Yeah it's fitting. I love it when players can retire in the proper uniform. Pujols is a cardinal. Always and forever.

Well, the punch in the that was hearing the DeGrom news is starting to fade after two daze....

Truth is, after five injuries last year with no resolution as to cause, I was saying this was a likely outcome all fall, winter and spring, and will continue until both parties come clean as to what is really going on with DeGroms health, like

    1. Did he have a partial tear to the elbow ligament as Alderson said and DeGrom denied this winter?
    2. Can DeGrom ever pitch again without some sort of major reconstructive arm or shoulder surgery?

...and all we get is the usual bs about him opting out of a 30 million dollar a year contract when it will be an entire year out by the time he returns, only to break down again 1-2-3 starts later.

    Welcome to Mets hell.

Manaea traded to the Padres. A’s win total keeps projecting downward.

Have to imagine deGrom won't be opting out at the end of the season now that he's slated to miss the first month.

And if you believe deGrom is only going to miss a month you're a fool. Dude won't pitch before the All-Star break guaranteed.

As a fan I love watching him pitch when he's healthy but that qualifier is happening less and less frequently. I hate to say it but I hope they don't make him an extension offer until he proves he can go a whole season without getting hurt. And even then I'd do maybe a three year deal. At least they'll insure the contract so when he inevitably misses months at a time they're not on the hook for paying him.

I hope deGrom bounces back but once this kind of thing becomes routine then you have to assume the worst.

Mike Soroka is a similar issue. 2 years ago most people would've told you he was the future of the Braves rotation but when you keep tearing the same muscle in the same part of your body multiple times it becomes less and less likely that you're going to be able to pitch full seasons ever again. The Braves don't even mention Soroka's name now even though he's due back from his most recent surgery sooner rather than later.

You just can't count on pitchers once they become prone to injury. It's sad but incredibly true.

Mike Hampton would be another case. The Braves signed him to that massive deal way back in the day and every season he would come and start a game or two and then his arm would fall off and he'd have it surgically reattached, rinse and repeat.

When Mike Hampton left the Mets in 2001 to go to the vaunted Colorado school system, the Mets were awarded a compensatory pick which they used on David Wright.

    It's back baby.

I suggested last year we predict our divisions and I'm doing that again this year.

    Braves - 96 wins
    Mets - 91
    Philly - 80
    Nats - 78
    Marlins - 72

Braves become the 1st team to repeat since the fucking Yankees.

I don't know that this is news but I thought some of the stuff in today's ESPN article was interesting, in regard to pitch clocks and PitchCom:

The average nine-inning game in 2021 lasted a record 3 hours, 10 minutes -- up three minutes from 2020, 15 minutes from 2011 and 31 minutes from 1984, the last season that average lasted less than 2 hours, 40 minutes. Studies have shown that additional time between pitches is the primary factor in the increased length of games.

Pitch clocks have been used in the minor leagues for several years. Starting in June 2021, baseball experimented with a 15-second clock in the low-Class A West League with nobody on base and 17 seconds with runners on. Prior to the 15-second clock, the average game in the West League lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes; after the clock, it lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes.
This sounds good to me. Speed up the game and get the pace back to where it was in the 80s and prior.

Manfred said he believes the new PitchCom device approved for 2022 will also help speed up the game. Using a pad with buttons on the wrist of his gloved hand, the catcher can signal the type of pitch and location to the pitcher through a listening device. The technology is an anti-sign-stealing device, but "it also has a pace-of-game effect," Manfred said. "We think PitchCom is going to improve our product on the field this year."
This also sounds good. While the catcher throwing down his fingers for the sign is a classic part of baseball, let's get with the times and do away with sign stealing scandals. It'll be cool seeing how this works this year. Of course I can't wait for some team to hack the PitchCom of their opponent, lol.

Big fan of heads up, smart baseball plays that tend to fly under the radar but can have a huge impact on a game. One happened yesterday during the Mets game. They'd had a runner tag up and score but the Dbacks thought the runner left third early. When the pitcher stepped off the rubber to appeal the play at third, the Mets runner at first took off for second in an attempt to give himself up. The pitcher panicked and ran towards second base but threw to third AFTER the runner slid into second. Since the runner taking second had just become the previous play, the play at third was no longer appealable.

Buck Showalter said it was the kind of thing they'd worked on in spring training. Really smart play that saved a run from being erased.

While I was on vacation, this brought back memories of when I was younger.

Aaron Judge HR lifts Yanks to 11th straight win (mlb.com)

Cool moment that baseball needs more of. Classy of the Toronto fan to give the kid the Judge HR ball.

I don't panic about 500 baseball in April and I don't really in May either.

But the Bravos need to start scoring runs consistently. Hopefully as Acuna continues to heal up things get a little better but Ozuna has to start hitting his weight. Same for Swanson and Duvall.

With a combination of timely hitting and solid pitching, both starters and a great bullpen, despite the lockout and a late start to the season to the point I considered giving up baseball, the Yankees have gotten off to their best start in my lifetime.

Baseball has a long long season, and I don't expect them to keep up this pace at 28-9. But this has been fun so far.

Braves won again today. That's TWO in a ROW. According to Lou Brown if we win again tomorrow that's called a winning streak and it apparently has happened before.

3 teams in MLB have not won 3 games in a row this season. The Pirates, the Nationals and your defending world champion Atlanta Braves.

Does Soto get traded this season, and if so, where does he go?

I think he does get traded but it’s not until the the day of the deadline. From what I’ve read the Nats are not negotiating. They give their price of 4-5 top prospects or young, controllable players and if the other team says no, the Nats hang up.

I think he ends up in LA. The Yankees don’t necessarily need him as they have Judge they’ll most likely re-sign in the winter. I don’t think the Mets want to part with their three top prospects - one of which is the #1 or #2 prospect in MLB - to get him, unless there’s a handshake deal in place for the extension before they agree to the trade.

I just know Soto ain't going to the Braves. Hope he goes to the AL.

Watching Mets fans on Twitter while the Braves play 700 ball since June has been the best thing all summer.

    Braves be like

Atlanta dangles the (sort of) big money carrot in front of another young player years from free agency and again, he bit. Proving again that when you ask a 25 year old if he wants 20 million a year today or 30 million a year in a few seasons he will almost always take the 20.

Anyway Austin Riley (you haven't heard of him but he's breaking Hank Aaron records) just signed a 10 year 212 million dollar deal that will lock him up all the way through his prime.

Last season he hit 33 home runs with a .303/.367/.531 line. So far this season he's at 29 home runs with a .301/.360/.604 line.

His defense is ok. But the big fucker can HIT and most importantly, he walks out to Stone Colds glass breaking before every at bat. So you know...points there.

Anyway Boston. Devers is about to cost you.

Not bummed in the slightest that the Mets didn't give up what the Nats were supposedly asking for in return. The top prospect in baseball PLUS another 3-4 prospects? Hard pass on that.

    Well deGrom really is back.

The Mets scored one run for him.

Was just listening to his call of Hank Aarons 715th homerun. My dad was such a fan of Vin Scully. But man what a LIFE he had.

Count me in as a huge Vin Scully fan. Quite possibly the best baseball broadcaster of all time.

Saturday night my Yankee fan BIL came over and he was not happy about the state of his team right now. Got reeeeeeeaeaaaaaaallllly salty when I pointed out if the Mets won and Yanks lost they'd have the same record.

You should try to make it to Cooperstown in five years when Pujols and Yadi are first ballot HOFers. I've always wanted to see someone get inducted in person.

Lol Mets got lucky. Braves got fucking buzz sawed.

Pitching had to be perfect when guys aren't hitting and it wasn't. We played goofy defense as well. The bullpen played well but that's it. The Braves lost that series all on their own and didn't need any help from umps or any other crazy bullshit people are saying.

It's time to play better. Because the Phillies are way closer to the Braves than the Braves are to the Mets.

Having said that though, we will. It was one series and it sucked ass but it's time to put on the big boy pants and win the winnable games and just pray to God that your Mets start Metsing like they tend to do sometimes.

Why did the Orioles have to become a competent team?

This whole back half of the season was supposed to be chill for the Jays with something like 18 games against them. Disappointed.

I was a little surprised by that. They mentioned that since interleague play started that this was only like the 5th time or something that a NL team swept them in a 3 game series.

Man, if I’m in the Padres organization or just a fan of theirs, I’d be livid right now. They traded the farm for Soto and then this idiot takes himself out of the playoff push AND the actual playoffs.

I mean they're not really Metsing, both teams are playing at a very high level right now.

In any other division except the NL West the Braves would be in first place. Definitely the only exciting division race at this point in the season. Braves have a tougher September schedule and I'd hate to see them in the playoffs. I think whoever doesn't win the division has to play the Dodgers in the first round, so that sucks.

Both teams are playing well yeah but Atlanta HAD to play well this past week or any shot at the division was over. Taking 3 of 4 from the Mets then 2 of 3 from the Astros was crucial.

Both of our schedules are easy as fuck the rest of the way and then I believe we end the season with a 3 game series against each other.

Should be fun the whole way.

The rule changes we already knew about were made official today, for 2023. There will be a pitch timer and no more shifts, and bigger bases. I for one am a big fan of these changes.

Stolen bases will get very interesting because pitchers can only attempt a pick-off or step off the mound twice. If they try a pick off a third time, they must either successfully pick the runner off, or get charged with a balk.

I am meh on most of it. I am sure they are fine and it will be fine and no big deal but at the same time I was pretty much fine with the things the way their were. I get the logic behind the changes though.

I like the pitch clock and bigger bases, as well as the rules about throwing over during attempted pickoffs. Anything that increases stolen bases is good in my opinion.

As far as the shift goes, I understand that all four INFs need to have their toes in the dirt at the start of the pitch but does that mean the left fielder could come over to play short right field if they wanted to?

Outfielders are still free to line up anywhere, it would seem.

So it's not as if shifts will cease to exist, they will just be restricted. You can put your shortstop almost directly behind second base and move your third baseman to shortstop. Then you can have an outfielder play short right, as you said, or even play the infield.

Shifts will still be used as frequently as they are today, I would guess. Lefties are still gonna get a shift used against them, just not as effectively.

Yeah that makes sense. And if they really wanted to get into it, it seems it would be possible to have your SS break into a run towards shallow right as soon as the pitch mechanic is started.

I know it's an impossibly preposterous idea, but I'd like a rule to somehow devalue the homerun. Manufacturing runs is a far more enjoyable part of the game to watch.

I never understood why guys don't simply bunt for a base hit against the shift. If the other team is giving you the whole other side of the field, then take it.

But chicks dig the long ball....

I get what you are saying though. Nice to see people get hits and move people around the bases and possible stolen bases and all of that.

And my wife didn't say yes but she didn't say no to me going to the game next week to see history made with Yadi and Waino. Just trying to get our house ready for an appraisal so not a lot of free time right now. Going to get as much done as I can this weekend though so I can go and see if the kids want to go with me. Not big baseball fans but they would probably go for this.

Bunting ain't easy and guys don't practice that shit at all anymore. Particularly the guys most often shifted against are the least likely to spend time working on how to effectively lay one down.

Analytics say all or nothing so try and launch it over the shift rather than work around it.

I don't personally agree with all of that methodology but it is what it is.

Getting rid of the shift is the best thing here. It's a case of analytics hurting the game instead of helping it. Baseball needs more offense and fun. Not more efficient defense.

I also like the bigger bases. I don't understand the how and why exactly but they've been using them in the minors for a while and apparently there have been significantly fewer injuries from players sliding in head first since the change.

The pitch clock doesn't matter to me because I don't really care about the game being faster but I do think it will help the games popularity with young people and that is quite important.

Straw poll: where is everyone at with AL MVP? For me, in looking at the raw stats, Ohtani is the guy. It is simply amazing to have a guy give you 150+ innings of 2.55 ERA and 500+ at bats of .890 OPS. Judge and Ohtani both have exactly 509 at bats right now, and obviously Judge is a much better batter, but the difference doesn't account for the pitching contributions of Ohtani.

The one thing in Judge's favor is that his team is a playoff team and the Angels aren't. Every year it kills me that the Angels don't go to the playoffs with Trout and Ohtani, but what can you do.

I predict Judge will win MVP as he approaches 60 home runs on a division winner.

But my personal vote would go to Ohtani. What he's doing is simply too remarkable and unique. He deserves back to back MVPs. And that's too bad for Judge since he's clearly having an MVP worthy season, but he'll get his flowers by way of an insane contract this offseason.

I'd go with Judge, since he has carried the team on his back for the last 3 months.

I see the argument for Ohtani, but the only time a player from a non-playoff team should win an MVP is if there is not a clear deserving candidate from a first place team.

Aaron Judge might win the Triple Crown while hitting over 60 home runs and lets be honest breaking the real record. Not to mention he is built like a linebacker yet still plays a great center field.

I don't get the argument for Ohtani at all unless the idea is because he hits and pitches he should be MVP every year he plays since no one else does that.

After making my post I did learn that Judge is by far the MVP favorite so this isn't the debate I thought it would be, but in any event...

He does both of those things very well, not like he just pitches and hits at an average level. I guess the way I look at it is, if you are starting a team for 1 year and you have to win or die, do you draft the triple crown winner or do you choose a guy who will hit 40 home runs with a .900 OPS who comes packaged with a guy who will pitch 160 innings with a 2.55 ERA? Which is more valuable to your team?

Judge has a WAR of 9.0 to Ohtani's 8.1 for what that's worth.

In his free agent year. Has a "bet on yourself by turning down a big contract in a free agent year" bet ever paid off like this one?

Judge has hit no 61. Ties the record. All Rise.

Same night as Gerritt Cole tied Ron Guidry's mark of 248 strikeouts in a season. I find that amazing, since, as I recall, in Guidry's phenomenal 25-3 season in 1978, they mostly used a 4-man rotation. Cole is a heckuva pitcher, doing it this year with no spider tack.

Not trying to be a hater but why do we consider it “the record” when it’s only the AL record? We don’t talk about the Eastern Conference scoring record or the single season NFC touchdown leader.

A high percentage of baseball fans consider it the record simply because the only players who had hit more than 61 homers, McGuire, Sosa, and Bonds, were all cheaters. McGuire has admitted it, and the stain of steroids has certainly clouded over Bonds and Sosa.

Judge is the face of baseball, and he's clean. He deserves every accolade.

I mean there were no dug tests back then for them to fail. They cheated in as much as they cheated the fans in a sort of way but they didn't actually cheat because baseball was way behind the steroid issue.

Also the ball was juiced in the late 90s. Even skinny guys were hitting 40.

    Good for Judge though.
