He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

I was recently gifted the He-Man and the MOTU Character Guide and World Compendium hard cover book. Basically a giant MOTU encyclopedia covering all characters, worlds, animals and vehicles from all different forms like comics, toys, cartoons and the movie.

Any love for MOTU here? I don't recall ever seeing a thread on the subject but with Kevin Smith's new MOTU Netflix show on the horizon seems like its time. Mark Hamill as Skeletor should be awesome!

These were the first toys I remember having to have. I had a ton of them too.

The MOTU movie from the late 80s was the first live action movie I saw in theaters. A big group of people in my family went at night for my birthday. It felt like big time. Frank Langella as Skeletor still is as awesome now as it was on the big screen when I was five.

Frank Langella as Skeletor is still one of my favourite movie baddies. Bill Conti’s score for the film is great, especially the heroic theme when He-Man is fighting off the soldiers on the roof and when he gets his sword back at the end.

MOTU was always on when I was younger and I did watch it, but probably not as religiously as Thundercats, TMNT, The Real Ghostbusters or MASK. I had a lot of He-Man toys without realising they were from the show. The Netflix show should be interesting.

I had not heard about the Kevin Smith series. Just looked it up. I'll give it a try. A couple years ago, I watched through the original series with my daughters. they enjoyed, and we'll probably give this new one a try.

Hopefully, they choose a different animation style than She-ra.

Maybe more like the original, with lots of running animations repeated over different backgrounds.

I loved the toys. The heels could be slipped into anything too. Mutants for Turtles. Weird ghosts for Ghostbusters. Masked wrestlers for jobbing to the WWF stars.

I'd really like to see a PS game released like Marvel Ultimate Alliance style. There is such a cast of characters it really sucks this never happened.

I wasn't a fan of the She-re style either. I'll suffer through it though. The new show is supposed to be a continuation to the original cartoon so I am curious.

Another toy line that I'll never understand how my brother and I wound up with so many figures. Maybe it just seemed that way lol, but we did have quite a few. Had both castles, Skeletor's with the weird voice changing thing that came with it was twisted as fuck. And the figures had a smell I still remember to this day that no other figures had.

Thank God the movie flopped because it made it possible for the company to lose faith in part 2 which wound up in a weird way turning into the Jean-Claude van Damme movie CYBORG (Costumes and I think some of the "sets" were made for MOTU 2)

Snake Mountain was amazing. My mind was blown by the snakemic/voicehanger. Although looking back, I'm pretty sure that I was doing most of the voice-changing and was happy to give the credit to Skeletor's hideout. Kinda like people playing along with hypnotist.

I was missing only four figures from the original run. Unfortunately, it was Man of Arms, Beast Man, Merman and Stratos. Like the four best ones. I got Greyskull, He-man, Trap Jaw and Skeletor for Christmas one year. Probably the best Christmas ever. My parents got rid of all it for pennies at yard sales. Snake Mountain, the Vehicles, Battle Cat, Panthero. All of it gone for like 5 bucks. It's the one you line I refuse to get due the hundreds of dollars I would need to spend and the zero room I have.

I know that I watched the cartoon as a kid and played with this girl at my babysitter's house and I'd pretend to be He-Man and she'd be She-Ra. I had Merman as a kid that I think I got at a garage sale. I had Beast-Man about 5 years ago that I bought at a secondhand store. I remember my cousins having just about all the stuff when we were kids. Thus concludes my MOTU experiences.

Was a fan as a kid.

Blew my mind to realize that the TV show was based on the figures and not the other way round.

As per usual I preferred the bad guys to the good ones.

Had a fair few figures, some of my favourites where Man E Faces, Modulok and Trap Jaw.

Me and a mate I grew up with had an incident with Evil Lyn. We were playing in his front garden (as kids not recently..) and we buried Evil Lyn, as you do... was only in a small amount of soil down the side of the garden about a foot away from the wall of the house. When we went to unbury her about 10 minutes after she had disappeared.

Still to this day we have no idea what happened to her. A couple of years ago I noticed the people who live there now had replaced the garden with a patio, I was tempted to knock on the door and ask them if she turned up when they were digging but you know...bit weird.

New trailer is looking pretty good.

Mark Hamill's Skeletor cackle is awesome! Reminds me of his Joker stuff but if it works, it works.

He really is. His statement about what he's looking to do and this trailer really lead me to believe that Kevin greatly respects people's experiences with the original cartoon and toys.

Looking forward to watching this with the kids.

Yeah, the trailer got little Mav pretty excited. We watched it four times in a row.

Curious where the story will go.

I watched the entire Masters run with Lexi when she was about 5. I'm to get her excited for this. She's 13 now, so who know?

Yeah I watched them with Aubrie and Landyn when they were younger, like 5 or 6.

Aubrie is 14 now and told me how lame it looked. Landyn thought it looked good though. Teenagers are fickle.

I got confused for a second and thought this was the mafia thread.

Now that I'm dead I feel comfortable saying I don't know that much about the source material. I used to have a skeletor action figure that was pretty badass though. I'll check this out on Netflix when it comes out.

Old thread of mine but it works for the Netflix show. I'm going to try to resist watching it all on the 23rd but get the feeling I'll run right through these. Interested to see what Smith will do with this story.

Hm, I think I wasn't active on the boards when you posted this before.

I love MOTU. I got into it with the 2002 show and eventually went back and watched the original program, as well as the old movie. I even watched a fan film before that stars BRIAN CAGE as He-Man, haha.

Can not wait for the new show.

How is Masters of the Universe being released similar to The Boys?

    They both have a Herogasm.

I look forward to this show, and the eventual discussion with all of you.

I've seen very little of the 02 show but from what I've seen it looked pretty good.

I was hooked on the toys, comics, books and original cartoon. I still have a bunch of those Golden "Masters of the Universe" books from when I was little. Still in dam good condition too. Another 6 months or year those things will be getting read to Mav at bed time.

As cheesy as the old flick was I still love the hell out of it.

I watched The Power of Grayskull doc on Netflix in preparation for this. Great overview of the toys, comics, TV show and Dolph Lundgren film. I think I’ve seen more of the new adventures of He-Man than the original 80s cartoon.

Ha, that's funny. My wife gave in and is doing her art craft things.

Thankfully Mav freaked when I put it on. Literally cheered and clapped when I put it on. Little guy has sat here and watched it with me. He says "I did it" when there's a fight and someone wins. I doubt the Olympics would contain a 2 year old like this.

Voice acting is really good too.

My girls are nonstop into My Little Pony right now, which is great for me because I love this show. I do not mind watching it all again with them, lol

Wow. Twists and turns and lots of great voice acting.

I need time to process, but what a great little ride so far. Kevin Smith is good at this stuff.

any idea when we’re supposed to get more?

No idea but it's supposed to be 5 more episodes.

It's already too long a wait.

I definitely need to watch it all over again. I feel like it went so fast that there is probably plenty of little things I missed.

When Netflix splits seasons in half, it’s usually only a few months apart. My guess is part 2 will be out for Christmas.

This is really good. Felt like a proper quest with real stakes and characters nicely fleshed out. The cliffhanger in episode 5 is fantastic. Unfortunately the show is being review bombed by angry fans who didn’t get what they wanted. 94% for critics and 27% for audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

So is this really just a backdoor Teela show with very little He-Man like the internet is saying?

    Sure.

    and it’s very good.

People were expecting something like the 2002 reboot, when this is more of a continuation/finale to the 80s show.

Watching/reading reviews has made me so sad. I think people aren’t picking up the context or watching the whole story. I thought Smith did a great job creating a post-apocalyptic world and showing how important He-Man and Skeletor were to the balance of the universe. I loooove that the sword was split in 2 like the original toy line/story.

this stinks. I loved this little series and I’m headed to Walmart later to buy some of those retro figs lol

I completely agree. This was a home run. Lots of little Easter eggs for fans of the toys, comics and movie.

    It's a starting point.

But yeah, just lots of Easter eggs and like, humanizing moments… I dunno. I looooves the Evil-Lyn and Orko time together. It was so wholesome.

i love them using what’s her name from GoT for Evil-Lynn too. She was PERFECT.

mark hamill basically just did his joker and so that’s really the only thing I dislike.

I really enjoyed the weird techno-cult that Triklopa started. I want more of that.

Mer-Man with the scars and the vendetta against Skeletor was awesome. I dunno. I fucking loved it.

Lena Headey was the perfect choice for Lyn.

Hamill did his Joker voice but I think it fits. Probably why they cast him.

Tri-Klop's Cult was awesome. Loved how he had taken Snake Mountain over. I wonder if he falls back in line now that Skeletor is back.

Mer-Man all scarred up was great. I want more of that too.

Wal-Mart around here is pretty picked over. They got He-Man and Skeletor aplenty but nothing else.

I'm at maximum capacity though for toys and stuff. I need to downsize my stuff but I just don't have time. I did get the over-sized Pop figures of Skeletor and He-Man for Father's Day and the ones of them on Panthor and Battle Cat for Christmas so have some fun He-Man stuff but I wouldn't mind grabbing up some cool retro figures too.

I used to have everything! I really wish my mother didn't get rid of this stuff when I was younger.

My collection has shifted largely away from toys and mostly into model kits, which is why I haven’t gotten any of these retro guys yet. I think they’d look cool on the shelf with all my Masters Mega Construx stuff

In the context of the show, it makes sense. She was lied to for years by Adam, her father, and the queen.

when she says “the rest of us had to deal with it” it’s similar to when someone commits suicide and everyone else in their life has to deal with the fallout. Yea, Adam died, but he died because He-Man, the champion of Castle Grayskull died. Teela was ready for He-Man the soldier to die, but she never expected that her cowardly best friend would also die in battle like that.

now she has to live with everyone close to her having kept a huge secret, while also mourning a comrade in He-Man and her best friend Adam.

You have to remember, this show is a continuation of the 80s show, so Teela has been fighting alongside he-man for a long time. She’s known Adam forever. There is decades of trust broken by that one moment. It’s heart wrenching.

wvery review I’ve seen just complains about SJW and Mary Sue whatnot but no one is talking about the actual context and what’s going on. I’ve seen very few reviews be actually critical of the story, just the lack of He-Man and Skeletor.

Teela’s reaction is completely believable and the journey she goes on is the best part of the show. The caption at the bottom of that picture is a really weird way of looking at it. At that moment Adam has no idea how Eternia has fallen apart in his absence, and how betrayed Teela felt that so many knew his secret, and so he’s understandably wondering what her problem is. And she’s grappling with the fact that she doesn’t want to fill his shoes. There’s nothing outrageous about a bit of nuance to the characters and having them think and act illogically because of their emotions.

The negative reaction from some fans is hilarious. If the show was as reductive and repetitive as the original, it would be crap to watch as an adult. In just five episodes, they make you care about a whole bunch of characters, set up an entire mythology for people who are new to the franchise, throw in tons of Easter eggs and references for the die-hands and make some bold decisions. I ended up loving this show way more than expected.

I'm literally on Episode 4 again and Orko is making my arm hair stand up, again.

I completely agree, people are dwelling on things they will probably get in the 2nd half of the season. All the greatness in these first 5 episodes seems to be getting pushed under the rug.

Damn near every single person I've read crying about the show have no idea that it's a continuation. I had no idea. I was pretty big into He-Man back in the 80's but he didn't last. That Netflix show about Toys, they hit the nail on the head about the demise of He-Man, the failed attempt at making a space-themed He-Man, the movie was OK-but it falls in the Super Mario Bros movie category of "could've been much better" lol.

So I'm not living or dying but whatever this is about. If it's a continuation, cool. I'm 39 years old and don't get too wrapped up in my childhood getting raped because it's He-Man for fuck's sake. The guy was cool running half naked with that haircut? Shiiiiiit and where were the brothers? We had 1 black dude, the skunk, and the figure smelled too. Thanks!

Reminds me of the people still crying about the new Mortal Kombat movie. Now, I was one of them crying because I heard they weren't even going to have Scorpion in the movie (at least the 1st one) but still, they have no patience. With this show it just feels like more soft ass conservatives crying about something that isn't happening to a show 40 years old.

Yeah, I liked the new Mortal Kombat too. It was good for a table setting. We didn't even get the tournament yet. Obviously there will be more story that will be told. People live on phones, I don't see why people can't search MK and see that they planned three movies. Just enjoy the violent ride.

Same here. It was already announced it's just the first half.. Where's the patience?

Sure Teela's on the forefront but it makes sense in what would naturally happen next. Teela would have found out eventually. People should just enjoy seeing these characters they haven't seen in years again.

That haircut was ridiculous but maybe only made more preposterous by the outfit he wears with it.

I loved this. Great story and I really enjoyed the animation. I like how they made Adam small and He-Man big. Original cartoon did not do that and even as a kid it drove me nuts.

The people that are complaining can suck it. They just don't get the story.

    Great voice cast.

    I overall enjoyed the series.

    Still spoiler? to be safe.

I'm reminded of a story with Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers from Infinity War. Basically, Capt America was supposed to be the big battle turning reappearance (where Thor ended up coming in) in an early draft. He was largely out of the movie until then. Feige basically acknowledged that it would be cool, but still sat the Russos down and basically told them if they had an Avengers movie and they left Capt America out of most of it, that people wouldn't enjoy it as much. Particularly given how the movie was going to end.

So they found a good balance.

Feige really has been a master at balancing story with what fans want to see.

    New show dropped today!!

can’t wait to watch it this weekend. This one is kid-friendly so I’m gonna get the girls watching this one with me…if they’ll tear their eyes away from Gabby’s Dollhouse for a bit.

Looks like there's a long awaited return.

    Dam that looks awesome.

    Gave me goosebumps.

Looks like all the whining people were doing was for naught. Adam is alive and well and looks to be kicking some major ass.

Aside from the most extreme weirdos, I think everyone knew he was coming back. I enjoyed the show, but am still feeling OK about my first-reaction critiques.

Wonder how many tweaks there were agter the uproar though.

I think minimal tweaks. I have faith in Smith just setting the table in those first few episodes for a epic conclusion now.

Like you said most normal people probably could see Adam surviving the end attack by Skeletor. I can't remember what I read but Smith basically was telling people to be patient. Probably because he knew what he had on deck.

Can't wait though. Glad I didn't have to wait until next year for this.

If it was a full year wait, dude would have gotten wrecked.

When he cut the trailer, I guarantee he's mumbling under his breath, "See, here's HeMan powering up. Here he is in full gear, so nobody thinks I leave him brainless....its FINE....IT'S ALL FUCKING FINE"

High hopes for this for me. I like Smith, but he's not someone I have unconditional faith in. But when he's good, he can be very good.

Optimistic for a solid conclusion that will lead to some additional content.

He-Man was always the least interesting character. I didn't realize how many dudes were that into He-Man himself until Netflix lol. 35 years later He-Man is still giving us a boner with his HBK 2002 haircut and furry panties.

You may have overestimated the percentage whose favorite character was Orko.

Who's voice you can hear at the end of the trailer.

I figured Orko wasn't done either.

I watch Filmation He-Man all the time. It's awesome, once again the false "80s cartoons are crap now" narrative falls hard to good'n'healthy reality.

Season two of the new CG He-Man show dropped this week, as usual, it is much better than Revelation despite looking even goofier

I watch plenty of 80s stuff so I’m not peddling any narrative. I wish Hollywood dropped the obsession with nostalgia because they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t. Either the show doesn’t live up to your expectations, which can be impossibly high because you want to feel the way you did as a kid, or any attempt to add more nuance and characterisation is immediately dismissed as wokeness. The latter is what I had an issue with in some of the reactions. I get that people wanted more He-Man right away, but I enjoyed what Smith did with the other characters.

Melissa Benoist replacing Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela.

This one will be called Revolution.

And William Shatner is in the cast. Hopefully as Hordak.

I think Sarah is still doing Buffy the Werewolf Slayer on Paramount plus. I like Melissa. Shatner has to be Hordak. Mark Hamill having scenes with him is going to be amazing.

We always have to check our birth certificates and realize a lot of these shows are not 100% catering to those of us pushing 40-50 years old now lol.

But I'm positive when I was a kid in the 80's, older people were hating on GI Joe not looking the way he did in 1969 or whatever. Some people don't realize that just because it was around when you were a kid doesn't mean 30 years later it's still marketed toward your generation. Our job is to tell kids, yes, check out this show, these toys, I liked them when I was younger. Maybe leave that last part out as some kids think their parents are lame.

And hold off on the negativity. Let your kids decide, because we're old as fuck now in their eyes and we don't have a clue what's cool. Glass half full approach works a lot better than being butthurt that your childhood tv shows and toys are making a comeback.

I'll also add that I do laugh a little when people talk about nostalgia, when did He-Man ever leave?? It seems like I've always seen the toys in stores. I have a son who is 21, he had He-Man stuff when he was 5-6. Transformers, GI Joe, Ninja Turtles, all the good shit when we were kids has never went away.

If this show has William Shatner as Hordak, it's marketed to me.

    Personally.

But I will allow younger generations to believe something different.

A lot of the toys we have come and go. They will be gone for a bit and then yup they are back. My oldest had Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, no Rainbow Brite but she was around as well. I do remember seeing He-Man, Transformers, and such around as well.
