    New Music

getting older, but always trying to stay 'hip'. love finding and discovering good music. adamy was my favorite for that but he isn't here (rip in peace). this isn't me being hip though. just pretty pumped about this:

what new releases (last month or so), have you been enjoying? what are you looking forward to? another one announced would be the new N.E.R.D. album. i didn't really feel the last few, but the first 2.5 of them were dope.

Holy shit, had no idea Glassjaw was releasing new music.

I'm stoked to hear Neil Young's new stuff. He is a national treasure imo.

If you like Belle & Sebastian, they're releasing a series of EP's. Here's a song from one of them:

The new Midnight record is badass. I can't remember if you listen to this type of stuff or not, but it's sick.

Nortt is coming out with a new record called "Endeligt" at the end of the year too. Haven't heard anything from it yet, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Recent records I've liked a lot:

"The Dusk In Us" by Converge

    "Phases" by Angel Olsen

It stopped from me from linking more than 5 videos. Noel Gallagher's new album is great ("Who Built the Moon?"), as is Liam's ("As You Were").

"Post Self" from Godflesh is awesome. I need to listen to it more though.

"Interior" by Quicksand is one I haven't heard in its entirety but I can tell I will like it a lot.

Electric Wizard came out with a new record like a month ago but I still haven't checked it out yet. I like them a lot though.

Did not know Neil had a new album coming out. Definitely got to check that out.

I knew Noel and Liam had new albums out just havent had a chance to get into them. I heard liams new single and I really didn t care for it much. I am still a massive Noel fanboy so I have got to definitely check it out.

I think Noel is 10x the songwriter Liam is. But it's just hard not to enjoy hearing Liam's voice on something in 2017. Call it nostalgia, but I love it.

Forgot about Glassjaw. Still listening to Daryl's other project, Color Film (Living Arrangements) released earlier this year.

Its 100% nostalgia cause the songs are complete crap. Regardless if he was a better songwriter there is practically no difference between the two now. As shit as each other.

i have been digging some ARCA, might actually pick something up. not usually my style, but it's pretty dope.

lcd's new shit is pretty good. still makes me want to listen to the first two albums, probably nostalgia.

bjork is releasing a lot of shit, so i missed that. i never get really deep into her stuff, but i always give it a few listens and keep it in the library.

St. Vincent album was something new to me (got it through a subscription club), but also worthy of more listens. i only knew of her previously because her album with David Byrne of the Talking Heads.

    brand new definitely good.

QOTSA: pretty fucking fun album, they definitely made a really dance-able album there. also comes out really well live, i thought. i thought of doing a review of it when i feel like starting to do reviews someday.

    kendrick goes without saying.

i dug the Arcade Fire album and i think overall it is pretty damn good, i really like the story they are trying to tell with it.

thanks @Smeagol, i did not know that and will check that shit out. i will be giving some of these @Clive Plasma and @Bandit choices a listen as well these next few days. i made the thread for discovery like this, so i really appreciate it.

thinking of ARCA made me remember this album out of left field (for me), this year, that i enjoy and can't really explain as to why i feel that way.

    Pharmakon - Contact

i guess if i had to describe the album: it's just fucking noise. mostly rough noise.

    i like it, though.

reading/hearing interviews from the artist give me the impression that she is the "if you don't understand it, you aren't on my level" vibe. i don't really understand it, but it ain't stopping me from listening here and there. this is my first real foray into straight up noise with tape loops, indecipherable "lyrics" and the such. only seen a few videos of her 'performances'. usually art pieces, moreso than a concert. Stones Throw records always has some ridiculous shit, and this fits right up there.

I recently discovered the Silver Snakes *Saboteur* album. Listening to that a lot as well as the Color Film one mentioned previously.

Not new: Jay Reatard *Watch Me Fall*
Hooked on this album of late as well.

Semi-new, some old. Really like Pete Murray, you seem like you listen to a lot of different stuff... There's 3 albums for Lo-Pro, it took me awhile to really get into the last one but it's turned out to be my favorite of theirs. From there Murray started Life on Planet 9, they have two albums out, *Theory of Everything* from 2014 which I only just discovered this year, which is the better of their two... and *Higher* which was released this year. I haven't quite gotten into that one as much but still like it.

Last for now.... Death Valley High *CVLT AS FVK*
If you're not familiar with them they're what would happen if Orgy and Mindless Self Indulgence were one group.

I was reading 'top x albums of the year' articles and found an artist called Mount Eerie. His new album is so heartbreaking, about his wife dying.

Cold war kids - La Divine
    U2 - Songs of experience
    Beck - Colors
The Rural Alberta Advantage - The wild
    Hollow Coves - Wanderlust EP

And Snow Coats have a few singles, but no EP or LP yet. Sounds promising for a new act.

Been a pretty weak year by recent standards imo. Still a good deal of enjoyable stuff though.

Here's some albums I've liked excluding electronic records as I'd imagine no one here would give a shit about those:

Tyler - Scum Fuck Flower Boy
    Kendrick - DAMN
Big KRIT - 4eva is a Mighty Long Time
Freddie Gibbs - You Only Live 2wice
    Future - HNDRXX
Young Thug - Young Thugger Girls
    Slowdive - Slowdive
    Protomartyr - Relatives in Dissent
Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
    Fleet Foxes - Crack Up
At The Drive In - Interalia
    Miguel - War & Leisure
    Kelela - Take Me Apart
Kelly Lee Owens - Kelly Lee Owens
    Forest Swords - Compassion
    Arca - Arca
    Björk - Utopia
Converge - The Dusk In Us
The Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia

Mt Eerie dominated my listening back in January, Fleet Foxes and Tyler in the Summer. Been loving the new Miguel this week. Probably in part because it's so summery and it's so chilly and dark in London at the moment.

it's hard for me to find new music i like these days. i'm just not inclined to actively follow new releases, and i guess i'm more particular than i used to be. i just find it rare that a song strikes me and i really like it. i will work through ringo's list.

    Yeah, I give a shit.

Completely forgot about that Slowdive album. Cracking record.

I'd say a lot of my year, outside of the heavier stuff, has been dominated by incredible afrobeat/grime records. The J Hus album was brilliant, and then there's been a wealth of great singles released.

Wanderwelle - Lost In A See Of Trees (my go to late night listening at the moment)
Legowelt - Legendary Freaks In The Trash Of Time (spacey techno from a master)
Gas - Narkopop (legendary ambient producer's first new album as Gas in 17 years)
Porter Ricks - Anguilla Electrica (legendary techno producers' first new album in about 20 years)
Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - Ambient Black Magic

    more aggressive on the ear:
    JASSS - Weightless
    Tzusing - 東方不敗
    Pessimist - Pessimist

    More out there stuff:
Yves Tumor - Experiencing The Deposit Of Faith (uses lots of samples from well known artists and makes them almost unrecognisable)
    Jlin - Black Origami
Iglooghost - Neo Wax Bloom (MikeHunt you might like this as I know you enjoy Rustie. Or hate it. I can see it being very divisive.)

    Also some comps I enjoyed:

Welcome to Paradise, vol. 1: Italian Dream House 89-93
Outro Tempo: Electronic & Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1978-1992
Pop Makossa: The Invasive Dance Beat of Cameroon, 1976-1984
Miracle Steps: Music From The Fourth World

And I forgot the Moses Sumney album Aromanticism which includes "Quarrel". Such a good song.

I saw him play at a church in London a few weeks ago. He's the sweetest guy in the world and it was so sad. He commented on how touring and playing these songs is making the emotions he feels when singing them a little less raw and how that's scary for him. Then during one of the last songs a bible reading started playing through the church's speakers and it was all very weird. Then he joked that people shouldn't listen to it while the sound guy scrambled around trying to switch it off. Then he finished his last song, said something along the lines of "thanks for listening to me do this" and went and sat down at the merch stand at the back of the church to sell some more t-shirts and vinyl, which he designs himself. It was all a bit surreal.

Pile - A Hairshirt of Purpose
The Tidal Sleep - Be Water
    Gnarwolves - Outsiders
Employed to Serve - The Warmth of a Dying Sun
Listening to Elder for the first time. About 2 minutes into the album and am already loving it. This is right up my alley. Thank you.

Seems Los Campesinos! are still in form after a few years without a release.

pitchfork.com released their top 100 songs of the year list today. those lists used to pretty reliably give me a number of songs every year that i'd like a lot but the last several years they've been over the top awful, as is also the case this time.

are there any good music criticism sites? ringo?

Lists I'll actually be looking out for this year are The Quietus (probably the most interesting albums list), The Wire, Fact and Juno. Juno used to have great editorial on Juno Plus but that ceased to exist unfortunately. RA for electronic although their lists have been a bit naff lately. Gorilla vs. Bear still do good indie lists apparently too.

Been listening to The Midnight a bit too much lately. One of those sounds that pops up that you didn't know you wanted. 80s throwback synth-wave duo. Their latest single Lost Boy dropped a few weeks back.

Alice in Chains have a new album in a couple of weeks, and the Prodigy have a new album in November.

List a few bands you like and I'll see if any match up? A lot of these are quite heavy, but there's a variety in there for sure. Or just give them all a go...?

Screaming Females new album is unreal.

Also @Donald strong rumours of a new Aphex album very soon.

I've never heard any of their music but this seems a logical place to mention it after seeing Clive's band list - I saw a poster the other day for a punk band called Upturned Spastic Bus.

Aye, read something about his logo popping up in a couple of Underground stations.

People who were into the softer stuff in this thread: check out that tony molina record. His first record was like fuzzy/stonery weezer type rock. Then his second was a little softer, and his 3rd has gone further in that direction and is my favorite yet. My only criticism is that a lot of the songs feel too short to me, like incomplete almost.

I quite liked it, but it's a bit nu-metal in places for me. Love the scatty drum loops though, haven't heard that shit in a while.

    Blood Orange, WOW!

Dev Haynes regardless of what name he is putting out music under is always great but the Blood Orange project and the new album are seriously fucking mindblowing. I've listened to it 3 times today already and have no intention of stopping soon.

Just put this on based on your recommendation and really enjoyed Orlando.

Check out his other acts Lightspeed Champion (acoustic folk) and test icicles (post hardcore/dance/indie). Just to see how talented this guy really is.

Sad to hear about the singer, Sam Mehran, passing away last month.
