    I'm Dying Up Here

    Anybody watch this?

I was intrigued enough by the trailer to break my rule about not watching the first season of a show until it was renewed. I liked the first episode. Definitely had some laughs in it. And I'm a Clark Duke fan so I was happy to see him in it.

Jim Carrey was on Kimmel promoting this since he's a producer. Carrey's lost his fucking mind. This has been apparent for a while, but it's still disconcerting.

Anyone else follow this so far?

I've enjoyed the shit out of it. The characters, the development, the tone, the gags, etc. It ain't all perfect, but as a standup fan this is pretty wheelhouse fun, idk.

    You should watch The Leftovers.

Tried the first ep and just remember it rather ridiculous. Not sure how the two should be connected anyway.

I'm not saying they're related, I'm just suggesting The Leftovers. It's a pretty amazing show.

Yeah I'm really liking it so far. The only character I don't like is the ginger beard comic, whatever his name is. Bill? Other than him I think it's been great. Compelling characters. And Melissa Leo is fantastic.

I think Bill's character is great. He's knocking out of the park the jaded/cynical martyr-minded comic. The fact that his peers both respect and readily dismiss the guy is perfect.

And completely agree, Leo is outstanding.

When you put it like that, I can kind of see the appeal of Bill. To me, though, he comes off as that self-righteous, "I should be bigger than I am" entitled douchebag. Like he's waiting for the rest of the world to understand his brilliance.

Sure he comes off that way. He believes he's doing a more meaningful brand of comedy than everyone else because he's a narcissistic shithead who also romanticizes a certain tragic self-loathing in stand-up. But that approach has likely also been the reason he's gotten where her has and so he feels completely justified. He's not just waiting for the rest of the world to see his brilliance, he's furious that they don't already.

That's a better way of putting it. Like I said, I understand the appeal of the character, I just don't like the character. Maybe I know too many narcissistic shitheads.

Last week's episode in which the blond did the TWA private event reminded me of being in Vegas a couple years ago. My wife and I saw a burlesque show and the intermission had a comedienne come out and tell jokes. Of course some jackass screams out "show us your tits!" She didn't skip a beat, so this was probably a canned response, but she fires back "how about I show you my dick and make you really jealous? I'll come down there and put it on your lips like your uncle used to." Place went crazy.

Melissa Leo's speech in front of the entire group in Sunday's episode was amazing. Best scene of the entire run so far.

That woman is convincing as fuck. If she told me I had tiny purple leprechauns crawling out of my butt I'd twist around to take a look.

She's been Emmy worthy the entire show. If she wins, it'll be that scene that did it.

Great finale from this past week. I'm hoping it gets renewed.

Was legit happy watching everyone celebrating with Bill.

Even though I'm pretty doubtful, I'm 100% with you on hoping this gets another run.

We cancelled the movie channels to save money once the baby came! I know we'll end up adding Showtime back at the end of the summer when the next season of Shameless starts so we'll binge this then.

Is it good so far?! As good as last year?

Yes. Critics still hate it and I still love it for it's awkward niche-ness. The characters are a mixed bag of caring and loathing, the storylines are pretty convenient but believable, and most importantly I actually give a shit what happens to these bunch of weirdos.

And fuck man, you have the internet, make it make things happen for you.
