say a wrestler is alright, I just mean the guy could get the job done lol. Even Nia Jax is alright, she's not botching bell to bell and neither did Billy Gunn. He had quite a few solid matches back in the Attitude Era against Shamrock, The Rock, Goldust, even that one match where I think it was him and Chyna v. X-Pac and Road Dogg. I wouldn't put him in a top 100 in terms of singles competition.

Idk if this is strictly WWF/E but speaking of Billy Gunn...I think I may have been one of the few fans who liked him in TNA when he was part of The Beautiful People.

You basically just described most babyface tag-teams including the Rock N Roll Express where Ricky would bump the fuck out of himself for the entire match then Robert would run in and do the hot tag bit. Seriously this is like babyface tag-team wrestling 101 that every single team seems to do. The Outsiders were so predictable as well. Always started with Hall. Nash would get the "hot tag", usually get the W after Hall took a beating lol.

He is a CW/jobber at best. Cass has potential as a singles guy, but isn't there yet. Needs some more power moves to match that big man look- slams, powerbombs, something. Also needs work on psycholoigy/chain wresling to pad those matches out, outside of just doing your hot tag sequence. Has to have some offense outside of Boot! Boot! Fallaway Slam, Boot!, Empire elbow, Boot! Finisher.

most guys usually only have 4-5 signature moves. he has the boot, fallaway slam, elbow, stinger splash, and his finisher.

Nobody but maybe Aries and Kendrick can spit fire on the mic like Enzo. Enzo's one of the best talkers period in my opinion the company has today. It wouldn't hurt the CW division to have someone with the fanbase of Enzo because right now, does anyone really give a fuck about the division outside of maybe 4 people out of 15? There's no way Enzo would be booked as a jobber. I actually see Enzo winning singles gold before Big Cass.

Nash would get the "hot tag", usually get the W after Hall took a beating lol.
Yeah, I get hot tags, but at least Hall and Nash were both formidable guys. Enzo is literally completely useless. When Cass opts to tag out, its the equivalent of the Patriots taking Tom Brady out of the game to put in his 11 year old nephew to play QB, just because they felt like probably losing their game for shits and giggles.

    LMAO

I'll say this, I pretty much knew who out of Nash and Hall were going to take the pin and it was NEVER my boy Nash. Seriously, every match they lost, Hall was the one who took the pin. But the flip is that Hall was a top singles guy before being a tag and worked singles matches alot as well. Enzo doesn't. That might help Enzo more if he got some wins over other wrestlers on his own but they just rarely ever put him in singles matches. No real need. They're a solid team who compliment each other and I'm not worried about them in the future as singles guys because the only thing that makes Cass stand out is his size and Enzo sticks out because of his look and mic work. neither guy is winning me over with wrestling ability.

Man, Brian M.. He was a raving lunatic John Cena fan when I joined here, attacked anyone that didn't like John Cena like a rabid dog.. He chilled out quite a bit over time though. If you ever mentioned Cena no matter in which forum he popped right up there. I still remember talking in the TNA thread about Abyss throwing better (or less crap) punches than Cena, and voila, there he was to protect and defend.

I was 13 years old during the peak of Godfather, a young, horny boy, and even I found him to be unbearable.

I preferred muting the TV and just looking at Trish.

    I kid...

    But seriously, Godfather was terrible.

The only thing I liked about Godfather was him talking about weed. Other than that...yeah he was good for the time I guess but not on my top 54450.

That was Tainted Eclipse. He'll probably stick to his guns if he sees this, too.

Hey, everyone has their opinion. I'm sure Mae Young would share the same opinion of Sexual Chocolate.

I asked and Brian M. said he meant HBK vs. JBL at that point in time, not as a whole. He thought HBK got lazy in the mid-2000s.

That is still crazy. JBL was never better than HBK. And I remember around that time HBK having some great matches. During that time I believe he had WM matches against Jericho, the Triple Threat and then the Angle match. All three were probably some of the better matches of that time period.

HBK on his worst day is still 1,000x better than JBL on his best. I never liked that Brian dude anyway because I know for a fact this is him:

Pretty much everyone likes, or at least respects Cena these days so it's probably not as fun for him anymore.

Probably a reason someone who thought HBK during that time frame was anything but a top worker in the business. Seriously....If that was HBK being lazy what the fuck was everyone else then? Dead? lol.

Dean Ambrose. "Lunatic Fringe" ... I get it "he's got messy hair and a leather jacket so he's crazy"... he's very boring to watch imo and nothing he does comes off as lunatic level crazy to me so it just doesn't fit.

slick up his hair and he would have made a excellent "Grease: the musical'" stable with Deuce and Domino though.

Look I'm not going to defend opinions I had when I was 19 years old. But anyway, hey. I still love John Cena FYI.

All of that. I just do not connect with him in the slightest and don't buy into his character at all. As I've said elsewhere, I think he might have a lot of untapped potential if he turned heel and I might actually turn around on him if that happens but until then, he's one of my least favorite people on the roster. Least convincing lunatic I've ever seen. If his thing were just anarchy and mayhem, more of a loose cannon than a crazy person, I might have less of a disconnect with his act.
