Focusing so much on the military had the effect of making this feel extremely generic, and you have a lot of screentime with interchangable people delivering worn cliches, meaningless administrative dialogue and intentionally emotionless behaviour. Then you have the MUTAs and Godzilla as sort of motivationless heels and faces.

Just, everything's too big and widescale. Endless shots of helicopters landing and taking off and flying. Really missed a convincing emotional human core, and also not much of a meaningful allegory. Also, just not enough fun.

I much, much preferred Pacific Rim and Edge of Tomorrow as recent monster movies.

Yeah, I don't know how anyone could prefer this over Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim completely embraced the fact that it was a B movie and went all-out wacky with some visceral action. Man of Steel is my benchmark for recent blockbusters that suffered because they took themselves too seriously, and unfortunately Godzilla leaned towards that direction. A sequel could be better, but they really need to sort out the human story next time around and also put Godzilla front and centre.

Godzilla was Mother Nature personified and the MUTOs wanted to fuck and create more MUTOs. Godzilla didn't want them disturbing his peace. Not exactly the most outstanding of motivations, but they are lumbering beasts.

You make a lot of good points here, but I still had a blast seeing this on the big screen.

Also, I understand people wanting a giant monster movie to embrace its "B movie-ness", but I think it's just as appropriate for films of that ilk to go for a dead serious approach. The concept of humongous unstoppable creatures doing whatever they please is just as terrifying as it is outlandish.

I guess I need to see Edge of Tomorrow.

Yeah, I wouldn't say it had to be fun, but a bit of fun would have made up for the other deficiencies. I feel like we know the military effort is futile so why spend so long focusing on it? Fetishistically staring at US military hardware in a film that's not about that and has nothing to say but barked orders. I think the slightly ropey Speilberg version of War of the Worlds understood this. At some point there's thosands of people dead anyway so it's ultimately already lost for them - but an individual's perspective is then even more important. Some of Cranston's dialogue was really clunky, but still, why remove the one character who has meaningful emotional stakes in the whole thing?

I mean, it's not bad, it stands accused of being dumb when it's a film about big monsters, but it's just disappointing that they were so workmanlike about it.

Edge of Tomorrow slash Live Die Repeat really surprised me. I started to think I was just getting completely bored with action movies and it entertained me from start to finish.

Apparently Godzilla vs. King Kong is pretty much a lock. I'm sure a lot of people will be cynical about this being a cash grab, but I fucking love Godzilla, so I'll be there with bells on.

Of course it's a cash grab. That doesn't make it any less fucking Godzilla vs. fucking King Kong. So yes, assuming the trailers don't shit the bed, with fucking bells on.

I'm assuming Kong gets super-sized some way or another. Otherwise, Godzilla could just step on him before fucking off back into the ocean.

Nuclear fubbery would come off kind of lame, but he only has to get big enough for a Neville/Reigns-like showdown. Kong's a smart agile super ape after that. But I'm not sure how you make a smart agile super ape a little more of those things without some fubbery.

Kong might just get bigger over time. By present day he could be big enough to take on Godzilla. I'm fairly sure that the movie will end with both of them teaming up to take on a common foe. No one wants to see either of the title characters kill the other.

As a long-time Kong fan, I'm intrigued by this information. I'd be interested to see a more agile Kong fighting a powerhouse Godzilla rather than as two firm-footed behemoths just slugging it out. As mentioned, making it like Neville versus Reigns (rather than Kane versus Taker), with Kong leaping from building to building, fighting like Beast from X-men, could make for a pretty killer fight.

    Rabid Kong.

People might even understand if Godzilla had to put down Rabid Kong.

I'm a lifelong Godzilla fan, so I wouldn't be too heartbroken if he had to pimp slap Kong back to Skull Island.

I like the "rabid Kong" idea. He'd still need to gain some size, though. I'm thinking Rey Mysterio vs. Brock Lesnar in terms of size difference.

I don't see why they need to specifically address a size difference. Just introduce Kong as big enough to challenge Godzilla. Done.

It's only an issue because a new set of King Kong movies is being made. We have no idea of knowing how big he'll be, but Kong is typically much smaller than Godzilla. Of course, when the original King Kong vs. Godzilla was made, they just said fuck it and made them the same size without bothering to explain it.

Eh I get the desire to have the size difference explained, but it's a giant monster movie. Ultimately, I just want to see those big bastards beat the shit out of each other.

Also, I hope Peter Jackson is in no way involved with another Kong movie. That guy sucks.

But when studios get lazy in explaining things then we're all of a sudden in the aforementioned cash grab territory. Which stinks and sets back any chance to get a decent version of what we're anticipating here.

I don't want just monster porn, I want a badass monster movie.

It's a summer blockbuster movie. The whole point of summer blockbusters is a cash grab. There's no reason they can't both have it be a cash grab AND a badass monster movie. The first Avengers was a cash grab AND a badass superhero movie.

Holy shit, why was Peter Jackson's King Kong so long? I swear, it felt like a quarter of the movie consisted of Kong and Naomi Watts looking at each other. We get that they have a special connection, now cut the shit. I thought that movie had some great action scenes, though. Kong fighting the two T-Rex was excellent.

I really hope these movies nail King Ghidorah. He should be presented like Cthulu. Just go bat shit and and give him a cult of fanatical followers.

Because Peter Jackson is a bad director. He's overrated by LOTR fans.

The only movie of his I think is even watchable all the way through is Dead Alive.

He's not a bad director; a bad director wouldn't have been able to pull off that Kong/T. Rex sequence. Jackson is just self indulgent and he doesn't know when to reign himself in.

I said as much earlier. But badass shouldn't have to settle for lazy inconsequential storytelling. Into the Storm made money, and it looked cool, but it was a shit movie. I'd prefer if this weren't a shit movie.

I don't think there's any reason to think it will be lazy storytelling, though. While it certainly had its issues, that latest Godzilla movie had far better storytelling than I expected from it. I have faith that they'll do Kong vs Godzilla justice.

Kong vs Godzilla? Already? I woulda saved it for a third film, where someone genetically engineers Kong for the purpose of fighting off Godzilla, whom they perceive to be a threat.

Film 2 shoulda been Zilla vs the Sea Monster. Sea Monster is so underrated. MON THE SEA MONSTER.

This is a 3rd film. According to what I read, production on Kong vs Godzilla starts after Godzilla 2 and the first Kong release.

Dead Alive is one of the most ridiculous films I've ever seen and I love it for that.

The LOTR films were fine except for him fucking everything up. The Hobbit films are a disaster.

New trailer is up with plenty of teases of the new monsters. Can't wait to see Ghidorah in all its glory.

    "Long live the king"

yea that was a good trailer. I was a bit confused by the Vera Farmiga voice over but it was definitely intriguing, and the visuals looked great. Millie Bobby Brown and Charles Dance... fuck yes.

That trailer ruled. I'm guessing Vera Farmiga and Charles Dance are villains.

Never really got into these movies growing up or even the newer versions. But this does look pretty fucking incredible.

I just hope they don't try to make Godzilla some Free Willy type character in this. Some friendly beast who shows compassion. Naw, beat that ass you crazy bitch (Godzilla is a female, correct?)

I didn't watch the previous Godzilla flick since I heard that Godzilla's only in it for about ten minutes but this one looks like it'll be chock full of monster action, more like Kong: Skull Island, so it should be pretty fun. I'm interested.

And then the sequel to this one is also the sequel to Skull Island. This Godzilla fights that Kong.

Ah ok. For some reason I thought there was a movie where Godzilla had a baby but that doesn't mean much when you're Godzilla.

Yeah, Zilly adopts one in Son of Godzilla, and there are eggs in the shitty 90s one, but the son wasn't Godzo's, and the eggs were apparently asexual reproduction and that shit aint canon.

Godzilla is generally referred to with gender-neutral pronouns in the Japanese films, while "he" is more common in the English dubbed versions. The phrase "King of the Monsters" denotes a male gender. I think it's one of those things that's open to interpretation

I was satisfied with the amount of Godzilla in the 2014 film. People seem to forget that most Godzilla movies don't have it appearing in every other scene.

I don't really care all that much about Godzilla's gender. I usually refer to it as a he, but that's force of habit. It's like calling Frankenstein's monster just Frankenstein; it's ingrained in a lot of people's minds at this point.

Hyped but disappointed. This would have been a big screen movie for me. Living room will do but this would have been better in a theater.

No. Had Regal Cinemas but they are all closed last I knew. I'm still sitting on about $75 of Regal gift cards that had been saving for Ghostbusters for last year but then everything started shutting down.

No local theaters unfortunately. When I was a teenager we used to have a discount theater. You'd have to wait a extra 2-3 weeks because they wouldn't get releases right away. Tickets would be a dollar or two. We used to see tons of movies there but they closed eventually.

Glad HBO got new release movies at least. Helps me justify the cost with my wife. Just stinks. I've gone to theaters forever. Definitely something I miss. Nothing replicates that theater butter popcorn either.

Even without the virus we probably wouldn’t have gone. Babysitters are expensive. But HBOMAX also has Sesame Street so at least I can use that as an excuse to get it.

Missing theater butter is a bummer but being able to pause a movie is great.

Haven't watched either of the new Godzilla flicks but did see Skull Island (it was fun enough). But I'll probably give this a watch at some point though I don't know if I'll be dialing up HBO Max ('cuz I'd have to get Crave and then the HBO Max add on) just to watch it (and Mortal Kombat) but maybe...I believe the movie theater here is open so I possibly see it there though I'll admit I'm a little leery about going to a theater (why I haven't seen WW84 yet).

Yes, little man demands Sesame Street. Was a pleasant surprise when we got it.

Very true but I loved theater butter. That and Skittles and I'd eat myself sick sometimes.

Try butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and a sprinkle of salt. Garlic bread popcorn.

Skull Island was fantastic. What a fun film.

The new Gv.K trailer makes me feel like I can run through a brick wall. Sheesh.

I liked it. Im not familiar with the lore beyond the basics. Had no expectations. I also liked Kong: Skull Island a lot. This was not as good as KSI.

Finished it last night. Enjoyable, cheesy monster movie. Nothing to not like about it.

I enjoyed this. Easily the best of the MonsterVerse to date.

They actually let you see the fights for a change. There’s some nice choreography in terms of Kong leaping from buildings and dodging the atomic breath. The monsters get proper battle damage this time. And it’s more brutal with heads being driven into buildings rather than the usual slow-mo charges.

Having different groups of humans doing their own thing helped to keep it from slowing down too much. Though I got a bit of a Transformers vibe from Millie’s story in terms of zany characters. They need to find something in between that and the uber-serious tone of King of the Monsters. The first Pacific Rim pulled that off nicely and it still hasnt been matched in terms of the visceral impact of the fights.

    Just got done

The plot to get godzilla to be the heel was fucking stupid considering where they went later on in the movie a couple of different times

They did a nice job building sympathy for Kong which was a plus for me as I've always hated Kong and been team zilla since I was a kid but I liked it.

Fucking Hong Kong. Their population had to been decreased by 25 to 30%

Mecha Godzilla was dumb. Idea of it was fine would have been better if it didn't just mysteriously become self aware. I get what they were going for and it had to be done for the storyline they played out but hurt the overall story for me.

The two human sub plots were fine. Dude from true blood and his crew was the better storyline while mbb's crew struggled. A
AGain, it was just stuff a bit to far fetched. Cant some of these kids be in college ffs? Still, clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose

Biggest disappointment is they ran through almost all the classic monsters in 10 seconds. I'm guessing if they continue the series then it will be new monsters.

    Last but not least

Overall I enjoyed it. Go into it to see two of the king titans of monsters doing battle and you will have fun. Start second guessing things and you are not gonna enjoy yourself as much.

The film, of course, is spectacular, but to be honest, it is already a little annoying to suck the plot out of your finger. It's like with "Resident Evil" - the first 3 films were cool, everything else is already strange and I don't really understand the point in creating them.

Why do you feel like the plot was sucked out of your finger?

It's a lot of fun. The movie knows its lane and stays in it.

I think so, because the plot has already outlived its usefulness and the directors come up with the maximum nonsense in order to earn extra money on the wave of the popularity of the franchise. I think it's important to stop on time.

Can we stop on time....If time is never time at all? Kong can never leave, without leaving a peace of youth. And godzilla forever changed. He can never be the same.

so i kinda absolutely love the idea of these movies, so i get excited about them. godzilla 2014 was a slog until godzilla showed up and started wrecking shit. i missed out on kong skull island and king of the monsters, for whatever reasons, but with godzilla vs kong available at home, i figured i'd finally catch up; and wooo boy, are they something. i really do just hate the human aspect of these films. they always feel the need to overcomplicate the plot and their involvement, with king of the monsters being insanely guilty of this. like, i don't expect amazing writing and characters, but that is just more a point for not putting so much focus on them. the only characters i gave a shit about through both films were john c. riley, bradley whitford and ken wanatabe, which were two comedic reliefs and a barebones 'peace and trust in nature' scientist. i get these are supposed to be turn off your brain kinda films, but their odd focus on constantly cutting back to the human elements to blurt out more plot points or move things to the next big explosion make that very hard for me to do.

with that said, my excitement for godzilla vs kong is way lower than it was two days ago, but i guess we'll see how it goes.
