    Top 10 Action Films

Ok, so we cant do polls or all that so lets do a list.

Action films have always been a massive genre. I can remember the excitement of a new James Bond films, or the Die Hard series, or the genuine surprise and amazement at the Matrix.

I want to know your favourites.

Send me your top 10 actions films via PM and I will put together a Rajah list. 10 points for 1st, 9 points for 2nd etc on each of your list.

I will do a little countdown and you can try and guess who will be there and we can discuss them.

    Ok go!

I think we did this before but it was years ago and the thread was pruned, and I don't remember what won.

Okay, it's a tough one because I'm trying to avoid superhero films, Bond films, films that I define more as Sci Fi or films that I think are more adventure, but I'll try to send it over now and get more involved in the discussion than the list.

I did the same sort of thing as Mik, plus I set a rule of at least 1 person must use a machine gun or some sort of Kung Fu as my "is it an action movie" test.

I dont have much to offer with this, I have never seen a Bond film, never seen a Die Hard film and have probably watched about 3 action films in my life. It's really not my genre.

That's a good shout. Some films almost feel like they should been in crime, thriller or sci fi rather than action.

The best action film of all time is a sci-fi film. There's inevitably going to be cross-over.

In fact, I think my top 5 could be (generously) classed as action sci-fi.

I think I'd struggle making a list just because I think I'd have a hard time deciding what is an Action film. I also am interested to know why Mik is excluding the things he listed because that could help me define an action film better.

Like on my gut instinct many films that come to my mind as action would probably be sci-fi action.

I guess for the most part I’ve tried to go for things where the predominant genre is the action involved. I’ve avoided spy and espionage films MOSTLY. Although when it comes down to it I’ll probably argue for a few Bond and Bourne films. I’ve avoided superhero films completely because I think that they are their own specific genre and worthy of a thread of their own. I’ve only gone for sci film films where the focus is on the action elements (as sci-fi as a genre is massively multifaceted), although even in typing that now I realised that I’ve missed off Dredd, which is a sci fi film and a comic book film (could be another competition), but I think is predominantly driven by its action. I’ve also missed off any action-adventure films where it’s mostly the adventure that drives the plot.

Its tough to say. Action is such a commonly hybridised genre that I won’t argue against anything being included other than superhero films I think.

I think my list I'll just exclude comic book/superhero movies as I think Mik made a good argument for them its own genre. Will get a list into you soon.

Arguably they are, they just aren’t. It’s not a box ticking exercise to determine genre sometimes, it’s not, “super powers”, check, good v evil, check, costumes, check.
They just don’t feel like super hero movies.

The Matrix is a beat by beat superhero origin film.

I mean, it's on my list, and I wouldn't include it in a superhero movie list (which is odd when you think about it), but it's essentially Superman.

Yeah it has all the super hero gubbins, but it just isn’t a super hero film.

I look at ACTION as a main genre. Like ROCK music. If you asked me to name the top 10 rock songs of the 90's I would have Metallica's "Enter Sandman" on that list. Now Metallica is HEAVY METAL, which is a sub genre of rock and roll, but Heavy Metal is still ROCK MUSIC.

So my list for example has movies like Capt America Civil War. Yes, it's a super hero movie, but super hero movies are action movies. You go to any video store and they don't have action movies broken down into sub categories. You're going to find TAKEN and THOR on the same shelf. I put ALIENS on the list. A sci-fi ACTION movie.

That helped me in narrowing down a top 10 list. Now keep in mind, that list will no doubt change if you asked me on the spot but the core movies will be there.

Of all the rock songs that Metallica put out in the 90s, Enter Sadman is your top choice? Interesting. I would have gone with Fuel, the Memory Remains, or Nothing Else Matters myself.

There have been some very interesting entries, some of them are arguable if they are action films.

I will publish the full list after the top 10 are revealed. 20 votes so far.

It's easily their most popular song no matter the decade. Plus, I used that song as a way to showcase that while it's still a heavy metal song, it all falls under the category of "rock" music.

You can change it if you like.

From checking my spreadsheet, have 90 different films voted on so far.

There are 3 films that are at top, miles ahead of the others.

I think action is meant to be a pretty open genre.

The rock music comparison is a good one because there are many sub genres within it, same as Action.

Just because something is a superhero movie doesn't mean it isn't an action movie.

There are 3 films that are at top, miles ahead of the others.
I’d guess those were Terminator 2, Die Hard and the Matrix.

It'd be more challenging to guess which "action" films are at the bottom of the list

    @RomfordPele

At what one point can we share our personal top 10? After you reveal all 10?

If anyone is struggling and needs some ideas, either google "Top 50 Action Movies" or hit me up and I'll send you my top 10.

I googled top 50 to see what would still be considered ACTION even if it was minimal. To my surprise quite a few movies I had already in my top 10 that I wasn't sure about were in the top 20 of all time.

I didn't put Die Hard because it is a Christmas movie and not an action movie.

Ha, I've seen the first one. Seen bits and pieces of the second one at a friend's once. Looked very good. It's top of my list to watch, along with Godfather Part II.

I don't even own it or have access to it.

I only saw Jurassic Park about a year ago.

I'm sure there are a lot of films that I have not seen that most have, like Avatar and the Godfather films.

Two of the best films ever, and probably best two sequels ever.

I haven't seen John Wick or any of the Rambo films

    Probably should rectify that sharpish.

I don't think it warrants a thread, but then I'm thinking said list is probably quite lengthy, sadly. That said, it was a lot longer 2-3 years ago. I have worked on this. Slowly.

I sense a theme here. I've seen Rambo, but none of those sequels either.

I have seen all 8 Potter films though and 21 of the 23 MCU films. Most of those over the last 2 months.

Yeah, if it wasn't for my wife, I probably would have seen the first one and that's it.

I actually enjoyed them though and liked how they gradually got darker and darker.

All the Rocky’s. Mrs Murphy had seen none of them, so I watched all 6 again this year. She liked them a lot, which was good.

Christmas Story no and fairly sure no to Pulp Fiction too.

Sorry still trying to format the above.

Some thoughts on the film from me...this was number 5 on my list. Fucking love this film. It is the best of the trilogy and they seemed to ramp up the action from the get go.

So many fantastic action sequences, the Waterloo scene, Morocco and the car chase at the end are so so intense.

I think they should have left things at the end of this film. It all was nicely tied off.

    Thoughts?

Is this the one where Bourne says "you're not in your office or we'd be having this conversation face to face?" Great scene, if it was.

Don't really remember the Bourne films unfortunately, I know I've seen the first three, but only in theaters.

The Bourne trilogy as a whole would have gotten a vote from me but I couldn’t think of an individual movie that I wanted to put in there. It is one of those definitive action series that along with another action series I left off for not being able to choose one to make my list.

I put this in the Mission Impossible category for me. It does extremely well at the box office, tons of people admire it, but for some reason it's one of those franchises where if it's on I MIGHT watch it. And if I do, I usually think, damn, no wonder people like it.

If I were looking at a top 10 action film countdown anddidn't see a Bourne movie, I'd be shocked. Especially over the last 15 years or so.

I think that the Bourne films changed the action genre for a while. The reason why the Daniel Craig Bond films exist the way that they do, the more stripped back, back to basics, gritty, more realistic formula is because of the Bourne films. They definitely popularised a hand held camera technique from the second film onwards in action films, like it or loathe it, they reinvigorated the espionage formula. It's a great trilogy, well written, well filmed, interesting, has got a great political edge, Matt Damon is awesome. Love them.

    Yep it's that one.

I'm so glad Matt Damon never cashed in on his good looks and did a bunch of romantic comedies with Kirsten Dunst or Jennifer Anniston. His filmography is pretty spectacular.

I totally agree. It is a rare series that actually gets better with each film (I am not including the two subsequent films).

The Bond films to this day were definitely impacted by them, the Pierce Brosnan films are light years different from Craig.

For that reason alone, it has to be considered one of the most important action films ever.

FYI - Bourne Identity got 10 points and Bourne Supremacy for 3 points. If you added those to the Ultimatum then it would be number 6 on this list.

His and Ben Afflecks career took a sharp separation after Good Will Hunting.

Ya, one has done wonderfully as an actor and the other has become and academy award winning director..
