This is so insane. Like 10 of the best 20 players in the league have changed teams this season. The NBA basically had a draft for superstars this year.

    Kawhi - Clippers
    PG13 - Clippers
    Anthony Davis - Lakers
    Irving - Nets
    Durant - Nets
    Butler - Heat
    Kemba Walker - Celtics
    D'Angelo Russell - GSW
    Horford - 76ers
    CP3 - Thunder
    Westbrook - Rockets

Before the season began I only would have predicted the Kawhi to Clippers move. As the season went on of course some of these became possibilities, but even at the beginning of the playoffs the majority of these I still wouldn't have believed to be true. Only AD to the Lakers and an outside thought of Kyrie and/or Durant to the Nets.

AD to the Lakers was done as soon as he signed with Klutch in October.

Too bad CP3 and Harden got cockblocked by the Warriors all these years. They deserved to go to the Finals.
I think Darryl Morey is allergic to 1st round picks.

Wasn't sure The Basketball Tournament needed it's own thread so just wedging in here, but curious if anyone is watching and what you think?

Also of course what you think of the elam ending.

This is actually a really well put together and fun concept. Great atmosphere for non-nba or ncaa televised games. The prize money aspect and fan support bits are really neat as well.

And while I'm not at all advocating it be introduced elsewhere just yet, I think the ending is a very very intriguing idea that I've watched twice live now and both times came away feeling refreshed about the finish of competitive organized basketball games.

The tournament itself has been really fun to watch so far, imo.

It's like a hollywood version of the most organized bit of pickup hoops you could think of. The atmosphere and competition and genuine sort of grass-roots enthusiasm is really pretty hard not to like.

    Love this kinda stuff..

    2019-20 NBA annual rookie survey

So LeBron is the youngster's favorite player (what else is new) and they think Cam Reddish (note: not Zion) will have the best career.

Also interesting that Steph didn't get a single vote for their favorite player. Hard to pin down an exact reason as to why not.

G League to experiment with single foul shot

The NBA G League is experimenting this season with a new rule under which trips to the free throw line will include only a single foul shot that will be worth one, two or three points depending on the nature of the foul leading to the attempt, officials told ESPN.

It marks the latest move -- in both the G League and the NBA -- to improve game flow and reduce the length of games. Officials estimate that moving to a "one foul shot for all the points" model will shave between six and eight minutes off each G League game, said Brad Walker, head of basketball operations for the league.
It's just a g-league experiment for now, so whatever ... but I also kinda hate it right off the bat. I don't think 6 to 8 minutes is worth what sounds like could change a great deal of how the game is played, and most likely negatively. Hope basketball wins over business on this one.

It is ironic. I am 1000% opposed to the changes they talk about to speed up baseball but have no issues with this change. It is probably because I don't really care about the NBA and its history isn't nearly as important as MLBs.

I'm completely the opposite. I don't love, love baseball and so don't feel tied to it's fuddy duddy reverence for it's history. Speed it up more, please.

But I also wouldn't propose to change the count from 4 balls = a walk and 3 strikes = an out to 3 and 2 just for speed sake, which is kinda what the above experiment is doing.

    It's abject nonsense.

It's a stupid rule. It won't make it to the NBA. There's a much stronger likelihood of a four-point line happening than this happening.

I am too but in a totally different way.

No group of fans deserves the comeuppance than basketball fans is about to get. They have been so high and mighty about how great their sport is compared to everything else. Now it is their time in the mud too. Do you want to be politically active and have free speech or do they want $4B? Time to choose…

Suddenly the NCAA and NFL don't seem so bad.

Well they didn't force Morey out and supported his right to freedom of expression. So far, yes they do seem better than NCAA and NFL. Whether it will continue as they lose more money we will see.

But quite an odd thing to say "Hah we don't pay our players, and we don't care about our players getting concussed. But we haven't taken money from China so we are clearly superior."

By the by, NFL's primary broadcaster in China is Tencent and they're looking to further expand into the market as well so...

    Fuck China.

But at the same time, what a colossal fuck up by the GM. I'm all for free speech but let's face it, his tweet wouldn't have changed anything about Hong Kong. And it may have cost his organization a billion dollars. Ouch.

I highly doubt the matter is going to be insignificant towards the NBA. They're either going to survive by the skin of their teeth in terms of not losing this potential money or they're going to see a rapid depletion of funds they expected to have. All of the goodwill Silver has been able to build since he stepped in for Stern is pretty much going to be gone after this.

China is bluffing. 4 Billion dollars is much less valuable to china than having NBA China continue to grow. The merch licensing revenue alone makes China look insane for leaving the NBA on the table over some individual tweet. They are weirdos. The NBA will be fine. The deal will be fine.

Watching Adam Silver turn green at the podium trying to explain everything like a man talking his way through a nuclear minefield clearly makes the deal look fine.

Everyones knows the NCAA and NFL are pieces of shit who only care about money. They are superior to nothing.

But neither is the NBA. They act like they are but this has revealed the truth. LeBron and the rest of them shut up real quick when they had something to lose personally. They are no different than everyone else. Money over people.

NBA players living in America unsurprisingly will know more about domestic issues and talk about that because it has impacts on their lives and the lives of people who are close to them.

Them not making the same statements about an international thing is not them being "fake".

And yes I'm not going to be naive and say that it has nothing to do with money. But to say that the reason they're staying quiet is exclusively because of money is also being baseless. At the MOMENT, there's nothing the NBA has done publically that is them acquiescing to the pressure being applied. We will have to wait and see.

They may not be making active statements in regards to international issues, but they'll certainly be put on the spot to answer questions about them now and have their wokeness tested.

James Harden already has and basically gave China and their cash flow a giant bro hug. I'm not even sure what he apologized for in particular, but he did tell everyone that China shows him 'the mo$t important love'.

Can't wait to hear how Nike's favorite captain LeBron thinks the people of Hong Kong are doing.

    And then today he said

    https://global.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/27804942

I don't know why you guys are so excited to see them fail. Is it because you disagree with their initial stance on domestic things or what? Give me a good explanation. Is it that because they didn't stay in their lane of playing sports before that they either go all in or shouldn't go in at all?

Just judging by the brits in this forum, quite a bit.

And it'd be really interesting if they were also speaking out about civil rights in their own country while being in bed with a repressive institution here.

OK now you can say something about LeBron. Not even a no comment, he went full on against Morey.

What a shame. Trying to save Space Jam 2's China market I guess.

    Saw someone comment "Qing James"

Hope Zion is not going to be an Injury prone player. Out for up to eight weeks.

He's giving off bad D. Rose vibes. Body might not be able to withstand the burst the player is capable of producing with the given frame.

Clippers started really well as expected. I’m just made up no more GSW dominating.

Oh RJ Barrett for Knicks looked good on his debut.

Could dominate for few years them and not actually the Lakers. Their bench looks really good, got good coach too and first 5 all excellent.

    nice fight last night.

Curry broke his hand though, which sucks. I haven't looked at any follow up reports this morning but I'm assuming he'll miss 2 months ish and the Warriors could really stink during that time. Imagine if they win the lottery this year lol.

They're looking at all options right now with Curry's hand. Honestly, it's for the best that this happened. They weren't going to push Thompson to come back quickly and they likely weren't making a super deep run so might as well preserve the health fully now to regroup next season.

    5 AND 0 LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOO.

this portland game prolapsed my asshole from anxious clenching, fuckin hell. one of our biggest weaknesses last season was closing out games. we'd either give up leads or fall behind and not scrape back. was very refreshing to see us claw back from 21 points down and keep fighting until the literal last minute of the game to get our first lead of the game. and all this without embiid on the court. between big ben throwing an stf on KAT and fuckin FURKAN KORKMAZ drilling a snap inbound game winning three, this week has been nuts. god damn i love this team.

The team is so gritty and really good defensively. I love the additions of Richardson and Horford. Horford is always in the right place doing the right thing. They look like they actually hit on a rookie that can contribute this year as well.

So how do we feel about Kawhi's load management inactives in this early part of the season?

I get where he's coming from, it's a crazy long season when also considering of the playoffs, and particularly so if you're coming off a deep playoff run the previous year, and last season's success in Toronto gives the argument legit weight, but man. If I'm a fan shelling out big money for tickets to one of those games or a tv partner of the league who's shelled out enormous money to schedule them in marquee matchups, man I'm pretty pissed.

At the risk of going full on get off my lawn, I just can't ignore the legends before him (or even now) who have dragged their arses out there 77 or so times a season and competed like hell whether it was a prime time game against a rival or a wednesday on the second of a back to back against the washington generals.

Would the argument hold less weight if the season were extended a bit to allow more time off and less back to backs?

There's no way they would cut games but that's ultimately the thing that would make significant headway. Less games would be less wear and tear and make the games actually matter more. Ownership and players won't be about that, though. From a broadcast standpoint, I can see networks being upset but you want live sports and put that a premium so you have to take the good with the bad.

Back-to-back games are brutal. You play until 11 or midnight, you don't get to the airport until around 2 or 3, best-case scenario, and then you're maybe hitting the hotel around 5 am. These are beyond first-world problems but they're still problems.

I have no problem with Kawhi's load management.

If a team is investing in Kawhi and paying him top dollar, and their okay with him sitting out some games, then I don't have a problem with it.

I have no idea why I am supposed to care about regular season NBA if the players don't. They are basically admitting that the only games they care about are the playoffs. I will start watching then.

You know who doesn't want to hear about how brutal back-to-back games are?

Fans who go to work back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back every single week 50 times per year. We also don't have training staffs, professional dietitians and first class travel and accommodations. Prima donna babies…

I think it's an issue for both sides: the consumer and the players. As I mentioned, most people don't care about basketball until Christmas. They'll probably duck out again for a bit and then come back around for the trade deadline and then finish the season and then the playoffs. The season is just too long.

I mean, baseball has the same issues. Sure, everyone tunes into Opening Day, but after that it's a ghost town for a few months. Once the trade deadline hits, people start discussing and watching again, but anything between April 5 - August 1 is basically pointless from a fan perspective. And honestly, it's pointless from a playoff contender viewpoint as well. The Nationals were 57-51 at the end of July and just starting to get hot. Basketball is no different, especially when more teams make the playoffs the not.

There's no way I'm paying money in advance of a Clippers game coming to town knowing there's a 1/4 chance that Kawhi won't play.

And I'm just as likely to not tune into that game on tv. Box score game.

There's got to be a tipping point (and we may not be anywhere near it but it has to be somewhere) where that matters to the networks, owners, and the league.

Big difference is baseball is definitely a regional sport now and caters to an older audience.

You have to add extra steps now before buying, haha. Are they on a back-to-back, how many games are they playing around that in a 5-7 day period, is it nationally televised?

I figure we are nowhere near close to a tipping point for networks. It's even farther away for owners because it's a player's league now and they have to do whatever they can to not tick off their star or they're gone.

If the networks were smart, we would be. They are paying way too much for a sport that less than 1M people watch. The leagues are going to end up like newspapers once the advertisers figure out they are not getting much return on their investment.

According to my man Woj, looks like we're putting the ground work in to sack Fizdale.

Fizdale is absolutely not the problem. Dolan sucks, and his management staff is terrible.

Considering the actual action(s) and results, this thing with the Rockets protesting the finish of the game is definitely one of the stupidest thing I've seen a franchise do in a while.

aye that new proposed nba schedule format sounds pretty sick to me. That league needs a change up badly when it comes to the schedule and playoffs IMO.

    https://www.boston.com/sports/nba/20...season-changes

    A breakdown of the changes:

    IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT

The proposal calls for teams to play eight divisional games in the group stage of the event, which would begin Nov. 24, 2021 and continue through Dec. 11. (The NBA said the dates are tentative.) The group stage games — four home, four away — would count toward a team’s regular-season total.

The six division winners and two wild cards would qualify for the quarterfinals on Dec. 13 and 14, 2021. Semifinals would be played as a doubleheader on Dec. 16 and the title game would be played two days later — with the semis and finals at a neutral site like Las Vegas. Players on the winning team would split $15 million; the winning coaching staff would split $1.5 million.

The NBA said that there is the potential for “additional prizing for players on the remaining final four teams” and that other incentives for teams and fans were “to be determined.”

    PLAY-IN TOURNAMENT

The regular season would end on a Saturday, one week before the start of the playoffs — as opposed to ending on Wednesday, as has been the case for years.

The top six teams in each conference would be in the playoffs.

The teams in seventh through 10th place in the regular-season standings would play off as follows: The seventh- and eighth-place teams would play with the winner clinching the No. 7 playoff seed. The teams holding the ninth- and 10th-place regular season spots would also play, and the winner of that game would play the loser of the 7-8 game to determine the No. 8 playoff seed.

From there, the first two rounds would be played as usual. Once the playoff field is down to four teams, those clubs would be reseeded based on regular-season record.

I don't really see how this truly incentivizes to reduce against load management or create a sense of urgency. Most of these players can make that money elsewhere if they wanted to. Culturally, no one is going to give a shit in the history books how many in-season tournaments you won. #Rangz

Dallas is good, way ahead of where they should be, and they're going to get better.

AD testing free agency again has sparked this years off season. I’m thinking East he’s looking to go.

I haven't read anything about it but I assume the Lakers can still offer him the most and he will stay there unless things go awry this season between him and Lebron.

Especially if Lakers win it all, why would you want to leave?

why do you think he wants to leave? is there news I'm unaware of?

as far as I know, him declining the extension was completely expected since he will make much more if he waits. same situation kyrie was in last year when he said verbally he was going to re-sign with the celtics after the season, but we all knew he would wait for the financial reasons. now obviously things with kyrie went sour so you never know and it could happen to you too but it remains the case that AD would decline this extension at this time no matter what.

I mean he's a guy who could blow out his achilles and still get a max deal, like KD, so there's no point in signing now for less.

Yeah lots of reports he’s turned down Lakers max offer to test the FA.

well its good he's not verbally committing to anything like kyrie did. and he should field offers.... that's the modern NBA, the one Lebron spearheaded. go wherever best suits you. especially since he'll only have 1 year in LA, it's not like he should have loyalty to them.

but LA will be able to offer him the most money so they will have the leg up. not sure if Brooklyn could afford to add him to KD and Kyrie?

It's the max offer for an extension under his qualifiers (four years and $146 million). He's not taking that because he could get the max contract of five years and $202 million this summer from them. It's basically a move most players of his calibre would make. Keeps the options open for the summer in terms of leaving, but it's highly unlikely he actually leaves. The Lakers would need to implode for him to consider leaving.

i don't see how that would be possible with Dinwiddie, Harris, Allen, on the roster. Unless they are all FA after the year

They're not (well, Harris is), but they're also assets that could be used to create a trade for essentially anything (depending on the need). If a star wants to move, the team who has the disgruntled star is essentially at the mercy of the new team in terms of assets.

Circling back on my response from last night: that's all true what I said, but Davis easily could pull the trigger on what seems to be sort of the new contractual trend: the one and one (player option year). I keep forgetting that guys are going to get the money one way or another but they want to maintain the flexibility of jumping ship at the first opportunity that they can.

Two things work against Davis in the theory of the one and one: his tenure in the NBA and his injury history. He'll need to get 10 years of service before his level of a max contract can increase again. That should also coincide with the end of LeBron's deal. The risk of not just taking the money now is that he is prone to suffering injuries at a higher rate, like now.

Yeah makes sense. Like I said I doubt he’ll leave Lakers, they’ll make the western finals/NBA finals.

The only player I've aeen since MJ with a similar drive to win and hunger to be the absolute best.

The man had five rings and wouldve torn off a finger for a 6th.

One of the best to play, and a great man off the court as well.

    Terribly sad news.

    RIP

Well outside of the cheating on his wife thing let’s not completely make him out to be a complete saint. But outside of that instance he really did seem to be a great guy off the court and on the court he will no doubt go down as one of the best. His drive and shot. Shit I still say Kobe in my head when I shoot something in the garbage.

And if the latest update is true his daughter was on the helicopter too. Shit.

Yeah, the cheating thing isn't great, but he's done a lot of good since retiring.
