Superb game from Andy Murray. I could barely watch at times, he did amazing work to get back when his serve was broken. Finally a British Wimbledon Champion WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO!

I remember them talking about their not having been a homegrown Wimbledon champion for so long, for as long as I can remember. But I can never recall whether when doing that they used to say 'English winner' or 'British winner'. I don't know whether 'British winner' only came along when Murray did, but my gut tells me not, that it was always British.

Amazing performance from Andy, against the best player in the world, in that heat, with that weight of history on his shoulders - what a legend.

Murray's in trouble - 2 sets down to Wawrinka now and being really affected by it. Even if he survives, it's hard to see him getting past Djokovic in his current form, let alone Nadal who is looking unstoppable at the moment.

he's not long off a table under anaesthetic with his back literally opened up. I'd say in Fed he came up against his first real test since having major surgery. That he managed to take one set was quite impressive, I think.

Yeah hardly shit the bed, even if completely healthy there's no shame going out in the quarters to an in form Federer, let alone coming off back surgery with not much tennis under his belt since.

It could have been the heat but the way he lost so much pace from his serve after the second set suggests that his back isn't quite right.

Fed was class, really really good but he won't get as much success at the net against Nadal.

I'm really happy for Wawrinka - hope he goes all the way, but even getting to the final is a big achievement for him. I want to see guys like him and Tsonga win a slam and shake things up a bit.

As for Murray, I think he did well to get to the quarters after being out of action so close to the tournament. He seems to have a pretty good attitude about the loss, so it'll probably stand him in good stead. He took a set off a rejuvenated Federer, after being two sets down, in his first big match-up since returning. Not too shabby.

So pleased for him. There'll always be the injury issue hanging over it, but Wawrinka was in great form before Nadal started to lose steam and he did well not to completely bottle it when Nadal made his comeback. Hope this is a sign of him joining the ranks of the big guns rather than a one-off win like Del Potro.

Much discussion going on in here about Nadal's rumoured PED activities?

Can't believe I'd never heard about this until someone mentioned it to me recently. Read a couple of blogs outlining the "evidence" yesterday. Hmm.

shame that it took a canadian to destroy the australian patriotism that was going on here the last few days... and then all it took was a beat down from Fed to destroy all of Canada's pride.

Fed aren't you like 40 now and you're still amazing.

I guess, but if there had been a thread in the Asylum it would have got hits. I don't think the non-yanks check out this forum much, I certainly don't. I bumped the cricket thread yesterday and it hadn't been posted in for months.

Oooof. Djokovic and Federer dumped out on the same night. The big guns are gone. Nice way to bookend the year, after Wawrinka won the Austrailian Open. I reckon Nishikori will do it.

I know this thread is dead nowadays, but Federer and Djokovic are having a cracking final at Indian Wells right now. It'll be a huge shame if Federer doesn't win another Grand Slam this year - his form is soaring at the moment. He surely has another Wimbledon in him at least.

Verdasco is really such a cool, cool tennis player. He's just buggered Wawrinka on grass there at Queens through attritional baseline forehand rallies. He's one of my favourite players to have never won a major and my favourite Spanish player. Really happy for him today, really nice guy too.

It's hard to look past Federer on this surface, but this is probably Murray's best chance of winning another Wimbledon if we assume that this is just a temporary set-back for Djokovic in his era of domination.

Long shot, are there any players in here? Got to pick out a new racket after finding my old, mangled Prince, purchased about 15 years ago, but there are way more options these days. I don't think Babolat even existed back then, but it seems to be the popular choice now by far. I've ruled out a Yonex purely because of the head shape, so it's between Prince, Wilson (yawn), and this French racket. I know there's far more to it than brand name, but I need a place to start. What's your weapon of choice?

I feel sorry for Murray for all the "British or Scottish" bollocks he has to go through.

I was pulling for Fed, but should be a great final nonetheless. Certainly been the most unpredictable Wimbledon in ages.

I would say that he would say differently...sponsors not being a consideration of course.

Now I don't care. I support Murray in the tennis (after roger of course) and the home nations in the football, but you obstinately did not support England in the euros so your leading question to Peter could only really have been you fixing for a hypocritical argument really.

    Serious question:

How come tennis players from the UK don't represent their individual countries but instead the whole of the UK?

They didn't always. My recollection from my youth was that Fred Perry was the last Englishman to win Wimbledon. That lasted all through Tim Henman's career. Then when he won fuck all and Murray came along and looked like he has a genuine chance of winning Wimbledon it turns to 'Fred Perry was the last British man to win Wimbledon'...like I say, doesn't really matter to me, but that's the narrative of it all.

Its different for individual sports, nobody in Scotland wants Joshua or wanted Hatton to lose because he's English. Same goes for English golfers. It's only really the football team and possibly, to a much lesser extent if at all, the rugby team that's hated up here.

Griffin probably wants Murray to lose because he said 'anyone but England' before a tournament a few years ago.

I love Murray. Socially aware, open book, dry humour. Top lad. And also the best tennis player we've ever produced. That helps a touch.

It's more than that I think. I know we laughy-jokeyed about England in the Euros (well moreso the media hyping them up so much), but he's been sniping about how Scotland didn't qualify all throughout the Euros and jumped on that Rangers-Hibs violence tarring all Scottish fans as holligans.

    He's better than this.

Banter about teams being shit is one thing, banter about branding Scottish football hooligans from one incident when shit happens in England too is hypocritical.

Their haven't exactly behaved like gentlemen in this tournament. You focused on one game on Rangers-Hibsthe English were getting in trouble pretty badly the first half of the tourney. Though I realise the Russians had a large say, the English were not entirely innocent either.

Never claimed they were. It's hardly like Hib/Rangers was the 1st incident in recent times in Scottish domestic football and I just picked up on it though is it?

Cunts will be cunts at the end of the day, but don't talk such bollocks Badger and make out i'm in the wrong and all you Scottish lads are just having a bit of #banter.

Way to miss the point completely. Of course it wasn't the first incident, but you made it a point to brand all Scottish fans violent in a domestic game not a national game. The Scottish fans in international games are generally well-behaved.

And if I recall correctly Mike said to you every club has their shit fansxafter your Rangers-Hibs comments.

Unlike in rugby and football, for example, there are no separate international governing bodies for the individual nations of the UK, it's just the LTA which is the British tennis authority as a whole.

Also just depends what Murray puts in the 'Nationality' box on his application form. I don't think there's such a thing as a Scottish passport just yet.

Pretty sure it was a British Davis cup team. Henman and the like also played for that so any notion of him representing England was only from the media they've always represented Britain as far as I'm aware.

The weird one is always the England cricket team which will pull players from Ireland and Wales... very few admittedly but I've never understood the eligibility rules there

I was actually only joking Peter, given we're pretty tight on here and always have been. You fat tit.

And Nadal is fucked because he was too fit and too strong too young. Plus probably fucked by drugs.

Anyone watching Federer and Nadal reliving their glory days? Brilliant match so far and now heading into a fifth set. I hope Roger takes it, but Nadal doesn't look like a man who went 5 hours just a few days ago.

Really good match between Murray and Del Potro so far. Even with a dodgy groin, Del Potro is making some great returns. It might be the best Murray has looked so far in the tournament despite being pushed in every game.

Managed to get on a court yesterday for the first time in a few years. Have wanted to play for ages but for some reason nobody else wants to until Wimbledon starts. It's highly irritating. And then this fucker I was playing only has a backspin. Every. Fucking. Shot. Backspin. Ended up sports-injured being sent running full speed into the net, now an ouchie 2x4 inch swollen bruise just above my elbow. So much rage, and it was only supposed to be a friendly game.

My arse also really hurts. From all the tennis. Anyone else get that? Sports injuries?

I had my first pre-season football training on Sunday and could still feel it during the second one last night. Four and a half days and I still hadn't recovered. Old.

Is this your bum you're talking about? Does your lady not rub it for you (the bum)?

My sports injury seems to be growing. Not sure if I should worry about the sports injury. As someone who doesn't play a lot of competitive sports, this sports injury is a rare novelty. It's a bit of a treat to have a sports injury so I took a photo of it. The sports injury, that is.

This is an epic match between Nadal and Muller. The tension on every point must be exhausting.

That, from Gauff, is one the most remarkable performances I've ever seen.

She's 15, set down, 5-2 down, her head was gone. To win from there, floored.
