    Match/Promo/Show Recommendation Thread

Just a thread to recommend stuff to people. A couple random things I saw recently that I really liked:

Bret Hart and Owen Hart vs. The Steiner Brothers-from before Royal Rumble 1994 when Bret and Owen were teaming up. 30 minutes of awesomeness, I think this was only released on a Coliseum Video.

Hilariously insane promo with Hulk Hogan and The Crusher. Hogan eats a cigar.

Flair vs. Windham from Battle of the Belts. I think this is the one that Meltzer gave five stars but these guys had a number of excellent matches.

Random obscure pay-per-views that I really like:

-WWF One Night Only 1997 (Shawn vs. Bulldog, Taker vs. Bret, Vader vs. Owen, Dude Love vs. Triple H)

-WCW Spring Stampede 1994 (Flair vs. Steamboat, Vader vs. Big Boss Man, The Nasty Boys vs. Cactus Jack and Maxx Payne)

-Spring Stampede 1999 (Last good WCW show, really)

This was an interesting concept, but felt a little obvious about babyface/heel. Would've been more interesting if they did a combination of this and what they did in '95 with the wild card match. But yeah, it could've been executed much better. It was cool to see Santana included in this, but definitely rushed. In all their years in the same company I think this is the one and only Hogan/Santana team, or the only one on any kind of stage.

This was my first ppv VHS when I was really young. I always loved the concept of the final match with all of the survivors in it. Granted the match disappoints but it is well worth bringing back one day. Also I liked the idea behind the free for all match at RR '96 where the winner enters number 30 and the loser enters at number 1. Sadly duke droese won meaning you knew the number 30 entrant had no chance.

Not really an obscure one but I've always loved the 98 Survivor Series. Mainly because of how it had an overall story unfolding throughout the PPV (and also, who doesnt like tournaments?), which I think is something that's overlooked when people compare today to the Attitude era.
Today it feels like everyone's feud and storyline takes place in their own little world where there's zero interaction outside of it with anyone else. Then add in the fact that we have things like how the Cruiserweight division needs to have its own colours, ring ropes, etc, as if its a separate show, or how the women today are in their own world.
Back then it felt more like everyone was a part of one big storyline with lots of little side stories taking place. It wasn't out of the ordinary to see the men interact with the women, see a main eventer have proper matches (as in not a squash) against a mid carder, or main eventers going up against an established tag team duo. The cards back then were like albums, while today they feel like compilations. And I liked how with Survivor Series 98, it was basically the main storyline of Austin vs Vince being told throughout the whole PPV, and across multiple matches.

I'd really wish the writers were able to go back to that style. It makes watching the whole show more worthwhile, where as today if I just skip the matches I'm not interested in, it doesn't change the experience for me one bit. Which is some ways is obviously a good thing because nowadays I can fast forward through shows when I'm catching up on things, which of course saves time. But if I'm looking to be entertained for 3 straight solid hours, it just won't happen any more.

You need to remove the 2017 glasses and put on these from the 1980s to appreciate it, any color variant will do:

I enjoy a good Macho Man promo as much as anyone but that one just seemed like Sherri fucked it up and Macho did his best to salvage it. Randy Salvage.

Random show: WCW Beach Blast '92. Not the best show overall, but the 3 top matches all deliver: Cactus Jack vs. Sting in a Falls Count Anywhere match (one of Foley's few big matches in WCW), Rick Rude vs. Ricky Steamboat in a 30 minute Iron Man match and a good main event pitting The Steiner Brothers against Dr. Death and Terry Gordy. For me, this show is one of the highlights of the Bill Watts era of WCW, which remains underrated IMO.

Gotcha. I thought you felt it was awkward because Savage was acting fairly "abusive" towards Sherri, people are very sensitive about shit like that these days.

There are a lot of gems on early 90s WCW shows. A lot of the shows overall aren't good but they almost all have at least one awesome match on them.

Recommend Terry Gordy and Steve Williams against The Steiner Brothers from that era. Four big dudes just beating the fuck out of each other.

Speaking of.. I remember digging Vader vs. Maxx Payne on WCW Worldwide, must have been spring/summer of 1994. Pretty short but intense big man match.

    This isn't the full match..

And everyone needs to see Vader vs. Dustin Rhodes from Clash of the Champions, also from 1994. Don't think it's on Youtube. One of my favorite WCW matches.

Hard hitting match where the winner goes into Thundercage at the Clash. Cactus of course is a bump master while Orndorff is a stud with intensity. The angle at the end was well done. It had the aura of a fight and was violent without appearing choreographed which is a trap hardcore matches fall into. Everyone played their roles perfectly, and the turn was effective. Good match. Cactus hitting everyone with the shovel was great. Turning Cactus babyface is a bold booking move that paid off for his career - props to Rhodes or whoever's idea this was.

I will continue to champion this match until the day I die. It's just a perfect TV main event - balls to the wall action from start to finish. The crowd are super-pumped to see Austin and Triple H get their asses kicked and J.R. is electrifying on commentary.

Back when the crowd was actually excited for a Divas match. I miss these days. Also drama outside the ring too. The Attitude era was simply the best. This happened 17 years ago and is still better than what's going on now. They used the Divas better back then.
